This place used to be right off Central Ave in Charlotte and because the area was getting really bad they moved near Sam's Club in Matthews 2 years ago. A-freaking-mazing flavor in my special menu selection chicken with pecan in a pineapple. OMG a party in my mouth. The summer rolls we delicious and the fresh mint made me holla. My husband had shrimp curry with rice and I tell you, those vietnamese sweet potatoes had me wanting to rub them all over my face because they were so frigging good. We'll be back. My parents and I have been coming here for as long as I can remember. Ben Thanh used to be located on Central Ave, much closer to us, but we still make the trek to Windsor Square whenever we can to stay loyal to the incredible owners. They are some of the nicest people I've EVER met and their food is phenomenal. I recommend #40, a vermicelli bowl that comes with charbroiled pork, skewered shrimp, lettuce, cucumber, mint, bean sprouts, and sweet.sour sauce. For an appetizer the three of us usually split an order of the #5 Chim Cut (crispy quail). I always feel guilty eating it because quails are so cute but they honestly taste even better than they are cute. It's perfectly crisp, comes out piping hot, and is excellent with the pepper and salt with lime mixed in. Try their orange juice too! It's fresh squeeze and SO good. I recently moved to New York and think about Ben Thanh once a day, if not more. As soon as I visit home I'm getting straight in my car and driving here. read more

I am vegan and also highly sensitive to MSG. There were many options to choose from that were meatless and non-dairy and I asked specifically if they used MSG. The waiter said, "We can" and I said,"No no MSG." The food was delicious but within minutes of finishing, I was having an allergic reaction to the MSG. I tried bun bo hue and hu tieu kho here. Their hu tieu kho is decent. Their bun bo hue tastes nothing like bun bo hue. It doesn't taste bad. Wowwwe I got #37 without the fish ball and WOW. SO GOOD. Personally, every time I come to Charolette it's very hard for me to find quality ethnic food. This place is definitely someone's grandmothers recipes. The summer rolls were amazing as well, very fresh and not that crunchy stale feel (happens often with summer rolls). Best Pho I have had in the Charlotte area since moving here 2 years ago! We will be back!

We are Pho ph-anatics and self named experts, so of course we had to come try their Pho when we got recommended by a friend. I got the Pho Dac Biet and all in all it was pretty good. I would give their Pho a 4 star rating overall. The broth had a good taste, but for my preferences a little too sweet. The two issues I had with the pho was that it wasn't very hot, so much that when I added in my rare steak on the side into the soup, it barely cooked it even after 10 minutes. I love Pho for the fresh steaming hot bowl of goodness, so that was a little disappointing. Also the steak was not the thinnest cut compared to other Pho restaurants. (not even close to being as good as Doans) I like my steak to be really thin like they cut it at the asian stores, because when I ate the steak it was a little hard to chew through. The reason why I am giving this a 3 star is mainly because of a little mediocre service. Im not sure if this is because we went at 2pm, which i assume is right after their lunch rush, but our waiter only came to our table to take our order and never again, even after when we finished and my boyfriend had to actually get up and find him to place an order of jackfruit smoothie. I also tried to flag down another female waitress from across the room to ask for hot chili oil, but when she saw me she kind of just ignored me. We aren't picky people, so I just got up and got the chili oil from a table myself. I would possible come try Ben Thanh again, maybe they had an off day. But even judging off just the Pho alone I can name a a couple places who's Pho I prefer more. Our absolute favorite being Doans on South Boulevard. read more

I have been going to this restaurant for over 15 years. First when it was on Central Avenue and now that it is in Windsor Square. It is hands down the best Vietnamese in Charlotte. I've been coming to this authentic Vietnamese restaurant for years. Everything is the way it should be, from the fried rolls to the pho. My sister gets the curry, and I get either pho bo kho (Vietnamese beef stew.. Not on the menu but it's the only place in town that does it right!), or a noodle entree. Just visited the new Matthews location for the first time. I really like it. The chandelier when you walk in is gorgeous! I kind of preferred the old locations vibe better but eh, what can I say. I like moderately lit places (it's brighter at the new one). Keep up the great work guys! I'll follow this place around no matter where their location takes them, haha! read more

I went her for the first time with my brother and grandmother. I've been wanting my brother to try pho, and he finally said yes! So we got the #24 pho dac biet, and it was huge!!!! My grandmother got the wonton soup and two spring rolls. She was very pleased. My brother liked the pho too! They gave us a lot of bean sprouts (my favorite) and the only thing I wish they had was lime for the pho instead of lemon. The only negative thing about the restaurant, was the smell. It smelled like old mop water but it wasn't horrible. It was honestly the best pho I've had. I will defiantly be back with my family. I can't wait for my leftover pho tomorrow! Excellent food and service. On our way to Charlotte we found this restaurant on yelp and I'm so glad we did. My girlfriend had a dish that was served with two pork egg rolls. Usually she's quick with offering a taste but this time she was silent. As I reached to grab the last bite of her first one her expression said it all. A pout I've never seen before made me feel guilty for taking it. I had a vegetable/shrimp roll wrapped in rice paper with a side of peanut sauce . . . very good. Our vermicelli dishes were wonderful accompanied with a sweet and sour sauce that complimented the dish not overpowering it. Pretty good! One of the only Vietnamese restaurants in the Matthews area. Came here and ordered the fried quail, pho dac biet (combination pho), and the combination vermicelli. It wasn't my favorite pho in Charlotte considering the broth was a bit oily and not as flavorful as the places on Central. The combination vermicelli was very good though - probably the best in the city. Will be returning here for the convenience of the location! read more

The food was great. I love it but I'm giving it a two because customer service sucks. The waitress was rushing us to order our food. Didn't even asked us what we wanted to drink. She just came with water in her hands. We were not even done eating and she brings the check and hand it to my husband. Not even 5 minutes later she comes and pick up the check and insisted my husband to give her money to pay for our food. Mind you we're not even done eating and she was wanting us to pay already. The owner was walking around but didn't even say hi or smile or nothing. I don't feel so welcome here so I won't be back. Certain people don't understand that you run a business here so therefore customer service should be your first priority. You should always make ur customers feel welcome just like how you would make your guest at home feel welcome. read more

My friend, Deanna, and I headed out today for Vietnamese food. We were in Matthews and needed a place close by. Had been hearing about this restaurant and wanted to give it a try. Deanna had never had Vietnamese food, so this was an adventure for her. I talked her into having the PHO. As a first time experience, how could she not have Pho? It was NOT my first experience with Vietnamese, but the cold rainy day just insisted on PHO for me too. They offered it in beef, pork, or veggie broth. We both chose the veggie broth with chicken added. It was plenty of food and it was tasty. Next time I look forward to trying their lemongrass chicken. Their menu was expansive and I found a few things that made me salivate! The atmosphere was a throwback to the sixties or seventies, and I loved it. The adequate booth space and roomy dining area were a nice change from the ordinary. The very quiet space was conducive to both conversation and digestion! Service was spot on. Arguably the best pho. The broth is full of flavor. I don't care for a broth that's got too much of an anise flavor, so their broth is just about perfect for me. We have been going here for years. Expensive for what you get. I've tried to give this place many chances but all three times I've been, none of the food have met my expectations. The broth here is not one that I enjoy. I think it's your preference on whether you like a savory broth or a sweeter broth. This is a sweet broth, and the cinnamon hits you in the face. If you like that, then I guess it's fine. The service is okay. I guess everything is more expensive here because they keep up with the seating area. I feel like here, they're trying to create an ambience as well...which you're paying for.
