Super excited! October is National Pasta Month! On October 1, Bellegarde Bakery will offer freshly made pasta in a variety of shapes from its retail store! Bellegarde's pasta is made with 100% freshly stone milled flour from the bakery and is a perfect complement to any meal. Bellegarde's new retail bakery, located at 8300 Apple Street, is open Tuesday - Saturday, 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM. I am so excited to try this: Casarecce: 100% Organic Wheat, Malfaldine: 100% Durum Flour, Rigatoni: 100% Durum Flour, Spaghetti: 100% Organic Wheat and Strozzapreti: 100% Organic Wheat.

Dough my goodness! They serve PIZZA!!! Thursday night is pizza night at Bellegarde and it's amazing. The dough is the same high quality as their breads and the artisan toppings make for a gourmet za. Oh yeah, if it's not Thursday, their bread is pretty solid as well.

The chocolate croissant was delicious. Not too sweet, just the right amount of chocolate and very flaky. The cinnamon morning bun was very crispy, which was unexpected, but outstanding nonetheless. Keep in mind there is no indoor seating, but there are several small tables on the porch that made for truly pleasant coffee and pastry experience. We loved watching the bakers through the window while we ate. Definitely give this gem a try!

This bakery puts out very hearty loaves made with as much locally sourced grain as possible and in fact the owner is leading a movement to establish more local sources for grains. Personally I am not a fan of white bread and like my bread dark and full of whole grains and the Bellegarde breads certainly deliver in the hearty strong category and blow the weak white bread options away. The bread is so hearty and many varieties so chewy I find them not always the best suited for sandwiches and some varieties are better used in other applications or just stand well on their own. My favorite Bellegarde bread so far is the Country Rye.

You can't go wrong with fresh crusty bread. I love all the options we have in New Orleans now and Bellegarde is one of the best.

The best bread I have ever had. Stone milling makes all the difference - so grateful that they utilize this traditional craft.

We were a party of 3 adults and 2 children (one being only 2 years old), and because of that they changed our table type from a 4-top to a 5-top and made us wait an additional 30 minutes. Meanwhile, multiple tables became available that easily could have accommodated us, but the hostess was determined to keep telling us we had to wait. To make matters worse, there was open bench seating in the back where customers ordering to-go could sit. I offered to order food to-go so we could at least sit down and get started while waiting, and she told me if I did that they would remove our name from the waitlist because "you have to pick one or the other." No willingness to problem solve whatsoever. She repeatedly said she was "sorry," but her actions showed the opposite. I was simply trying to work together to find some reasonable solution instead of continuing to watch everyone else get seated while our family, including small children, kept waiting. Absolutely horrible customer service experience.

What I got: Kaya bun (10/5) -- no sweetness whatsoever, just pure coconut pandan flavor coming through. Custard had the perfect consistency--thick, creamy, and has a slight egginess that, if you are familiar with dan taat, will appreciate--and did not leech any moisture into the pastry. Also love the choice of coating in dessicated coconut since it again did not add any sweetness and the fineness melted in your mouth with each bite. Pastry itself was buttery and tender with a slight chew crawssant (5/5) -- a seasonal item of twice baked croissant filled with crawfish and mozzarella. Buttery, flaky, gooey with a kiss of heat...it was fun and satisfying to eat not to mention filling. Surely, I will return to pick up some pastries for my loved ones back home.

Their coffee is also really good and pairs perfectly with the food. The staff does a great job keeping up with the rush. The only downsides come down to space and logistics: Limited Seating: There is very little room inside, so it fills up fast. Outdoor Seating & Smoking: Because inside is tight, you often have to sit outside. Unfortunately, people were smoking in the outdoor seating area, which makes for a pretty unpleasant experience if you're trying to enjoy your food and fresh air. Parking: It can be quite a hassle to find a spot on busy days, so be prepared to circle the block. Overall, the food and drinks are a 5/5 and absolutely worth the trip, just keep the seating and parking limitations in mind if you're planning to stay and eat!

This French bakery offers authentic pastries, hand-made croissants, brunch fare, & espresso drinks. The high-ceilings, white tile, and marble tabletops emit a European café vibe. There is also a charming courtyard if you want to soak in some sunshine. I first learned about this bakery when staying at the Hotel Villa Convento across the street. They served their buttery rich croissants as part of their continental breakfast. (I'm not sure if they still do.) Now that I have a house in the Quarter, I take a morning stroll over here to pick up croissants to take home. The butter croissants are a bargain at $3.50. I also love the chocolate & almond (both are $3.95 each), as well as the crisp & flaky Palmiers & delicate Almond Florentines. When I have guests, I bring them back a Ham & Cheese Croissant - a bargain at $5.50. They always ask me to bring another the next day.
