I also tried a slice of the banana bread french toast. Eggs were cooked perfect. Corned beef hash was nice and crispy, hash browns were just ok but the biscuit was so freaking delicious. They gave us some fresh jam which was a perfect addition to the ridiculously good biscuit. The pancakes were incredible. Honestly all so good. Sunday morning. 45-minute wait in the rain. Worth every waiting minute. I ordered an omelet whose name escapes me. Open faced, 3 eggs, topped with herbed cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomatoes, red onions, and briny capers. Maybe the best breakfast I ever ate. I know I'll be dreaming about in nights to come. Hubs had a platter that he was happy with but wished it had come with home fries. Neither of our dishes are on the menu in the app so there must be some changes. The Sugar Shack lived up to it's reputation for wonderful food and award winning maple syrup. Their baked beans, served with breakfast are definitely yummy, and an interesting addition. Coffee is surprisingly good for a "non coffee house". The only negative is the loooong wait for food. We were seated relatively quickly, but had to wait for almost an hour for our food. Whenever we travel to New Hampshire we have to stop here for breakfast at least once!! It is definitely the best Breakfast I have ever had. Wow. The best breakfast I've ever had. Everything, from the pancakes, to bacon, to the sausage biscuits with gravy, to the hash browns was pure perfection. Everything tastes of the locally-harvested syrup in the best way possible. The service is also friendly and accomodating. We called Benton's from 20 minutes away on the road on a Sunday morning and had a table for 11 waiting for us when we arrived. This place is not environmentally friendly at all. They use paper plates, throw away cups & utensils. In 2019 this is unacceptable at a full sit down restaurant. The pros: great biscuits, seemed like home made bread too, big portions. The cons: the home fries weren't cooked all the way so they were hard in the middle, scrambled eggs were runny, pancakes tasted like plain flour even with their famous maple syrup on top. I asked the waitress to substitute the meat that comes with the meal for toast & was told I'd be charged extra when the toast was $1.99 & meat was $2.99 on the sides menu. I told her it makes no sense when I'm getting a cheaper item & she said "ok, I don't want to get a bad review" like that's the only reason to make a customer happy. It's like going back in time and eating at a rustic lodge that serves the best bacon, the best pancakes, amazing omelettes and incredibly friendly staff. Handicap accessible and plenty of room to move around. Had blueberry pancakes, mushroom cheese omelette (with fresh mushrooms). They use only maple syrup which is amazing good flavor. The downside is the paper coffee cups. The coffee is special so the paper cup can be tolerated. All four of us loved the whole experience. If you go here take your own coffee cup. I had the banana walnut pancakes which came with grilled ham, eggs, baked beans and homefries and it was the best breakfast ever!!! A plate full of food and did not disappoint! I was so amazed by the tastiness of the pancakes that I almost regretted ordering a meal with so many other sides. Although the homefries and beans and ham was unbelievably delicious as well. Great breakfast place! We went with a group of 8 people although we had to wait a bit for two tables it worth the waiting. The food all came out piping hot all together. I had the pancakes that were beautifully cooked and served with warm maple syrup. The hash browns were crispy on the outside tender on the inside. Service was very good and the price can't be beat! This place is an oddity. Never before have I experienced such a random mix of good and bad qualities of a restaurant, AT the same restaurant. Right off the bat, the wait was oppressively long - granted, it was a Sunday morning, but 1.5 hrs is a lot. Also, they have a sign-in sheet, but seemed to skip larger parties (such as mine), in favor of seating smaller ones, when they could have pushed some tables together. The selection of menu items is great. The portions are ridiculous. Coming from Boston, and seeing the prices for menu items, I am pre-programed to expect small portions, and as a result, I grossly over-ordered. Not a single person in my 7-patron party finished their meals. The waitress we had was extremely rude. When we first sat down, we were served coffee so weak, it looked like weak tea. I asked for a stronger pot, and my waitress made some comment, as if I wanted my meal served on a gold platter... Perhaps this was her sense of humor; unfortunately, it was lost on me. When the food actually arrived, it was an assortment of good and bad elements on the same plate. Being a maple syrup farm, I expected a high quality specimen - yet the syrup was thin and runny, and lacking in flavor. Some things, like the French toast (bread made in-house), were delicious, while others (like the corned beef hash) were mediocre at best. I'm not really sure that there are other options for breakfast in the area. However, while Sugar Shack has some notable strong points, there is a lot of room for improvement. read more

Greg set the bar pretty high before coming here. A little too high. I have now been here many times, and my opinion has changed slightly, but I still have my qualms. The negatives first, since well, that's what really matters. 1. Rule of no substitutions is ludacris. It basically made ordering anything near impossible for me, since I really don't like any normal breakfast meal. They also don't do egg whites. Is it that hard to crack an egg and keep the yolk in the shell? For the sake of customer satisfaction, I think this rule needs to change. 2. Small/long waits. That goes without saying for some of these places in NH. It is rare to come and not have to wait. 3. The food really isn't "that great". I think that you need to understand we are in NH, there aren't many options, so everything just magically tastes better. 4. When you sit down, they give you about 6 different menus. It is really really confusing, and leaves me often wishing I didn't even have to choose what to eat. The positives: 1. Greg's main draw for coming here was... "Kim they infuse their pancakes with the fruit, like its infused!". I didn't really understand this, nor do I still. It just seems like they put the fruit in the batter instead of on top? I don't like fruit with my pancakes anyways. 2. Good chocolate milk. That takes you a long way in my books. 3. The charm. The charm also takes them a long way for these stars. Picture in your mind, what a "sugar shack" would look like, and this is it. It is very rustic, with all old wooden beams, wooden cabin, wooden floor. The decor inside is well, farmish and shackish. It could be featured in a "NH Living" magazine. If you don' t end up coming in for the food, it is worthwhile to come in to their small shop of NH memorabilia and maple syrup, and experience this "outdoor" charm. read more

People were polite and cheerful and respected the brutal process of sap tapping/collection/boiling. [Cut to 2014]...not so easy to find that now, is it? Well it just so happens than New Hampshire has preserved a spot of two old-timey classics that will transport you back to the good ole days, before the confusion and the noise and over-booked calendars. Sugar shacks are a GREAT place to start! A few tips: Looking for a thirty-minute turnaround? - nuh-uh. Prepare to wait (we arrived at 8:30am on a Saturday in August and there were 6 parties in front of us). It's a small place, it's good food, we weren't surprised. This isn't some table-turning fast-food joint (put your name in, bring a book, wait a spell....or, you could head to a Dunks 20min away). We passed the 45min wait by reading some of the available literature (history of NH sapping) and observing the interesting antique tools on display. I bought some NH earrings and toyed with the idea of purchasing gallon upon gallon of syrup. There was coffee - we were happy! Looking for a table to seat JUST you, your buddy, and your inflated sense of self worth? - Nope. When you *are* seated and you're in a *small* party and it *happens to be* a crowded morning, you *might* be seated with another small party. We were offered a 4-top to be shared with a father-son duo. Another couple snubbed their noses at the idea, but the beau and I weren't above the idea of sharing a table and a conversation with strangers. We chatted about local highlights and hiking trails, it was great! Looking for a half-calf-double-press-soy-caramel-pump-with-whip [and make it snappy!]? Not happening here. Also not happening: re-usable utensils and plates (this point made me sad....but hey - this is how it *used* to be, and maybe they don't have the space/permit/energy for a huge dishwasher). Looking for a WELL-portioned breakfast? Buttermilk pancakes with Maine blueberries and REAL SYRUP (at no extra charge?!!!!)? Maple baked beans? Check-check-CHECK!!! And all for $8. The pancakes are pre-"Let's Move!" sized, perfect texture, perfect berry-to-batter ratio. PLENTY filling with a whole other meal packed up in a to-go container. YUM! It's not for everyone, but it is CERTAINLY right up my alley. NEVER CHANGE, BENTON'S!!!!!!! I give this place 5 stars, plus an extra "Ayuh" for treasuring the sap house tradition and keeping the concept of neighborliness and conversation ALIVE! read more

Fast service, friendly (don't pay attention to other reviews on that), this place gets busy because it's delicious and reasonably priced (for the area). They do lose one star from me for the disposal utensils and dish ware. Please, Bentons, get a dishwasher and ditch the plastic and paper. Not only will the environment benefit but everything tastes better with a reusable metal fork. It's my one complaint to otherwise a great place to eat! read more

It's called the Sugar Shack... so when they serve you up a heaping pile of deliciousness on a paper plate, remember you're not at the Belvedere Hotel. This place is a jewel and there is no other down home opportunity to meet the locals and passer's by at the same time. This the home of the annual White Mountain Boogie and Blues Festival so you never know who your gonna see once you're inside. There could be crowd so get there early. Personally, I like about 1PM on Sundays after the crowd is gone. It's a cool place to relax and have a great breakfast. The servers are awesome and the chef's are friendly. But now we live here and decided to go at noon on a Saturday for Breakfast and it did not disappoint. The place has lots of memorabilia hanging from the ceiling and walls, which is neat. I had an egg sandwich with tomato on their homemade wheat bread. It came with homefries. The sandwich was enormous. I ate half and took the other half home for the next days' breakfast. My husband got the wild berry pancakes and they were SO good!!! Served with their own maple syrup....obviously. We also took home a giant blueberry muffin, which really disappointed me. It had lots of blueberries but not much flavor. The server we had was super slow and not b/c they were busy. Just not attentive.
