There are so many dishes I want to try but because I only get out here once in a while I always go to my all-time favorite Chicken fried chicken. Thats not to say I haven't tried other stuff all wonderful, but that is my go-to. I'm still wanting a Holy Grail cheese. Prime rib was fantastic but to me a roast is a roast is a roast kind of like a steak is a steak for the most part. You can get a good one most place. Wasn't sure what beer to order so the waitress offered me a tasting size, which is always really kind. It happened to be taco Tuesday so I had the shrimp tacos special ($12): 2 tacos, a large basket of homemade chips, salsa and rice. The tacos were great, everything was very fresh, chips were homemade and it was quite filling. We still ordered chocolate cake for dessert which was incredibly thick, moist chocolate cake with a chocolate mousse in between the layers which was just excellent. The food here is fresh and amazing. I had not idead. The burgers are great, the nachos to die for, and it seems everything we order is perfect. My kids also love coming here. I want to start by stating out by saying the food was good. My wife and I split everything, beginning with the Old Soul cocktail. It was a nice blend of sweet and smoky. We had the chicken wings, a mix of Buffalo and sweet Thai chili. We thought the classic Buffalo was excellent. The Thai chili was good but not as good as the Buffalo. We also had the Dewitt burger with a pretzel bun. It was a bit undercooked from what we ordered but overall had good flavor. It came with fries, which were all little stubby bits of fries. Some may like this, but it felt like we got the bottom of a batch. We were here on a Saturday evening right when they opened and were probably the second or third table seated, yet somehow it took just under an hour to get our food. Good looking menu and its prior incarnation was good. I went here on a recent weeknight with a friend and was underwhelmed with the experience. We arrived around 8:15 and ordered the house made bbq chips that were supposed to have chili and peppadew peppers but were told many minutes after ordering that they were out of chili. After agreeing to pulled pork instead of chili another several minutes passed and we were told they were out of peppadews and would jalapenos be o.k. So 30 minutes after ordering they arrived and were decent. And the pork skewers also arrived that we'd ordered much earlier and were cold. We had an enjoyable time here. They have a really cute patio, but it was cold outside (November). I'll have to go again when I can sit outside. We were seated promptly when we arrived and the first thing I noticed was how cold it was in there. You couldn't see your breath, but there were people eating with their coats on. I had my usual amount of layers on under my coat so I was a little chilly not freezing, but I didn't like it. I always wonder if there's a message there (get out so more people can be seated) or if they don't even notice it because the staff is working so hard. Either way it bothered me enough to write about it. Our food was really good. Hubby had the house special enchiladas and I had the shrimp and grits. There were 5 pieces of shrimp and it was seasoned very well. The grits were very cheesy. I didn't get much feedback from hubby, but he was eating nonstop, so I interpret that as "yummy!" The serving sizes seemed just right - not too much, not too little! Our server was very attentive and the bar had a great selection including gluten free beer (Two Brothers Prairie Path). I really liked the vibe of the place too, I just need to visit again when it's a bit warmer outside. read more

Two weeks in a row, we arrived with our dog to sit outside and have dinner. Two weeks ago, we arrived 30 minutes before the deck and kitchen were scheduled to be closed, and the staff, including the manager, said the patio and kitchen were closed. Rude and with a dog, we left. Tonight we arrive a full hour earlier. Nope, they told my wife, the patio was just closed. Management said no too. Side note, both weeks, there were other diners in the patio area including dogs. We have come to the place since the first owner. NOT ANYMORE! Rude, not customer driven, pompous, toxic culture! I am in town for work for 2 nights from Houston, TX. I have been here both nights for dinner and drinks. The first night I had the brisket Mac & Cheese. I'd give that a 4/5 the brisket could have more flavor but the dish overall was very good. The second night I got the country fried chicken. I am not kidding it is better than and rivals a lot of country fried chicken places in Texas. Absolutely excellent. As a whiskey/ whiskey cocktail connoisseur I can tell you that this place does not disappoint. Small but excellent selection and top notch ingredients for the cocktails. Troy is an excellent bartender. I fully plan on bringing my wife for a weekend vacation so we can go to a baseball game at Wrigley and come eat here. read more

I had an amazing experience here. My sister and BIL took me here last night with my parents since this is one of their go-to dinner spots for dining and for takeout. Everyone got a burger except me. The burgers all looked unique and delish. My mom got a gluten free bun and she raved about it (apparently gluten free buns are hit or miss). Then my sister got a vegetarian burger and ate the whole thing. I ordered the Chef's Rotating steak (if I'm remembering correctly), it was a filet with mashed potatoes and the most heavenly brussels sprouts I've ever had. I want to go back tonight to order the same thing! Compliments to the chef! I highly recommend it. I also got the Day Dream cocktail - just perfect for me. We had dinner w/ family at Berger Bros. Pub on Saturday night and our meal was an enjoyable experience. Friends of ours recommended this spot as being "an acceptable option" to bring kids to for a meal. Given that they don't take reservations, we rolled in and they were (luckily) able to accommodate us by pushing the last two tables available together and getting us all seated comfortably. The dining room itself is an extension of the bar (area) and it is not a large space by any means. However, they make good use of it and are able to make accommodations if/when needed without any hassle. Our waitress, Evelyn, seemed like a veteran and I knew we'd be in good hands. And we were! She took our orders (drinks/food) promptly and answered any questions we had. Additionally, she was pretty good about keeping waters/drinks refilled when needed or getting us another round. Finally, when a (very small) issue did occur with one of our meals she immediately worked to fix it and apologized profusely for the mistake (which was totally not needed and mistakes can happen to anyone!). The menu has a little bit of everything on it but it seems that they specialize in burgers. Of the assortment of food that we had around the table the clear winners were the burgers (they really are solid burgers) and the Shrimp and Grits (my brother went on and on and ON about how much he loved this dish haha). The food all came out hot and fresh and tasted great. The portion-sizes are also adequate given the prices. Finally, the paper coving the tables is perfect for kids to draw and color (using the crayons they provided upon sitting down - great touch!). We had a nice time at Berger Bros. and I concur with my friends' recommendation: it gets the job done for kids and has a solid menu to boot! read more

I so wanted to fall in love with this place and make it a regular, but I didn't and it won't. That doesn't mean I won't give them a second chance. We came in on Friday around 6:30 p.m. The place was packed and sort of loud. We only had to wait 5 minutes which was nice. Our server was warm and kind and helped me figure out what beers to order for my flight (4 beer samples for $10). I'd only heard of 2 of them previously new. The flight was brought out quickly and our server wrote each beer name on the paper tablecloth next to each glass. Allagash White was my favorite, and Gumballhead was also pretty good. Unfortunately, I finished all four glasses before our meals even came out. We waited about 45 minutes for our meals (for a grilled cheese sandwich and a burger...). My grilled cheese looked so fancy perched atop a large margarita glass filled with tomato basil dipping sauce! It was tasty, I have to admit. You can choose from a bunch of add-ons like pulled pork, grilled onions, buffalo chicken, etc., to stuff inside your grilled cheese. My only issue was the soggy bacon. Bacon on any type of sandwich needs to be cooked well and crispy otherwise it's just gross. My husband's American burger was okay. He wasn't wowed. And for a place called Berger Bros. (I know burger is spelled with a "u"), you'd think they would have a ton of burgers to select from and that they'd all be awesome. The fries...maybe it was a bad batch? Both of our fries were super hard and overcooked. We each at about 4, and left the rest. They might benefit from a French fry timer? Also, I was told they are seasoned fries...they were not. Unless some people consider salted fries "seasoned"? Overall I wasn't super impressed. I'm sure we might have a completely different experience on a different night with different orders...but I'm not sure I can convince my husband to go back. He's a "one and done" kind of guy...and I'm a "give them another chance" type of gal. We'll see. read more

Wanted to try a new place with some friends from out of town. Looked like a cute place and it was bustling so we thought that was a good sign. We got greeted (if you want to call it that) from a thin woman with straight hair. She did not say "hello", "welcome", "how are you".......she rudely asked how many and said this is all I have? We said ok at first and she tossed the menus down on the table and did not say anything else. I am not sure if she was a server, hostess or manager. (With her attitude, if she was any of those, it would terrible.). My out of town friends felt uncomfortable by her actions and throwing the menus down & thought it was best we left. OPen for lunch on weekend, then closed on weekend for lunch, opens at 5:00 and then filled up reservations by 5:00, we're happy for your sucess but frustrated by the changes in times. I'm so happy that after Union house they decided to keep this place open! I was afraid after they decided to sell it would go downhill but I'm happy to report that's not the case, and stayed in Winfield, which is awesome! They kept the original menu, with some additions, which was a great relief because union house was sooo good. Their "small" plates are definitely a meal in and of themselves. The service was totally excellent. We came in 30 minutes before the kitchen opened and the waitress was so sweet! So attentive to us and our child, even brought us out a basket of chips (which were so good, a little like a spicy bbq house made potato chip). We ordered the chicken fried chicken, which is from the old menu. It comes on a heap of very creamy mashed potatoes which are excellent, then a perfectly fried (not too salty and the chicken was moist) slathered with gravy with a fried egg on top. Heavenly! We also ordered the truffle fries which were delicious. Not over done, with a sprinkle of Parmesan. I love truffle fries. They're soooo good. We also ordered the Rocco burger. It was cooked exactly as asked, medium, and came with arugula, goat cheese, balsamic reduction and was juicy, not to mention to die for the flavor! They mingled SO well. The on top selection was fabulous! They had 3 Floyd's as well as Bells Hopslam, which was great! They've got beer flights for those interested, too! I hope this place stays exactly as is. This is a really great, busy gastropub/bar and grill. We are regulars but last night things really shined. Both food and drink are top notch. Had the fish tacos and my wife had the pulled pork sliders. I think the tater tots with the sliders were house made as well. What sets this place apart is that the food is fresh and made in house. The sauce with the fried pickles app even seemed house made. Our drinks were fantastic-signature cocktails were fresh and upscale (even better than most more fancy upscale restaurants) They were excellent-even though we were eating in the dining area, I felt the need to tip the bartender extra for how good the drinks were-he was so busy but the quality was maintained. They have a great draft beer selection and there food is consistently good. I would like to see a larger burger to accommodate the large bun.
