Came here with the family while on vacation. Very family friendly, and the food was incredible. I had the Avocado Smash (toast) with smoke salmon. The bread was amazing, as was everything else. Everyone loved their food. I also had the Green Devotion drink, which tasted... very healthy. It's a cute and solid brunch spot that's always packed on the weekends. You might have to wait an hour but it's no big deal if you walk to the beach or get coffee in the meantime. Antojito/La Jolla Benedicts: Maybe? We got a mix and match and they were good but nothing to rave about tbh. It was a little bit lackluster flavor wise at that price point but still enjoyable nonetheless. I like the crunch from the antojito and that was a fun little spin on it. The La Jolla one was a good default and just adds a couple of ingredients over a regular bene. Stuffed french toast: Get If you have a sweet tooth then this a great way to start off the day. The ranch and fries were the only thing I genuinely enjoyed and even then my fries came out lukewarm at best. Serving a "mule" in a copper mug without straws was not it. The copper taste just made it unbearable to drink along with the lack of flavor and the fact that it tasted just flat (versus super sparkling like a regular mule...I would think not having real vodka in this should not impact bubbliness unless the soju killed the bubbles in the ginger beer?) We understand we came on a Sunday and who expected busyness but I think it was just worse than we were anticipating. Our server was nice no doubt but we'd asked for things, like lemons, and never received them and even asked a busser and never got them from either. It had been years since my last visit to The Cottage, but on a gorgeous, impromptu morning, we decided to follow our appetites and return. Weekday brunch worked in our favor parking was just a block away, and there was no wait, a welcome change from the usual crowds. The staff greeted us promptly and seated us on the patio, where the setting felt as charming as I remembered. I'm typically an eggs Benedict loyalist, but this time I was in the mood to explore more of the menu. We ordered the pastrami sandwich and the French dip, both generously stacked and visually promising. Unfortunately, while the portions impressed, the flavors didn't quite deliver. The pastrami felt like it was missing a key note something bright and tangy to balance it. I ended up adding dill pickles at home, which helped, but not enough to make it memorable. The French dip had a similar issue; the au jus leaned more toward a thick sauce rather than the lighter, savory broth you hope to dip into. The side salad was fresh, the fries perfectly crisp both enjoyable but they couldn't quite make up for the lack of depth in the sandwiches themselves. Next time, I'll stick with what they're known for and return to the breakfast classics. I'm not giving up on The Cottage just yet it simply deserves another chance, with a different order. read more

When visiting my family and I chose this spot due to convenance. Staff were super helpful and nice! Our server was amazing! The food was mid, I think there was no seasoning on the food but the stuffed mascarpone French toast made up for it 100% We subbed the compote for fresh fruit, the kids French toast was huge. As stated, there were the stairs. HE the host HELPED!!! We had looked at the menu before entering, to pick what we wanted ahead of time. I chose the Morning Glory Sandwich @ $22.00, with FRENCH FRIES AS A SUBSTITUTION. AND, Diet Coke. As for GONZALO, he chose the Antojito Benedict @ $23.00. AND, the Vita Berry Smoothie @ $12.00. My new favorite brunch spot in La Jolla! We came here on a Saturday morning and it was so good, definitely a one up on Sugar and Scribe across the street in my opinion if you are going head to head. We waited about 30 minutes to be seated outside. Got their Eggs La Jolla Benedict which was a unique tasting benedict with their balsamic mushrooms and roasted tomatoes on top. The balsamic gave the benedict a unique taste that I can't really describe, almost reminded me of a pizza. The potatoes weren't too crispy but good enough. We decided to try The Cottage La Jolla because of all the great reviews and the long line outside, so we were expecting the food and service to be amazing. Unfortunately, our experience was very disappointing. We waited quite a while for our food, and on top of that, no utensils were brought to our table. I ordered the All American Breakfast, and the chicken sausage was bland. The potatoes were also very bland, and my wife's English muffin was so hard it was difficult to even cut. There were also flies around the area where we were seated, which made the experience even worse. The service was honestly horrible. Our waitress was nowhere to be found for most of the meal and only really came back when we were almost finished eating. To top it off, when handing us the check, she asked if we were splitting the bill. We were clearly a family sitting together, and I found that question unnecessary and odd. Overall, the experience did not live up to the hype at all, and unfortunately we will not be coming back. read more

A La Jolla classic! My wife grew up in San Diego and has been coming here for over 30 years! Jason, the owner, is incredibly friendly and goes out his way to make a great dining experience. He's been there for over 20 years and does an amazing job running the restaurant!!! We went on a Monday around noon and it was crowded, but our wait time was 10-15 minutes. Service was incredible. I had the pastrami sandwich and it was 10/10. Toasted but soft marbled rye, a generous amount of meat, coleslaw... my mouth waters just thinking about it! My wife had a vegan hash (she loved it), kids had burgers (they were huge), and my grandmother in law had a Milanese sandwich (massive and great). It's a little tight on space and the interior is dated, but that doesn't detract from the experience. You can also dine outside on the massive front patio. Came here for Saturday brunch with two friends and had such a good experience! The wait was about 30 minutes, which honestly wasn't bad and gave us some time to just hang out and enjoy the morning. I ordered the Mexican Mocha and the Eggs La Jolla Benedict. The mocha was perfect with the right balance of chocolate and coffee. Not too sweet, just really smooth and comforting. The benedict was exactly the kind of savory breakfast I was craving. It didn't feel heavy at all. The balsamic mushrooms, spinach, roasted tomato, and poached egg all worked together so well, and the potatoes on the side were seasoned really nicely. My friend devoured the Morning Glory Sandwich within minutes and my other friend really enjoyed her Antojito Benedict. Giving 5 stars alone for the wait time since we were seated in under 10 minutes on a Saturday without needing a reservation like many other popular brunch spots. As soon as we were seated and greeted, we placed our orders and within a few minutes our drinks arrived. My husband did order a refill on his coffee, but he did not receive one until we asked again at the status of it towards the end of our meal. Our server was very kind and offered a refill in a to-go cup which we happily accepted. He really did enjoy his Mexican mochas! I had an iced matcha and honestly was so happy with it. Great matcha! Our food came out pretty quickly as well and i absolutely loved my avocado smash on rosemary bread. I had the cucumber, olive, onion, tomato, feta, and oregano version and I did add a fried egg on top. Everything was fresh and the flavors just melded together wonderfully. I could really tell the tomatoes and avocado were fresh. The rosemary bread was a great addition of flavor to the bunch. My husband enjoyed his Southern CA Omelette too. I was lucky to try any. I think the best part was the amount of fresh guac in the omelette. Overall we had a delicious meal, with attentive and kind service. No need for syrup, no butter, no problem I'm into it. I prefer my pork belly a little more crispy and seasoned but that's me. One of my favorite places so when it came to my birthday it was my choice for brunch. At 12:50 on a Sunday it was waiting room only. Yuma (hope I have her name right) was an excellent snd engaging hostess. She took great care of my folks and provided tremendous respect. Both mom and dad and was thrilled that not only did everyone find something but everyone enjoyed their order. That's a rarity. Dad devoured half his pastrami sandwich and we had to fight him for a fair share on the cinnamon roll. Mom really took her time and enjoyed her omelet. I had the special which was ok. The best way to top off the meal was the lemon cheese cake - OMG!! Even mom stopped water her omelet to get her fair share! The Cottage is a verrrry popular brunch place here in San Diego. Be prepared to wait at least 2 hours if you come at prime time. Seating is limited indoors but there seems to be a good amount of outdoor seating. They serve the typical brunch menu, but food here is fresh, generous, and quick. We ordered everything from pancakes, potatoes and hash, and even cinnamon rolls. The best dish however was the potatoes and hash because it came with eggs, bell peppers, roast beef, and potatoes. It was seasoned well and I actually enjoyed a brunch dish without hot sauce! Highly recommend. Overall, if you have time I highly recommend The Cottage. Don't come if you're hangry because you will definitely regret it and probably annoy everyone around you. read more

On vacation, my daughter insisted on trying this place because it is "The Cottage" and that relates to a TV show that she's obsessed with at the moment. The food and service were excellent. I don't normally order apple juice, but when I saw it I had to try one. It was delicious, essentially apple cider. My daughter ordered the watermelon juice, which looked lovely but didn't have much flavor. I got the lemon ricotta pancakes. They were delicious. I know this place must serve a lot of fussy and demanding people, because when the waiter brought my pancakes, a small amount of syrup had spilled from the little pitcher onto the plate, and he asked me if I wanted to have it replaced. Wow, it would never have occurred to me that people would be bothered by this at all! Of course I didn't send it back. That being said, I tasted the pancakes with the syrup and decided to not use any more syrup, they were flavorful and soft and just didn't need it at all! The butter or whatever magic substance in the dish was enough. Yum! We were all happy with the food. My daughter was thrilled to see a Tuna Melt on the menu, since apparently that is also featured on this show she watches. She was happy with it, though she had never had one before. She was somewhat disappointed to find out later that this was not a "Canadian style" tuna melt which apparently is open-faced. Over the years this place has not lost its charm, and has maintained the great quality of the dishes it offers. They were open for dinner for a while, but I guess that didnt work out(?). My favorite menu items are: - brioche french toast ($18.50) - avocado smash ($17+ (depending on toppings)) - braised beef hash ($20) - mexicali benedict ($19.75) (can you tell im a breakfast girlie? ) Either way, service is great - the owner is very friendly, and the staff is quick to offer their services if needed. We ordered sparkling wine and it was neither cold or bubbly; we sent this back with no issues. No reservations but seating was fast, even on a Saturday at 1pm. They have tables indoors and outdoors. The ambiance of the location inside and out is really cute, but I could not get over the fact that the outside smelled like urine. It really threw me and I turned to a hand sanitizer to try and mask the smell. By the time my food came out I was either nose blind or the smell of food distracted my brain enough. Even though I'm a stickler for first impressions, the food at The Cottage definitely makes up for any lacking they might have elsewhere. I ordered the crab and prosciutto benedict and ate every last bite. Their menu has some other eggs benedict that I am sure would be just as good. The hollandaise is extremely well done, and doesn't drown out the rest of the plate.
