Magpie's Grill is a small family restaurant that serves different types of food such as salads, sandwiches, hamburgers, breakfast plates and Mexican dishes. It was a good experience to have with service quick and easy. It was not noisy and conversation was easy to have. The salads were plenty and fresh. Pancakes were excellent and sifts. Sandwich was triple decker but manageable! Great prices.

Came at 7 pm and had still quite a few people yet lots of tables and booths available. There is a huge selection of foods. Mexican, Italian, steaks, pork, beef, chicken, salads and more. Lots of beverages and also a bar in back with the football game on. Andy was our exceptionally nice waiter. Food came quickly and met another sweet waitress. Left full and with leftovers. Also good choices of beverages likr I got hot chocolate and mom got cherry lemonade. A warm ans inviting atmosphere with older music and so I loved it. The decor was also so cute and eclectic. Hearkens back to a simpler time.

First time in Magpies and I love it! The food menu is simple but the price is fair for decent savory food. We ordered the patty melt and steak! We enjoyed both! It is really the combination of the vegetables, cream cheese, and meat! Best patty melt I have tasted so far. The cut of the steak is pretty big and is good for the price! Customer service is great! The place may give an old vibe but it is clean as well as the restroom! I do recommend this place if you are looking for a simple dinner, leaving the place with your stomach full and satisfied.

Dear Hubby, Sweet Granddaughter, and I were in La Canada Flintridge for another visit to Descanso Gardens. We wanted something simple for dinner. Last time we went to Panera Bread, which was a let-down from previous visits, so we decided to try something new. Yelp reviews lead us to Magpie's Grill. I was expecting something a little more modern. What we found was an old school neighborhood kind of place. Because there was a football game on, DH wanted to sit in the bar area where various TVs were on. The menu was extensive - just about anything "American" or American-adjacent was offered. We decided to split an order of calamari, and a hot pastrami sandwich. DH thought that wouldn't be enough, so he also added a sampler app platter. We ended up taking food home! SG wanted mac & cheese. The kids meal portion was very generous, and even though the 4 year-old tucked in well to her meal, there were still leftovers for another lunch. Kids meals also come with a beverage included. Our server was very helpful and did all the things a good waiter is supposed to do. He promptly asked for our drink order, and offered to answer questions about the menu. Once the food came out of the kitchen he checked back on us to see if everything was okay / did we need anything else? He plied us with extra napkins, and brought to-go containers. He was very present, and we appreciated that. Foodwise, the calamari was prepared very well. It became filling, and when the other items arrived we abandoned it and brought the rest home. The pastrami sandwich was very good. I didn't realize that they normally crown the meat with cheese, so I had to peal off the layer and give it to DH, as I am off milk products. Still, the rest of the bread, pastrami, lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo made for a great tasting sandwich. The only down side was that the fries were a little undercooked. We would consider returning when in the area again. I could see this as a comfort food kind of staple for locals.

Decent food and friendly staff. The omelette felt underwhelming as there was very little cheese and chili pepper, but tasted decent. The fresh fruit was not ripe enough.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Private Club

They also love the chicken fingers, the fries are phenomenal and the chocolate lava cake is a must. As for my husband and I, he says the French dip sandwich is the best he's had in his life. And he is a French dip connoisseur! He's tried all the regular L.A staples--Philippe's, Cole's, etc.... But he says nothing compares to The Proper. Their burger is also wonderful. I've also had several of their fish dishes and have enjoyed them all. And you must try the warm butter cake. I'm normally a chocolate lover, but I dream about the butter cake from The Proper. I'm not a big drinker, but husband loves their Old Fashions and they have a fully stocked bar with lots of specialty cocktails as well. We love sitting in the long booths, which can comfortably fit our party of 2 adults, 2 kids and often 2 grandparents as well. The service is always wonderful and everyone is very friendly. My only complaint about The Proper is that I hate the parking lot. It's very tight and people don't pull up far enough. But that's a small price to pay for this wonderful local gem.

Overall, we had a pleasant experience, but we ultimately left feeling that the prices just didn't match the overall value. The restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere. The décor is modern, clean, and thoughtfully designed, making it feel much more inviting than you might expect from a restaurant located in a strip mall. It has a comfortable, upscale vibe that makes for a nice dinner setting. The only downside was that we were seated directly underneath an air conditioning vent, which made it uncomfortably cold throughout our meal. For dinner, I ordered the short rib sandwich, and my wife had the three-taco plate, which included chips and tortilla soup. We didn't order any appetizers, desserts, or alcoholic beverages--just our entrées. After tax and tip, our total came to over $80. I completely understand that restaurant prices have increased over the past few years, and I'm willing to pay more for a great meal and experience. However, this felt like pricing I'd expect from a high-end standalone restaurant rather than a casual neighborhood spot. To be fair, the food was good. Everything was well prepared, flavorful, and enjoyable. I don't think the issue is the quality of the food--it's simply the value. While we enjoyed our meal, nothing stood out enough to justify the premium pricing, especially considering there are many other restaurants nearby offering similar quality at a lower price point. I'm glad we gave it a try, and I can see why people enjoy the ambiance and atmosphere. Unfortunately, the overall value just wasn't there for us, and because of that, I don't think we'll be returning.

Now, our waiter Caroll was probably of the hardest workers I've ever had the pleasure of being served by, and it's almost comedic that I couldn't leave my drink empty for longer for a few seconds before it was infact, topped up. Bottomless drinks really do exist here. On top of that, caroll suggested strawberry lemonade and passion fruit ice tea in lieu of my normal Arnold Palmer that's my go to on account of being out of lemonade. The resulting concoction I've lovingly dubbed: The Susie Summers. Official ratios still being tweaked but: 40% Strawberry lemonade 60% Passion Fruit Iced Tea Garnish with a lemon wedge and sprig of mint. While I had the Black Cow burger it wasn't of paricular note, it was pleasant BUT I did order it medium well, out of an abundance of caution for a new place. I'm very confident that trying it medium rare will likely improve the beef flavor. Overall a tasty burger regardless. However, the chicken pot pie my partner ordered was plated beautifully and had a wonderful puff pastry atop a very savory and delightfully seasoned filling. I definitely think it was a show stopper. I even asked Caroll to surprise me with a random dessert, and let me tell you, the Salted Caramel Apple Cheesecake is what dreams are made of. Very nicely sweet with a filling to knock your socks off. Oh the joys of new sights and smells. Cheers!
