We had a reservation for 6 oclock and didn't get sat down until 7:15 and not served until 7:30. The entire waiting room and entrance was packed with people waiting past when there reservations were booked. We had the pleasure of celebrating our friends' birthday at Benihana. All told there were eight in our party. After spot-checking a few reviews I think there are some aspects of eating at a hibachi restaraunt some diners overlook, ignore, or are simply unaware of. For example... 1) The cooking is done at your table so you should expect your clothes to absorb some of the wonderful odors coming off the grill. Yes - all the way home. In my opinion, It's only a bad thing if you don't like the food. 2) it is by design if not necessity that you will be sitting with strangers if your party is small as the grills incorporate eight or more seats. 3) If you're looking for an intimate, quiet and/or romantic atmosphere you should look elsewhere because it's loud, busy, and again - you may find yourself sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers. 4) The food is on the expensive side as you are paying for entertainment as well. Now as to our experience. We had a 6:45 reservation and experienced a short delay of perhaps 10 minutes only because we were waiting for everyone in our party to arrive. That said, we were seated quickly and addressed by our host immediately. Our waiter took drink orders shortly thereafter and our food selections soon after. Our hibachi chef - Brady - came out, introduced himself and quickly went to work. He was quite funny and candid throughout our meal. We found him personable and talented at keeping the conversation going while prepping, cooking and serving our food. The table service was very attentive, professional, and helpful. Sadly, I did not capture our server's name but she was wonderful. The food was delish and between all of us included shrimp, prawns, yakisoba, chicken, tofu, filet mignon, fried rice and probably a couple things I'm forgetting. Oh - dinner salads and onion soup both of which were very good. We liked the sauces Brady whipped up as well. Since the birthday boy brought his own ice cream cake we all passed on the house desert included with our meals (ice cream and sherbet). Benihana's is not a place I'd likely go for non-celebratory events. It just has that kind of vibe and if you're in the mood, that's a really good thing. We were seated with another party because our family of 5 didn't fill a full seating area around a grill. The real kicker of this experience -- the cook who was tossing the knives, etc...... dropped a knife that had been flying the air. This is such a poorly run location. They always take more reservations than they can handle, and never apologize for anything because they're virtually the only show in town and can do whatever they want. Never bring out veggies for kids' meals. Bunch of older female waitresses who just can't handle the job of serving. Had a lunch reso today and was seated 30 mins after our reso (we arrived on time). Had to flag down a waiter after 15 mins. During COVID, I ordered pick-up and was charged twice. Store supervisor called me after I emailed them, said she would send me a giftcard (my order was messed up anyways, the crispy rice sushi was missing ingredients) and reverse the double charge. She did neither! Had to dispute the charge. Never got a gift card. Never had anyone follow up. And this was escalated to management! I've loved Benihana for decades. Today I popped in to enjoy a late lunch + glass of wine. I seated myself at the bar, and the bartender completely ignored me, although it was almost empty. And proceeded to sit there, another party of 3 on one side of us and a party of 2 on the other side. We had a 9 year old with us who was starving. When we ordered, we ordered him a sushi roll with the hope he could get something in his belly. And we proceeded to wait. And wait. And wait. I have an allergy to onions and waitress said she would bring miso soup instead of onion soup and then didn't. I got the same onion soup as the rest of the group. When she came back w salads she brought the salad w the onion dressing that she said she would leave off. At 8:40 we asked a waitress on one of her rare trips to our table why we didn't at least have the roll. At nearly 9pm the roll finally came. And at 9:10 (nearly two hours after our reservation time) a cook finally came to our table. And the first thing out of his mouth was "sorry about the slow service, you know how bad traffic can be on 215". At this point we got up and left. I'm not about to pay $60 per person to have staff be rude and joke about it. The party of two next to us decided to leave as well. And the waitress decided to try and charge them for the soup and salad she had brought while they waited 2 hours. Do better Benihana. Pathetic customer service from the manager, Mickey. Came here for my son's college graduation. We had a large party (14) reservation booked in advance and verbally confirmed over the phone the day before. When we arrive we are told they are an hour behind but they planned to seat us at a table that was finishing up so that we could sit together. 40 minutes later we noticed that another party was seated in the table allegedly designated for our party. When I asked Mickey what happened to us being seated he told me, first he didn't know what happen, second he said that we were bumped from the table "by another manager" and that we would have to wait for another table. No timeframe was given and he was unbothered that we were at that point an hour past our reservation time. He then said he could sit half the party now but didn't know when the rest could be seated. Granted, my expectations were based on a long ago visit, but the food was poorly prepared (soggy soft shell crab, hacked up pieces of fish) and not especially tasty. Prices were high to boot! I feel like its hit or miss when coming here. I usually come here once a year for birthdays. One thing to remember is that if you are hungry, it might be a good idea to sit on the sushi side or order some while waiting for the main course. I say this because we had reservations at 8 PM and was able to be seated at that time (which was pretty good), but our table chef did not come out to cook until 8:49pm. We did get a little soup and salad around 8:35pm. Once the chef was at the table, he started cooking and we got some food at 9pm. The food itself was decent, but people come also come for the showmanship of food being prepared. I had the Emperor's Feast, which came with filet mignon and chicken breast. This is a fun experience. You have a full menu and also 5/6 course meals. Appetizers, soup and salad, main, and dessert. They cook it all in front of you which is super cool and a fun time. The chefs put on a little show with their skills and make it a good time. I do think it's quiet spendy, but for special occasions it's nice. I usually get the steak and scallops but this last time I got steak and lobster. I'm always so impressed with how perfect they cook their steak! Seriously 100% perfectly cooked. It's amazing! And they cut it up into bite sizes for you which is nice so you can stay fancy. Seafood tastes fresh and I think is good quality but I'm not too familiar with seafood quality. I had the lunch boat, which I believe was $14 and came, with miso soup, salad, sashimi, California roll, grilled Salmon, rice and fruit. All were delicious. I think the miso soup was one of the best I have ever had as they put fried onions in it. Not traditional but nice touch. The entire staff spewed hospitality. We sat on the deck, and there was no more umbrellas, multiple staff members assisted moving our table so we could get as much shade as possible. Everyone that walked by our table was always smiling and seemed that they genuinely enjoyed their job. Amy, our chef, has worked there 5+ years and cooked every dish to perfection. When I go to eat here I expect a certain level of satisfaction with my experience and food. I'm pretty patient with a slip up here and there, but in the past several times I've ordered door dash from here the meals have been blatantly incorrectly prepared. The first time I ordered hibatchi steak I ordered it medium rare and received well done, and the second time I ordered it rare I once again received well done. In addition, the second time I ordered chicken fried rice and the fried rice came without chicken and on the first order the salad was missing the dressing. Once seated, water and ordering took a while. The we had to wait extra time for chef to come to table. All food was good and portions were good size and quality was good. One miss was that the menu said our meals came with green tea. Since we actually like green tea we were disappointed towards the end of the meal to be told that, due to a shortage of tea cups, it was not OFFERED but only given only given ON REQUEST. Would never recommend. If I could give zero stars I would. Food was awful, I barely ate any of it. The food was way over seasoned and started to instantly give me stomach cramps. Shane was an awesome server yesterday! The food was top tier and he put on a GREAT show for us.

I came here for lunch and dinner after not coming for so long. I missed the food, but not so much being stinky afterwards lol. The 6 course meal includes onion soup, salad with yummy ginger dressing, Hibachi shrimp appetizer, Hibachi vegetables (I think this was mushrooms,onion, zucchini), steamed white vegetables or fried rice. Fried rice is an additional $4.50. These are the first courses all meals get. So I am not a fan of the Hibachi chicken. I honestly think their chicken is among the worst chicken I ever had, dry, not much flavor, and I gave it 2-3 chances. I have had a couple of the steaks; the Hibachi Chateaubriand beef and the Teriyaki beef. They were just OK. What they are really good at here is the seafood. I can't get enough of the SURF SIDE! Grilled colossal shrimp, calamari and tender sea scallops. If you haven't had calamari that wasn't fried, you must try it. It is so amazing in flavor when it's just the meat and not the fried battered greasy stuff. THE SPICY SEAFOOD YAKISOBA was also delicious. You have to tell the chef if you don't want it spicy though. It contained the same seafood in the SURF SIDE, but a little less of it with more noodles and additional veggies. Many dishes can be made gluten free, you need to let the chef know. I assume he uses GF soy sauce then. Most dishes themselves are gf anyway, other than their noodles. The staff is always nice and the chefs are entertaining :) The Hibachi tuna steak is the highest on my list to try next, as well as the lobster tail. Secondary to that would be the sushi and filet mignon. But these are not foods you eat everyday so it may be a while. I can't give them 5 stars because it's a huge pet peeve of mine when prices are not disclosed online, and the whole yucky chicken situation lol. read more

Great hibachi place! I really enjoyed getting a table to ourselves for date night. I imagine that is extremely rare and I was quite grateful. The food was prepared well. I have been a few times and it is generally good. There have been a few awkward experiences and jokes with the grill master and I've definitely had better hibachi around portland. Not sure that I'll go back again since it's quite expensive and there are better options but still not a bad place if youre in the area read more
