This is a review for a pedicure I got at the salon. I had a good experience. I think the lady who did the pedicure was Sally. She took her time doing the nails and the rest of the good. I appreciated that I didn't feel rushed and it was a relaxing Sunday afternoon for me. I felt so relaxed at the end of it and was ready to take a nap. They should be able to handle more than ONE customer at a time. When I arrived, there was one person getting a mani pedi, so both technicians were helping her. They told me to pick a color and take a seat. I sat there for 30 minutes and waited for them to finish. Then they both proceeded to cut my cuticles to bleed. Unacceptable. I should've read the reviews before stepping foot into this establishment, big mistake on my part. I went in today and there were three techs and one client in the salon. They asked me to pick a color, which I did quickly, and then they made me wait over 10 mins before coming to help me. The lady who greeted me at the door (not the one who did my nails) grabbed a visibly dirty towel with nail polish and cuticle cuttings from another station and moved it over to mine. Another tech came over to grab the color I wanted & said "black?" Im a condescending tone. I said, "no, green". (I wanted to surprise my husband with his favorite color) They tried to give me a brighter green than the one I picked, and it wasn't until I told them the number on the bottle that they grabbed the right one. The tech, Wendy, grabbed a bin with soiled tools and I should've walked out right then & there. She must've felt my tense vibes and was rude the entire time. I would've left but my nails were so badly chipped from when I got them done 3 weeks prior and I have an important meeting tomorrow. Once she started actually doing my nails, she used an electric filer to buff the old gel before soaking them in acetone. This caused her to hurt me a few times and made my nail uneven. She also over buffed my nails and was really rough when removing my cuticles and she made me bleed. Huffing and puffing the entire time. The end result was lumpy and uneven. Now I have to go elsewhere to get them redone. What a waste of time and money. They also give you attitude if you don't have cash for the tip. 3.5/5 I've been here twice now, both times for gel manicures. It's walkable distance from where I live and my roommates and I enjoyed the convenience of walking over for mani/pedis. Their prices are also better than most SF nail salons in my opinion. The first time I went, I would have given this place a 4/5. The second time I would give it a 3/5. The first time I thought the ladies here were friendly and efficient with their service. They treated my nails well and painted the color on nicely. I didn't experience any chipping and they didn't hurt / cut my cuticles. We also experienced no wait for a walk-in and they took us pretty late. The second time was it as good for an experience. They were busy and didn't give us a wait time. I waited about an hour plus for my gel manicure, which I would have understood if they were able to give me a better heads up about. They also almost painted my nails the wrong color twice. On top of that, I was told I could get a simple leaf design (I showed them a picture) initially but then later said the lady who took over for me didn't know how to do designs. What I was asking for wasn't even complicated too and I only wanted it on two fingers total. To top everything off too, she cut my cuticles twice. I understand mistakes happen but this was a lot. Next time, I want to try somewhere else. Definitely wouldn't recommend if they're busy but they give you better care and service when they're less busy for sure. read more

I got to choose the length and shape of what I wanted. Throughout the appointment they would keep checking in if I was satisfied with the results. My mother-in-law and I had a disappointing experience here. The service was extremely slow and of poor quality. Our visit lasted over two hours, despite showing up when the salon was completely empty. They did not parallel process the mani pedis, which made the process take forever. The quality was also disappointing. My mother in law was injured during her manicure - her cuticle was overcut, and one day later, is still red and inflamed. Further, despite waiting over half an hour for our nails to dry and being told we were good to go, my MIL's nail polish got smudged shortly after our departure. In general, we did not feel well taken care of. My manicurist did not use nail polish remover to remove my chipped nail polish, and seemed to take a short cut by simply buffing off the old polish. Also, during our pedicures, they did not spend much time sloughing off the dead skin on our heels. Additionally, my MIL's manicurist made her hold her hands in a strange and unusual position both during the manicure as well as during the drying process, which she found painful. I used to come here for beauty services, it's close to my hood. So when I break a nail, I can pop in for a little uppa-grade. I found that it always isn't convenient, depending on which services I get. These ladies know their Manicures and Pedicures. I will also give them waxing, since I get my brows done occasionally there. But when it comes to Acrylic and Gel Nails, I am always left feeling less than satisfied. I was greeted as soon as I entered and got started with this lovely lady after waiting for about 5 mins. I needed to get my nails done for an event and this was the closest place who does acrylic nails. The lady who did my nails was nice and thanked me for waiting for about 20 minutes. I told her it was no problem at all. There were only two ladies working and there were two additional people waiting with me. With that said, I felt bad for the customers who were already there because they were rushing their services since we were waiting. Fast forward to when I sat down to get my nails done. By this time, there weren't people waiting anymore so my service wasn't as rushed as the ones before me. So I showed her a picture of how I wanted to get them done hoping she'll get the shape I want. I asked for a ballerina shape and it was nothing like it! I kept on trying to tell her and showing her a picture but it didn't turn out anything like what I wanted. It wasn't even close to it. The more and more I kept trying to explain how I wanted it, the worse it got. It seemed like she was getting annoyed with me even though I was polite about asking and explaining. At this point, we're more than 1.5hrs in and I got so tired of trying. I settled because we had a dinner to go to. The acrylic wasn't shaped smooth or evenly. She didn't even polish the color nicely. I live in this neighborhood and I wanted to love this place but it will be a hard pass for now. I came around noon on a Wednesday and I was the only one there. I got a pedicure and a gel manicure. It took around maybe 1.5 hrs overall. Both ladies who worked on me were super nice but the lady who did my nails was very demanding. If you get both done. Someone works on your nails while you're in the spa pedicure chair. The pedicure was average. She didn't spend enough time on my heels and they're still rough. The color took a while to dry and instead of using a fan they used a heater on it so there were moments of uncomfortable hotness. My hands look great but I tried to ask her for a fading glitter look and she didn't understand so I have an awkward glitter pinky nail now. She was super rough with my cuticles too. 2 of my nails we're bleeding. They do have a stellar selection of nail polishes and towards the end of my service, the whole salon was filed so maybe I'm missing something? read more

I would like to give Bernal Heights Nails the 5 stars it deserves, and an additional 5 stars each for my beloved nail handlers: Mai, Thuy and Phon, along with 5 stars each for the gracious owners Helen and Kendy. So if my math is correct, that's, ummm, 30 stars. Now I want to add Lucy, Hoa, Tam and Uyen at 5 stars each (of course), so the grand star total is 50 stars, plus one for good luck, and this salon deserves all 51 stars. As a regular customer for some time many years ago, I walked into the salon a woman who worked there called out my name, followed by the word 'oi.' Since that day, I am greeted by my name + 'oi,' which means 'yea.' She told me this means she is happy to see me. Yea! I get the mani-pedi spa and sit in a really great massage chair; you cannot beat the price or the service. I will begin with Mai. Like the others on this list, Mai is very popular and in high demand. She's a gentle, luminous soul with a smile that lights up the room. Her five stars count for the attention she lavishes upon me, along with her grace and elegance. Mai is wise and beautiful, inside and out. She also does waxing, and is so gentle I think will call her Sweet Painless Mai. It is easy say the same things about Thuy as I have written about Mai, but Thuy is special in her own right. Although she is not old by any stretch, she's been at the nail game for many years. You can see ample evidence of this in how carefully she clips everything that simply must go, and babies what should stay. A very clean and gentle manicure, any way you want it. I think I will call her Clean Gentle Thuy. It's not all sweet and serious at this nail salon. Meet Phon, the darling of the place. Phon has new boyfriends every time she does my nails. These men come and go, and not because they choose to do so. Thirty-one-year-old Phon is very particular about her men, and so far she just hasn't found the right one. If you are a man in your 30s, ask for her. Phon misses her mother, and she designated me as her SF mom; she calls me 'ma,' and I don't mind it one bit. I could be her ma; I'm old enough and she's young enough. Phon is conscientious and loving to all, and she works with great precision. I am going to call her Attentive Loving Phon. Lucy, Hoa, Tam and Uyen are all excellent too. I seem to come in when the women above are working, but I went in today they were all there. The place was very busy, and they were all in high demand. In fact I can see anyone at this place walk out looking forward to my next visit. The owners, Helen and Kendy, run Cortland Nails down the street, Noe Valley and Angel Nails in (guess, Noe Valley), 5 Star Nails and Glen Park Nails in (take a guess). Clearly they have been successful in the nail world in San Francisco. They carry vegan nail polish, and run a clean, sanitized business. If you could see this review the way I see it, it would be framed in a lacquered shiny red background. Red is the hottest of the warm colors. It reflects the passion of the women who work at this salon, and the happiness you will experience when you leave the salon. Red is love, it's a rose, and in some places it stands for joy, purity and celebration. In Russia red means beautiful and in China it symbolizes good luck. In Thailand, where thee women were born, the red in the flag means Thailand's 'nation.' So join the nation of Bernal Heights nails. I hope to see you there. read more

I hate nail salons in this city and have tried so many, the good ones are overpriced, the other ones are either so-so or just bad, making me regret my experience. Then I typed Nail Salon and Mission into Yelp Search and here came your 5 star reviews. Even my beloved "The Nail Shop" in Lake Merritt has never been as much fun unless I was with a girlfriend. These ladies actually engage with you if you're open to it. In fact, I went on the Saturday of the Pink Party during Pride weekend. Two weeks before I had gone to The Nail Shop in OAK and requested a french pedicure. This caused lots of low tones in Vietnamese by my manicurist and lots of laughter and nasty looks by her compatriots. Not here! Here the older lady goaded "But not for the hands? No nothing? C'mon, look special for the weekend" I wanted to hug her. Instead I tipped generously, which was not hard to do since the prices are so low. Bernal Heights Nails Care compounded my feeling that, if I move in with a boyfriend and get a dog, this would be the neighborhood to do it in. I used to LOVE coming to this place when it first opened years ago, before they brought in those huge spa chairs. They did a great job for cheap and it didn't hurt like other places. Plus they were very friendly and made me feel so cute whenever they called me "Baby." I stopped going because frankly, getting my nails done is more of a luxury than anything else, and back then, as a struggling college student, I didn't have the money to spare. But I do now, and because of those wonderful memories, I recently decided to come back. Now, I absolutely HATE this place. They seem to always be rushing to help the person at the front door who is asking if they can get whatever service done. So the salon workers shuffle customers around, from one chair to the next, to make room for this new gal at the front door. Then they talk amongst themselves on who is going to help this new customer, and you better hope that your mani/pedicurist isn't the one who has to leave you to go help the new customer otherwise they will rush on your nails even more. And lets say you go on a slow day... it doesn't matter! They will still be rough and rush you out of there. There's an old lady who is particularly bad. She has to put on her eyeglasses whenever she works on nails and i swear she doesn't care if she hurts you or not. She is so rough when filing and just cuts away at my cuticles until they bleed. I said "ouch!" out-loud a couple of times and that just seemed to irritate her and she cut even more cuticle off! And the shape of my nails were uneven and rough around the edges. Not to mention the horrible paint job she does. It would already be chipped and peeling by the next day. I want to FEEL pampered when I spend money to get pampered. I do not want to spend money only to be tortured and mutilated. After a couple of times going back to "give them another shot" these past couple of months, I do not think they deserve my business and will not ever be coming back. I am usually not a fan of having my nails done, but I actually have tried to go more often because it is just time consuming. My issue has always been that they try to make my nails either a shape I don't want (I have naturally long strong nails... yes, I know you are hating on me right now) but they will always try to give it that square look... it is just not me. Not here... they did their thing... I had no bubbles in my polish (which for some reason always happens to me when I go to a nail salon! ). Tried my first French Manicure ever... I know... what took me so long. The pedicure was great too. Went here two days before my wedding day, wanting full set acrylic french manicure. I left with my cuticles bleeding BC the lady was using the electrical sanding machine to close to my cuticles. I told her several times I was in pain and to stop. Needless to say I left with bumpy bubbles in my nails, very disappointed. I went in the next day and explained how upset I was and demanded a partial refund, since six of my fingers had scabbed cuticles. YOU SEE: i grew up in Bernal Heights and loved bernal heights nail salon UNTIL...their files and tools are NOT clean! I have witnessed on many occasion go from one customer to another without starilizing ANYTHING! Also, they dont know when to stop...I mean usually when your toes are bleeding because they have been filed too far down thats a sign, but they just dont stop...its cheap, but its definately not worth the gangreen you will get in a few months! BE AWARE...and carefull. i sugguest going across the street to the hair/nail salon where all their stuff is brand new and you see it come out of a package every time they use it. read more

I will not go back. I usually come to either this nail salon or Cortland Nail Salon because they are quick and inexpensive. But my last experience here made me feel icky. They were pushy with upgrading services and also with receiving cash tips. I finally agreed to the extra massages to shut the pushy ladies up! And then the massages were weak and half hearted. I tried to leave a basic tip on a credit card, and they laid the biggest guilt trip. I totally understand that they get their tips later on the card, but a tip is not mandatory! I hate this place now. And I won't be going to their sister nail salon either. Screw this place. read more

Whenever I am in the bernal neighborhood, I have always gotten my nails done here, but never again! My sister and I just wanted to have a nice day together and get our nails done, but no! First off, they had no hot water for the pedicures, and we were not even informed of that until it was too late. My sister needed her fake nails removed, so the lady just hastily popped off one of her nails. She then proceeded to use that nail as leverage to pop off the rest! I could have done this at home, it is not what I expect when paying at a spa. Not to mention she was also on her cell phone the whole time, and even actually scratched my sister. We also simply wanted to sit together, but one of the ladies rudely said no, then pushed my sister into a seat at the opposite end of me. During the pedicure, they nagged for upgrades. I had to say no over five times before the lady gave up. When it came to pay, I paid for both spa pedicures, leaving a 20% tip in cash (they insisted for cash). Then they were obviously unhappy with the tip, as they offered to allow me to charge my card for more tip. Are you KIDDING?! I work in the service industry, and I know it's hard, but the way we were treated was completely rude. Our toe nails look alright, but it was not worth the rudeness we had to endure. read more
