I went in near closing and even then.. the staff was so nice and accommodating. As someone who isn't too familiar with Taiwanese food, I was surprised by how much I loved everything I ordered. SETTING: Corner of a large plaza on the side between Nick the Greek and CVS. Small venue, mostly a takeout spot. They do have 1-2 tables for two, but I think it would be uncomfortable eating there since you would be sharing the tight space with customers waiting in line. SERVICE: Polite and helpful. It helps if you speak mandarin as most of the visitors are Taiwanese, however English is no problem. Menu is in English and Chinese. FOOD: Large menu on the wall to explain ordering process. Essentially, you choose a meat option (popcorn chicken is super delicious!). Then you choose 3 sides and you get white rice as well. For $1 extra, you can switch the rice out for another side for 4 sides total. Worth it! I have not tried the other meat options, but I will vouch for the authenticity of popcorn chicken. The side dishes I get are usually the cabbage, bamboo shoots, eggplant, tofu, eggs with tomatoes. All sides are very tasty, however, perhaps a little too saucy. Not a big deal though, I still enjoy it thoroughly. IMPRESSIONS: This really is very authentic Taiwanese bento. Not sure if there are similar options close by, but I never felt the need to explore because this place is terrific. Among most of the items are deep fried on the picture menu. I order the only non-deep fried: 鹵豬扒便當. But it came was not as true as the menu shows, that was actually after deep fried then soak it in the sauce. Was disappointed for me - don't like deep fried food at all. Overall. $11 + Tax for a Bento Box with white rice, one main entree you can pick on the menu and 4 side dishes is really worth the money. May good for 2 meals for some of us not big eaters. They do have two small tables in the store but with a bunch of people in the line it's not exactly a comfortable place to eat. Throughout the day they constantly refill their offerings of freshly made stir-fry veggies and they always cook the main protein after your order. The staff are friendly and very efficient. Expect some lines here during peak hours but you never have to wait more than 10-15mins. Fried pork cutlet, 3-cup chicken and well pretty much most items on the menu are good. The pork chop is well marinated, flavorful! The side dishes are tasty(not too salty and greasy), too! The fried pork chop is crispy, but it's too thick. And the price is very affordable. I don't know how to rate this place, so I'm fudging. It used to be my neighborhood's local Chinese takeout, which I found extremely handy, and now it's transformed itself into something called Taiwanese bento. I figured I'd better check it out, to see what's moved in down the street. If I didn't want Taiwanese bento I shouldn't have come here, so it's not the restaurant's fault that the cuisine is not to my taste. A bento box consists of one meat - the choices appear to be mostly pork - on top of rice, plus four side dishes, mostly vegetable. The side dish you order first is the one you get the most of. I picked the pork belly, which was as fatty as bacon: boiled, and with no discernable seasoning. (It came with soy sauce, but not so's you'd notice.) Of my side dishes, the stir-fried celery with slices of fish cake was by far the tastiest, though it had no discernable seasoning either. Tofu with peanuts was at the other end: tough tofu, soggy peanuts. Cabbage and greens OK. The food may well be excellent quality of its kind, and I suspect it probably is. But I will leave this place to homesick Taiwanese. read more

So Taiwanese it sucks you right back to those humid summer days, biking in the narrow allies sweating and near heat stricken, just for that taste of a freshly made hot meal. The flavors are so spot on it just makes you cry tears of joy. I'm giving it 4 stars so it doesn't get too popular and become crowded with outrageous lines. Great value for the portion sizes and price. The rice and sides can be a bit saucy and wet (my mom hates it), if you don't like the porridge-esque wetness, tell the server not to add the stewed ground beef sauce on your rice before they close up your bento. The popcorn chicken and G-pie are crispy and freshly fried, unlike some places. For both, they put them in a separate container, which I like. Also, I think you need to spend at minimum $10 in order to use your credit card if I remember correctly. Overall, a great Taiwanese bento shop. I love me some Bentos because I'm always in a rush. Of course, I also love me some Taiwanese because I have that blood in me. So naturally, this place was really meant for me! Lucky that my friend told us about this place and bought the food from there because the flavors are authentic Taiwanese. Let me start with the side dishes on the Bento. The bento box has one main protein and 4 little sides. When I say little, it's like 2" x 2". Some of the side includes egg with radish, egg with tomato (classic dish), cabbage with dried shrimp, cold eggplant. (All of the side dishes are excellent by the way, I seem to want more of those) As for the main, I would say the pork chop we got was really under seasoned. I mean, I have hypertension and shouldn't usually don't eat salt, but the pork chops don't have any seasoning. No five spice, nor salt it seems. And it was a bit fatty and wasn't chopped correctly resulting in different sizes. The popcorn chicken main dish they'll bag it separately and it seems to be the same seasoning like the pork chop but fried with basil. It's not bad and it tasted like breast meat but I guess it could've been better. We also got the stewed chicken leg, and that was a big hunky leg! The bentos here are $8 each. Food: like the name says, it's taiwanese bento. you choose 1 meat and 4 sides and rice. Price is around 10-12, depending on the meat. Portion is VERY generous. I had the fried pork chop (which is huge), and for sides I had ma po tofu, tofu threads, spicy glass noodles, and cabbage with bacon. Everything is delicious. I had people question me whether or not this place is legit. Let me tell you right now. This place IS LEGIT. You won't find any bento place better than this one in the whole Bay Area. The prices for the bentos (~$9-$10), the sheer variety of choices that you can pick from (4 different side dishes to your main protein - that is CRAZY), the quality of the food, the hospitality of the employees, and of course the authentic quality of the food and experience that makes up for an extremely nostalgic experience. They have 15-16 different options for bentos, and 9-10 different side options everyday. Some may argue that the prices are expensive, but keep in mind that you are getting quality and a lot of variety in choosing what goes into your bento. The only critique I would have is that the mapo tofu side is sometimes too thick. Other than that, I always leave feeling extremely satisfied! read more

I was craving for Taiwanese food and was glad I found this place. This is a small Taiwanese fast food place and doesn't have lots of seatings. It's best for take-out orders. I got the fried pork chop bento and it was decent. You get to pick four out of six sides for your bento for $7.99 which is a great deal. The pork chop was good portion and they give you lots of rice (which I'm cutting out of my diet). The sides were pretty good: eggplants and fried egg with tomato tasted home made, like how my grandma used to make them in Taiwan growing up. I posted the bento picture and my cousin in Taiwan said it looks just like the bentos in Taiwan. The only downside is the bento box doesn't have equal spaces for the sides, so one side gets a lot more quantity than the rest. I hope they will change the bento to get equal compartments for sides. I've had my eye on Bento Express for awhile now but for some reason, I always remembered this fact on a Sunday when they're closed. Not this time though! Since it was my first time, I opted to go into the store to check out all the offerings. When I got there around 6, there were quite a few people outside waiting for their orders, but only one person ahead of me in line. I got three bentos: sausage, popcorn chicken, and basil chicken (three cup kitchen). Each one was $11.99. You get four sides with each bento, so my family ended up trying a fair number of them. They don't label them on the display case, so what I picked ended up being a combination of me trying to recognize what was in the pans and asking if they had specific items. Some of our favorites were mapo tofu, eggplant, glass noodles, and the egg options. They put the popcorn chicken in a separate box to keep it from getting soggy. I will note that it wasn't spiced as heavily as some other restaurants, but I didn't mind. The only thing we didn't really like was the three cup chicken. It had so many bones and tasted a little dry. Otherwise, everything else was fantastic! So much flavor! I haven't had Taiwanese sausage in years, so that especially made me happy. Found this place last minute driving through the South Bay - the bento boxes exceeded my expectation We ordered: (1) popcorn chicken (2) taiwan large crispy chicken bento (3) fried pork chop bento (4) frozen minced pork 24oz - great for kids over rice as back up food at home. Suggestion to restaurant: popcorn chicken to have more salt and pepper taste. The chicken is well marinated but I prefer the taiwan style that has stronger pepper and salt added on at the end. Or ask how much pepper/salt to add on (or give little container to take) We also went across the street to RareTea for milk tea afterwards to completed my Taiwanese food meal craving. read more

I finally had a chance to try this place out despite driving by it so many times. This place almost always has a line out the door around lunch time but don't worry, it moves fast. You pick a meat entree and then 4 non meat sides, which includes egg. I went with the combo because I wanted to try everything they offer but didn't see the small print description of what it includes: red yeast pork, two types of sausage, and a tofu skin wrapped sausage thing. It was all good but I would go with popcorn chicken next time. For sides I got bamboo, eggplant, egg, and bitter melon. It was all very good but the sides just veer slightly on the oily side. They offer to spoon sauce onto your rice which is a nice touch. Seating is limited but this place is right next to a park so, picnic time! Lunch is about $11 and the portion is huge.
