She cited "an event in town" and claimed the restaurant was not overbooked--despite clear evidence to the contrary. There was no attempt at resolution, no proactive communication, and no basic customer service effort. After being seated at 6:45 PM, we placed our order promptly. We did not see a chef until 8:07 PM--over one hour and fifteen minutes after sitting down. During that entire time, no manager came to our table, no explanation was offered, and no corrective action was taken. Our server, who was clearly uncomfortable and embarrassed, was left to shoulder the responsibility alone. Multiple tables around us became visibly frustrated. One party directly across from us left due to the same delays. Our server later informed us that they were the fourth table to leave that evening. We personally witnessed additional tables get up, complain, and exit. At one point, we even warned a neighboring table about the situation--shortly thereafter, they left as well, audibly upset. What makes this experience even more alarming is that multiple employees, including chefs, openly stated that the situation was caused by poor staffing decisions and overbooking--both of which were attributed to the manager on duty. Several employees indicated that she was avoiding the dining room entirely, unwilling to address guests, distribute appetizers, offer drinks, or provide any form of compensation or apology. That level of avoidance, especially when guests are actively leaving, is indefensible. We also overheard staff complaining repeatedly about the same manager, and one table was told by a chef that the restaurant had run out of rice, further underscoring the lack of preparation and leadership. Ultimately, my children never ate, and neither did my wife nor I. Our friends who remained later told us that key parts of the meal they were entitled to were never served. This was not an isolated inconvenience--it was a systemic breakdown. Benihana should be deeply embarrassed by how this location is being run. The absence of accountability, leadership, and basic hospitality was staggering. A manager who refuses to acknowledge guests, accept responsibility, or attempt to make things right has no business running a restaurant. I will actively advise anyone I know in the Scottsdale area to avoid this location entirely. This date night was the best one we have ever had here! Our waitress Casandra was so attentive and friendly. She refilled our waters without asking and made sure we were comfortable during our dinner. She was truly lovely! Our chef Ricardo was one of the best chefs I have ever had at a hibachi grill. He was cracking jokes, smiling, laughing, and truly enjoyed what he was doing. He cooked all of our food to perfection. He took my boyfriend's steak and rendered the fat and didn't add butter and I have never seen a chef do that at Benihana before.Not that I'm complaining about the amount of garlic butter they use! We went for my birthday dinner and it was very disappointing. There was nothing good about it. Our teppanyaki chef was awful! He made weird uncomfortable jokes and was very loud. He ruined the vibe of the dinner by being too intrusive. He was very awkward and clumsy and broke his utensil on the grill. He seemed high on drugs and kept saying how sleep deprived he was. He burned our overly priced steak and seafood. He even said "wow this is totally dried out" The portions were very very small and the food was burned and bland. We arrived about 10 minutes early and we checked in with the host. The host was very friendly and told us he'd call us up when ready. We were seated a few minutes later. We shared the table with two other parties. One party of two and one party of three. Every seat was taken. The server came over right away, introduced himself and took our drink orders. After our drinks were dropped off, he took our food orders. I had the 6 course meal - steak and chicken option and a side of steamed white rice. The soup and salad were delicious as always and by the time we were done with that, our cook came on over. Our cook was soo much fun and entertaining. He made the experience 100000x better. Our food was cooked to perfection and everything tasted really good. Our server was also attentive and kept our drinks filled throughout. Ok it's been a very long time since I've eaten at a teppanyaki restaurant. My wife picked it as her bday dinner so we drove over to Scottsdale to try it out. Had a reservation so we were seated quickly. We shared the table with three other persons. My first disappointment was that there weren't any Asian chefs!! Just didn't make things authentic to me. The show/presentation was kinda mediocre too. Almost like they were following a routine like a robot. As I looked around at other tables it seemed like the other chefs were doing the same thing too. The food was pretty good but not awesome. I didn't think it's worth the price. And hopefully they don't include the show as part of the price of the meal. That should be in the tip. Had a 6:30 reservation tonight that we booked over a week prior. Warned us when we got there that we would be looking at a 30 minutes wait. Turned into an hour wait. (Not sure why we had to wait an hour with a reservation??) Once we got seated it took another hour before they started making our food (minus the appetizers and salads.) so over two hours from when we arrived until our dinner actually started. I'm leaving with a grateful heart but it was quite a roller coaster. I learned that Benihana was open and taking Christmas reservations. Weeks in advance, I took advantage of the opportunity and made a 3:30 Christmas reservation. I was thrilled at the idea of this becoming a new tradition! We arrived on time to absolute chaos. Like an episode of Seinfeld...Irritated customers filled the entrance. I quickly learned that reservations didn't matter much and people who had a reservation had been waiting nearly 2 hours. On Christmas, Benihana? Really? You overbook and commit to 1,200 parties that they could dine with you on Christmas, when there is no way you can honor your reservations? Truly not acceptable. Not ever but definitely not on Christmas. We considered our options and decided to wait. We sat and watched many families learn of the news, consider their options and reluctantly choose to go home and cook. For which I was grateful and also sad. What a disappointment to have to figure that out on Christmas. ‍ After an hour, we were taken to our table. From there, everything was as expected. The service was good. The food was delicious as always. I will note that this was my first time to this location and I feel it lacks the ambiance of other locations. There are 20 chef's tables all in one room. Kinda eh. I strolled in with my coworker during a recent work trip, and it was packed on a Wednesday. They fit us in, and though the wait was long, it was worth it. The food is consistent with every Benihana o have been to. The service is what made it so outstanding. Should have read the reviews before coming here. Our experience was the same. On a positive note our Chef Omar was great and the bright spot of our visit. Everything else did not meet our expectations as we have been to the other Tappan place on Scottsdale and Acoma several times and had good experiences there. Benihana seemed overbooked and understaffed. Our party of 4 arrived 10 minutes before our reservation time and were seated 30 minutes after the actual res. We ordered drinks as we sat at our table and those took 20 minutes more to come out. Soup was a light beef like broth, not really miso and the salad had lumpy dressing. 55 minutes after seating at the table our Chef joined us. His 35 minutes of cooking were enjoyable. We found the restaurant crowed, loud and without windows. While waiting 40 minutes to be seated, we were brought edemmame and I do think overall the management was trying but the results weren't great. Entree prices run $40-60 per person without drinks, without tax or tip. In the end $275 for dinner for our group of 4, feel short of our expectations. read more
