Just walked in for the first time and tried the Reuben and tuna melt and they were both amazing. The man behind the counter (John) is such a nice guy, it was a pleasure meeting a fellow "foodie" and talking about sandwiches. He gave me a sample of the tomato and garlic bisque and it was delicious. Not too sweet (which is a plus) and bits of tomato. Best tomato soup ON EARTH. You just can't beat a mom and pop shop like Berge's. I've been going there for almost ten years now I think--since high school. They're so friendly and their food is delicious. My faves are the tomato soup (it's so creamy and flavorful, with real chunks of tomato in it) and the BLT. I stopped by Berge's for dinner one night and loved it. The gentleman running the shop was incredibly quirky and friendly, and advised me on what to get given that it was my first time. Queenie (the owner) with her son employ local kids, has always had great quality, the pickles are the bomb, hot pastrami on rye or the meatball sandwich are go to orders always! I'm giving them one star to rate the sandwich i had, which was the pastrami. I had lunch with my boss and we both had the same thing. He didn't think it was very good either. I had to spit about 5 bites out because the meat was so thick and chewy i couldn't chew it and swallow it. You know when that happens and it grosses you it and you can't eat the bite in your mouth. I wanted to support local restaurants and ordered large Sandwiches for the family. When I went to pickup, a grandmother was handling the cash register. I asked if my large sandwiches had the French rolls. In a very rude voice she said "no French rolls!" Ok... I was just curious, "why no French rolls?" I asked in a pleasant tone. "Armenian pita!" She yelled back. I stared at her because I have no idea what an Armenian pita was. Luckily, a really nice Latino gentleman saw this interaction and explained to me that large sandwiches don't come in French rolls. He then showed me what that was. Got it... ok now I know. Then I proceeded to pay and gave the grandmother my credit card. "No American Express!" She yelled at me. I looked around the store and couldn't see a single no Amex sign. But ok, I digged in my wallet and found a bank debit card that was a master card. I handed it over. "You type pin code here!" She said. I rarely use the pin as I thought she would process as a MasterCard. I wasnt sure I would remember my pin, so I told her, "let me try this other card because not sure I remember my pin..." "No! You use this card! I already put in machine!" She said to me. At that point, I had no choice but to guess. Bingo. I guessed right! But holy moly was this a bad experience. I get it. Maybe she doesn't want to be at the register. But if you are in the service industry, during these times, at least put on a smile for your clients. Or get a worker that will be friendly. Customers will notice and business will quadruple. My 6 year old was with me and in the car he says "dad. That lady was not very nice right?" I know whenever I go to Jersey Mike's, I always get friendly service. I really wanted to support local during these times, but for restaurants that don't care to have good service, I won't plan on coming back. Sorry berges. read more

Berge is such a happy man it's a pleasure to visit this shop. I tried out the pastrami and it was excellent. One of the best pastrami sandwiches I've had and I'm generally more of a chicken club kinda dude. Berges mother was there in the shop and he had a young man working with him and everyone has a great relationship. The price was great, the food was great, the service was great. Though it may not look like much, Berge's has quite a history in the small, lovely city of La Cañada Flintridge. The restaurant's quality sandwiches and delectable tomato soup can be read in just about any social sciences book. The place was actually discovered by Vasco Nuñez de Balboa in 1513. After the famous explorer claimed the Pacific Ocean for the Spanish Crown, he made a brief stop at Berge's because he was parched. Thirst soon became hunger as the Spaniard saw the variety of mouth-watering, fresh sandwiches. Vasco went with a turkey and avocado sandwich accompanied by a warm, creamy tomato soup....and that's when it happened... The crazy Spaniard immediately stabbed every customer in the restaurant...claiming victory and the tomato soup as his own. The bastard forgot about the owner behind the counter, who threw pepper in his eye and took his sword. Mr. Berge then ordered Vasco and his men to leave and never come back. The Spaniard agreed, but he never forgot his loss...and that soup. He wrote countless entries in his journal about the heavenly soup, as well as turkey and avocado sandwich, which he claimed had a very generous portion of avocado. Now people visit Berge's to learn of the soup that made the great Spanish explorer bat-shit crazy. Is all of this true? Sure it is. It's currently being developed into a film. If you have not ventured out to the La Cañada to try this great sandwich shop, then you clearly hate turtles and history. The owner is a great guy, and always very helpful when you're indecisive. You can't go wrong with Vasco's favorite sandwich (the turkey and avocado), but I also recommend the ham and cheese melt, as well as the roast beef. And also try the tomato soup...seriously. I hate tomatoes more than I hate smooth peanut butter (chunky peanut butter +1), but I love Berge's tomato soup. The warm, creamy soup brings me great joy...and pretty much makes my day. Mr. Berge's is nice enough to keep his delicious sandwiches and soup at reasonable prices, but he has not really caught on with the times, unfortunately. If you are in the neighborhood, a sandwich from Berge's is a must-have! They use this soft sesame bread for all their cold sandwiches, like my personal favorite, the roast beef and avocado. Their tuna melt is also one of the tastiest around, though I'm not really much of a tuna melt connoisseur. To me, though, it's not a trip to Berge's without getting a cup of their tomato basil bisque. I have a friend whose ex boyfriend tried to woo her back with a tuna melt and a cup of tomato basil bisque from this place because he knew they were her favorite! Things haven't changed much for Berge's since they opened the doors. They offer the same sandwiches on the menu, the same family runs the whole she-bang, and the same table is reserved for the owners. They still offer Andes mints if you don't like pickle spears. And it's still the best sandwich place in La Canada. While the bread used for the sandwiches is the same (and darn good), something is different. Ok... So this place is family owned, which I love. I mean when I mean family owned, grandma still works there. She is the cutest thing! She sits there and greets you as you walk in. The sandwiches are all priced well. They have amazing tomato and basil soup. Which is one of my favorite new spots to have soup at! I can't believe I didn't come here earlier. The places name is Berges, which Berg is an Armenian name. My grandfathers name. This is one of the best sub places in town I have ever had. Glad they are still in town.
