Went here on a Friday afternoon to enjoy the happy hour. We sat out on the enclosed patio that was pretty empty. We ordered several appetizers and drinks. Food was amazing and the service excellent. Low score is due to the fact the restaurant was filthy. The hostess sat us and gave us menus we couldn't read with all the food on them. Our server brought us clean menus. The tables were so oily and greasy you could write your name on them. Ours had food and fingerprints all over it. Finally when I went to pay my bill I had to have our server use the table kiosk as I wouldn't touch it as filthy as it was. I came here for lunch and although it was quiet that day I can see the potential of this restaurant. Dimly lite to give a more intimate feel, grab a booth and not a table cause then tables looked crammed together and I'm a lil too thick to be bumping into people. Anyway our waiter was super nice and very attentive which was a plus for me. My sister and I ordered some edamame and they were cooked perfectly with just the right amount of salt. I could sit there and eat them all day! Then I ordered the chicken and shrimp fried and and it was delicious! I think for the price they could have given a bit bigger person but I'm probably being greedy because it was so good and the shrimp was big too, not those invisible shrimps you get from the Chinese restaurant! Lunch specials was a HIT! A 3 course meal insisted of, an entree, appetizer, and lastly a dessert and let's not forget a glass of wine all for $39! Plenty of options for lunch! And plenty of seating. It was recently my birthday and my co worker wanted to treat me for my birthday! She suggested we try the Power Lunch and we can be back in time. If you want to guess if it was really 45mins. No no it wasn't. I don't work far from the location so the drive is about 7mins for me. When we walked in we were greeted and sat immediately. It was very modern insider and had a great vibe. We both ordered the Chicken Dumplings, I had the Bacon Cheeseburger with the bacon and sauce on the side and no tomato and she had the Chicken Sandwich and We had to have the Brownie to Go. The dumplings were very good which I was surprised because I don't normally like the filling in most dumplings but I enjoyed this one. My coworkers chicken sandwich was very dry they put the smallest amount of mayo possible. My burger was more bun than anything I ordered mayo and bbq sauce as I wasn't a fan of the sauce. Fries were my favorite. Brownie was good. Price for the power lunch was good. Service was a little slow for it to be power lunch. Overall I would come back and try something different. read more

This place has quietly become our Christmas tradition the last several years. It's one of the few places actually open Christmas Day and while that in and of itself is awesome, the drinks and food make it feel pretty special. In the process the new GM and staff seem to be hitting all the right notes. This year we didn't find the salmon lox on the holiday menu and skipped the sushi and went with the Fried Chicken Sando and Asian Salad with the macadamian crusted chicken. Both came out in a very timely manner and were killer, but the real stars of the show are still those killer martinis - both the espresso and holiday peppermint! We recommend getting there around 11 to get the best service, noting that bartender Justin took great care of us making for a fantastic holiday excursion here for a 3rd year in a row! Kona Grill has been nothing but an amazing experience. I went in with no expectations and walked out a very happy person. First, the restaurant is decent, nice looking from the outside and them having an indoor/outdoor patio is a plus. The main hall is a bit dull but love the live fish tank behind the sushi bar. I ordered the Picasso roll, customized with spicy tuna and cucumber + mango. The staff was very kind enough to do that due to my restrictions. The quality of the fish was fresh and they apparently ground it fresh each day. You can tell immediately. The signature rolls are great pairings and the sauces including the spicy mayo and ponzu sauces are made in house. You would not be able to tell from the outside this place sells quality sushi but you will be impressed. I have also had the other items before that was good but I think the main sell for me here is the fresh sushi. Overall, staff was excellent and accommodating. So, as a seasoned reviewer, I can tell you guys one thing. Don't believe any of the people that just rate a place based on one person, especially when it's multiple people doing it one after another. The service was very friendly and attentive. That's a 5 out of 5. Honestly, the prices for the food we got was exactly like the negative reviews. We ordered meatballs, salmon crudo, salad, steakhouse burger, fried rice, sushi, and dessert. Not sure why my family wanted to try this place but it's a measly 2 out of 5. Not worth a visit to be honest. It was a waste of money. Definitely not a 4.6 on Google. That's fake. 3.6 on Yelp is too generous. -meatballs 1.5 - it was basically meatballs and mashed potatoes that I could have gone to the grocery store and made myself. Not worth $24 for 4 pieces. -salmon crudo 3 - this was good but it's the same price as the meatballs. This should have been like $13. -salad - basic salad for $15. -steakhouse burger 3 - it was a pretty good burger and good size. It will fill you up for sure. Not for $27. You can go to Freddy's to get a steak burger combo for less than $10. - the wagyu steak fried rice was $27 and barely had any wagyu in it. The sushi was laughable. The Las Vegas and coconut shrimp were like $22-23 for 5 pieces. These should have been $15-16 max. The shrimp was cut into tiny pieces. Desserts weren't any better. I was just there this past Sunday for lunch with a friend who had never been to Kona Grill and she loved it and we both loved the service we received from Suzanna. She was very kind and funny. My husband and I came for lunch on MLK Day, and though not very crowded, the wait to have our server come or anyone acknowledge us was pretty horrendous. While the food was pricy, we appreciated that they had happy hour all day for food on Mondays, which helped manage costs for apps. My husband got the poke bowl, and I got the garlic lemon penne with tofu, which both had generous portions / were rich. We ended up skipping dessert because we didn't want to wait and it was pretty pricy, but I'm glad we came at least once to try it. Came here with my family and I won't be returning. In my opinion, their prices are very high for the quality and amount you get and if you're gluten free as I am-VERY few options. I got the filet which was fatty and came out barely warm. The sides it comes with are green beans and whipped potatoes that aren't gluten free. Their side selection is extremely limited. The only gf sides were rice and Brussel sprouts (I believe the Brussel sprouts were gf). I had the turmeric rice which was bland and asparagus that was their seasonal vegetable. It didn't say on the menu that season veggies were gf so I hope it was. There are no GF dessert options so everyone in my family had something but me. We had such a wonderful experience at Kona Grill Oakbrook! We went for dinner with our daughter and granddaughter, and from start to finish they truly knocked it out of the park. The food was excellent across the board--everything from the appetizers to the desserts was beautifully prepared and delicious. The drinks were also spot-on and really added to the evening. What stood out the most, though, was the way the restaurant handled our visit. They went above and beyond and generously picked up the entire meal, including drinks, appetizers, and dessert. That level of care and hospitality really meant a lot to us and turned an already nice evening into something special. Went on a Tuesday night. Our waiter Chris was so nice. Food came out fast and it was delicious. Had the Avocado egg roll, stuffed with avocado and crispy on the outside. Had a small amount of cabbage type salad which was very fresh and crunchy. Wish there were more. Also had tried the chicken satay with peanut sauce. Note, chicken cooked with ginger. For my entrée I had the chicken pad thai noodles and added tofu. The tofu helped make it more filling. Squeezed lime on it and it was delicious. There was a good amount and was only able to eat half and take the rest home. I was very thirsty afterwards, so may have a bit too much salt and didn't realize with all the flavors. When finished there is a table kiosk to pay your bill. Our waiter helped us with it, since we forgot it was on our table. Overall food was delicious, but it is on the pricier side. read more

This is one of the few times where I'll say the place deserves credit for training their customer service staff well more than the quality of the food. Our server was polite and timing his visits very well. It was just the right amount of time to check in to see if we needed more food or drinks. He knew parts of the menu and the content of the dishes we asked about. The food itself was more on a 3-4 star gauge. The happy hour menu is very enjoyable because there's a lot of quantity for the price point. I'd highly recommend people to enjoy the happy hour menu because that alone makes a memorable experience. The ambiance of the place is very nice. The place was relatively empty, but we waited a little bit before sitting. Went on Easter with the family. We had 6 adults and 3 children, 7, 2.5 years and 18 months. We had reservations, so I don't see how our table could not have been assigned to someone. There was obviously an argument going on between the servers and the hostesses about who would take our table. We were ignored and sat there with three hangry kids for a 1/2 hour before the server even took our drink order! At least 3 tables turned over before we were served. We were short one appetizer and an entrée, which, by the time the server came back for us to let her know, we just refused them. We were there for nearly 2 hours by then. We had her take the items off the bill. She did bring complementary desserts along with the bill and apologized profusely, which saved her tip, however, it was an overwhelmingly bad experience. read more

This was hands-down the worst dining experience I've ever had, and it happened during Restaurant Week. We arrived Saturday around 7:00 p.m. and waited about 20 minutes, which was fine, but there was no real waiting area, just a cramped lobby. We were seated on the enclosed "heated" patio, which was freezing the entire meal. Our server, Thomas, was polite but extremely inattentive. He focused almost all his attention on a nearby table of ten while our table of three was repeatedly ignored. After dropping off drinks, he disappeared for over 15 minutes, never refilled our drinks, and rarely checked on us. We ordered calamari, a salad, and entrees. I ordered the Restaurant Week menu, which was supposed to include an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. The calamari arrived without small plates, and we had to track those down ourselves. My Restaurant Week appetizer and our salad did not arrive until after our entrees were served. The food itself was unacceptable: Macadamia chicken came with ice-cold mashed potatoes Sweet chili salmon was served with cold, gummy fried rice When we asked for a manager, our server did not get one, and I had to go to the host stand myself. The manager seemed unprepared and unsure how to handle the situation. She comped the salad and gave 20% off but never offered to remake the food or provide additional help. The final straw: I never received the dessert included with my Restaurant Week meal. I paid the bill (still around $100), waited over 20 minutes, asked twice about the cake, and it never came. We eventually left without it. We were ignored, served cold food, and charged for items we never received. Completely unacceptable. Kona Grill will not be getting another visit from me. read more

Just cancel the Mother's Day brunch. Thw whole production was poorly planned, poorly executed, understaffed, and thrown together sloppily. The upside, our experience was so bad that the GM Rai, comped our bill so we only paid the tip. The downside, our reservation was for 12:30, we were sat at 1pm, half of the table ordered the brunch option that was supposed to include a bunch of stuff but only half came out, everything came out at different times, and everything that was supposed to be served hot, came out cold. They didn't have enough tables or staff. We were sat on foldable lawn chairs in a table that was added the bar so not a real area so people were walking past us, brushing against us and standing over us hovering the entire time. Half of the tables had table cloths because they were folding tables. It was a hot mess. Of course they apologized but everything was terrible except the spicy tuna roll. read more

Our server (Charlie) was very kind and checked on us frequently. The manager also stopped to check in our experience. Credit should be given where it's due. Wow my first update since 2009... Although I no longer live in Illinois, I do enjoy visiting my old haunts like Kona. So I went alone on a Thursday. Got there at 1:45 which was before lunch specials ended @ 2pm, and before happy hour started at 2 pm. So I asked to be seated on the patio (with space heaters) and got a full price beer ($8) and waited until 2pm to enter my order. I must say, prices have gone up (no surprise right) and the dinner menu prices are a bit steep. So the lunch and happy hour specials are especially welcome. At 2 I ordered a spicy tuna roll ($9) and a chicken satay ($3) and a beer ($6). It was enough for me and while I enjoyed the small meal, I realized that the satay was a bit skimpy. My server was attentive and when I indicated I was through he brought a tablet on a stand to my table and let me check out on my own. This was appreciated since a hovering server is never welcome when considering the tip, etc. All was good and I would return again and again for the specials only. read more

Appetizers included potstickers and edamame. They were good, not great, but good. Six very small potstickers, and a soup bowl sized order of edamame. Entrees included: kid's bento box, which included California roll, edamame, mac and cheese, and orange slices. Kids have options for the box...these were the choices my granddaughter picked. Crunchy tuna roll. Grandson said it was good, but not spicy enough. Sea bass--tasty, but smallest portion ever! They should be embarrassed to charge what they did! Vegetarian roll...very bland. Side of brussel sprouts got a thumbs up. KG cheeseburger was very good. Fries were cold. We sent them back, and they were replaced with hot ones. They tasted like fish...I'm guessing they were cooked in the same fryer as the fish (fish and chips were on the menu). We actually liked the flavor, but since the fries are advertised as vegan, this could be an issue for some people. Sushi roll and salad combo plate was good. The asian salad was very good. Shrimp tacos were delicious! I loved them. Spice level was perfect. Overall, I found the restaurant to be very pricey. Portions were ok, but certainly not overly generous considering the prices. Beware of Kona Grill in Oak Brook Terrace, IL. My girlfriends and I scheduled a lunchtime Happy Hour reservation and was met with you can only have it at the bar. Evidently it is a January special only. It didn't make much sense as there were a ton of table and chairs in the bar area that we weren't allowed to sit at unless we planned to eat at the bar. My guest were forced to sit at the counter and yell and scream Across the bar while the entire restaurant was empty. We asked if we could order at the counter and move to A table so that we could take our orders and still be able to converse. This location is short staffed, food served cold and just wasn't customer accommodating. Some of the people I came with decided to eat at the bar as they came from a far to eat. A guy ended up coming after mentioning no one had been here. He was VERY rude, acting as if he couldn't hear us, whispering to the guy working with him and admitted to the guy he was working with that he was talking shit about us. Which is insane. I approached the manager and informed her of the situation. The server got switched and the manager came to the table to ask what had happened and to inform us that the server was switched. We informed her that her employee admitted to talking shit about us and she just looked at us. And admits she doesn't know what's going on and why everyone is around the restaurant playing. Warning. This is not the same Kona of years past. Sadly they went from one of our top 10 favorites to never again. A few years ago they sold out to someone new. These new owners changed everything that made them good. Food and drink selections. Deals. Quality. Customer service. All out the window in 2025. So many of our favorite dishes, drinks and deserts gone. They raised the price of everything by double! Standards we use to get are now twice as much. Sushi rolls nowhere near the size and quality they use to be. And yea they all went up too. Staff just never seems friendly or to care anymore. There use to be some amazing waitstaff we actually looked forward to seeing when we went it. They got to know us. Not anymore. This last visit in a couple weeks ago was it. Kona grill is certainly welcoming on the inside with its beautiful bar and trendy ambiance but it stops there. They must source all of their food from places with 100% tariffs because the pricing is shocking when you see the menu, starting with appetizers. Wonder why they don't publish menu prices on their website? Many of the appetizers are $20+ and what you get is laughable. It doesn't stop there. The main dishes have skyrocketed and the portion sizes make you leave hungry. Kona used to be a great place to eat great food and a good price. Now it's subpar food at a steep price.
