Roasted chicken Bahn Mi and New England clam chowder

A great sandwich and very good chowder. As with any sandwich, greatness starts with the bread used. The freshly baked French hoagie is great. All of the ingredients combine to make this a go-to lunch spot for me. The 12oz New England chowder is a hit as well and is also accompanied with one of their fresh hoagies (I'll save that to enjoy later). Friendly and efficient staff. Seating could be limited when they are very busy. I came in at 1:30 so it wasn't an issue.

I stopped by Benji's Bakery & Café in Anchorage for the first time and tried a few things. The Ube Croffle was the standout -- it was so delicious! It's like a croissant baked in a waffle form, but a bit denser than a regular croissant. What really made it special was the Ube cream -- a light, buttery frosting that wasn't too sweet. Easily a 10/10 for me. I also ordered the Ube Cruffin, which had that same croissant-like texture in a muffin shape. The inside had a light cream filling, and the top was covered with the same Ube cream. It was good, but not quite as amazing as the Croffle -- 7/10. The Ham Banh Mi was tasty and filling (6/10), and the Boba Milk Tea was decent too (6/10). Oh and I got to taste their smoked salmon chowder that my friend ordered. Very good flavor, body, and richness (8/10). Everything I had was good but nothing that was as memorable as the Ube Croffle, but it wasn't cheap -- I spent a total $32 for a sandwich, drink and 2 pastries. Then again, prices in Alaska tend to be higher in general. Overall, even though I've only been once, I'd definitely come back for that Ube Croffle -- it was the real highlight!

Stopped by Benji's for an early lunch since it was walking distance from where we were staying, and we wouldn't have a car until later on in the day. Ironically, the items I was most excited for was underwhelming while pleasantly surprised by the one I didn't expect much from. We arrived shortly after they opened to get our hands on the cruffins and ended up getting 3 total (strawberry, mango, and taro) as new flavors came out while we were eating our lunch. I did not realize that the filling is all cream on the inside and the flavor is just from the injector. So while the top portion has some of the flavor you chose, there are large parts that are just cream which ended up being too rich. The Alaskan chowder was also underwhelming as I was expecting more than a few specks of smoked salmon in it and again way too creamy and rich. The saving grace was that bread that came with it which brings me to the banh mi. I was pleasantly surprised how good the grilled pork banh mi was and I definitely have had my share of banh mi.

We originally wanted Benji's for a Wednesday lunch, but when we arrived, we were greeted by a taped sign on the door stating they were closed for maintenance. We were disappointed after driving 20 minutes to get here, but hey, things happen and at least we still had another day in Anchorage to try Benji's out. Unfortunately we weren't able to make it until near closing the next day, when most of their pastries had run out and they were down to their last bowl of chowder! Still, we found more than enough to order and soon were chomping down on the food. Alaskan Chowder ($6.95) - The clam chowders they offer are essentially different combinations of toppings on their classic clam chowder. The Alaskan Chowder is the clam chowder base topped with smoked salmon. This chowder is THICK. Like it has more solid ingredients than liquid, making it almost like potatoes in sauce rather than chowder. The potatoes are cooked through, although on the harder side of tender. The flavor is salty and briny. There aren't too many pieces of clam, but there's overall enough seafood due to the addition of the salmon. This is a luxurious chowder chock full of solids. I don't know if their chowder is normally like this or if it's so thick because it was the last bowl of the day. The chowder is served with a half baguette, although there isn't enough liquid to dip the bread into. The baguette is definitely more Vietnamese than French, having a lighter and airier interior and an exterior that leaves crumbs all over while eating. The crust isn't quite as shard-like as other baguettes I've had, so it's not quite as messy as some other banh mi baguettes. (4/5) Pork Bit & Cha Lua Banh Mi ($12) - The banh mi includes thinly sliced julienned carrot and daikon, pickled until tangy and very crunchy and lots of bright red coarsely minced pork bits, sweet and savory, tasting similar to char siu but not quite. Slices of cha lua cover the entire baguette, springy in texture and filled with meaty fish sauce umami. Long thin slices of jalapeno, sliced on the bias, grace the sandwich, although as they don't remove the seeds or the pith, so they are quite spicy. Finally, slices of cucumber add additional crunch. There's no than enough mayo and other fatty/liquid elements that the sandwich doesn't feel dry at all while eating. Everything comes together into a nice bite. (4/5) Benji's is certainly a solid place for sandwiches and chowder. I wish we had gotten there a bit earlier to try their laminated pastries and drinks! Bathrooms - Single unisex room

Benji's Bakery & Cafe was phenomenal. It blew my expectations away. I got a chocolate filled croissant, an assorted box of cruffins, and a sandwich. Oh my gosh, where do I start. Immediately walking into the place with everything on display and the smell of fresh baked breads and pastries was welcoming and amazing. The price was great for what you get. I was greeted with a smile and every question I had was answered, the place looked clean and beautiful. Absolutely delicious. The sandwich had fresh baked bread. Perfect, crunchy outside soft warm inside. 10/10 5 stars, would recommend again, and again, and again.

My wife and I just found this place almost a week ago and now we can't stop going all of the pastries I have tried are amazing!! The young men that work there are always nice and obviously very good at what they do! We will definitely almost always have a box of there treats on the counter from here on out!

They don't know how to make a cappuccino! We ordered a dry cappuccino and they gave us a latte. The desserts look lovely, we ordered the strawberry pistachio cruffin, it was excessively sweet and just filled with whipped cream!

I ordered a banh mi takeout, it seems to be a typical cafe setup, not overly friendly service, and slightly overpriced. The flavor of the banh mi was good, with a large amount of what seemed to be French bread. I was left still hungry, but it was ordered and received in less than 10 minutes. They specialize in boba tea and other drinks. Overall, I don't think I'll return, but not a bad place to meet up and grab a unique tea or coffee.

Benji's Bakery is a must visit place on your trip to Alaska. We ended up visiting this place almost daily during our stay in Anchorage. It is by far one of the best bakeries with finest pastries in the US. Their Banh Mi sandwich was also delicious!

Benji's is my go to spot if I want something small for breakfast/lunch. Benji's is a smaller establishment and if you don't get there earlier in the day, all of the baked goods will be sold out. I have never had their sandwiches or soup, but I hear they are very good. The atmosphere is awesome, always a crowd and they play great music. I would say it's more of a grab and go spot due to is size, but you could definitely eat in if need be. The staff is always efficient and friendly, but not overly warm, which is understandable since they're always moving so quickly. I always order the ham, cheese and jalapeño croissant and the borealis cooler. Both are amazing. I will say, this last time I ordered the croissant the style had changed, which gave me pause. When I started eating it, I noticed the taste was slightly off from previous visits so I decided to open the sandwich and found some meat that didn't resemble ham. Needless to say, I didn't and couldn't finish eating it. Huge waste of money. I would highly recommend Benji's if you're in the area. I would say, they are a little pricey in my opinion, but then you're in Anchorage so that should be expected.

Wow, I could say a lot but I'll keep it kind of short. We stopped here as a spur of the moment choice. The food is absolutely delicious. We received quality and friendly service (especially from Erik) staff helped us get desserts, entrees, and drinks situated. Some of the best croissants I've EVER had. We also got The Islander sandwich and a savory croissant. Simply perfect- fresh and fluffy.

Drove past after driving because we needed something sweet . I saw the cream puff and thought let's try something new. Usually i don't do the cream filled, I'm just not a fan. But Oh am I happy I went outside my box. It was oh so creamy and delicious. Support local and go try some of the other items they offer.

Love benjis! They're bahn mi's are hands down the best in town (maybe the only in town). Their boba drinks are a little on the sweet side but if you're craving something sweet it's a perfect refreshing fun drink. Service is quick and it has a ver clean modern feel. Woooooo. That place is The Devil!! No one can eat just 1. My favorite items are the caramel ?danish (looks like a big yeast roll but hollow inside) and the pistachio cream cheese Danish. The Cruffin is very good too!! Oreo cookies in like cool whip stuffed inside a croissant shaped like a big cupcake/muffin! Coffee drinks available too!! Surprisingly delish!! My friend and I came in looking for a quick drink and left with the sadness that our new favorite restaurant is thousands of miles from where we live. This is by far anchorage's best place you can get a fun sweet treat, that is not overly sugary. They have goodies that you can still taste the pastries buttery goodness with every bite and not an over abundance of overly refined sugars, if I had to use one word to describe it would be balanced. I love the taroro root cruffins and the ube cream puffs are amazing got a little crunch on top with a nice chewy cool slightly chilled bread texture and then a nice airy sweet cream center. Also if you need something more savory I recommend a Vietnamese's sandwiches with the hunny pork the fresh bread is amazing crispy flakey with tender meat and crisp veggies carrots cucumbers and sprigs of fresh Cilantro read more

I've been visiting about weekly since I discovered this place about 3 months ago. The Cruffins, boba and teas are to die for! Please go early, the food stuff sells out FAST. The place is clean and the staff have taken all COVID precautions very seriously since closure and reopening. Staff in masks, clean and organized ordering and plenty of spots to wait for your order. They also offered curbside pickup if you call ahead. Thanks so much! read more

To whoever the owners are, you are fantastic. Job well done! I can tell that your family is an amazing team and that it values kindness, loyalty, and exceptional customer service. I don't think I've met any of you in person but it shows in your food, your atmosphere, your cultural climate, and by the way we are treated when we walk in the door. I crave a watermelon/strawberry boba slush ALL the time! The cruffins are dope, the sweet rolls with that yummy middle are bomb and I love all the funky drinks. So right up my alley. Love this place. If you want some cold and kinda refreshing, I'd say try a drink here. But I would personally come back and spend my own money on the drinks. Now I'm only saying this because I've had so many GOOD teas in Portland and the one drink I had just didn't come near to what I've had in Portland. The drink I ordered was the Lychee Long Time - i couldn't really focus on the flavor because the flower petals were throwing me off. Not something I'd spend my own money on again. I hear their pastries are really good, but I didn't end up ordering any. Maybe next time! read more

Every time I came here, there was always a line and it would move so slow. This one day I came by, they were supposed to open at 5:00pm but they put up a sign saying that they would be opening at 5:15pm instead. So we stood in line and they did not open until 5:25pm. Even when they opened, they had a limited selection of pastries-- 3 different kinds total as they were making more in the back and they didn't even have the banh mi bread ready. We waited for a total of 1 hour and 15 mins (we were second in line), waiting for them to open and waiting for our sandwiches to be prepared. I got the strawberry lychee boba and it tasted like a melted strawberry ice cream shake. It was way too sweet and mediocre I had to get something else. I understand that it's a local favorite and everyone wants their pastry and boba fix, but it's not that great to be waiting hours in line for. They should probably get some sort of iPad system so the person taking the bakery orders can just tap on the pictures and swipe people's cards on the square app. It would probably be way faster than trying to write everything down. read more

Probably my absolute favorite bakery I've been to ever. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile so today I took my best friend as a good adventure. First of all the service was fantastic!!! The woman kindly explained the entire menu to us and patiently answered every one of our many many questions. They have a large selection to choose from and it was so hard to pick but somehow we managed. We split the Pork Bit and Cha Lau Bahn Mi and it was absolutely delicious. They make everything including the bread fresh and it was probably one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. For dessert we each tried a different Cruffin. I got the chocolate cake one and my friend got the KitKat one. Both we're AMAZING!!!! I've had croissants at tons of specialty pastry shops and my friend actually studied pastry making and took a class on making croissants last year in France, which I tell you only because when I say this was one of the best croissants I've ever had in my life I want you to fully understand just how good this place is. They know what they're doing. It was perfection! I went back to buy more to share with my family so they could know it's delightful perfection as well. I will have dreams about their cruffins lol. I'm only disappointed I've lived here for a year and a half and have just now tried this place. I think this will turn into my regular cheat meal spot. Seriously try this place you will not be disappointed. read more

This place is amazing! The baked goods are beautiful and delicious! My husband had a maple bacon cruffin and I had a pull a part Nutella delicious muffin thing, both were so good. They also offer soups and sandwiches. Service is fast, friendly and helpful, the place is spotless. I can't wait to go back. read more

I usually have a good experience here except recently the girl with bleach hair I think kalis she said her name, is extremely rude. She always has an attitude anytime I come in and just has very strong opinions about topics that should not be discussed in a work place setting. This girl would benefit from additional customer service training or let her go. My drink is never made wrong unless she makes it. 4 times now. I will be requesting service from another worker anytime I come in again. read more

This place is really fun. Reminds me a lot of my old stomping grounds in Boston's Chinatown. I'd give the bon mi's a solid 6/10 and the pastries an 8/10. The bon mis are on some really tasty bread but they would be a lot more flavorful and satisfying if they had more meat and veggies in them. The pastries are totally delicious. Their muffin croissant things are really good. They are filled with cream and really filling so come in hungry! read more

This is THE BEST BAKERY IN ANCHORAGE! I feel like I've been transported to Portland or California when I walk in. It's worth waiting in line, go early. The cruffins and croissants are the most perfectly made thing I have ever had in my life, better than Fire Island, and Fire Island is amazing. The teas are amazing as well, nothing is overly sweet, the textures and flavors are AMAZING. Can't wait to try more, and I'm so happy that we have food this quality in Anchorage read more

Pastries are so expensive but good. Always out quickly of the varieties. Not much selection left even after being open for a short time. Need to make more of the sellers, so we can enjoy what we love and not worry about the price, coz it's good anyway! Thank you. read more

Great food, great service and can't forget the boba, I have missed some good boba and I finally found some. The only thing I wouldn't order again would be the green tea boba, it was way too creamy, I prefer my matcha to taste more like matcha and less like half and half. We got a green tea cruffin, some gorilla bread and the chicken sandwich I can't remember which bahn it was. But defiantly going back to try other delights! read more

Another winner from the Phonatik folks. Great atmosphere, great food, nice people. We will be back many more times! We tried a bit of everything and it was all on point. Could have done with more jalaps on my sandwich but that's a personal preference. The lychee long time tea was fabulous. Croissant was shockingly good. read more

To be honest, the cake wasn't all that pretty to begin with but it got worse as the day went on and it thawed out more. Picked up my cake around 4pm and by 7pm it was a tilted Mad Hatter cake. I assure you, it was not damaged during transport. When we cut into the cake to serve slices, an entire chunk of cake was missing from the bottom tier and "spackled in" with frosting. This caused the cake to collapse and the top tier slid off to one side. There was also no dowel support between to the top and bottom tiers. Just a cardboard round which slid on top of the buttercream. That probably would have been ok if it weren't for the missing chunk of cake. People asked me if I made the cake myself. Hahaha. It was pretty embarrassing. But luckily this was for a very casual elopement, not a big wedding, otherwise I would have been pretty pissed. My parents did pay a decent amount of money for this, roughly $275. I've seen far better from Walmart's bakery. The shop got stars for the following... Cake flavor: very good! I ordered the champagne cake with strawberry filling for the bottom tier and chocolate cake with chocolate fudge filling for the top tier. All covered in white chocolate buttercream frosting. The cake and fillings were delicious. The frosting was a little gritty, I assume from using granulated sugar, but still tasty. A little too sweet for my liking but it was still good. The cake layers were nice and thick. Customer service: Great! Response time from the shop was excellent. They promptly responded to my emails on the quote and design request. I called the shop when it was about time to pick up my cake and didn't reach anyone at first, but they called me right back. I guess I could have called the shop to let them know the issues with the cake but I have a feeling once the cake leaves their shop in good condition, they would put the blame on the customer. I just won't use them again, for cakes anyways. Anyways, thanks for reading and check out my Mad Hatter cake.

My experience at this place was disappointing. The customer service was horrible. It was my first time going there three weeks back and I didn't know what to expect. I lined up and the bread boy didn't greet me nor were there any signs to inform the customers that we can order pastries while shuffling through the line to the cash register. The bread boy was having a friendly conversation with the lady behind me and getting her orders so it left me feeling dumbfounded. I ordered a couple of sandwiches and drinks to go and waited to be called for it. My drinks order were completed first but no one informed me that the sandwiches would take time and come out separately. I know this is a new establishment but it just seems like some of these people take their sweet ass time preparing the food and drinks. Overall, the service here is inefficient. The wait time is long. There needs to be a sign big enough to be seen by all incoming customers so that they can put in their pastry order right before heading to the register. I've noticed that while the food and drinks have consistently been excellent over the years, the staff could be friendlier. Ordering multiple drinks often makes me feel like a burden, and their attitude towards remaking a mistaken drink was rather rude. Additionally, the limited seating is inconvenient, especially since the pastries are delicious but messy to eat in the car. Great food and great customer service go hand in hand - and this place nails both of them. I ordered 2 pastries, coconut taro milk tea with boba, and a pork banh mi sandwich. All were excellent.
