Is the service always bad? Yes. They didn't give us our soup til 50 minutes after our reservation started. Our food order was just sitting there for almost an hour on a piece of paper. I really wanted a water refill once the cooking started but this of course is when your waiter disappears. The waiter said he'd give me more ginger sauce but it never came. They also always try to never give you the ice cream and tea that comes with the meal unless you request it. Make sure you ask! However, the food is always so effing good. That garlic "butter" always slaps. Sure it's not authentic Japanese food and it's white washed to hell but it still tastes so good. I had the scallops and steak. The place has not change, and is always recommended that you make a reservations in order to guaranteed a seat and short wait. Also, if you are reserving for a group, it has always been a practice that everyone is at the restaurant in order they sit you in. So always take note of being on time, or be attentive to the scheduled reservation. Food: While there 2 unique type of dish served, 1 is the sushi menu, and the other is the 'teppan yaki or cook at the table style' Chicken fried rice is often loved by all, especially for garlic butter lovers, and big scoop being generously added by the chef. You typically start with a salad, where the dressing is heavenly delicious, Soup, is served as well before the kitchen chef start his demonstration show/ cooking. There are variety of selections, steaks, chicken, seafood, or a combination thereof. We normally go for the melt in your mouth - fillet minion, and this time, they have 'ribeye' on their special menu. We learned the Texas way of cooking, so we normally order in 'Medium rare' steak . I dread coming to this location but went because of a group outing. The service was great. The food on the other hand was not thoroughly cooked. The chicken served was pink still and the beef julienne had no flavor. They now offer plain butter for the rice with no garlic mixed in as an option. The cook served the vegetables as if he turned them over once and cut them then served. Per my request I request my meal cook longer. As a Benihana fan I like my veggies sautéed with pepper, salt and butter. This was not the case. Overall the salad was amazing and the Prickly Pear drink was top notch. If you decide to go make sure your meat is cooked the way you like and make sure the chicken is cooked thoroughly with no pink inside. I have gone to Benihana over the years and this was the absolute worst experience I have ever had. To start the waiter broke a glass on the cooktop. It shattered everywhere and steam almost hit us. Then they cleaned the grill and expected us to eat on it after glass went everywhere. We said I don't think that's clean enough we see shiny specs everywhere. So the chef comes out and clean it too. Then still they expect us to eat on it. When it's still on the table. Our friend that was with us almost ate a piece of glass. He pulled it out of his mouth after drinking his water. So was everyone there drinking glass!! What about the pieces we couldn't see. So then we ended up finally switching tables. I would of hoped they cleaned that table appropriately otherwise tomorrow someone will be eating glass and won't even realize it. The manager never really seemed to care. When someone pulls out glass out of their mouth you would think more care would be provided. Also, you can die from eating glass I hope someone investigates this place after this incident. Really unacceptable. For someone who went here every year this year not impressed. I'm not someone who likes to make a big deal about things but this is pretty horrible service and a health code violation. Apparently it's ok to serve glass in your fried rice. Before coming here I was a little concerned because of the other reviews, but I ended up really enjoying the experience. My friend and I did have reservations and did have to wait an extra few minutes, but it was not a huge inconvenience. We sat with a couple of other nice groups that had kids. This was actually a great restaurant for them because I think it kept them entertained and they also had a coloring activity for the kids. They also enjoyed watching the chef's tricks as well. The space is well ventilated and my clothes didn't smell like a restaurant afterwards which was a bonus. The food does come out in stages so we had the soup with mushrooms and fried onions which was actually really delicious, and then a fresh lettuce and carrot salad with ginger dressing. I was really impressed because the lettuce was super fresh and didn't have brown edges, and the dressing was really tasty. Then they made the chicken fried rice, cooked the zucchini and onions and then cooked all the different meats. It was a good amount of food and I had a little bit left to take home. I also had the green tea ice cream which was nice and light and tasted like matcha green tea. As for the service, our waiter was very nice and kept checking in on us for refills of drinks and also letting us know when our chef would be coming out. It was nice that we had the soup and salad appetizers at least to tide us over while waiting. It's smells old when you walk in & you immediately notice how uncared for the building is. It's adequately staffed, but they were not that friendly up front. Our waiter was nice, but he was very quick back & forth without helping everyone at our table with their needs. The table and chairs were super sticky. There were dirty forks on the room divider right behind us. We ordered drinks & didn't see our waiter for quite some time. When we ordered our food, it was about 20 minutes before our cook came to the table. The people we shared the table remarked about the long wait too, saying they had never waited so long. Finally our drinks came & our cook came out. It was the usual show, with a little magic trick added in. The fried rice was good, but nothing else was really that great. $300 later we felt kind sad. This used to be worth the money & it's just gone down hill. They easily made over $10k just with people that were there when we were dining. They really should take care of the building & do some updating for it to have that special feeling again. Clearly if Benihana really "listens" you would take into account all the negative feedback that is on Yelp & care about keeping your customers. I know I will look elsewhere for this type of dining. Between that, the chicken fried rice, mushrooms, zucchini, soup, salad, and ice cream I was STUFFED! The only downside to this restaurant was the wait. We came at 6:02 on a 6:00 reservation and we had to wait 15 minutes to be seated and probably another 15 before we had our soup (the first course). Taking a moment to recognize the food and crew at Benihana. We eat there often and just love the experience. What makes it outstanding are a couple of reasons- First "our"chef Ander. We call him our chef because we always request Ander, he's become a close personal friend and his food is always cooked to absolute perfection. Ander is professional, highly skilled, fun, funny, kind, entertaining and his attention to detail, making everyone's food exactly to their liking, is hands down the best!!!Period. Ask for Ander, you won't be disappointed! Next the waitstaff. While everyone here is great, we have our favorites in this area as well. Meranda, Bintu and Gabby are amazing! So kind, attentive and personable, they too feel like family. Talk about a winning combination! Any great dining experience is always part food quality and part service and team has it all! They deserve 5 plus, plus stars!! Lastly, I want to shout out a young man, Fong. Fong is part of the support staff and he is just the best!!!Hardworking, always smiling and a tremendous asset to the team. We always look forward to seeing Fong as well. We had a blast at Benihana! As per usual, the food was absolutely delicious and the service was fantastic. I ordered the spicy tofu and veggie fried rice and thought it was delicious! Everyone in my group tried the tofu, despite having strong feelings against it, and agreed that the sauce used in the tofu made it taste great. My one potential complaint is the onion soup. After asking for tofu and the veggie stir fry, I would think that it would communicate that I might be a vegetarian, but I'm fairly certain the onion soup was made with a meat broth. It would have been nice if the waiter just mentioned if it was bone broth or not, as I would have opted against it if I knew. However, I'm not 100% certain that it's bone broth... so hopefully I'm wrong? Overall, an amazing experience. The salad dressing is delicious and they have yum yum sauce if you ask for it. read more

This was the worst experience I have ever encountered at Benihana in all of my years dining here for special occasions. We were treated poorly, unjust, and disregarded. The service was bad that it was laughable. We were celebrating my Husband's birthday and I was reluctant to choose Benihana Farmington Hills as the location to celebrate such a joyous occasion. Our reservation was at 8:00 PM. We were seated at a dirty table...the table was so dirty that I had to ask the waitress for a wet napkin to clean where I was sitting. I informed her that it was my Husband's Birthday and I would like the Benihana Birthday celebration song for him. At the end end of our dinner she came out with a bowl of ice cream without her team, the drum, or the tambourine for the birthday song. Instead, our waitress rushed through a half way decent happy birthday greeting. When expressed my disappointment to her, she brushed it off and stated that everyone was going home so she couldn't do it then walked off mocking me. Meanwhile, there were 3 staff members just hanging out at a table talking waiting for patrons to finish eating so that they clear tables. Just downright unacceptable. That's that. Then there was hair in my daughter's food. I didn't bring it up to the waitress because I didn't want to be mocked. I went directly to the manager who seems irritated that I was speaking to her. She did not check or follow up with our family at all. At one point, the chef left the table because he forgot something in the kitchen. The bathrooms were also dirty. Again, I've frequented this location for years on end and it's severely declining. The experience was awful today the least. The only reason I was ended up here is because that's where my kids wanted to treated their Father for his birthday. I rushed back from Traverse City, Michigan for an unsatisfactory experience on a meaningful day. Unacceptable and disgusting. Atrocious customer service displayed at the Northville MI location on 12/26. I tried calling ahead over 20 times. Yes, over 20 times. Their phone system rings 5x before looping back around to the advertisement and menu again which provides three options- making a reservation, a carry out order, and the first team member available. No one answered for any of the options. So we roll the dice and keep driving. We get to the restaurant and at the front desk Joe tells us we don't need a reservation for the booths by the front, they are first come first serve. Lucky us. We ask to sit. Your staff asks us when the remaining 2 of 4 people will join us. Tops 15 minutes. We are now told they magically have two groups of people ahead of us that are to be seated which they forgot to tell us about- the groups were given 20 minutes to return. We thought there weren't reservations? We asked since we were ready and available if we could sit in the first come first serve as is- In response, we were told it would be unfair for us to sit and not order food, just taking up a table for X minutes. What you don't understand is when my father in law orders, it is nearly half your menu. He dines in often, and always over purchases. The absolute disrespect and disregard your staff shows people who are willing to spend a good deal of money at your establishment- especially during this time- is asinine. I frankly don't know why we are still sitting and waiting in your lobby because the ill treatment shown by your workers has already put a terrible taste in my mouth. The female hostess (possibly asian, blonde highlights), mocked the situation and could be seen in a server station during our meal pointing directly at our table and laughing. Yeah... that's not the treatment I appreciate- not feel comfortable with as It makes a customer feel as though the food could have been tampered with. First of all- fix your phones. That's embarrassing. Secondly, if tables are first come/first serve, treat them as such. Your staff tried to make up rules on the spot while speaking with us, and doubled back in a hypocritical statement. Don't undermine your customers- those are the people who keep you in business. By the way- I am posting a picture of the "first come first serve" booths that we were not allowed to sit in because we were two of four and apparently waiting on other groups.... Yeah. It's been a decade since my last review, and I'm still pretty happy with the food and the service here. I made reservations for a group of 6 for a birthday dinner. We had planned on getting sushi, but our res didn't extend to the sushi bar. The host day is at a hibachi table with another couple. Despite our party being set for sushi... when in Rome. We ordered drinks and placed orders with our table host before our hibachi chef began to prep for the festivities. Moreso than done other Japanese steak houses that I've been to, this was a lot less razzle dazzle with regard to the choreography and more just about great execution of cooking. The food was all well prepared and really good. It should be with the copious amounts of Benihana butter they added to, well, everything. The scallops, the shrimp, our steaks, and a beautiful piece of seared sesame crusted tuna... it was all delightful, and our chef did a great job on execution right vdown to the chicken fried rice. I will say that a reservation is probably wise. I haven't seen a restaurant so busy in years; this place was stacked with people waiting.
