I think I have heard about this chain since I was a kid which is a half century ago. I have driven by them almost as long. So have others in our group, so almost that dined were happy. Only one has been there and only for an aunt birthday each year. But our group love Japanese Steakhouses and have been to a few local ones, so I have a few comparables. I found my food a little more spicy but it still warmed up well. Others also agreed it was more spicy but good. The salads were not finished or the soups. Average at best. The grilling was what you expect, onion volcano and chopping but chef not very talkative or interacting. Other service was good but average. Me & my family dined at the Northville Benihana location last night and it was a disappointing experience. I ordered the Benihana trio which included a steak,shrimp and chicken. With it I ordered double chicken fried rice which was delicious,however I was shortchanged on my steak,shrimp and chicken. The cook gave me 3 free shrimp for appetizers included with the meal. However I only received approximately one third of a chicken breast, two and a half shrimp and about half of a fillet mignon steak. This skimpy meal cost about $60,and we all walked away still hungry . We did notice that the four women dining received ENORMOUS portions and had plenty to take home. Save your money folks,because Shogun Japanese steakhouse offers WHOLE portions of food,and a more entertaining experience with the table side chef. Made a 730 pm reservation online using the app "open table". Arrived 30 minutes early. Parking was full. Open arrival, Informed the host who we are. She looked up my name in the monitor, then said that the table isn't ready and is being prepared. While waiting, it would have been convenient if there were seats available for us to sit down instead of standing in a crowded corner with other guests. Anyways, my name was called and the hosts escorted the three of us to the hibachi grill. We were Seated alongside two other guest couple. The lady server was full of energy and went straight to the point of getting our orders like what to drink and start with appetizers. Limited selection on the menu, the lowest price for 5 course meal is $30+ per set, while the 6 course starts at $40+ with an ice cream or sherbet option for dessert. The hibachi chef arrived as soon as we finished eating our onion mushroom soup and Benihana salad. The cooking show started with the chef drawing a smiley face on the flat grill using cooking oil. Then comes the egg show, the heart shaped chicken fried rice with lots of soy sauce, the onion train and the shrimp tail throwing. That night happened to be the birthday of our seat mate so she gets to throw the shrimp tail inside the chef's hat. Nobody was able to get a free meal from throwing the shrimp tail inside the chefs hat. The onion soup was very hot, disliked the carrot vinegar dressing on the salad, the grilled chicken and fried rice was amazingly good despite many ounces of soy sauce was used for enhancing the flavor of the rice. The green tea also tasted good. Had to take off my winter jacket because the room was starting to feel warm. Its an open dining area so I could hear the noise from the chefs of other hibachi table. Our chef was making noices by hitting the grill with his metal spatulas. I don't remember hearing music. Our total bill was $80++ minus the $30 e-coupon they sent for my birthday. I'm glad I googled vegan options beforehand because neither the miso soup or the mushroom soup are vegan. instead, I got two salads, which the dressing is the best so that's fine with me. Benihana surprisingly has a tofu dish on the menu. I let the server know that I was vegan when she asked about food allergies. The chef cooked all of my items first so that they did not touch any of the meat or dairy products. the tofu looked scary when it was first placed on the grill as it looked very dry but after it with sautéed and sauced up, it was delicious. overall was happy with our experience. After numerous attempts, I decided that my only option was to visit the restaurant in person, which was both inconvenient and frustrating. Upon arrival, I placed my order with the manager, Jason. He informed me that my order would be ready in 25 minutes. Despite this assurance, I waited a full 45 minutes before receiving my food. During this time, I noticed a lack of organization and urgency among the staff, which contributed to my growing dissatisfaction. Additionally, when I finally received my order, Jason informed me that there was no to-go silverware available unless I waited an additional 10 minutes. This lack of basic preparation was surprising for a restaurant of your caliber. My disappointment only deepened when I returned home and discovered that my order was incorrect and overcooked. I had ordered the Samurai Treat with steak and shrimp, specifically requesting the steak to be well-done. Instead, both the steak and shrimp were burnt, rendering them nearly inedible. I also ordered two chicken fried rice dishes without vegetables, yet the order did not meet these specifications. For a bill totaling $157, the service and food quality I received were unacceptable. The lack of concern from Jason and the overall experience have left me with no desire to return to this location. I feel compelled to share my experience with others, as I believe no customer should endure such poor service and quality.
