Bento Asian Bistro is a hidden gem tucked into a small strip center in the upper canal neighborhood. The food was very good -- fresh, authentic, and flavorful. Portions were generous enough that I got two meals out of it, which is always a plus. Service was great, friendly and attentive. The only downside was the sweet tea, which had clearly gone bad. Good place to get fast, reasonably priced Japanese food. The quality isn't the best and the service is okay. They have a lot of options, including some authentic Chinese food. The restaurant is near IUPUI and it's not a big place, so it gets pretty busy. The parking lot is also kind of small, but it's free. I've been to Bento a lot of times, but at my most recent visit, my spring roll was cold and there was barely any rice on the California roll. I normally have traditional Chinese food here : bamboo pork , mapo tofu , fish soup , stir fried veggies , short rips etc. but this time I went for bento lunch box, which is same as dinner time / all day. The food was good. I got the General Tso's box and my friend got the veggie box. The menu said veggie OR tofu but the box came with both. The tofu was NOT good. To be fair, I'm not a tofu fan but it was flavorless. The lady who took our order was not polite or welcoming. We are in the restaurant and when our order was ready, despite us being the only diners there, they yelled it out and had us come get it instead of bringing it to the table. Then we spent the whole time listening to their kids yelling and playing. This place was just okay. I came in today for a pickup order of shrimp teriyaki, a blueberry bubble tea, and a Manhattan roll. The man making sushi behind the counter did not even look up at me to say hello, he just called a name and someone popped around the corner to help me. I wasn't super amazed by the bento itself. I was expecting hibachi vegetables but only got cabbage. The teriyaki shrimp was good and large. It's also served with 4 pieces of california roll and a crab ragoon (which was delicious) and an egg roll. I'd recommend getting lunch here instead of dinner. However, I do highly recommend the sushi! My Manhattan roll was delicious. All in all, this place didn't "wow" me so I probably won't be returning but it is worth a try for those that live in the area. read more

The worst pad thai I have ever had. The sauce was oddly flavored, there was a lack of vegetables in it and the beef even wasn't tasty. Seemed like something was seriously missing. Very disappointing! Actually much better than the surface suggests. What I mean is one expects this to be generic bento box/sushi/americanized Chinese food geared towards folks seeking a quick/convenient/somewhat healthy Asian fare. This is in fact true, partially. The first two times I ate here, it's exactly what it was, and if I would have rated it then would have been 2-3 stars. Very much average. But...then I discovered the authentic Chinese menu and thus a current 5 star rating. Their authentic Chinese food is surprisingly solid. I have had mapo tofu, jalapeño chili chicken, hot and sour potatoes, pork with dry tofu to name a few dishes and all were tasty. The jalapeño chili chicken is very good. The jalapeños are sliced longitudinally, fresh (not pickled) and chicken high quality with good spice to it. The mapo tofu was not overly sweet like some americanized versions can be. Reminded me of a meal I will order in bloomington or up in Chicago in quality which speaks volumes as indy authentic Chinese is far behind other cities. I'd probably rate 3-4 based on limited selection if in Chicago or bloomington but the fact that this is in somewhat of an authentic Chinese desert earns 5 stars on the grading curve. read more

However, today, I tried the basil shrimp with rice.. This one does not beat the steak and shrimp. I had read another Yelper's review about it being salty. I hate to agree.. There are some bites you'll taste that is a bit heavily salted. Sometimes the hint of sweetness, basil, and fried rice can hide the taste.. I'm sure my blood pressure will be up to a zillion (joking). Nonetheless, this is still a great place to try out. The prices are pretty reasonable too. During this time of social distancing, there is no dine-in. You can call in your order or arrange for delivery. With the pick-up option.. There is also an authentic menu available with a ton of options in addition to the main menu that already has a host of choices. I ordered delivery for lunch. First off, the size of the Bento Box is decent! It lacked in a few areas. For the vegetarian box, I got tofu in general tso's sauce - it was very liquidy (not ideal) and just okay flavor. The other thing I was disappointed about is the wasabi was awful, didn't taste like wasabi and was a weird, grainy and flavorless - no signature heat that you would expect. The egg roll was okay, the rice was overcooked in my opinion, and the sushi would have been better with wasabi. On the other hand, the taro milk tea was delicious. Well, the food wasn't bad; I did finish it all, but it wasn't anything I'd rush back to have again. I ordered the red curry with chicken bento box. The flavor wasn't bad, but the curry sauce was very thin and clear broth-like rather than the creamier variety usually featured at Thai restaurants. There was also a huge chunk of uncut onion (root intact) in the curry. The spring roll and cheese wonton were standard and fine. The fried rice was actually pretty good and the California roll wasn't bad, but was a little bland; they also don't have pickled ginger or wasabi to accompany the rolls here. The jasmine bubble tea was good and not overly sweet. Service is counter service; you order at the register and pay, and then they call out dishes as they're ready (no order numbers) and dishes for tables don't come up all at once, so just listen for what you ordered (don't forget what you ordered) and cross your fingers that multiple people didn't order the same thing because I could see this getting confusing. You grab your food from the counter and then clear your own table. Utensils and napkins are next to the register. This place is very close to the building my office just moved into; I would definitely stop in for a bubble tea to go, and might try some other items, but am not sure I'd order the red curry or sushi again. Went to Bento for a quick lunch and I wish I'd been inside sooner! It was a small space with an open kitchen, but the food came out perfect, hot, and very quickly. I ordered the General Two's box, which came with a large portion of chicken on a vegetables, a 4 piece California roll, a large portion of fried rice, a spring rolls, and a crab Rangoon. You could tell they have been doing this for a while, because everything in the box was amazing and so flavorful, not to mention SO filling. On the side I also ordered a Spicy tuna roll, which was even better than the provided California roll with great spice and Tuna flavor, and a Taro bubble tea which was refreshing and creamy with those delectable little tapioca boba. If you haven't been here and are looking for a filling, delicious, CHEAP (less than $10 for a whole box!!) meal, definitely give Bento a shot. read more

Bento is a staple for me! I've been here many a times, and so far it's been my favorite asian restaurant downtown. Bento has two menus, the regular menu of classic American asian food, and then another menu in Chinese/English written out on the board by the register. I recommend trying something new, and picking from the authentic menu! This soup I got in my photo, Fish in chili oil, was incredible. Max spiciness and the fish just melted in my mouth. I loved it! I would recommend splitting these dishes with 3/4 people because the portions are massive, or you will have lots of leftovers :) But, if ur not feeling toooo adventurous, they have plenty of bento boxes full of sushi and all sorts of goodies. I really liked the coconut shrimp with walnuts, and I like that I get egg rolls, crab Rangoon, sushi AND fried rice all in one. Personally, I like to pick my food by pictures, so I will continue to update Yelp on what I've gotten from the authentic menu because there are so few pictures even on their menus. read more

I ordered the shrimp tempura sushi bento box and my husband ordered teriyaki chicken-a full order so it didn't come with all the sides. Pros: yummy egg rolls & crab Rangoons. The salad dressing is also really good. Roll was a good size and tasted fresh! Teriyaki chicken was a large portion. Over all it's a good bang for your buck. Cons: the teriyaki chicken was awful. It was like slimy chicken tossed in a sauce. No sauce topping offered at pick up either (it was a to-go order) so it was honestly dry and inedible and we ended up tossing it. The salad that comes with the bento box is literally just lettuce. When I walked in, there were three people behind the counter, and no one greeted me. The man at the register had no knowledge of what food I asked about. The lady took over the order and was very rude when I asked if I could have plain fried rice because I'm allergic to eggs and onions, she stated "no it's already premade". When I asked if I could have the sauce on the side for the coconut shrimp, she stated "if that's what you wanna do" instead of just saying yes we're able to do that. I asked if I could sub the California roll (allergic to avocado) for the spicy crab roll which is only a $.30 difference on the menu, she told me it would be a $2 dollar up charge and the only thing I could replace it with without being charged is rice that I can't eat! Back when I was in college at IUPUI, this strip mall area was chock full of chain stores and other nonsense. It seems to have taken a turn and a fair number of independent eateries have opened up. I ordered a take-out order during my recent hospitalization because I was in desperate need of FLAVOR and Hospital Food does not provide that. For those not familiar, these Bento boxes are basically full meals and even if you're really, really hungry, DO NOT over order because you will get a lot of food between one box and maybe adding an appetizer. So for the food I actually ate, I had the General Tso's Chicken bento box (yeah, I know, go ahead and crack the jokes) and the gyozas. The gyozas were actually the highlight of the meal. The meat was juicy and flavorful, a bit of soy sauce helps but not entirely necessary. These were good, and I imagine they would've been even better if they were served dining in at the restaurant fresh and hot. The box came with the chicken and sauce, a couple pieces of broccoli, sushi (New York roll was my choice) and some brown rice. Again, this is a good amount of food for a good value. Nothing blew me away, but I was just happy to have non-hospital food. I was stuffed after this and barely touched my udon noodles or the salad. Yeah, I know, who orders salad at a bento box place? Well I do, because the hospital's definition of a "salad" all have meat or cheese on them. This had neither, but still, way too full to really properly enjoy it and give it a good review. Overall, if I was hospitalized again or if I was regularly living and working in the area, I'd probably come here on a regular basis. I don't know if this quite makes a destination dining experience, but if you're an IUPUI student or a nearby resident/worker, this is probably one of your better choices for your lunch break. read more
