Bellegarde Bakery provides the bread to over 30 NOLA restaurants. There's a retail outlet and sandwich shop at the bakery in a warehouse district a few blocks from the Lower Garden District. And the bread is great. My wife bakes sour dough bread at home and even she is super impressed with Bellegarde's product. I'm impressed with the taste and texture. This is htg great bread. The po boy loaves are great for holding together the sandwich fixings and smushes flat so you can get your mouth around it, but it is essentially a delivery mechanism. Bellegarde's on the other hand can stand up to the best bread anywhere. Crusty. Big, irregular holes. And tasty. Give it a try. read more

There are a lot of bakeries in NOLA making good bread and pastries but how many can say that their's is also good for you? That's what I love about Bellegarde not only are they making the best French bread in the city and some delicious pastries but their stuff is good for you. They only use stones milled grains and therefore offer baked goods and pastas that are nutritiously good for you. Their croissants and seasonal focaccia are tops and if you have a sweet tooth the Chocolate Pecan Bostock can't be beat! Note that they are now holding Pizza nights on Thursday and they make an excellent cheat meal ;-) read more

Rye bread loaf- mild and sour, the best rye bread Ive ever tasted. Excellent eaten plain or toasted with butter, peanut butter, tuna salad. Versatile. Chocolate croissant- slightly overbaked/too brown. chocolate could have been better distributed in croissant. ham & brie sandwich. I have been craving one of these. Last time I had one was in New York City. The ham was smokey, thinly sliced and the roll was soft snd crispy at the same time- absolutely excellent. The brie was so soft. I do like my ham and brie with baby Romaine and thinly sliced red onions so that is the only suggestion I'd have to improve the sandwich. First time here and highly recommend! read more

This bakery is already rated five stars by all others, and they deserve it because their products are amazing. But, if a customer is simply buying several baguettes from this bakery, should they be asked to tip the salesperson? I think that this business should pay competitive and living wages to their employees. I obviously don't mind paying any price for the baguette if I'm traveling from another part of the city. This is not a location to purchase bread. This is the commercial bakery. You have to go to a store who carries their bread. That being said...oh yum. This is more European than much of the bread around NOLA with a thick heavier crust on their baguettes...which I say as someone who loves a crust. You may have already had their delicious bread as many restaurants around town use it. Check out their website for their current retail partners which include wine shops and local groceries. Dough my goodness! They serve PIZZA!!! Thursday night is pizza night at Bellegarde and it's amazing. The dough is the same high quality as their breads and the artisan toppings make for a gourmet za. Oh yeah, if it's not Thursday, their bread is pretty solid as well. read more

The chocolate croissant was delicious. Not too sweet, just the right amount of chocolate and very flaky. The cinnamon morning bun was very crispy, which was unexpected, but outstanding nonetheless. Keep in mind there is no indoor seating, but there are several small tables on the porch that made for truly pleasant coffee and pastry experience. We loved watching the bakers through the window while we ate. Definitely give this gem a try! read more

Bellegarde is the best bread experience I've ever had! Not only are the breads delicious (sour dough is my favorite!) but the various sandwiches are so fresh and tasty. I love seeing the 'back stage' where it all happens. Watching the bakery workers is really entertaining! This bakery puts out very hearty loaves made with as much locally sourced grain as possible and in fact the owner is leading a movement to establish more local sources for grains. Personally I am not a fan of white bread and like my bread dark and full of whole grains and the Bellegarde breads certainly deliver in the hearty strong category and blow the weak white bread options away. The bread is so hearty and many varieties so chewy I find them not always the best suited for sandwiches and some varieties are better used in other applications or just stand well on their own. My favorite Bellegarde bread so far is the Country Rye. read more

We live a street over and it was our first time here but definitely won't be our last! I had the cold brew which was really fresh and refreshing. My wife had the drip coffee which was very good and fresh. We shared the tomato and mixed green sandwich, OMG, so good, it had a fresh pesto spread, fresh tomatoes and fresh arugula. We also shared their butter croissant which again was very fresh and flaky! I can't wait to go back, I've already told some of our friends to go and try! read more

Stopped in because they'd opened they're little retail operation. What a gorgeous space! The space open to the public is small, but you can grab some fresh-baked bread, some really interesting bread too (I'm a little embarrassed to say the only OTHER time I saw a couronne was on the Great British Bake Off), and a cup of coffee. I took the Baguette class and It was an amazing experience. Graison definitely knows bread baking inside out and he makes every effort to impart as much knowledge as the student can absorb. His generous nature extends to the amount of finished product you can take home after the class. I took home so many baguettes I had to share with my neighbors around me, ate a few loaves, and was able to freeze a few. While there, I bought fresh pasta made on the premises; oh my! You can't go wrong with fresh crusty bread. I love all the options we have in New Orleans now and Bellegarde is one of the best.

This guy's breads would hold up in France. He has a very good miche, a pecan/dried fig bread and a few others. I get his bread at the farmers market downtown in New Orleans on Sat morning. He also gives samples at the market so you can try before buying. I really hope that he sticks around for a long time. You can also get his breads at Whole Foods (on Magazine at least) and at a Cheese shop in the Garden District. read more

Bellegarde Bakery has done an amazing job at turning their bread into art. It is the best bakery I have ever been to. The breads are super fresh, my favorite is the whole grain maize baguette. Nice crumb, better flavor. I could taste the premium ingredients. I was also told that they offer bakery workshops. Hopefully I will be able to sign up for a workshop soon and meet the owner Graison.
