Since it's on the smaller side and parking is very limited, I recommend making a reservation and arriving early. Thankfully, we were able to walk in and get seated within ~15 minutes. The restaurant offers complimentary pita chips with a sesame based dipping sauce. I've never had that at other Mediterranean restaurants, so it was a nice surprise. We tried the falafel which was pretty standard and served with tahini sauce. We really enjoyed the Bei combo platter! It was the perfect portion size to split between two people. The platter comes with lamb chops, chicken, kofta, steak, rice, salad, hummus, garlic paste, and yogurt sauce. My favorite was the steak and kofta. For dessert, we tried knafeh which is a traditional Mediterranean dessert with sweet cheese. This was my first time trying knafeh and it was unlike anything I've ever had. My family and I (including a toddler) were seated for dinner at 7:45pm. 5 minutes later a server (with salt and pepper hair) asks to seat us outside. All he says is there is hookah starting soon indoors and we need to be seated outside. When we go outside, it's freezing cold. Not okay for the 3 year old. He continues to say not to worry and he'll turn the heater on for us. It's windy and cold and we tell him we're not comfortable outdoors. He looks at us like he doesn't care and it's our problem. We told him we're didn't appreciate his poor customer service and he responds "well you can leave if you want to". When asked for his name, he wouldn't respond. For food, I ordered the beef shawarma and was encouraged to upgrade to the prime steak cut. I went ahead with the recommendation, but the meat wasn't what I was expecting for a prime cut--it was quite oily and fatty, and the portion felt small for $32. I came to Bei Restaurant in Newport / Costa Mesa to meet a few friends who were already dining. They had already spent over $400 on food and hookah by the time I arrived. I didn't order anything, just came to say hi and sit with them. The evening started off on the wrong foot when our server (a white woman with a strong Eastern European accent, possibly Russian or Ukrainian) had an incredibly rude attitude. When my friends asked if we could move to another table to make room for me, she said yes, but then in the middle of my buddy talking to me she yelled loudly interrupting us, "Guys! Hellooooo, can you guys move?" This was the first red flag, especially since the restaurant wasn't busy at all. Later, a staff member changing our hookah coals accidentally dropped a burning coal directly on my brand-new $2,000 Dior shoes. He was very apologetic, and I completely understand that mistakes happen. Because of his kindness, I was willing to brush it off. But when I called the server over to let her know what happened, she instantly blew up on me and my friends. She said, "I was nice enough to move you guys' tables and let you sit here for free," as if she had done me some massive favor. She even implied it was my fault the coal fell on me. No apology, no empathy just attitude and blame. Eventually, the "manager" came over, and I will say he was extremely polite and tried to help. Unfortunately, the "solution" from the owner was to offer us a free $10 dessert for $2,000 shoes that are now completely ruined. Out of the "Managers" own words, "Daily I always fear a coal might fall on someone's shoes and today it happened to be your expensive Dior shoes" This whole thing could have been resolved with some basic customer service and accountability instead of clocking off and leaving on us (server) but instead, I have never left feeling more disrespected at a restaurant in my life and shocked. Having eaten at hundreds of Lebanese restaurants across multiple states--and traveling back to Beirut once a year--I have a very high bar for authenticity. He isn't Lebanese himself, but he jokingly told us that he is becoming Lebanese more and more every day just from eating the food here! As for the food, my wife and I completely agreed that the chicken shawarma was easily the best I have ever had anywhere in the United States. It fully equals what you would eat at a high-quality restaurant in Lebanon. The toum (garlic spread), which is an absolute must for the chicken, was unbelievable. The hummus, baba ganoush, batata harra (spicy potatoes), and the fattoush salad were all absolutely amazing and perfectly seasoned. We finished the evening with an incredible knefeh for dessert. Although we had reservation for seven people and there were four other tables (2 to 4) people each, our food was delayed tremendously and came one at the time with l10 minutes between each plate. The order for one of us came after all of us finished our food. The server did his best, when we complained to the manager, he said that the kitchen was backed up with takeout orders. They still charged us 20% service fee for a horrible service. They were serving other tables that came after us leaving us to the end because they knew that they will collect the 20% no matter how bad the service was.
