We stopped by here tonight for a quick drink. They have quite the extensive list of tap ciders, seltzer, and beer. That woman working there was very friendly and the place was extremely inviting. I would definitely stop back by here. They also have coolers on the side if you would like to purchase individual cans, in addition to growlers. The only two negatives are. 1. They don't have food, so you do need to bring your own if you want to eat (aside from some random snacks they do have for sale). 2. Someone had a dog inside and I'm highly allergic. This was not a service dog. I'm quite confused how this is allowed. Even still, I would stop back by. Luckily, it's quite large. read more

Good and extensive selection of beers. No cooked food served but there's a small refrigerated food section and sometimes a food truck outside. Vibe is kind of sterile tbh. But it's big and can handle larger groups. Kids can only sit outside or in one small section of the place. read more

Pros: wonderful selection, cheerful, inviting service, and a convenient food truck outside. The fire pit on the patio is a great touch. Cons: Usually too cold, loud, uncomfortable seats, and lots of TVs. They close comparatively early. This is a fantastic venue, and has become (ever since the death of Copper Door) the first bar I suggest for both casual and professional meetups. It's clearly a labor of love for the bartenders, who are knowledgeable, friendly, and diligent. They're happy to offer advice, samples, and make a point to address you by name. In their downtime, they're cleaning and zipping around to collect empty glasses from the tables. All are welcome; there's usually a dog or two in the bar, and a little kid's area in a corner. Normal tables complement taller bar stools and a really cool extended bar section juts out to double the amount of available bar seating. It's always clean, so I love coming here to write or catch up with friends. I usually try to bring noise-cancelling headphones, though. It's typically loud, and the TVs can be really distracting. The temperature is also fairly brisk, and there's one seat in particular positioned directly under a vent; I've seen several customers sit there and quickly reconsider. The hours and parking also leave something to be desired. A bar closing at 10 is a little unfortunate. They don't serve food, but the Starvin' Marvin food truck in the parking lot can bring your order to your table inside. They offer piles of great crunchy fries, sandwiches, and personal pizzas. Wonderfully convenient. Finally, there's a big fire pit outside on their patio. It's a really great place to nurse a beer and stare into the flames. Despite my low tolerance for the external stimulation of the noise and TVs, I love Beer Star and hope they stick around. read more

Nice addition to Sixth Avenue in Tacoma. First time in and I noticed immediately they have a huge selection of beers on tap. An equally impressive cooler selection in the back, but half of it was empty. Of what was there, the beer selection was well thought out. They also have a surprisingly large selection of wines and ciders, a very nice outdoor area and they are dog-friendly. Although, the dog barking inside every few minutes was enough to get me to leave after one beer. Beer Star defintely carters to the family-types with kids and dogs, so don't expect the same atmosphere as RedHot or the Parkway. Although, I am sure the parents in the area are very happy about this addition, because there are no places like this in Tacoma, that I can think of. Great neighborhood place and worth checking out if you are in the area. read more

I live a short bike ride from Beer Star so keep trying it...the ambiance is great, the outdoor seating some of the best in Tacoma (asides from those on the water), the selection impressive, the food trucks consistently good...but the consistent arrogance and standoffishness of the bartenders, like they are doing you a favor taking your order and would prefer that you went somewhere else, is consistent to the point last night that's what I did...went down to Locus Cidery and directed my friends to meet me there instead. Peaks and Pints has the same issue with the standoffishness of many of their bartenders...we are in Tacoma for goodness sake, be friendly or go back to Seattle. Here is to hoping the management gets the message ~ friendly bartenders = more customers. read more

I frequently go to Beer Star for drinks, munchies, and games. Having a place that I can just relax and spend a few hours socializing is great. I mostly drink wine, which is sometimes an issue at beer dedicated establishments. Beer Star usually has 4 wines on tap, so I'm a happy girl. Then they have a billion beers on tap and bottled/canned. In addition to drinks, they have snacks inside: meat, cheese and crackers, and giant pickles. On Friday and Saturday evenings there is a food truck. Inside is a decent size with a family section, bar seating, general seating, and a few small tables by the windows. I usually sit up front with my doggos since Beer Star is dog friendly. I'm looking forward to warmer weather because there is also outdoor seating. It's under construction but looks like they're putting in a massive fire pit. See you around! read more

love the dog friendliness and how roomy it is even on a busy night. you can easily find a cozy spot with your dog and partner and not have to bump elbows with anyone. pints are kinda overpriced but it is what it is, they're not any more expensive than anywhere else i guess. hockey on tv is a nice touch. overall not a bad place to spend some time after work read more

I love this place. Being a parent of a 2 year old it's nice to know there is somewhere I can go enjoy a beer (or glass of wine in my case) while he can play and interact with other children. There is a train table and chalk board and some books to keep the kiddos busy. Plus I enjoy sitting on the benches by the kid area and interacting with the other parents. There are snacks and I have been twice with food trucks. Highly recommend for those patent that need a place to go too read more

Pretty great spot overall. Really nice indoor/outdoor setup, good food options plus you can bring your own. Very friendly staff. The tap list leaves a bit to be desired though. Some crummy Rogue beer, they've got it. Interesting imperial stouts, not so much. Basic Elysian IPA but no Cloudburst. A lot of samey IPAs (and that's not a knock on IPAs - it's a knock on mediocre indistinguishable ones) take up too much of the tap list and crowd out more interesting beers. For a lot of the real winners, you need to go to the can and bottle fridges. Which isn't bad, but a great tap list would be ideal. I like Beer Star, but it's certainly no Chuck's Hop Shop. read more

Snacks available but no kitchen. We came on a Wednesday afternoon and had the place to ourselves for the first 10 minutes. Looks like a good place but the one employee working didn't want to be bothered (or didn't have answers) to questions. My only negative was the single employee working did not appear to want to be there. Perhaps just a bad day for him. I would try it again based on everything else. *edit. I love beer taphouses. Personally I think you can never have too many of them as long as there are brewery selections that are local(ish) for breweries that are more than a day drive to reach. Thankfully Beer Star Tacoma is such a taphouse. I have had a few great Abbey beers out of California here. The selection of beers that they have on tap in general is wide and vast which is just what I like to see for a Beer Bar. I have been to this Beer Star twice now. The second time I went here it was warm enough out that Steve and I could utilize their outdoor seating which is great. It is a nice, spacious place to hang out and chill with your beer. Already Beer Star seems enormously popular. Sure, the newness is still there and that always brings in a lot of people but I think the staying power of Beer Star retaining it's popularity is very good. It's at a great location and is right off of 6th Ave. where there is a lot of activities. Not only does Beer Star have a great selection of beers on tap but they also have a pretty solid selection of bottled beers that you can buy as well. If there is any room for improvement here it's the parking. I have no complaints about the location itself but the parking lot is quite small given the amount of business Beer Star gets but the good thing is you can usually find fairly close parking in the neighborhood to use as well. read more

Not quite what I expected but it was also a Thursday night. There was like 4 or 5 people there at 630. Football was on and everything. There is alot of seating and it's a mix of high top and low top tables. It's very simple and open. The staff was friendly too. The biggest bummer is that there's only a few random snack choices but no kitchen. My personal preference is food with beer. They have a nice selection of beers and ciders (a LOT of IPAs which aren't my fav) and even wine for the wine lovers! This was pleasant but not a wow. Also, dogs allowed :). read more

We wanted to sit outside and made a beeline for an empty picnic table but it was blocked by some kids playing on the floor with a train set. As a new parent in the neighborhood, I've been waiting for this family-friendly bar to open and am very satisfied. Great drink selection: 50 taps, mostly beer, almost all WA and OR beers, which I like, including several Tacoma breweries. The PNW is sort of IPA-crazy, which isn't my thing, but there are plenty of varieties represented. Staff is friendly. The family-friendly area is smaller than the bar area, but that's to be expected. 4 stars instead of 5 because it's dog-friendly (which I don't like; sorry!) and the beers are pricy (5.50-7.00 for most pours, but maybe that's just what beers cost here now?). We finally visited Beer Star last night! And it did not disappoint. It is a beirdo's paradise. A whole world of taps including wine, kambucha, cider and all kinds of beer. They don't have food but they have a great snack options. We bought some snacks and then ordered pizza delivery. The atmosphere is perfect for a meet up with friends. They really did a great job creating a social atmosphere. The staff was also great. Very friendly. We also brought beer home from the bottle shop. read more

This is honestly one of my favorite spots in Tacoma! They have a huge (and always rotating) selection of beers on tap and in cans/bottles. They also have a pretty good wine selection (the owner is a Somm!) Not only are they family friendly but they also love dogs! They're starting to ramp up on brewer's night on a Thursday's through the summer, which means specials on pints, raffles, and (usually) a food truck!! I've been twice. First time, I loved it and couldn't wait to come back. Second time, the amount of kids was extremely daunting. There possibly was more kids than adults. I don't mind the kids and think it's great to have a place to mingle with other adults with your kids too, it was just too much running around and constant screaming without much parental supervision. I couldn't pick out something from the cooler without worrying about tripping on kids crawling on the floor. I'd recommend it to those with kids who don't mind a lot of noise as the tap selection is really great. read more

It's great to see places to eat and drink moving west down 6th Ave. Beer Star is a great new tap room with a HUGE selection of local and west coast beers. Though they don't have a kitchen (by design), they really went the extra mile to make sure you can have something to eat. They offer a variety of snacks--chips, cheeses, salamis, even sandwiches--all nicely pre-packaged, and there have been regular food trucks outside. There a couple of other really unique things about the place--they have a children's area, where you can sit and sip, with your kiddies contained in a nicely designed play area; an outdoor beer garden is clearly in the works (now we can sit outside at a taproom somewhere else besides the Parkway); they are dog-friendly (don't know how they swung this through the local regulations?); they look like they're gearing up to sell bottles and cans along the back wall; they have lots of large well placed TVs for game, too. The beer-tenders are super cool guys and I've had a great experience so far....It's the closest place to my house and I can WALK there. Not sure if that is good or bad for me? LOL. Only downside so far? The place gets really noisy! If you want a quiet place to sip and meditate, avoid weekends. PS--my dog really didn't touch that beer...she just posed with it! read more

Super spot. Very convenient for me as I often have a 15-20 minute wait for something just down the street and it's a nice place to spend that time. Beer selection is fabulous. Seems mostly local residents that patronize during the week. Food trucks on weekends from what I have seen. Maybe, just maybe, some of the other patrons come across as snooty or pretentious or even do I dare say, beertentious? Is that a real thing? I dunno. Also, prices can be a little on the steep side but that is a trend everywhere these days. Shame too because my beer budget just buys me less and less as time goes by. Can't keep up with trends I guess. Also, Beer Star, our up some sound baffles. When the kids are revved up and the place is fullish, you can barely hear what the person sitting next to you is saying. I know it's not some quiet, dark lounge but it sure can be a loud place to be. Nevertheless, 3.5 stars is my official rating. read more
