I'd been curious about Bells and Whistles for awhile as I'd heard that they had some arcade games and skeeball at the back of their restaurant. The menu looked attractive enough to consider trying out. After dining here, I don't think I would come back again. I really chose this place more for my daughter's sake than my own. There was a friend of hers that she hadn't seen in awhile so we thought it would be nice to organize a lunch at this place where she could see her friend and the girls could have a bit of fun with the arcade games and skeeball. The food was "meh". I ordered a Grilled Avocado Benedict. Didn't taste much grill flavor in the avocado and the egg was overcooked. That's got to be my biggest pet peeve when it comes to any Eggs Benedict dish. Runny yolk is what I always hope to see. This was a very dry yolk. No regrets about coming here as the girls did have fun together and that was my main reason for choosing this place. Just won't be coming here again though. read more

Came here for a late weekday meal with some sports friends. We had a dog with us, so needed a patio seat. Luckily the patio wraps around so there are plenty of tables. We shared the deep fried pickles to start. Not what I expected. They were cut across, not lengthwise. They taste like the glass jar of Bicks sweet pickles, but deep fried. They very well could have been. I had the Mighty Burger with fries. $19 for a single smash burger with cheese, bacon, and onion ring, that's pretty good nowadays. It comes with BBQ sauce and no mayo, just how I prefer it. Mine had 2 bottom buns, I'm still not sure if this was intentional or not. There's a large screen inside and they were streaming the Olympics which was great. Arcade games and skeeball in the back. That's always fun. read more

The perfect place to watch a game or hangout with a group of friends. The restaurant is split into two areas -- on one half has a bar/pub vibe and the other half bas more of a restaurant vibe. They have a huge screen which we watched the Canucks game on We ordered: Classic Margarita $14.00 Guac & Chips $13.50 Fish & Chips $25.00 Royal Burger With Cheese $23.00 The guacamole was fresh and the chips were perfectly crispy...I wish we had ordered two servings of it . This place has such a chill vibe! Go for game day gatherings and/or to kick off the weekend; stay for the elevated bar food and refreshed cocktail list (newer to me at least). There are also some arcade games tucked off to the side! The pretzel buns are an absolute, must-order. Honestly, it's 98% the reason I keep coming back! The bun is so warm and fluffy, with a slightly crisp exterior and just the right amount of salt sprinkled on top. The honey mustard dip is extremely craveable too. On my latest trip, I tried the mighty burger for the first time. One bite and I understood why it's their feature! I don't usually order burgers, anywhere, but all the elements sounded good and it was one of the more affordable options at $19. A single smash beef patty, draped with melty American cheese, bacon and an onion ring, stuffed between the two bbq-sauced buns, stole my heart. Pretzel buns still reign supreme, but this burger was a very close second. And the fries, with whatever secret sauce they're serving on the side, is also perfection. My only reason for not making this review 5-star was that service was slow. I sympathize with the ongoing labour shortages' effect on the hospitality industry, but my family of 3 was --from my count -- one of five tables in the entire restaurant. Nice atmosphere if you want a fun (and very loud) bar environment. Has outdoor seating if you want a bit less noise or you still care about covid. Due to this neighborhood being zoned almost totally for low-density housing, there isn't much competition here, so they can get away with very high prices for mid-tier food. It's $22 to $24 for a burger, and not some kind of gourmet super high quality burger, just a good-sized normal burger. I'll drop by here if friends want to eat in the neighborhood and can't be bothered to drive 15 minutes, but there's not too much reason to eat here if you're willing to get in a car or even ride a bike. read more

I walked in a weekday afternoon to grab a quick bite since I lived in the neighbourhood. The place was quiet during this time. But, noticed that they have giant screens that would be great for watching sports matches as well as some arcades in one of the rooms. Even though I didn't drink, I noticed that they had a wide variety of beers. The Hot Crunch burger I ordered was delicious, the flavours were bold and well-balanced and the heat level was just right for my taste. The added crunch from the toppings provided a great texture contrast. The portion size was also generous and it was very filling. The fries on the side were crispy as well. Staff was friendly, they were attentive and always checked in to make sure everything was good. Kinda like a Chuck E. Cheeses for adults. Order typical bar type food such as burgers, fries and beer. While waiting for your order to be filled, walk over to the corner of the restaurant, buy some tokens ($1 each) and play either the basketball game or the skee ball game to kill time. When the food arrives, you'll notice that the presentation is nice, but the serving size is on the tinier side, especially for the price you paid. We've sampled the tuna burger, rib burger and beef burgers. All tasted okay, but places like White Spot won't be losing sleep over fears of competition. The Tuna Poke Bowl was decent, with fairly fresh, reddish Ahi Tuna. Their Garlic Fries were excellent, but portion was Hobbit-sized. Order an ice-cream sundae for dessert, and you can pick the toppings. Overall, Bells and Whistles should either charge 20% less money for the food, or increase portion size by 20%. Bells and Whistles has an extensive catalog of beers and liquors. Their walls list their offerings in large font lettering. If you're adventurous, you can systematically try each beer and check them off the list. Staff are friendly, and neighborhood parking is readily available except for Sunday mornings when a nearby church is having service. Patio seating is also available seasonally. I enjoyed my experience here. The fish and chips were different and good. I really liked the drink selection. We sat outside on the patio which was nice, because it was VERY loud inside. So loud, I couldn't have a conversation with my friend. My only gripe was the service. It took forever for our waiter to come to us, and forever to get our drinks and forever to wave him down etc etc. He was a really nice guy but man, painfully slow. Now, when I went, it was for brunch, so I decided for a coffee instead, but I'll be sure to come back for a pint or two soon. Speaking of brunch, while their brunch menu did look very interesting (which is available on weekends from 10am to 2pm), since I heard that Bells and Whistles are known for their burgers, I haaad to give those a try! I ended up going with "The Fancy", which was very fancy indeed. I'm talking about goat cheese, I'm talking about truffle-basil aioli. Not to mention, there was a layer of amazing, herb-roasted mushrooms and onions. I really liked how all those flavours and textures worked with each other. The buns were buttered and toasted so that the edges were almost crispy. I really liked that! Their beef patty was solid too, juicy and thicc. The truffle aioli and the mushrooms gave a solid punch of umami, while the goat cheese provided a very rich creaminess to the burger. The tomato, sprouts, and pickles balanced the richness with a bit of acidity and freshness. While I did find the burger to be a bit on the pricier side, each meal does come with a decent serving of fries and the burger itself was bomb. Came here today with 20 tennis peeps to watch the US Women's Final on their 100inch screen. The house was paced and, understandably, the staff were working hard to get drinks and food out as fast as possible. Can't fault them for a slower service today. Loved it was a neighbourhood restaurant with a variety of beers and thus another option than a pub. Open and airy so felt very comfortable. Decor is like IKEA meets 1970's. Also enjoyed seeing a whole range of ages from little ones to older adults. 5 stars just for this. With so many friend, I got to sneak my fingers in to try a bunch of stuff: Pineapple Sriracha Chicken Wings-had a nice kick and the heat lingering in my mouth. Very crispy but some parts were burnt. If you can't take spicy heat then this may not be for you. Onion Rings with a tangy honey mustard sauce-light and crispy and not bad. Portion smaller than other places. Fancy Burger-the perfect crispy fries with a garlic dip. So good! Came piping hot so scored bonus points for me. The burger was smaller compared to other places but I was really full after eating it. Radler beer-current beer were listed on the wall. Can't go wrong and glad they had it today. My friends really enjoyed the fish bowl Pink Sangria but wished it came in a pitcher for easy pouring instead of the long straws sticking out of the fish bowl for couples. Okay this place is a bit of a love-hate for me. I spent most of quarantine ordering their pretzel buns (WHYYYY would you take them off the menu??? I'm heartbroken) as well as the rest of their menu and loooooved everything. I was out with a friend one day and knew I had to bring them to try some of the stuff I had been ordering. We waited to be seated for five minutes or so- was starting to get worried that we would never get greeted. Once we sat down we had a charismatic guy take our order and tell us all about some of the beer selection. The drinks took FOREVER. mind you, I got a water and my friend got a beer. After nearly 15 minutes waiting, someone came out and told us that her beer wasn't available anymore. We totally understand that beers cycle through but it sucked to have to wait that long before someone told us and they didn't even bother to bring us water in the meantime. We had to flag someone down to take our order. The food was good quality so no complaints there. Keep doing whatever you're doing kitchen team! You are KILLING IT. about 10 minutes after we finished our food, I made a comment to my friend about not seeing our server for a while... she points at the bar and says "oh he's sitting right there" our server WAS SITTING AT THE BAR HAVING A DRINK lol I get your shift is over or whatever, but maybe let someone know so that we can continue to get service? 3.5 stars. The vibes, decor and staff are great. It appears that they are trying to revitalize this neighborhood with place and several others. One thing I found is that it is super loud in here. My friends and I felt like we had to yell, just to talk to one another. It would be good if they had some sort of sound dampener or absorber so that it doesn't echo so much. I got the Hot Rush and garlic fries. The burger had a little heat but wasn't that spicy. Was hoping to be a bit spicier. The bun was a sesame one which was soft and not oily. I like this type of bun more than the plan bun. The meat had a smoky taste to it and was juicy. The fries had a lot of garlic so bring some breath mints. I really loved the decor inside Bells and Whistles! It was bright, fun, spacious and I can really imagine it to be a perfect place to gather with friends to watch sport games (especially with the Olympic games going on!). We ordered fried cauliflowers (found under Korean Fried Chicken -KFC- and substituted for fried cauliflowers), the All Day Breakfast Burger substituted with Onion Rings, and a side of Fries. The portions were very small considering the price, and we found it a little pricey. The fried cauliflowers - $10, and side order of fries - $5 came in a very small basket. The All Day Breakfast Burger - $17 (including the side order of onion rings) was a delicious combination of breakfast and lunch, but we just thought that the combo was also a little pricey. We also noticed the cheese resembled Kraft Dinner slices of processed cheese rather than authentic cheese. All in all, I really enjoyed the atmosphere and ambiance in Bells and Whisltes. Our server was great and the food was certainly enjoyable (despite the price). Came in with my wife and 15 month old baby. We both had burgers and fries. Burgers tasted great - mine had two crushed patties and hers had one regular patty. Both could have used bacon, but were otherwise tasty. Fries were awesome - I had curly and she had regular. Both sets of fries had a good crispy quality to them that makes the fries taste great. Unfortunately, there's been a lot of staff turnover and it's gone downhill since they hired a youthful new manager, clearly drunk with power at his first grownup job. After lunch this past Sunday, my boyfriend and I decided to finally pay Bells and Whistles a visit as we were in the area. I'm going to keep this brief because we only popped in here for a quick drink and didn't get a chance to try their food, but we weren't impressed. We each started with a Michelada - these were tasty and well-mixed with a refreshing lager. Steak spice rim they went with was also great, so in the drinks area, they earned a star. The decor is also very cheeky and well thought out. The muted colour palette, beer list wall, skeeball, and abundant plants make for a really inviting environment, which warrants another star. Where Bells and Whistles loses me is their abysmal service. I'm an easygoing customer, but when I come to a bar/taproom, I feel like the status of my drink should be checked on at least once, especially if I'm one of maybe twelve customers. We were there for over an hour and not once did our server even walk by to check if our drinks were empty. Instead, she spent the entire time chatting with three other servers by the kitchen, and none of them made any effort to check on any of their customers. For an hour. I even saw one angry customer come in from the patio to find his server after waiting too long for the bill. It's a shame because I really wanted to like this place, and my boyfriend and I would've ordered a few more rounds of drinks too. But I don't think we'll be coming back anytime soon as there are an abundance of dope places to drink in Vancouver... Ones where you don't have to feel like you're interrupting a conversation to get some service. read more

Family friendly, so that's a positive - but there's only a few distractions for the kids - and they get kinda bored quick. Standard food. Nothing memorable. Drink selection is pretty decent, and there some rare gems on the beer list. Taps are rotated frequently, so you always find new surprises. Stopped by on a Friday early evening. The room is quite big with large full height windows letting in plenty of light. The place was packed with standing room only around the outside and a games area...yes a games area. There is an outdoor patio but as it was a cold wet evening, the patio was closed. The staff were friendly and attentive and the place had a youthful high energy atmosphere...perhaps as they had a playoff game on the big screen. We came as I heard they had a good beer selection. They have rotational taps and a list of 12 regular taps...which includes 2 ciders for those that are not beer lovers. I checked on-line for the rotational beers and decided to stop by as they had a nice double IPA from Persephone. Unfortunately it was not on the current rotational tap list. And five of the beverages on the the current list (big board) were out. While they do have a nice selection of beers, the two IPAs I sampled were okay...nothing special. In checking further I see that the on-line rotation tap list was last updated 3 weeks prior to my visit. My recommendation would be to update the list daily (like St A's) for those that are considering coming by for a specific beverage. While this is a nice addition to the developing Fraser & Kingsway area, we have no plans to return. read more

This casual dining restaurant has a nice patio area and each table is separated by plexiglass to follow Covid-19 protocols. The servers are always sanitizing tables and other surfaces. The food is delicious. I have been here many times. It's a popular neighbourhood eatery. I like the succulent and tasty honey chipotle and herb mustard wings. The chicken and waffle poutine is fantastic. The fancy burger with the beef patty, goat cheese, mushrooms, sprouts and other ingredients make this burger awesome. The Bumblebee Tuna burger is amazingly light and delicious. The burgers come with fries and a Rosemary - Garlic Aioli dip that's tasty too. To finish off a meal, I like the Twist soft serve ice cream with Oreo cookies and Rainbow Sprinkles on it. The fun part is that you get to choose what toppings you want on the ice cream. I've tried more dishes and everything I've had has always been great. The servers are friendly, attentive and professional. This is one of my favourite eateries. My recent visit was a bit disappointing. My first visit last summer was impressive but yesterday wasn't the same experience. The food here isn't as good as it once was. They changed some of the burgers on the menu. The class burger was mediocre. They changed the bun and the size shrunk considerably. The best part of the meal was the onion rings. The kfc chicken wasn't very good. It was too salty and wasn't what I expected. It was made with some kind of teriyaki sauce which Was disappointing . I thought it would be a spicy crunchy chicken but it was a mushy chicken because of the sauce. The poutine with fried chicken was good. We had the all pies on me soft serve ice cream and it was ok. The apples were a bit too mushy and didn't taste fresh. The meal was quite expensive for what we got. Not sure if I'll be back again. read more

We ordered the breakfast burgers, and the classic burger, and they were delicious! The breakfast burger was an all day item, and it includes a crispy hash brown! For those who never tried...you HAVE to put your hash brown in your breakfast burger (A&W, McDonald, etc). It's life changing! Checked this place out as I always pass by it and it always seems busy. Went inside and the atmosphere and ambience were nice. Good music with a causal feel to it. Beer selection was good and they have a rotating collection that's always posted on the wall. I would say that the food was sub par. We ordered the crispy chicken sandwich, fries, onion rings, garlic fries and the big ring burger. In general, we found the food to be of good quality ingredients, however, everything seemed way too salty. The garlic fries was so salty, it was almost inedible. Service was also poor as our server never followed up on foods and drinks and we always had to call for her instead of being proactive with our service. I would say if you're looking for a chill place with a good vibe for beers and cocktails, this is a place to check out, but i would skip the food. read more

Third time and I'm still not impressed by this place. It's a shame as it's in such a great location and the space is very nice. The staff were grumpy and seemed unenthusiastic to be working. I ordered the black current sour $8. It arrived in a small wineglass type of cup. An extremely small amount of beer for $8 plus tax and tip. Customers should be made aware of what they are receiving... The kids meal was tiny an came in a plastic basket. I think it's time to get rid of the baskets. My good friend Kent suggested this place for our monthly eating meet up. This is brand spanking new as in two months old. The minute you walk in your notice the hip hop music playing, the ski ball in the corner and the phone hipster atmosphere. We came in early after work, therefore, it was just before it was getting busy. Comfort Food on a super rainy day which is appreciated. I got the basic burger on a gluten free bun which was amazing. I love the meat. I wanted to start basic before going in for the other burgers. The onion rings were a bit too greasy even for rings, fries were nicely cooked. Both came with super addicting dipping sauces that you completely forget that Ketchup even exists. The crown jewel of the evening and my new Instagram profile pic was the sundae. The sundae was their original custard, whisky caramel, roasted pecans, peach jam and ice tea crystals. It was the most adventurous fro you I have had. On paper the combination sounds a bit odd, however, the flavor combinations were very intriguing. Good topping to fro you ratio. Kent who isn't a fro you person loved this. went with the gang after work and decided to try this new place on fraser st. place looks modern with a twist of the old. promptly seated but server seems stand-off-ish! came over and laid down the menu and then came back in 2 mins...asked my friend what he wanted to drink first. when my friend said "im still thinking" the server said: "well, it doesnt help if you are looking at the wall instead of the menu!" what the f???! who says that! so shocking! what i was happy with is the extensive beer menu featuring a lot of local bc brews... ordered a lager and fish tacos for myself. for appys, we tried popcorn shrimp and fries and chicken wings to share and onion rings... the fries were good. nice crispy texture but soft center. came with its own mayo dip which was a good touch. the wings ( we chose s/p ) were great in a sense that each piece was the full wing. nice breading with a good crrrrrrrunch! however, the salt and pepper flavour fell short. they shouldve used coarse salt and whole peppercorns to further accentuate the flavour. onion rings were perfectly round, breaded nicely , and kept their form even when cooled down. the fish tacos were mediocre. good salsa topping but the fish was overpowered by the breading. fish did nit taste fresh but frozen. breading was too thick so you can barely taste the fish. the best dish i tasted was the shrimp popcorn. the shrimps tasted fresh and were juicy. they werent the store bought kind. you can actually taste the shrimp full on. breading wasnt too thick. done just right! will go back to try the burgers and other stuff! cheers! happy eating! read more

In today's terminology, "Bells and Whistles" usually refers to something that has a number of additional attractive (not necessarily useful) features. Nobody really knows the true origin of the phrase, but some believe that it harks back to a time long ago when bells and whistles were used to draw attention to something (such as at fairgrounds). In any case, the Bells and Whistles that I'm referring to today is the newish gastropub offering from Gooseneck Hospitality (the same group that brought us Wildebeest, Lucky Taco, and Bufala). I'm not much of a drinker but that's not the real reason why I visited. No... I heard that there was a super breakfast sandwich here that's available all day and, if you've been reading this blog long enough, you probably know how I feel about breakfast. When I arrived to Bells and Whistles, I was surprised at how large, bright, and airy this place was. The bar area, located on the right when you first walk inside, is separated from a more casual dining area to the left. Both sides have large projection tvs on the wall and there's plenty of natural light that comes in from the large windows. If you peer further past the dining area, you can see a separate section which houses a couple of carnival arcade games. I ordered the All Day Breakfast ($15.50) which includes a maple sausage pork patty, american cheese, hash browns, a fried egg, and their own special sauce. I also upgraded from fries to onion rings ($2) and paired it with Dickie's Ginger Beer ($4). The reason why I wanted to try this is because it reminded me of Triple O's Breakfast Club and my own Super Terrific Happy Big Breakfast McMuffin creation. This breakfast sandwich is not for the faint of heart... it's fairly large and quite filling. The maple sausage patty is juicy and complements the crispiness of the hash browns. And that egg with the drippy yolk? Dang! I was actually surprised that their bun, while not overly thick, held up well to the juicy contents. The onion rings were well formed and reminded me of old school onion rings (not like the processed onion-like rings you get at Burger King). The battered rings were pretty good and were served with a honey mustard dipping sauce. Personally, I prefer breaded onion rings but I'm not complaining here. Service was friendly and this seemed like a fun and vibrant place with plenty of food options that you wouldn't expect to find at a typical pub. As expected, it can get a bit loud in here from the din of patrons. We returned a couple of weeks later to try some of their other menu items and arrived around the brunch-hour. Unfortunately, it was busy during this visit so we had to wait about 45 minutes for our meals (the waiter did tell us in advance about the delay but we decided to stay anyways since most brunch places would have been busy too). The Chicken and Waffles ($16) is on their brunch menu and comes with crispy buttermilk fried chicken and oat waffles that are drizzled with chili yogurt and maple syrup. I'm not sure if it was because the food was good or because I was so hungry... but I wound up scarfing this down really quick. The Chili ($10) is a fairly small bowl but chock full of chunky beef brisket, chuck, and short rib, roasted corn, black beans, and bacon. It's topped off with cilantro crema and green onions and turned out to be a fairly tasty and thick version of chili (but lacked a spicy kick). This great new addition to Mount Pleasant is brought to you by the owners of Wildebeest. The restaurant is really well laid out with a nice clean decor, complete with great furnishings. There are two large TVs, one on each side of the restaurant. We were there for a World Cup match and the atmosphere was electric, and the TVs are in the right spot. I really like that there aren't 75 TVs covering every wall. Beer selection is awesome, great range and selection from local to Ontario, and a few European ones. Food hit the mark for most of my group who had brunch items. I chose the El Supremo salad, and while it was hearty and filling with a variety of ingredients, it was unfortunate over dressed. Got the Hot Rush ($17.50) with a veggie patty. I loooooved the grilled Anaheim chillies. Veggie patty was just okay, the cabbage/slaw was fresh and went well with the jalapeño jack and sriracha lime aioli. I liked their beer selection, but they didn't have a lot of the ones listed on the wall. Really good service. read more

Awesome atmosphere! Everyone welcome (very kid friendly). They place hosts local and not easy accessible beers! The food is hands down incredible (as well as 4 wines and 2 ciders). I got basic fries with BBQ mustard sauce (home made, duh) and it was legit the shit! The edamame was solid and miso-licious and the nachos, served on cafeteria style trays, were huge and amazing! Really conflicted on this spot. Pros -Good vibe and volume (not as loud as lots of other similar bars). Games section near the bathrooms. -Great fries and onion rings -Beers we had were good Cons -We thought this was a beer place but most of the taps were empty! There is a (confusing) list on the wall and the bar had run out of most of them. It turns out there were also other beers available on a different menu but the server didn't share that information until later - we found another list of beer on one of the many menus on the table (I think there were 4 or 5) and had to ask if those ones were available. Ordering a beer that was actually available felt super challenging! -Service - our server was not helpful with providing info and nor was she very warm or friendly. After seeing so many positive reviews and delicious pictures I had to try this place out. I went on a moderately brisk Saturday afternoon by myself. I sat on one of the commune table and was instantly greeted by a heavily beared fellow. First thing I noticed was how much space there was between my bench and the table. I'm not a big person and I can see how this would be super comfortabe for your average size guy. The vibe in this place was happy and lively. There were a few young parents with newborns and babies. The bearded guy promptly offered me water in a Brassneck beer bottle. I ordered the regular burger with fries and ordered a side of onion rings. While waiting there is a big screen TV showing sports and a play room where for a few coins you can toss a basketball like the PNE. The food came in a timely manner and so did the attentive server. My burger was surprisingly a little pink in the middle which suggests they make their own patties. It was good along with the fries and rings. They have several different dips to choose from. I had the garlic rosemary dip for the fries and a honey mustard poppyseed for the rings. . i'm not a beer drinker but I can tell they have quite a good list of local craft beers to please everyone.
