La Jolla has been one of my favorite places for a long time, and just over a year ago, I discovered one of my new favorite spots in La Jolla - Beeside Balcony. Everything comes together so incredibly well - the food, cocktails, view, vibe and service. Want a light and delicious combo? Try the Salmon Tartare + Arugula & Beet Salad, paired with an Apricot Honey House cocktail. Amazing. Make it "surf & turf" by adding an order of delicious Meatballs. And, those are only appetizers! We stopped by for brunch and I'm so glad we did! Parking was pretty hard to find on a Monday afternoon, and we ended up parking in a structure nearby. The restaurant itself is on the second floor, accessible through stairs on the side. The decor is super cute and there are plenty of tables. Service was good, our server was very kind and prompt. Food came out pretty fast since we came on a weekday for brunch and there weren't many other people. We got their Lavender's Bees Knees and the Black Lava Margarita. Both were amazing and packed a punch. We usually order 2 cocktails each wherever we go, but one was perfect here. We both loved our drinks! As for starters, we got the oysters and broccolini. Oysters were so delicious and creamy. Broccolini was also pretty good. We both got the Beeside burger as our mains. They both came out closer to well done than medium, but they were absolutely delicious. We upgraded the fries that they come with to their truffle parmesan fries. We felt like the truffle was quite subtle and they were a miss with us, but the texture of the fries was great. Seems like a cute spot with great views! read more

I was looking forward to trying out this place based on all of the hype and positive Yelp reviews, but I was disappointed. Pros: -nice ambience -great live music -excellent drinks -outstanding server Cons: -poor reservation system. Even though we made a reservation for a balcony table, we had to wait for 20 mins to be seated there. -poor food quality. I sent back an entree because it just smelled and tasted old. I have sent back food only once before in my life. The other dishes did not seem fresh or were burnt. -slow food service. Even though the food was burnt and not fresh, it took a long time get my food. There is so much restaurant competition in La Jolla, and I really hope this new restaurant can step up its game! read more

Promptly seated (restaurant not that busy/early). Nice table by balcony (asked to be indoor). Server prompt, knowledgeable, professional. Pita bread very good (lots of oil in it). Dips good, though tzatziki thin. My salmon was very good, though grain mixture/ vegetables it sat on top was boring and under-seasoned. Wine selection small but decent. I hate to say it but the worst service ever. I had family in town and they wanted to go to La Jolla we decided to have dinner and I saw BeeSide the sister location. I have regularly gone to Del Mar location and told my family we had to go to this location. While greeted and sat, we waited 20 minutes with not a single server acknowledging us. Came here on a Saturday night with a reservation for inside and they said they didn't have it available. After waiting almost 30 minutes and complaining to be seated inside (because we had an indoor reservation set) we finally got seated. The waitress was phenomenal , very kind and sweet. The white sangria was refreshing and delicious. The truffle fries may have been the best that I've had! Came to this place with 2 friends last weekend. We were initially going to Cody's but it was too busy. We decided to try this place instead. The guy with the pink hair was nice and reassured my their food was better. We sat on the balcony/patio area, which was cute and had heaters (windy day). Our server was a nice guy, but seemed at times he was rushing us out. I ordered the beet salad and it was decent. I wouldn't say amazing and I wouldn't say terrible. It is as a good size for the price, but just a little bit of a weird flavor. I also ordered the strawberry, vodka drink and that was good as well. Ok, so... overall, this was a great restaurant experience. In summary... Pros: - Food and cocktails for the most part are superbly executed. - Servers are extremely attentive. Cons: - Creativity vs price point is questionable - One of our desserts was a complete nightmare (but due to amazing service, the server quickly took it away and struck it from our tab). - The backside of the balcony doesn't have the best ambience What to say about this place? I feel like the best description is if you look at the menu, it's all going to be dishes you've seen before at other restaurants. They are not reinventing the wheel here. With that said, every dish we had seemed to be just slightly better than typical versions we've had before, including in town. For example, unimaginative dishes that were executed superbly: - Whole Branzino. This dish is done everywhere. Herringbone did a good one. Catania does a great one, etc. Beeside Balcony's version was actually somewhat more enjoyable than those other ones. It could use a slightly larger portion of salad, but they had some sauces that wonderfully complemented the fish. (They missed one scale on the fish which I unfortunately ate, but I'm asian, no big deal here). - 1 Lbs of Mussels app - This dish is also done everywhere but the sauce the mussels are cooked in was delicious. Me and my wife even took turns taking a spoonful of it after we had ate all the mussels :) Delicious! Even the toasted bread that came with it was delicious. - Spanish Octopus. Again, the octopus was fine, but the arugula salad that complimented it was delicious. Had like a truffle lemon dressing that just ate beautifully with the octopus. Dessert we had : - The baklava ice cream cake was amazing. We loved it. Loved the honey inside and everything. - The bread pudding we had was pretty disgusting. I don't know what happened to it. They served it flambéed by pouring a flaming liquid over the dish with the instruction to let it burn off before eating. So we waited for it to burn off, but maybe the fire went out before it all burned off or what, because it honestly tasted like kerosene. The bread pudding tasted very cold as well... we were expecting something warm and gooey, but blech.. everything went wrong. The waiter prompty apologized and refunded us it though, so honestly, another win for the great service here. Honestly, this restaurant is shockingly probably our favorite in La Jolla right now, outside of maybe Himitsu when we're in a sushi mood. We'll definitely be back. read more

The ambiance and service Beeside Balcony are great. But the food is neither particularly good to eat nor especially healthy. I tried it again recently after a few years to see if maybe it had gotten better. The fish and frites were oily and I mean disgustingly oily. The fish didn't taste especially good even after I had used various napkins to mop up the rivulets of stale smelling oil running all down it. My friend got the tacos and did not care for them. I guess they're getting by on location as are several restaurants nearby. But it's still a shame when you leave your meal feeling heavy and wishing you hadn't had it after all. read more

Amazing food, service, and atmosphere! I liked how they give performers an opportunity to do their gigs at their restaurant. The oysters are cooked nicely and has good, complex flavors for an appetizer. The seafood risotto is great-- not too mushy, very simple, and very delegate. Stumbled across this little gem of a restaurant while out walking with friends. We were seated almost immediately and the owner/chef actually came to greet us. After describing the specialty menu for the day, we chose to order a variety of meals and starters to share. Roasted beets, broccolini and truffle fries. Dinner included hanger steak, pesto pasta and shrimp, and scallops flavored to absolute heaven. The food and drinks were epic and the staff was so friendly. *Do NOT order the mussels* We generally like shellfish and saw a couple positive reviews about the mussels, so we ordered them as appetizers. They came less than 30 seconds later, way faster than expected, and our server said, "I went to put in your order, and the chef already had this plate ready to go!" We were hungry and excited to dig in, so we thought "lucky us!" In hindsight, I wonder if another table had already sent them back, and they tried redirecting them to us. The mussels smelled putrid. It's not that they tasted bad, or smelled a little off, they smelled straight up rancid. They say scent is the sense most linked to memory, and the smell reminded me of the time my brothers and I came across a decaying carcass washed up on the beach 20+ years ago. I am not exaggerating; it was that bad. We sent them back and were asked if we wanted them replaced, which was met with a resounding "no" from our whole group, and we moved on with dinner. I think the filet mignon and Chilean sea bass entrees were objectively pretty good but impossible to enjoy after that unappetizing experience. The mussels didn't just ruin the meal, I think they ruined mussels for me as a whole. Our server was great. Sensory Overload cocktail was delicious (drinks came before the mussels). The décor was cute. Live music outside was cool, but the music inside was at bar volumes - you had to raise your voice to carry a conversation. Luckily, none of us got food poisoning. One word for the food, service, and ambiance would be extraordinary. The food was not only beautifully displayed when it arrived, it was one of the best meals I have ever had. The staff was amazing from the very beginning. I called earlier that day to reserve a table for 13 and was pleased they were able to accommodate us for that evening. They asked if we were celebrating anything and I told them my nephew's birthday. When we arrived they had a birthday card for him with a hand written birthday message inside! The atmosphere is fresh, hip, clean, contemporary and has a view of the ocean. I love the bee theme. I even bought some of the honey they were selling. I got the CBD honey and love it. My kids ages 6 and 7 ordered from the kids menu, which was another plus for such a nice restaurant. My 6 year old even tried escargot and grilled octopus and said the octopus is one of his favorite foods now. The drink menu was also incredible. I got the black lava margarita and my husband got the lavender bees knees. I also got a white wine with my scallops and it was the perfect combo. We ended the dinner with a birthday dessert for my nephew. We all loved this restaurant and will definitely eat there again next time we're in La Jolla. read more
