Took my mom who is visiting from out of state for lunch- our experience was not good and I am sorry I took her here when showing her around. There were tons of flies all over the restaurant. I know it's an indoor and outdoor place but they could try to do something so their customers aren't constantly batting flies away- one even bit my mom! The waiter didn't introduce himself when he got to our table, we had to ask his name and he didn't seem to know much about the beer/food selections. My mom got a beef brisket sandwich with a house salad and I had a pastrami dip with a Caesar salad. When he brought our food, he brought my mom soup instead of her salad. When he did bring the side salad it was drenched in dressing, a whole inch of dressing just sitting in the bottom of the bowl. My Caesar was also way overdressed. Sandwiches were okay. Wow, not sure why I bothered to give this restaurant another try. It's been five years since I ate at Bella Union, but I really wanted the Mr Jacksonville pizza, so my husband places an order over the phone for above mentioned pizza with no cheese and add black olives. He drives out to Jacksonville, (which is a bit of a drive from where we live) to pick up our order. Once home, I inspect the pizza and there's literally no sauce, no pesto, but packed full of artichoke, literally nothing but half burnt crust and artichokes with some sloppily thrown on olives that were literally everywhere besides on the pizza. Pizza is okay, the toppings are the thing here. The Applegater is pretty good, aside from the crust. I remember eating here as a kid when I attended Britt Camps, and the food and service was much better. Ordered clams, and was extremely disappointed. The crunchiest grittiest clams I have ever eaten, couldn't even bite down on them for fear of breaking teeth on huge pieces of grit and calcium. I don't know where they get their clams, but they need to explore other purveyors and probably store them properly so they're not sitting in a tub of their own wastes. Service wasn't great, but not horrible. Maybe the kitchen staff needs to pull it together. update: went there for a work dinner party. Server had no idea what a Rye Manhattan was? Since their well bourbon is Old Crow (not great for manhattan) I asked for something else. Was so loud outside, the server had to ask me 3 times what I wanted. Food? meh. Ordered grilled halibut. In retrospect I should have ordered pasta, or steak. The fish was maybe 3 oz, and overcooked, with maybe only a tsp of sauce on it. The vegetables on the side weren't even warm. Bella Union is apparently about the pizza pie...and nothing else. The chicken cacciatore is awful, and the calamari, a watery, viscous "steak" burned on the outside and frighteningly rubbery inside, scary bad. This place gets packed before an event at The Brit, and service can be slow so beware if you are in a hurry. The bar is bland and nearly soulless, and while the patio seems to have a little flair, the booths are large, bright, and uninviting. The first interaction we had over the phone was pleasant, lady was nice, respectful and friendly. I feel bad for her having to deal with her rude manager. We had to wait 45 minutes for our food, and when we did get our food one of our sandwiches we're missing, WHICH IS FINE. We called back to let them know they gave us attitude over the phone, when we asked to come back to get it. When we got there we noticed that instead of getting the soup we ordered they put something completely random in the bag. That was my first straw, we went in to get the sandwich and to let them know that that wasn't the soup we ordered and the manager gave us attitude and was insanely rude saying that they were out of the soup and that she didn't know what we wanted her to do about it because she had someone in training like that was any excuse at all. That was my second straw. So we asked if maybe they could give us a discount or literally anything to make up for our lost time and our lost soup, and she came back at me with "well I'm giving you this sandwich" YES THE SANDWICH WE PAYED FOR! So she asked if we wanted some potato salads which we settled with, at this point I drew myself away from the situation because the way they were treating us was insanely uncalled for, they brought out my sandwich and potato salad we left and when we ate which was not long after we got our food and it was STALE! Will not be going back to this restaurant, pretty disappointed with the service. Have been a customer for 30+ years. It used to be great in years past. Due to the quality and service have only stopped in 3 times within the past year. 1) Ordered the special chicken dish. Chicken was dry and burnt covered in sauce they added a tip on my bill because I was there for a friends b-day party. Bad food and bad service. 2) Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. Seated and served water and the menu. After 25 minutes I noticed the table across from us was looking at their watches. They let us know they had been waiting over an hour for their food. We left without ordering. 3) Ordered pizza with some friends, after all what can go wrong with pizza. We all agreed it was cold and tasteless, mushy and everything that pizza should not be. I'm torn on this review. I love the atmosphere and I've had some good food, including their pizza which was okay, BUT, and this is a big BUT, my husband got sick after eating there. Then a co-worker of mine went there for oysters and ended up in the hospital and sick with severe food poisoning for a week. The last time we were sitting outside, we saw stray cats living under their porch. I'll still go there to have beer and other "safe" things, but no more food for me. I heard from someone who used to work there that their kitchen is NOT clean. Unfortunately, we live in Jacksonville and have few other places to go. read more

One of my least favorite places to go. Their customer service is a hit or miss. Their food is okay not great especially for the price. If they happen to be busy forget customer service. If you're specific on how you want your food made or things to be left out of your food you'll get the opposite of what you asked for. My wife and i love to come out to Jacksonville on the weekends to eat here. The staff are friendly and its great they have "water runners", as my wife hates having her cup empty and this solves that issue. I usually get something basic from there, like a burger and soup, and its always good. My wife generally gets something abit more "flashy" and sometimes its a big hit, and sometimes its just "good" which is good enough for me. read more

What a disappointment. From start ton finish my trip to Bella was a complete letdown. I went to dinner on a Saturday night with a group of girlfriends. We arrived at 6:30 and did not receive food until 7:45! Out waitress (Nicole) was slow to take our order, and then preceded to get it wrong. She also never asked us about dessert, and took far too long to bring our checks and return credit cards afterward. The food was alright, but when I pay $15 for an entree I expect amazing, and at the Bella I always get letdown. read more

I don't know when the food got so bad but everything taste like it was microwaved and/ or previously frozen. It is to bad as they have a great atmosphere and usually pretty good service the food is just not good especially for the price. Went to the Union on a Tuesday evening and found everything from the service to the meal absolutely excellent. I tried the creole ribeye steak special and, wow, was it great! The chef prepared the steak perfectly, and the veggies were also cooked to perfection. The red potatoes were particularly delicious with the creole seasoning providing just the right amount of spice. Topping off the meal we shared a gigantic piece of banana cream pie with Macadamia nuts. Again, we found it to be excellent. Can't say enough about our visit...except that we will certainly be back for more! Just hope that they maintain a semblance of consistency from visit to visit. read more

Unfortunately we just gave Bella the last opportunity to show it has returned to the great restaurant it used to be, and they failed miserably. We have been loyal customers for 17 years, and have sadly watched Bella, over the last year, get worse and worse...to the point where we won't be returning. We were in town and wanted to have pizza for dinner and chose this place based on Yelp and locals. Nice layout but the staff was inefficient and the service was very poor. We ordered a pizza and asked for them to add fresh tomatoes...they did, in a bowl as a side dish. The pizza was not that great, average at best. Medford is only 15 mins away, try there if you are looking for good pizza. Not sure about the rest of the menu, the place is popular so hopefully the other choices were better. read more

The bleu cheese blues We had a disappointing birthday party last Friday. Some of the not-awesome could be blamed on the fact that they were busy, but a few of the dishes were just poorly executed. The chicken, the clam chowder, the bruschetta and the salads were all sub-par. Three of nine of us felt like the meal was satisfactory. What was good? The ravioli and pizza, as well as the Fettuccine Alfredo. All of the pasta was really cooked perfectly. The live music was awesome. The ambiance was casual but classy. I loved the garlic butter and the sauteed zucchini was great. The lasting impression, however, was from our strangely rude server. Five of us had salads and a few of them were sparse, which we didn't complain about. But when one of our party asked for bleu cheese, I thought the difficulty of the request was going to make the server's head explode. She spent some time explaining that the salad didn't come with bleu cheese and then they did some back and forth for another 20 seconds about whether or not the lady could get cheese. I got tired of the arguing and said, "What is the problem? Please, just go get her some cheese." The waitress looked at me and said, "Well if I were to do that, it would mean I would have to walk back to the kitchen and bring out a side dish and charge you for it." And? Isn't that how restaurants work? Or do you want all of the bleu cheese to yourself? Or do we look poor, like maybe we can't afford a side of cheese? I swear I would have started laughing at her if I hadn't been so confused and pissed off. At that point it had become this big issue and our guest started to feel uncomfortable, so thanks for bringing on the weird. To that server: I hope you enjoy your $40 tip. Maybe you can use it to pay for lessons on how to take orders and bring food to tables. read more

We visited the cute little town of Jacksonville while camping nearby. After a few hours of window shopping, we decided to give Bella Union a try as the four of us were all hungry for Italian food. We had the option of sitting outside, in the dining room, or in the bar. We sat in the bar area and Tyler, who was working the bar, waited on us. Tyler was phenomenal. He was mixing drinks, taking orders, and making everyone feel welcome. We tried the cheese tortellini and meatballs, fettuccine with salmon, and the Angel Hair Ala Fresca with chicken. We all liked our dishes and would give the food four stars, but Tyler's service is what brought it up to five stars. Tyler's Long Island Iced tea was awesome and his attentiveness to our group was impressive, considering how many people he was waiting on while mixing drinks too. We finished our meal by sharing their delicious mud pie. This was a great find for us and will most definitely return the next time we're in Jacksonville. read more

Usually this place is pretty ok. Today was the exception. Bruschetta was plain awful. Nothing more needs to be said. I ordered the rabbit tenderloin over rice and portobello mushrooms. This was worse than awful. What is worse than awful? This dish. Rabbit was dry and chewy (think overcooked rubber). Rice and mushrooms were ok except that they put an egg yolk in the middle of the dish and when you mix it with the rice and mushrooms the entire dish tastes like egg yolk. Two people ordered this dish. Neither finished it. Both people would normally finish most of their meals. read more

I've never been to Southern Oregon before, until today, and my roomie told me that there was a restaurant in Jacksonville that she was just SO excited to take me to. Bella Union was awesome! We sat outside, which was great in the sun. Our server's name was Angela and she was quick and friendly. We ordered off of the specials menu, and for 6.50 a person, we each got a huge plate of pasta, bread, and a great little salad. Bella Union, used to be the swanky place to go in the Rogue Valley. I ha e lived here most of my life, I remember the swoons when that was the place you took your prom date, now I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. We went with a large part and on a Friday night so let the excuses begin. Now you must know that with a large party there is a mandatory gratituty added to your bill, so regardless how sorry the service is or no matter how bad the food is you are going to tip. It's posted I knew it was going to happen, doesn't mean I am happy about it. Insert excuse here..... it's a large party, pay sucks for restaurant works, blah what ever. I order the drink special, jalapeño infused vodka Moscow Mule, horrible, no mint which is an integral part of a Moscow Mule, I chalked it up as just being different and I can deal with it, should have stuck with something I know like water, hard to mess it up. Next comes the appetizer, and truly the best part of the meal, should have stopped here with the calamari not bad enjoyed it and the sauce was alright. Then the clam chowder and it wasn't even from a can just like the waitress said, however.... it was bland, no clams and the dominate flavor was flour. Yep used to thicken and if used as as a base white sauce really should have been cooked down further. Tried to fix it with salt and pepper and butter from the table. Ordered the Alfredo with smoked salmon, it is the Pacific North West after all. Oh and it's one of the cheaper meals at 20.00. Nice presentation, Alfredo sauce so so, pasta pretty standard, smoked salmon awful, the absolute worst ever I am still sick almost twelve hours later. Now this is just a theory but I believe someone took some salmon soaked it and smothered it in liquid smoke and attempted to call it smoked salmon. I reached this conclusion at the first bite, should have sent that shit back, but sucked it up and ate it washed it down with some swill wine probably paid ten bucks a glass for. Dessert yep still suffering through another course, Mud pie and it was so so had better pie at the local truck stop. My wife had the lasagna, it's the only part of her meal I can talk about. Presentation, horrible it looked like someone took a spoon full of meat spegatti sauce and tossed it in a bowl and put a lasagna noodle on top and called it good. I had a bit of this pile of poop and it tasted of nothing but green pepper because this was the main ingredient. So my experience was horrible especially for 200.00 with that added tip, her service was sub par but her tip was great! In conclusion I won't be back, no loss I know, but I have told and am telling all my friends not to go there, there is better food to be had at Olive Garden for half the price, and if you wasn't pizza I recommend Mod pizza. If you want to impress somebody be with the depth of your wallet and don't care about your food or the gastrointestinal well being then this is the place for you! read more

My wife and I went to Bella Union for dinner on Saturday evening. I thought the place was fantastic. We were greeted promptly by the hostess, and were seated at the patio a couple of minutes later. Our server Josh was amazing. He gave exemplary service, making sure that our drinks were refilled even before we were finished with the first one. His knowledge of the menu was spot on. The food that we ate was quite good. The bread that was served came with garlic butter. We had the garden salad, which was freshly made. The chicken lasagna was made with smoked chicken. The chicken cordon bleu was fantastic. The prices were a bit on the high side; however paying $ 44 for two dinners and two sodas is not a bad deal. You get what you pay for. My gripe with high prices is "why do we have to pay $3 for a soda and iced tea?" I would definitely eat at the Bella Union again if given the chance to do so. read more

We went this past Sunday to celebrate a 6 year olds birthday. First time dining there. The restaurant is in a very nice old building and patio has beautiful natural ambiance. There were quite a few people dining but the service was fast and friendly. The food however was really disgusting and overpriced. We ordered two "mediterianian salads" one topped with "salmon". When the arrived it seemed as though they were short on lettuce, they were very small for the 13 dollar price tag and obviously topped with low quality jarred olives, red peppers and small amounts of cheese, they came with a huge side of dressing that the salad could have easily swam in. The "salmon" was either the lowest quality farmed salmon you can buy or trout. The pizza looked good the kids didnt eat very much though and tried a few toppings, cheap canned pineapple and jalapeno, no thanks, not for 27 dollars a medium pizza, are you kidding? Everything kind of tasted the same and like it hung out in a smelly fridge. The water tasted like hot plastic. They did give us a Sunday on the house for the birthday and the waiter was sweet to help us sing in celebration...even then I wouldn't go back due to the poor quality and price of food. It blows my mind they get so much business but maybe those folks only cook with a microwave. read more

I like this place. Their caesar dressing is definitely a worthy opponent of the king of all caesars at Kaleidoscope. They have, hands down, the BEST croutons I have ever tasted. They sell them in the front of the restaurant in to-go containers. I could eat those things like chips, they're so good. The garlic-herb butter that they serve with their bread is divine. I had a pasta (can't remember the name) that was basically fettucine alfredo with spinach and chicken. I think it may have had mushrooms as well. It was really, really good. I got the half order and I still had enough to take home for lunch the next day (even though anything with cream sauce is not so great the next day...the butter separates and the cream sauce becomes a greasy butter sauce; not Bella Union's fault, that's just the way things go with cream sauce). My mom had the rib eye steak, which came with an AMAZING "re-stuffed" potato; I am DEFINITELY getting that next time I go there. Mom's hubby had a seafood dish, so I didn't eat that (I have to be in the mood for seafood). Kiddo had the kid's pepperoni and pineapple pizza that was pretty good, and actually a DECENT size. For dessert, I had the cookies and cream cheesecake (the flavor of the cheesecakes vary from day to day), which had a delicious Oreo crust. Mom's hubby had a banana cream pie-type thing that none of us liked. That was the only dent in the experience, but hey....if that's the worst thing that can happen, it's still a good night. I didn't try any beers or cocktails that night, but the bar was packed. Mostly older, more upscale crowd and a classic rock cover band. Oh, and we decided to dine on the patio, and to do so you have to go through the bar, which means you walk right past the band on your way down the stairs, which is a little bit awkward. It feels disrespectful. But, they don't seem to have a legit stage, the band kind of performs on the stairs, more or less. Still not a huge deal, but I have to wonder how the bands that perform there feel about it. All in all, it's a good place to eat. It's a bit on the pricey side, but pretty much worth it. Waitress was friendly and prompt. Probably a good date spot, and Jacksonville is a really cute little town. It kind of reminds me of Calistoga, CA. You should check it out. read more
