If you're coming to Benihana, you're coming for the show. A chef will slice and dice your food right in front of you, spinning spatulas and doing all kinds of crazy tricks with your food on a flat-top grill. To children, this is amazing. And if you have kids (maybe ages 6-10), Benihana is a worthwhile visit. For adults, the show is nice, but the food is the real focus... and I'm sad to say it's just mediocre. Everything you eat is drowned in butter and grilled. There's nothing wrong with that. But you won't really walk away talking about how great the food is. It's just fine. I liked Benihana. I may come back someday. But when I do, it will be more for the show than the meal. read more

Tip: Sign up for the birthday coupon!! I really only come here once a year when I have the coupon. They are very generous and give you $30! I will say on this last visit the tables felt very cramped. People were seated at the table behind us and kept bumping into us. I will say that for portion/value, you get a lot of food. My go-to is Rocky's choice, which comes with chicken and steak. This is also served with salad, soup, rice, and a scoop of ice cream. Cocktails are reasonably priced as well. They have flavored teas as well as soft drinks, too. read more

Greetings my Foodzies, to we took my son to Benihana in Lombard for his birthday. We were disappointed; we haven't been there in a while and we found that they changed the ginger salad dressing, it was very heavy with ginger which gave it a very bitter flavor. Then the changed the dipping sauce; not the ginger sauce but the yum yum sauce. It's now a watery flavorless sauce. Portions hot smaller. We were very disappointed to say the least. read more

So bummed about how bad this place has gotten. The prices are crazy expensive. Hibachi shrimp used to be 26.00 now it's 41.00. The chef didn't cook the shrimp all the way. The appetizer of shrimp came at the end of the meal no waitress came back after the rice came. It has been like this the last three times. Food isn't like it used to be. It was 259 for 4 people. Side of corn was 4.50. We've been coming for 20 years and will not be back if they don't change management and prices. Sad to leave this review but it is what it is. They make you wait so long for a simple table. They take forever to take your order and don't give you any seats to sit while waiting.

Poorly managed restaurant. I made a reservation for 10 people, one entire table, 2 weeks in advance for last night. My party started to arrive shortly after I get a text stating my table is ready. We check in with the grade school aged girls acting as hostesses and the tell us that once the entire party arrives, we will be seated. This is 7:25, reservation was for 7:30. Everyone arrives and we are given a pager. Obviously our table was not ready. We stood in the bar area for 25-30 minutes and finally ask when our table is ready. We are told that they are just seating the 7:00 reservations and "they can't do nothing" about it. A conversation with the manager was just as productive with him telling us they can't put time limits on tables. Pretty ridiculous, it's a hibachi restaurant. Ended up leaving and ordering Chinese for the group from a small mom and pop place in Downers Grove. Worked out much better. Definitely won't go back here. Very disappointing. read more

Great place to celebrate a birthday especially if you sign up for their birthday club. Haven't been to the Lombard location in awhile but it was still spectacular. Service is always ahhhh-mazing! The place is always packed and has a great vibe! The food and DRINKS are absolutely delicious and worth it to try to me but to each their own. Also maybe some people may not like dining with strangers but it can be fun or in my experience, this time, I had the honor of eating with a sweet family who's little girl insisted on singing happy birthday to me! Loved this place. Went here for a company holiday dinner and it was perfect. We had two tables and we were able to see everyone and mingle and talk. The show was amazing. Such a disappointment to see how this West suburban restaurant has are devolved in terms of service and hospitality. Table turn is clearly the number one priority since after our group had been sitting there for one hour and 12 minutes the server came and started taking away peoples plates that still had food on them and at one hour 16 minutes while people were still eating, they came and brought over the stack of plates for the next group. Perhaps that is a useful psychological signal to get an entire table of eight to get up and leave by the hour and a half mark, but I also wondered about its cleanliness since that meant that they were simultaneously cleaning old place settings up while the new plates were sitting stacked there?! We weren't even offered dessert after spending over $900 for the group we had brought... plus, we chose a very early seating on purpose to help ensure we would all be out within an hour and a half to two hours but... Thanks to the restaurant hustling everything along, we were out that door by one hour and 27 minutes after our scheduled reservation, which we were not even seated for until a couple minutes after. Wondering if they were overbooked as we walked out through crowds of not very happy looking people waiting not just in the bar area, but in front of the restrooms and out the door?? Our family has been going to this and the downtown location for over four decades for family events and celebrations, and it certainly has been feeling more and more like an assembly line over the years, but this was bordering on the ridiculous. In spite of the strange hurried service, we still tipped 20% as we felt the servers were being hassled by Manager to do what they were doing, and we very much appreciated. the chef and felt the food was still OK if not as fabulous as in the past. Ironically, if this was done in a more Japanese hospitality way, it could actually feel authentic with the noise and the plates and everything moving fast to get people out it's just not done very well or very respectfully At least two of our group said they don't wanna go back there again. Went here for my husbands birthday per his suggestion. Service was great from the waitresses to the hibachi chef fun experience and entertaining. The restaurant was nice and clean definitely hibachi style restaurant. Now the hostess first sat us next to a family of 5 .. 3 kids small kids ... not sure why they would do that. I asked if we can be seated somewhere else and the hostess obliged but i'm not understanding why that wouldn't have been their first thought. We order sake flight ... no real taste to it but definitely felt buzz from that as well as their version of long island Ice tea I had. I order the hibachi steak with chicken fried rice. now they used one chicken breast to feed a table of 6 crazy it should have been at least 2 to 3. The chicken was cut super small. The fried rice was not as flavorful as i expected watching the chef put all this seasoning on it. The steak and mushrooms were good, had a lot of flavor and was tender.. i was upset he gave some of my mushrooms away to other people because he thought he gave me enough. you can never have too much mushrooms. I usually love Benihana but tonight was awful. It was super crowded and unorganized. Despite the restaurant being packed, they left 2 seats empty at our table. I thought we got lucky to have more room to spread out. It turns out they were testing a new chef on us and didn't tell us this in advance. I complained about the food being burnt and the chef being really slow and they told me we had a new chef so he could get practice. I was so angry that they would do this on such a busy night and not tell us in advance so we could decide if we wanted to sit at this table. There were also 2 birthdays at the table. If you have empty seats at your table don't consider it a good thing. Be sure to ask if the chef is new before you end up with a new chef who moves slowly, overcooks everything, doesn't season anything, and messes up the normal hibachi presentation tricks. read more

It had been years since we had been here, but we had a truly fun and tasty time as our daughter gave this meal to her mom as a 70th Birthday party. As ever, our grandsons, 4 & 7, provided the laughs! Alphonso was our hibachi chef, performing admirably, although my sesame chicken was not terribly tender and should have been plated sooner. My wife's tuna was delicious and the taste of steak I had was quite tender and flavorful. Our older grandson, who was rather in awe of the flames and fun of the hibachi grill, opted for chicken tenders from the children's menu. They looked appetizing and he devoured them. The onion soup was quite good. I am not an onion fan, but they were plentiful in this meal and I actually surprised myself by enjoying some! The ginger salad was fine, but not too exciting, really. We were primed for a good time, my Japanese Kiriban beer and the ladies' wine likely helped too. Our younger grandson had shared his mother's description of dinner at Benihana with his preschool class and I would love to be a 'fly on the wall' when he recounts his experience to them today! So, it's a bit pricey, but you're partly paying for the showmanship. Our chef was good, although lacking some of the wild elan I recalled from chefs of years' ago. Benihana is a rare treat. I doubt we will be soon returning, but it was a fun and fulfilling meal experience and everyone in the establishment seemed to be having a great time, even the other smiling and attentive servers. We missed my son-in-law, who was out of town, but texted photos of his amazed kids to him and other family members and the 70 year old Birthday Girl laughed a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the event! Benihana is, by now, an American institution so I will cut to the chase regarding this location: it's a solid spot. (Also, I learned that it isn't "hibachi", it is "teppanyaki" cooking) This location covers all the bases very well: they have a friendly staff, they serve tasty food, and the service is satisfactory. We came in for lunch and were seated right away. At our table were a few other people but they spaced us out well (even in a non-COVID context). After quickly taking our drink and food orders the chef arrived after a small wait. He put on the usual show and cooked up some TASTY food. Honestly, I should come here more often because any Benihana always does a great job with the food. Throughout the meal the waitress did a satisfactory job of checking in on the table but there were times were we didn't see her that often - my one critique would be to increase the table rounds a bit. All said, we had an enjoyable lunch and it has brought Benihana back onto my radar. I'm looking forward to another visit sometime soon. read more

4:15 reservation turned into an hour and a half wait to be seated. When questioned, we were met with "we're busy". For those of us waiting, there was no place to sit. The bar area was crowded with customers waiting. We were beyond surprised to know that the "Regional Manager", Chris, was present and did absolutely NOTHING other than stand idle. General Manager, Sal Santana, was equally as useless. When I asked the hostess if I could speak with the Manager, he directed her to tell me "I already spoke with her!" Nice job, Sal! It gets better! The Manager, Amisha (sp?) rolled her eyes when directed by the other two to assist the front reception. The restrooms were absolutely deplorable! We go to this establishment for my wife's birthday every year and always enjoy it. This year we had Soto as our waiter and he was very good. Always had full glasses and plates were removed promptly but he didn't get in the way of the meal. Okky was our chef and was fantastic. Put on a good show which is normal but his amount of spices on the food was the best we've had in a long time. We always enjoy coming to this establishment and have good food but this time everything was just a little better than normal because of Soto and Okky. Well, it was day 3 of nationals and we all decided to go here for a dinner. The biggest issue was the reservation we made, they had us wait an hour after the reservation time we had. So poor planning on them. we plan all of our things way in advance and that kind've sucked. The service and food on the other hand. Those things were pretty solid. Absolutely great. Our server had some fun banter for the party. The chef was absolutely amazing at what we did. I never have had any issues with the food whenever i have been here. Overall, a good experience. Ohhh Benihana, how I wanted to enjoy thee... Last evening about 5:20pm, my daughter and I decided to deviate from Uncle Julio's across the street so we moseyed into Benihana. We walked right up to the hostess stand where two young hostesses were standing. The first thing one young lady asked was did we have a reservation. No formal or informal greeting or salutation whatsoever. So as I glanced around the nearly empty restaurant and thought back on the sparsely populated parking lot and asked her "do we need one?". She proceeded to say that ordinarily no, but that tonight they were full and the 5:30/5:45 reservations should start arriving soon. She then put her head down to continue showcasing the top of her head to my daughter and I, satisfied that she had dealt with us I guess. Bewildered and flummoxed, we leave and walk past numerous empty parking spaces(I always park away from the door) and when we got in the car, I just couldn't let it go. So I pulled up Yelp, looked up Benihana and wouldn't you know it - there was immediate availability for two diners which I booked. So I went back to the same counter I had been at just moments ago and showed the young lady my reservation and asked to be seated. With a slight 'tude, she sat us at a table with another father about my age who was taking his teen daughter and son that looked to be a primary-schooler like my daughter, to dinner. He was treating them while mama was out of town, he said. The chef soon came and we had our meal. If you are familiar with the hibachi experience you undoubtedly understand that with five people, our table wasn't even half full. We stayed there about an hour and the entire time I looked across the dining area and almost none of the tables were full. One was full but it appeared to be a family or work party as they all came in together. As for the food? Meh. It wasn't bland and the rice had a good flavor. But their yum-yum sauce was off. I'm not sure if there was too much ginger or what but I was like yum-yum, no-no! The spicy tuna roll was just ok. It was not very spicy and they also put cream cheese in it which is unusual for me. I ate the whole roll but I wouldn't order their sushi again. But that's not the worst of the experience, the worst was the outrageous prices at this place! As said, I have been to many hibachis and I do enjoy them. They can be a little pricey depending on what you get, but I am a simple man and I order the same thing at all of them so it's easy for me to compare pricing. When the waiter bought me the bill I was truly taken aback. My hibachi steak and shrimp was $40 alone and they charged an additional $6 for the fried rice as opposed to steamed. Folks, this was not a $50 plate of food and that isn't just the taste but the portion as well. Usually when i go to a hibachi dinner, I know what I am going to be eating for lunch the following day because they give you so much food. That was certainly not the case here. My daughter got the kids chicken hibachi($16.60) and again they added $6 for the fried rice. Insane. To be fair, the portion size appeared about the same as an adult. Rounding out our meal was the sushi and she had a kids lemonade. Let's recap: 1 appetizer 2 entrees(1 kids) 1 kids drink $92 frickin dollars!(see attached receipt) But wait, I'm not done. The waiter was a trip. He wasn't especially attentive or friendly. I had to ask for a child's cup. I had to ask for my ice to be refilled and he didn't even bring out a fortune cookie with the bill. Ok, so not horrible but here's what unnerved me: When I gave him my debit card he handed me a little machine to insert it in. Once I did, it gave me my total and presented me with 4 tip options: 18%/20%/22% or a button beneath those that said 'custom'. I am very forgetful so I asked the waiter can I take my card out first. He then told me that I can pick one of the three options and then take my card out. Intrigued, I acted as if I misunderstood him and he again proceeded to instruct me to pick one of the predetermined tip amounts(totally omitting the 'custom' option) and then remove my card. And this little guy stood over me as if to make sure I left him a good tip. So with him standing right over me, I proceeded to press the 'custom' button and left a $14 tip which is a little more than 15% of my $92 bill. I am an excellent tipper when I have excellent service. His service was merely adequate, not special, so I left him a tip that reflected that. All in all, the experience wasn't horrible but just not a good one either.
