I tried bengong for the first time in the SGV, and it remains one of my favorite boba chains. I was thrilled when this one opened at UTC mall. The gorgeous Chinese design elements, the wishing tree, and of course the drinks, all combine to give bengong its popularity. I think its cool that they sell press-on nails sometimes too. The drinks I've had at this branch have been a bit more hit and miss, but the flavors are delicate and delicious overall. Their creme brûlée tea comes in an oddly small cup, but is intensely rich and sweet, yet easy to drink down. It is not cloying so it goes down quite quickly. I've also tried the osmanthus rice milk tea, which tastes very unique due to the fermented rice (related to Chinese rice wine, jiu niang, I believe), and there are real osmanthus flowers you can suck up through your straw. Overall it is a tad bland as I feel like the rice wine-like flavor overpowers both the osmanthus and the milk tea base. I think BenGong is still a solid option in UTC, but now that Convoy's leveled up their boba game, I don't find myself craving BenGong as often. Some day, I'll speak up to ask what goes into the amber milk slush, or just order it myself to try. For now it remains a mystery to me. read more
