I came in here to get a quick snack on a hot day. I came with a couple of friends and it was nice because the store wasn't packed. But watch out because this location is small there's seats but inside is really not that big. I had a buy one get one free coupon and the people there used it easy for me so that was a breeze. I got the little sugar cone with 2 scoops. One scoop of Americone Dream and one scoop of Strawberry Cheesecake. Both were amazing. Americone Dream is actually my favorite. Had a very confusing experience here this pm: I asked for a small cup of ice cream with two toppings, and after forgetting my friend's order, the girl that helped us first asked to put both of our ice creams, after scooping them, into larger containers and then put mine into a Sundae bowl, for the extra room. Having worked at an ice cream shop before, I though this seemed weird. Before charging me, she asked if I wanted another topping with my ice cream because it came free with the others, which didn't make much sense, unless I had ordered a sundae, which I didn't. I can't really blame this on her, because I can't now remember how much extra toppings are, but the price I was charged was more than two dollars over what it should have been for a small - making it around a dollar per topping. If she charged me for a sundae to save me money, which is maybe a possibility, she probably should have explained that to me beforehand, instead of leaving me blinking the fluorescent light specks out of my eyes on the dark sidewalk outside, wondering what had just happened to me and trying to finish a mountain of ice cream that in truth was anything but small. read more

Fun environment in this place, and your typical ben & jerry's ice cream. They also have this gigantic ice cream (i think it's like 40-scoops) called the Vermonster, if you and your friends feel daring. I don't feel like there's a huge selection of flavors, though. You might have a better chance at finding a flavor (esp frozen yogurt) if you just go to the freezer section in the grocery store. Yes, the prices are similar to the other ice-creamed related establishments along Newbury. But Ben and Jerry's is Ben and Jerry's: you know what you're getting, and it's good. It's a standard good too. On top of that, this place has a decent variety of low-fat smoothies, including the Doug Flutie one where getting it donates to autism research. So you're getting a good smoothie and giving to a good cause at the same time. I'm a fan. read more

My favorite flavor was the brownie cheesecake and the Gilly's chocolate catastrophe. if you're a student, you can get those college coupon books from your school (usually around september, but they'll have lots of left overs for months to come, just ask for them, I know for a fact NEU, Berklee and MassArt has them). The three stars are really for the quality of the ice cream and not for the location. I expect that any great place is going to have lines, but this location isn't conducive to the sheer number of people that come in and out of this place on a mild day. After being stuck on the stairs for a while, feeling like I'm going to pass out because there's just zero airflow in the place until you get down to the main level and then freezing cold air is blowing out of the strangest places since there aren't any vents to be seen. Anyway, the counter looked dirty, as did the floor and tables in the seating area. If you order anything other than ice cream (i.e. sorbet or froyo) expect to wait a bit since they don't keep it up front. That also means that strangers are going to have to get incredibly intimate as they squeeze by you to pay for their items since there's no sense of how long you might have to wait to get your item. read more

Yeah, I love B&J's so this would be a full 4 stars, but I went there today and now I have to deduct a half. Now it's 3.5. I go in and get my ice cream and decided to get a dish instead of a cone. Usually go with a sugar cone, but not today. Didn't want the maintenance factor. The problem was with the spoon. First of all, there's about three hundred of em stuffed into a little bucket, pointing everywhere. Wow, festive. When I pick one out and start eating my ice cream, the thing was a flimsy shame of a utensil. I couldn't even spoon the ice cream without it bending and folding like a cheap suit. I think it's a good little place with really great ice cream. The customer service is also great. My friends and I went here when it was already closing yet the employees still accommodated us with smiles on their faces. I decided to get a waffle cone (1.50) with one scoop of cherry Garcia (4.21), and I thought it was more than enough. The ice cream was really good and very creamy! I know it seems odd but two wonderful folks from the Newbury St. store came out to a church hall in Winchester to CATER MOM'S FUNERAL LUNCHEON. They may have been a little weirded out at first but they covered it! They were on time, neat, super friendly and respectful. Can I just say that having ice cream cones at what is frequently a sad event is fabulous! Everyone smiled (cause ice cream was Mom's favorite) and, because we had cones, folks walked around the room and chatted with each other. Today was "free cone" day! Hurray! Despite the nasty wind and rain, I was determined to get my free cone; and apparently so was everyone else in the area judging by the lines which had formed outside their cramped basement shop on pricey Newbury street. They even had a live band in there playing up a ruckus and to generate "excitement". Nonetheless, I got out of there in under 100 seconds thanks to the ultra efficient staff and kudos to the super speedy scoopers (who were undoubtedly under a huge amount of pressure). I got my very generous "Cherry Garcia" cone (with about 2 scoops in there) and went merrily on my way. My ice-cream cone was great! The waffle cone which the frozen dairy rested upon was fresh and crispy with a warm sugary redolence. B&J even set up a temporary "tent" for shelter outside to keep the ice-cream fiends from getting the worst of the weather; as they huddled together, licking in unison. read more

I agree that it's more expensive by the cone than the pint. Also, the lighting could be a bit brighter, considering it's somewhat underground. I'm not a fan of the decor there, the high chairs are too clunky and the colors are wacky. I know it's B&J's but it's too much. The whimsical statues of B&J in the store window are great, but they should somewhat face the customers in the inside too, instead of having their backs against us. read more

Ben & Jerry's rich, creamy ice cream is a nice treat. During my most recent visit, I got a small Milk & Cookies in a sugar cone. Milk & Cookies tasted similar to Cookies & Cream, but with chocolate chip cookie bits too. The small size is HUGE- my sugar cone had three whopping scoops of ice cream that I had to lick fast to prevent dripping. It was about $6, which was reasonable for the size. Next time I'll probably get the kiddie size or get my ice cream in a waffle cone to prevent dripping. read more

Officially in love with this place. I'd been to this location before, but a few weeks ago was free cone day and well, they won me over and pretty much made my week. We first called just to make sure it was actually happening, and the guy who answered the phone sounded like he was having one of the best days of his life, which made me start smiling like crazy for the next hour. And once we finally made it through the line, all I had to do was say what flavor I wanted and next thing I know the guy's coming back with the biggest ice cream I think I've ever had. No charge. Got Sweet cream, and was very satisfied with a large serving. Ben and Jerrys is kind of on the expensive end, but you expect that with the quality you're getting. Store is also very nice with nice employees, and even has a piano that you can play. read more

i don't really feel like it's that important to review ben and jerry's for the sake of reviewing ben and jerry's. you can pick up a pint at your grocery store or gas station as easy as you can get it scooped for you, but here's what i loved about THIS particular ben and jerry's: today was free cone day, and one of my best friends has celiac's, so we've gotta be careful of the gluten. i knew that some flavors of b&j's were gluten free, but because their products change a fair amount, they don't ever publish which of their products are or aren't gluten free. so, on a day that's bound to be pretty busy, i called the newbury location and asked which of their flavors were gluten free. the girl on the phone was SO helpful and so positive on the phone - it was the epitome of what telephone customer service should be. at the store itself, things were a little more chaotic, but it IS free cone day, after all. bottom line? delicious ice cream (try the new maple one with blondie brownie - YUM)!, good customer service, and we'll both be back fo sho. read more

Love this location for the flagship brand of Ben & Jerry's ice cream. There are a ton of different flavors that you can enjoy. They give you free flavor tastings too if you ask. There's a lot of seating outside which is great. Definitely stop by and grab a scoop of ice cream, rain or shine. read more

Really good ice cream here. I love the flavors and they make the best shakes! They are really original and you can't get them anywhere else! Last time I was there I got a 2 scoop cup of cookie dough and chocolate brownie ice cream. The only complaint I have is that for two scoops, it was 5 dollars! That seemed really high to me because you can get a pint of their ice cream for that price at the grocery store or a bigger sundae at ColdStone's. read more

Fast and efficient service on Free Cone Day! I wandered down Newbury Street mid-afternoon to partake in the aforementioned joyous occasion, only to encounter a line that was out the door and down the sidewalk. I almost told myself "forget it!" but decided to stand in line anyway. I'm glad I did, because it went fast. And I mean FAST! They were fully staffed and more than ready to handle the crowds. When I got my cone, the ice cream was a little softer than it should be, but I suppose that's not surprising since the freezer was probably open the entire day. Oh well. On the up side, my free cone reminded me just how much I do love Ben & Jerry's ice cream, and I'm sure I'll be back another day. read more

Yummy... I found about the Boston institution, JP Licks about a minute and a half after I bought some Imagine Whirled Peace, but hey, just another excuse to make my way back over to the bay. The friendliness of the counter people really won me over. As for the ice cream, it's more expensive for a cup or cone here than the pint at Shaws because there is less air in the scoop shop ice cream. You can taste the difference in texture. I was in a long line for a mere 20 minutes (or less) and my order was quickly and generously served.
