When I'm in NJ I have to get italian food from a locally owned establishment. I had the shrimp parm sandwich and its was great. The bread was good and the shrimp were huge and cooked perfectly. I went to Bensi's tonight, because I bragged to my friend's that they have the best chicken Parmesan sandwich here, and I guarantee it. Tonight, I looked like the biggest ass hole, because having not been there in the past two years, the chicken parm sandwich was garbage compared to when I last had it. We got there and the waiter had a little personality and asked for or food and I ordered for all of us and for 4 chicken parm sandwiches. They took honestly about 30 minutes or more to get done, so that kind of a buzzkill at the start, along with the stale re-heated bread we got for the table. So, the chicken parm sandwiches were placed down on the table, and before anyone said anything; I had this sad, confused look on my face. It looked so plain, so boring, and so basic, that I sort of wish I never came back because it's like going back to your ex after 2 years without seeing her, and then oh see she gained 50 lbs, is pregnant, and lost her teeth. A very big mistake. I bit into it and it had no flavor, bad texture, the sauce was bland, barely any cheese, and the bread was old and re heated to pretend to be fresh. It was embarrassing. Worst of all, I noticed they used the regular French bread instead of their signature Ciabatta bread that made it even better. I don't know if there's a new chef, but they went away from having such a great chicken parm and it was disheartening. Seriously lol Unlike most people on this app, I always talk to the waiter, manager or owed if I have a bad time or good time and I told the waiter about the issue and he acted like he didn't care. Once we finished and the food was barley eaten because my friends hated the sandwiches as well, he never even asked if we liked or food and barely even talked to us. Seemed sort of racist, but whatever, I was there for the food, not him. Final review basing it off the service and food, it was just bad and I felt so bad I recommended. My husband and I ate here the other night. It was early, 4:00. There was only 1 waitress but there were no tables other than 1 in the bar area. Our waitress throughout the evening spent most of her time talking to her friends at the bar table. The manager, I presume, came in a little later but spent all his time at to POS area on his phone. We ordered the stuffed arancini, it was meh. The pasta fagioli had nothing in it other than pasta. My salad tasted bitter and the house dressing was mostly oil. My husband had the sole francaise and said the fish tasted off, he did not get sick (whew), and the artichoke hearts were hard. I had chicken parmigiana, a staple at Italian restaurants. The chicken breasts were pounded to within an inch of being see through causing the chicken to be overcooked. The tomato sauce tasted like just crushed tomatoes with no seasoning. Went in with my date. I ordered the strawberry and avocado salad, I also added grilled shrimp on my salad. The bread on the table was good. Salad came and there were 4 pieces of shrimp on the salad. Shrimp was room temperature although it was suppose be 'grilled'. Finally took the bill and saw that I got charged $8 for the additional shrimp. Now, the reason why I ordered shrimp was because it only said $2 to add on shrimp. Turns out that it was $2 for EACH shrimp. It's not about the money. It's only a $6 dollar difference. When this place first opened I liked going here but after 6 months it went downhill. Servers were bad and the food was so-so. That was some years ago and the wife and I started going back and it is as good if not better than it was before. The portions are good sized and the staff is very friendly. I've been going back somewhat steady now about once a week and I generally order the Chicken Panini or the Salmon. Both are pretty good. Haven't been to Bensi for several years. Tried it again Saturday night. It used to be great for quick meal of good Italian food. Madre D appeared to be disingenuous in his welcome and when he brought us to the table which had a dish from previous user and no settings. No offer of water and service was terrible. The free bread had what appeared to be cut marks from a dirty knife. Baked Lasagna portion was just poured into it's dish and was not as large as I remember. Ladies bathroom was dirty. Soap dispenser torn from wall and left on sink. Toilet was filthy. Won't go again. read more

Came here for lunch about a week ago. The buffalo calamari was excellent. I ordered an arugula salad. It tasted fresh, but the portion was small for the price. My sister ordered a pasta dish, and it was much larger. It was very good as well. The waitress was efficient and polite. The atmosphere was intimate but inviting. read more

We have never eaten here before but went based on a friend's recommendation. My meal last night was very tasty - white bean & escarole soup (delicious) and chicken Milanese. My husband, however, ordered pan fried chicken, veggies & rice and his chicken was very dry - I assume they precook it and then reheat on the grill. We ordered takeout from here. I had the chicken cutlet pizza, wife had the bensi sub. We also order the calamari to split. I thought the calamari was just ok... That might not be there fault - but when you order calamari to-go you can't expect it to be as good as when you have it in the restaurant. The pizza had very little flavor. Took the family last Friday night. Have not been there for awhile, other then some take out. Food was good, better then expected. Heard they have a new chef, and food is much better.
