We stumbled upon Bei Restaurant in Laguna Beach on a Sunday night and decided to give it a try. We had our service animal with us, so we sat outside on the patio. It was a bit chilly, but they brought out heaters which was really appreciated and made the experience much more comfortable. My boyfriend and I were starving, so we ordered pretty quickly. We went with the shareable platter that included beef and chicken kebabs, lamb chops, a Fattoush salad, garlic yogurt sauce, and hummus. We also added the spicy garlic potatoes and baba ghanoush with pita. Everything we had was solid -- good flavors, well-seasoned, and satisfying overall. That said, I don't think it's a spot I'd drive an hour and a half from LA specifically for, but if you're already in Laguna and craving Persian/Mediterranean food, it's a good option and worth a stop. I came to Bei Restaurant in Newport / Costa Mesa to meet a few friends who were already dining. They had already spent over $400 on food and hookah by the time I arrived. I didn't order anything, just came to say hi and sit with them. The evening started off on the wrong foot when our server (a white woman with a strong Eastern European accent, possibly Russian or Ukrainian) had an incredibly rude attitude. When my friends asked if we could move to another table to make room for me, she said yes, but then in the middle of my buddy talking to me she yelled loudly interrupting us, "Guys! Hellooooo, can you guys move?" This was the first red flag, especially since the restaurant wasn't busy at all. Later, a staff member changing our hookah coals accidentally dropped a burning coal directly on my brand-new $2,000 Dior shoes. He was very apologetic, and I completely understand that mistakes happen. Because of his kindness, I was willing to brush it off. But when I called the server over to let her know what happened, she instantly blew up on me and my friends. She said, "I was nice enough to move you guys' tables and let you sit here for free," as if she had done me some massive favor. She even implied it was my fault the coal fell on me. No apology, no empathy just attitude and blame. Eventually, the "manager" came over, and I will say he was extremely polite and tried to help. Unfortunately, the "solution" from the owner was to offer us a free $10 dessert for $2,000 shoes that are now completely ruined. Out of the "Managers" own words, "Daily I always fear a coal might fall on someone's shoes and today it happened to be your expensive Dior shoes" This whole thing could have been resolved with some basic customer service and accountability instead of clocking off and leaving on us (server) but instead, I have never left feeling more disrespected at a restaurant in my life and shocked. Although we had reservation for seven people and there were four other tables (2 to 4) people each, our food was delayed tremendously and came one at the time with l10 minutes between each plate. The order for one of us came after all of us finished our food. The server did his best, when we complained to the manager, he said that the kitchen was backed up with takeout orders. They still charged us 20% service fee for a horrible service. They were serving other tables that came after us leaving us to the end because they knew that they will collect the 20% no matter how bad the service was. Had a really great time at Bei on a Saturday evening for my husband's birthday. To start with, I loved their complimentary zaatar and chips. We ordered the stuffed spinach and muhammara, and a kebob plate. Everything tasted great. The drinks were good too! They served knefeh dessert on the house for the birthday (so sweet, thanks). Extra points for having hookah and a belly dancer perform while we were there! Both were such a pleasant surprise. I love Lebanese food, and had high hopes for this place. The ambiance was really nice, and had a very friendly staff. The combo shawarma was very flavorful but also very dry. We ordered the lentil soup as well, also great flavors, but cold. All of the food tasted like it was sitting out for a long time, and it didn't taste fresh. We ordered cocktails and 30 min went by, nothing was brought out. We said something to the server, and the manager came over about 10 min later and said they couldn't make my drink and that he would comp another choice. Good: Vibes were immaculate. Cauliflower appetizer was delicious. My friend who ordered the steak thought it was really good. Neutral/Bad: Service was okay. My food? Not good. I don't eat Mediterranean food a lot so I don't know what is authentic (some reviews on here say this place isn't authentic Lebanese), but this was probably the worst I've had. I'm vegetarian so I ordered the falafel meal. The falafel was dry, unappetizing, and has a very odd taste (I've had many falafels before, none tasted like this). I was really looking forward to the hummus as well, but why was it sour? To be specific, it tasted like spoiled bread. It wasn't a sour taste from lemons or limes, it was a "this food went bad" type of sour. After leaving the restaurant, both my friend and I felt very nauseous because everything was just drenched in oil. I eat a lot of fried stuff typically, but almost every food item was fried, making it hard for both of us to digest. **Side note: The reason I say service was okay was because we had a miscommunication with our server--I was deciding whether to order the falafel on its own or order the meal--ended up choosing the meal but I think our server may have heard me wrong (my friend confirmed that she heard me order the meal and not the appetizer). It's okay these things happen, but the server got kinda defensive at first when I brought it up. Later, when we changed the falafel from an appetizer to a meal, I was supposed to get 2 more falafels. The two extra they brought out were like HALF the size. Did they deliberately choose smaller ones? I don't know but that just doesn't seem right. At the end of the day, restaurants can have really great vibes, but if the food tastes bad, then doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of the restaurant? Came for the hookah but I need to come back for the food. WARNING: if you don't like smoke do not come here to eat after 8pm. Hookah is served after 8pm and there is no designated smoking area. It's all in one place, inside the restaurant. That being said this restaurant is not what I expected after seeing so many pictures and social media videos. It's actually very small! The decor is just as instagramable in-person as it is online. But it's a very small indoor-ish restaurant with not the greatest service. Hookah is $35 and they serve Al-fakher and Mazaya tobacco. They used the kaloud lotus heat management on their head (thank God because I'm so over hookah lounges using old school foil and coal). Hookah was great, took a while for them tot take our order and bring our hookah & tea though. They were playing Arabic music and it was definitely a vibe. My favorites are the Kafta kebab and sheesh Tawook plates. Everything is pretty authentic. I also really liked their hummus with chicken shwarma on it. The decor inside is nice. They have music sometimes. On my last visit, which was a Thursday evening, there was really nice music to add to the ambience. Watch out for parking though.
