Ok... So this place is family owned, which I love. I mean when I mean family owned, grandma still works there. She is the cutest thing! She sits there and greets you as you walk in. The sandwiches are all priced well. They have amazing tomato and basil soup. Which is one of my favorite new spots to have soup at! I can't believe I didn't come here earlier. The places name is Berges, which Berg is an Armenian name. My grandfathers name. This is one of the best sub places in town I have ever had. Glad they are still in town. I used to frequent Berge's quite often years ago. I stopped in recently and had a very good lunch. The place has been here forever and still as busy as it used to be. Absolutely love this cute little sammich shop! We came here after hiking to Switzer falls. It's conveniently located off the 2 fwy (coming down from the hike, you make a right and it's a block down on your left hand side). Tried their turkey with avocado, ADD BACON for 30 cents extra. I wish the bread was a bit softer but it was good for what it is. LOVE their garlic tomato basil soup, comes with either bread or crackers - I opted in for the bread since I love dipping my bread in tomato soup. The bowl was only about $3.29 - yummy! 3.5 I am totally conflicted about Berge's.. On the one hand: I love that it's a family owned and operated establishment in an age when that is becoming alarmingly rare. All the food is fresh and has the undeniable homemade quality to it. The service is what service should be. On the other: Contrary to the way one reviewer put it, I did not think the turkey sandwich was "amazing." In fact, I was completely underwhelmed. Yes, the ingredients were fresh. They should be. "Amazing", I think not. My third grade self made this sandwich countless times. In addition, the tomato soup everyone is raving about was just so-so. Oh, and I really don't dig the 'hamburger bun' bread they use on the turkey. I should mention that the Reuben was pretty decent. You would probably have to trek to Oinkster to find something comparable. I have yet to try the pastrami and maybe that will add a star to my review. Go here if you want a good ol' homemade sandwich served by good people. Don't expect the best sandwich you've ever had. The reviews undoubtedly over hype this place. read more

As long as I've been in this area (working), I've never gone here. A co-worker suggested this place and I was reluctant because I am funny about my sandwiches. I don't like them messy or served up on sucky bread. If I have to fight to eat it, I am not eating it. I went with a pastrami on sour dough and wasn't disappointed. The bread was toasted and had a nice crunch to it. The pastrami was good and tender....no fighting with it. Thought I'd only eat 1/2 and end up eating all of it! Very good!!! Dang.. I wouldn't have even noticed this place if it wasn't for my sister! This place is easy to miss but it's worth a try. It's sucha cute lil store on Foothill. As soon as you walk in, you feel like you went back in time. Everything's old and very homey. I ordered their bbq roast beef ($6) and my sister got the turkey and avocado sandwich ($7). When I first got mine, it was drenched in bbq sauce but after I took a bite it was perfect! The meat and bbq proportion was perfect and the meat quality was really good. The bread was unbelievable!! SOO SOFT. I also tried my sister's and it was good but it was kind of a "I coulda made that at home". The sandwiches AREEE good but they are very simple handmade sandwiches. Maybe that's why they are soo good! So if you're feelin lazy to make your own, definitely stop by this place and give it a try! Next on my list is the tomato basil bisque and the tuna melt! I told the sandwich-maker what I wanted, and by the time the cashier counted my change my sandwich was done. + The bread truck arrived while I was there and delivered some fresh-baked bread. Cons: - The turkey on the sandwich was not as generous; I would like a little more meat and a little less bread. - This place could use a little freshening up to come into the 21st century. Cash only and no soda machine (just cans of soda) is a little outdated and could be improved. - The turkey avocado sandwich was good, but was lacking salt/flavor somewhat. Something with a little more salt (bacon?) or acid would be welcome. - The parking lot is very tight; cars coming in will block cars going out, and if someone in a Suburban is trying to get out of their parking spot, it's like the Austin Powers golf cart scene. read more

Had high hopes for this place, based on Yelp reviews. I'm a sucker for a great sandwich, and have been missing my old favorite from South OC. This place missed the mark for me. I ordered a small cup or the tomato basil garlic bisque & the grilled artichoke sandwich. My husband got a turkey breast sandwich and a bag of Dirty chips. Prices were decent as we got all that for under $16. Soup was piping hot, which I loved, but had too many chunks of canned tomatoes. Flavor was good, but probably wouldn't order again. The toasted sourdough my sandwich came on was good, but the artichoke/cheese/chile mixture inside was cold, which doesn't mix well with warm bread. My husband felt his sandwich was just okay, nothing special. His came on their house sesame bread, which also came with my soup. It was soft, but laking flavor. I probably would have given this place 2.5 stars, but knocked it down to 2 for being cash only. Edited to add: a woman who I presume to be the owner sat in the shop, eating and barking at the staff. After a 20 year break from Berges (from when I used to work at Sport Chalet street) I gave it another go. Just not the same - used to be a much bigger sandwich on sourdough with shredded lettuce. I used to keep half for later it was so massive. I wouldn't go back or go out of my way to come here; its ok if you are starving and a block away, just noth'n special. Processed turkey on thick bread with avocado - I can do way better at home! A friend of mine highly recommended this place to my mom and I, I honestly do not understand the hype of these reviews!!! I have had so much better at Mario's and Tony's Deli. I was told that Berge's makes a great grilled cheese sandwich. It lacked flavor big time. I felt that the two cheeses they used did not compliment eachother and for the price, it was highway robbery. My mom's turkey sandwich was so salty she couldn't finish it. Also the price was highway robbery. We got sides of potato salad, which was really good (later found out that they don't actually make it. What deli doesn't make their own potato salad??) and a side of fruit, which tasted like it had been in the refrigerator for over a week. The watermelon tasted old and sour. It was gross! Then it came time for my mom to buy a few large orders of the potato salad. I couldn't believe that they said they only had small side orders for $1.65 each. OH. MY. GAWD. Then we remembered that they don't actually make their own potato salad. I then remembered that I don't think they slice their own cheese or meat there. To the guy that was working there, (I guess that the older woman that works there is probably an owner, and she was super nice, which is why I wanted to give this place more than one star but just couldn't) no, your turkey sandwich is not the best in town. In fact, it's probably the worst turkey sandwich in town. Everything we asked him about, if it was good or not was the best thing in the world. Granted you aren't going to say that something sucks when you work there, but he tried so hard to get us to believe it, and sadly, we did. Cash only. That's okay though. I love their turkey sandwich. John , the son , that runs the place in the evening is super nice and accomodating. Fresh pickles,fresh meat,fresh veggies on a sandwich is always a plus for me. I've never had a bad sandwich from here and I have been going to this spot since I was a kid. Their tuna is really good, too. It's not dripping with mayo like other places, but it isn't dry , either. It doesnt have a fishy smell and is quite tasty. It is cash only and for those that ask for substitutes , go to John and have your order made. I won't elaborate on that. People just have their ways and are set in them and I try to respect that. They also have chips and cupcakes as well as cookies plus a variety of drinks in a can. Well, I'm glad to let you know that this place avoids all the usual mistakes and crafts some of the finest sandwiches I've had on this side of the country. I ordered a corned beef deli sandwich, which did not disappoint at all. One note about the portions - the regular size should be enough to satisfy, as they're quite generous. The only reason that I'm docking a star is that the establishment is cash-only. Somewhat inconvenient, but the product is worth the hassle. Spent the morning at Descanso Gardens and found this restaurant on Yelp. Enjoyed a Turkey and Avocado sandwich and a bowl of excellent Tomato Bisque. Given it was my first time there, I was surprised on entering the joint by the heavy air. I don't know if this was an exceptional day for grilled sandwiches, but the air was thick with grilling exhaust. I checked the kitchen and didn't see an exhaust fan. So beware that your eyes may be watering by the time you leave if the grill is busy making sandwiches. read more

The shop is really cute and small and filled with photos from their involvement in the Rose Parade (so cute). The staff are friendly and adorable, and the prices are very decent. They offer things from salads to a good variety of sandwiches, and boyfriend and I got really similar ones: a pastrami and a Ruben. The pastrami was SO GOOD.
