Where do I start? Recently, my daughter married in Jersey. Friday night before the wedding, the groom's family was hosting a dinner (about 30) for out of town family & friends at the hotel. I was in charge of dessert. My daughter & I are all about the desserts. We look at the dessert menu before ordering food to make sure we have room & calories for dessert! So my choices had to be on target. My daughter loves donuts! Well not only did I find an excellent donut shop but beignets too! Pretty good, made to order donuts. Toffee was crunchy, toppings were good. Strawberry glaze wasn't thick enough for my preference, some of the glazes were a little thin and dried/soaked into the donut by the time I got home. They were all yummy though. Guy behind register can't do math, instead of taking 10% discount off of my box of dozen donuts per yelp check-in discount, he took 1$ off. OMG! This place is a hidden gem! On a whim, we decided to look for a donut place nearby and stopped in here. We certainly struck gold! The atmosphere is quaint and cozy. Donuts - nothing special & overpriced Beignets - I got them to-go. They were freshly made when I ordered them and promptly tossed into a bag with the powdered sugar thrown on top. Much to my disappointment, the bag was disgustingly oily and the powdered sugar got clumpy after absorbing all the oil. FINALLY a place near by to get fresh donuts!!! I love donuts and there's no Krispy Kreme around so Dunkin would do the job but this place was the cherry on top. I got their original cinnamon donut, the strawberry shortcake donut, the Oreo donut, and the Nutella donut. The original cinnamon donut..I would order just a dozen of those alone, they're warm and not too overly sweet and just right on your tastebuds. We stopped in looking for desert after dinner downtown and were surprised to find a coffee bar that made fresh beignets. Our skepticism melted after the first bite of these delicious little pillows of sweetness! Lightly crisp with perfectly cooked dough and just the thing for an early evening coffee. Went in during the downtime between a wedding ceremony and its reception. Found it on Yelp and gave it a try. It was easy to find and the shop was very clean and inviting. The guy behind the counter, who we think is the owner, was very friendly and he didn't rush us or any other customers to order. We sat at the bar and waited for our food. My wife and I shared an order of beignets and a cannoli donut. My wife also order the pumpkin spiced chai which she enjoyed. Everything was freshly fried and very tasty. This is a quaint little shop with extremely friendly service and nice clean and fortunately not loud (why do so many places insist on music that is way too loud?) music. The place is deceivingly simplistic and looks a little bare, but that is because they don't have a bunch of pasteries out getting stale by the time you order them. Each order is made up fresh on the spot meaning everything is absolutely fresh (and warm) when you get them. There is a plus and a minus to this. For those that are going to eat there, or grab one or two items for a quick jaunt back to the office, this works fine. For those that are going to be ordering more and waiting a while before eating them, there can be some issues. Hot topped donuts sitting in a cardboard box for any length of time can make things a bit messy. The box traps in the heat and steam, making the toppings melt all over the place, and the steam make the cardboard a bit messy. But I will say, even with that minor inconvenience, they are still far superior to most of the production line donut shops (DD, TIm Horton's, etc). The beignets are to die for. They are the best and closest I have found to what you would find in Cafe Du Monde this far north. I sort of wish they offered a similar Chicory/Coffee blend to go with them, and then you would have the full experience. But even without it, while they are a tad pricey for the size, they are wonderful and worth it as an occasional treat. read more
