I love BBQ and was visiting a friend nearby and stopped in before I left town. So glad I did! I had a pork sandwich and it was a large serving and delicious. I also tried one of the ribs, next time I'm in I'll order the rib dinner. They do take out so you can call ahead and order. While I was in a few people and stopped in for take out. The service was great, the woman at the front was very nice and Berry was very hospitable. 5 stars for friendly service and nice people. It is a smaller place and has a security door but once you're in it's definitely more inviting. I left with a full happy belly. Definitely recommend. I'll be back! read more

Too hot to cook or really eat, but gettin hangry so after hearing about a new place for food I dropped by to grab dinner. Take a bite to stop the tummy rumble and WHOA...wait up...hang on...let's have another bite of that brisket...DANG...that was REALLY TASTY...no, REALLY, good. The brisket is so tender I had to pay attention because it falls apart off the fork 'on the way up'. Sauce is SO nice. Some hidden flavors in there, so again, gotta pay attention to catch all the surprises. Beans...yes! Again with 'some flavors' hiding in the sauce of the beans. Corn muffins? oh I do love cornbread and these did not disappoint. I've only taken carry out once here and it was a couple of rib dinners. In hindsight I should have just got one as there dinner portions are huge! Let me say it again, the portions are huge. If ratings are based on quantity, then Berry's is a solid 5 stars. And Berry is great guy and loved the homeyness as it's like I was in his kitchen sharing some BBQ. Just needs a couch and serve quarts of beer and it's going to be good. As for the BBQ it was on the overly wet side smothered with BBQ sauce where it's just over the top for me. I'd recommend getting your ribs dry and adding on the BBQ later. I'm still debating on Berry's and need to try a pulled pork sandwich and see if that hits the spot. The smell of the place once I enter is enough to set my mouth to salivating. The guy who owns the place is pretty friendly, and he seems to remember regulars. Hell, the regulars sometimes stay a while, which can be a disadvantage to you if you're planning to eat in. The place is tiny. Excellent ribs. That's all I can say for the moment, as it's all I've ever ordered. It's the sauce that makes 'em, really -- if you order these to go, ask for extra sauce, as it doesn't tend to last if you end up with leftovers. I reiterate, the place is a hole in the wall quite literally and if you drive too fast either way down Ambaum you may very well miss it. The parking's a nightmare. Best barbeque in Seattle! I had not found a place where I could get consistently good barbeque/soul food until I walked into Berrys. They tend to always have collard greens and peach cobbler-is this heaven? I am soooo happy our friend told us about this place or we would have missed it. Get ready for BBQ paradise! About 8pm on Saturday evening we were chatting with a neighbor and I mentioned I could really use some ribs and wished there was someplace good close by. She looked at me incredulously and said. "Seriously? You've never been to Berry's? It's right down the street. You have to go there." I checked the time and asked if it was still open. She said yes and we hopped in the car and drove, following her directions. Now I've lived in this neighborhood for more than 2 years and had never noticed this tiny hole-in-the wall place. It's really easy to miss as it's small and hidden in a little village of shops. The interior is amazingly cozy and homey for the building it's in. The place is decorated with posters and relics of planes and such. The seating is family style with large wooden tables and windsor chairs. The scent filling the air was intoxicating... a sweet smokey smell that made my stomach grumble happy comments. The friendly girl at the counter greeted us as we walked in and happy customers nodded their smiles our way. I felt as though I'd been coming here for years. We ordered our food and had a seat at the table while we waited for our take out. They had the rodeo on the television. For some reason I enjoyed that. A few minutes later we were presented with our bags of food - an order of ribs and an order of sliced pork BBQ - each with a side of potato salad and beans. Smelled heavenly. We could barely wait to go home and eat. As we walked out the door the customers there smiled warmly and said, "Have fun! You're gonna love it!" (Yes, this really happened). We got home and couldn't even put the food on a plate. We ate straight out of the box because it smelled so good. The sliced pork was dressed with thick red sweet BBQ sauce (Kansas style I believe). It was divine! The ribs were amazing - so many layers of BBQ goodness to taste... I could taste the dry rub under the sauce. The sauce itself was complex and less sweet than the pork sauce with a little bit of spice. (St. Louis style perhaps?) Whatever it was, it was nothing short of delicious. In fact I was so thrilled with my dinner I almost called them to say THANK YOU! I've never had that experience with takeout before. What stopped me? My fingers were covered in that sauce and I couldn't use my phone. When we finally got to the sides, they too were perfect. Spicy yummy beans and sweet potato salad (much like I'd had in NC) complimented the meal perfectly. So here's the kicker. This place is cheap! Damn it... I hate having to write this review, but here it goes. Berry's has been on my list of places to try for a couple of years, and tonight I just happened to drive by when the white cow was parked out front. The cow, as other Yelpers have pointed out, is the sign that Berry's is open for business. My first step into the joint had me hoping for some real deal Q. Berry was behind the counter watching the football game on a TV surrounded by years of Seahawks and other memorabilia. It's a tiny space that reminded me in many ways of places I've experienced in New Orleans. Barry was very friendly and I ordered two $16 beef/pork combos to go. Twenty minutes later I was home dishing up dinner for my partner and myself... we were excited, and the food looked great. There was so much food we decided one combo was more then enough for the two of us for one meal - and decided to save the rest for tomorrow. I should point out that each combo has pulled pork and beef brisket, with a side of baked beans and potato salad. And now let me explain my opening statement. First, I'm a major potato salad connoisseur... if it's on the menu and 'homemade' I want to try it. Well, this tater salad was not homemade. I'm guessing Resers. Enough said. Second, was the baked beans. As others have already said in their reviews, these beans are nothing more then the common canned variety. And finally, the main attraction. The BBQ! It looked sooo gooood. So imagine my disappointment when I found the beef packed with fat and gristle, and the pork dry and unsavory. The flavor was just not good. I could not place it. Was it the smoke? Was it the sauce? Maybe the combination? Whatever it was, I found myself scraping my plate (and the second combo meal) into the trash. I'm happy to be writing this review because I'm eating great bbq from Berry's but I'm sad because the original owner, Rufus Berry, passed 2 years ago. He was a wonderful man who made everyone that walked through the door feel welcome and appreciated. The last time I spoke with him was 6 months after he'd had to close the place, he told me he had cancer but when he felt better he'd be back. Hurts that it's not berry but his sister has re-opened the restaurant and she know how to cook bbq. Every bit as good as when Berry was making it. The sides were great, cornbread, beans, and especially the mac and cheese were delicious. I had the rib tip special, best rib tips I've had in a long time. Perfect amount of fat and meat, chewy and tender. My cat likes them too. Sauce was good, more on the sweet side with a hint of spiciness. We walked through the door of this teeny BBQ joint and were greeted by Berry himself, as well as a tableful of customers who were clearly satisfied. There are only ten chairs squeezed into the main room, so if you plan on eating there you'll probably end up sharing space with other folks. I ordered the pork sandwich, which comes with either cole slaw or potato salad, and my mom ordered the ribs. After the first bite of pork a near-orgasmic sigh issued forth from my mouth. There were layers of flavor and the rub Berry uses was well-balanced by the sauce (of which there was the perfect amount). The ribs were tender, the meat falling off the bone. Mom said the 2 sides she had were quite tasty. They forgot to give her the cornbread that was included, so they gave us two pieces at the end to make up for it. Came in the other day after work to try this place out for the first time. First off I will point out as other reviews have that dinning in could be a challenge, there is one large communal table (ten top), and one other two top. So I personally would recommend always planning for the to-go order. I ordered both ribs and brisket, after asking how big the proportions are. The woman at the counter said they are good sized but seemed hesitant since I was ordering for two people. I can tell you it's been two days and I just finished the ribs! Heard about this place from my neighbor and I was not disappointed. I got 2 sandwiches with sides for ~$14 out the door. I tore into the pulled pork when I got home and it was flavorful and quality. The cole slaw and beans were tasty as well, I don't really even like cole slaw usually, but this was real good. I was so full from eating the sandwich, I still felt full when I woke up the next day. I had the chicken sandwich the following evening, along with the rest of the sides and the sandwich was delicious, despite sitting in my fridge for a day or so. Don not get fooled by the average rating, this place isn't very good. My wife is from the south so I've had plenty of exposure to great BBQ in various states (TX, NC, VA to name a few). This just isn't up to par: chewy pulled pork. Beans with an unoriginal, limited flavor. The corn bread was decent however. The only rationale for the high ratings is people from the PNW don't know. One of my coworkers brought sum Berry's to office & I've been hooked since! After I brought ribs home for my wife, she's a believer now 2 ~_~ Heck, even our cat (who NEVER goes on kitchen counters) was caught dragging a bone 'cross the floor w/sauce alllll over his coat hahah! I'll say this, after picking up my order & driving for 'bout (3) minutes... the pure smell of smokiness, sweetness & love comes wafting out! Let me start by saying I will definitely come back here for BBQ cravings. So why the 3 stars? Well, because I'm from Texas and I know good BBQ. Not sure if it's a Texas "thing" but I was kind of disappointed when my beef brisket sandwich had nothing but BBQ sauce slathered brisket. I was hoping for mustard, onions, and pickle up in there. But it did have a lot of meat, maybe about an inch of it. I did take a lot out though because I don't like the fatty part. The BBQ sauce isn't bad. The meat itself though, pretty dry. I compare it to left over brisket reheated in the microwave. Because I have done that in real life and yeah it's still good but it doesn't taste like it did when it was fresh. The coleslaw I got as my choice of side was hard to finish. It tasted like coleslaw mix with a bunch of mayo. Couldn't taste salt or pepper or anything else. It could be spiced up with some sweetness in the mix, like pineapple. But again I don't know if that's just a Texas thing. But let's pretend I'm not from Texas and part of a family that bbqs all the time down there, then I would give this place 5 stars on the sandwich, 3 on a the coleslaw. I've tried other places though and this one is the best and cheapest, like good BBQ should be... Not no $20 for 3 small Boney ribs like I've had in Seattle... After reading the great reviews for this spot I had to check it out. After a few hours of studying I came straight here. The place is small and resembles a antique store, no joke. I'm not really a rib person but decided to get that since it's the first thing on the menu. I had my food to go and that take out bag was so heavy. The ribs were great, sides were okay. The surprise was the cornbread when I had the butter with it, sooo good. The only bad part is that the cornbread just falls apart into crumbs. I like how they have the big 24 oz bottles of pop for only $1.50. I will definitely be back to try their brisket. read more

Man, I really wanted to like this place. Took us a couple of passes to find this little bbq joint next to the laundromat. Don't know how i missed the giant fiberglass cow in the back of the pickup out front. When we went in, we found Rufus "Berry" Berry sitting at the one large table in the whole place. The space reminded me of a man cave garage. Memorabilia cluttered the walls and model planes Berry collected during his career at Boeing hung from the ceiling. Berry is a sociable guy and we had some nice conversation about aircraft. My wife ordered the rib plate and I ordered the brisket sandwich. As sides, we had beans, corn bread and cole slaw. The servings of meat were ample and the sauce was outstanding. The ribs were just a tad on the fatty side, but they were pretty tasty. The brisket was unfortunately full of gristle, which made it impossible to bite through the sandwich. I wound up eating the meat with a fork, but unfortunately, much of it went to waste. The sides were decent. Berry has some great sauce, but he needs to trim the brisket more before putting it onto a bun. Despite this weak experience, I think I'd give this joint another shot if I was in the area and hope for a better outcome. read more

This "Hole in the Wall" is one GREAT Bar-B-Q Memphis style. I've traveled all of the US and this is one of the best. Barry is in the kitchen or at the front counter and has great stories to keep you entertained. There is one big communal table for 8 or 9 and a side table for 2 or 3 on stools. I discovered this place just by chance...I was in the parking lot at Costco and happened to see a door of a truck that said, 'Berrys BBQ'. I was intrigued as I thought I knew of every bbq joint in SEA - but I never heard of this place. A few months past and I finally decided to pick up some dinner and try this place...I went, I ate and its THE BEST BBQ in Seattle - no question. Berrys place is tucked away in the hood of Burien. Its a serious hole-in-the-wall and super small but the quality of the bbq is legit son! I ordered the ribs dinner and the wifey had the bbq pork dinner, we also tried the peach cobbler. The ribs were moist, flavorful, and falling off the bone. I could tell they slow slow smoked and cooked perfectly. The sauce was smokey and had just the right amount of tangy-ness. The bbq pork was also tasty - it came with less sauce but was just as good. And the portions..wow, can you say generous! My ribs had like half a rack and it came with a side of potato salad! Now while the bbq was on point the sides tasted like it was outta of a costco bucket and the peach cobbler was not impressive. But I could care less about the sides. The bbq is off the meat rack at this place. Do yourself a favor and go get this bbq from berry! P.S. I feel horrible. We bought a house near this place over a year ago and never made it in. We wanted something hearty and decided on BBQ. I remembered seeing this place and I am so glad we went in... The interior is small but cozy with an eclectic mix antiques and funky knick knacks. On top of that Berry is so amazingly friendly. It really felt like we had been going there for years. I ordered the ribs dish which was juicy and delicious. I'm an eater and I could not finish my dish. My fiance ordered the pork sandwich and it was huge and amazing. She loved it and left with only half of it eaten. We ordered a couple beers, ate dinner and had the great pleasure of talking with Berry. Came to settle to visit some friends and they told us about berry's BBQ. They said we were going to love this place and when we had the fall-off-the-bones rib for dinner we fell in love. They bbq sauce had a nice balance and wasn't over powering. The best part is that we got a WHOLE slab of ribs for under $40. That fed 4 adults for dinner and we had enough for lunch the next day. The owner seems like a wonderful man, but this is not good barbecue. Really disappointed - we were excited to try a new place out but honestly we should have looked closer at reviews so don't make the same mistake. My bf said if we lived closer he would drive back and complain bc the meat quality was very low, badly cooked, tough, no flavor - sides were ok but greens smelled funny and had literally no flavor. It's really hard to mess up greens! For those saying the cornbread is good - I dunno, ours was very hard and dry. I decided not to try the peach cobbler bc it looked burnt and reheated multiple times. Really sad that we spent money on this meal that mostly went in the compost :( read more

My wife and I tried Berry's the other day. We had the pulled pork sandwiches, beans, and potato salad. The pulled pork was to die for and very a generous amount, it is a mess to eat. The beans were very flavorful and the potato salad was good [I believe not home made] We tried Berrry's again several nights later and were served up a rib dinner and a pork dinner, both were very good but I liked the sandwich better. I make my owns ribs and I am very critical of others, I prefer short ribs and these were not so they have a bit more fat on them. All in all a very good place to eat. read more

When I saw the Anna Faris (actress) thanked Berry for his awesome BBQ, I knew I had to be in the right place. Berry has been there running his BBQ show for about 8 years, he says. I'm sure he's been Q-ing it up for a lot longer. Today, I had the beef brisket sandwich for lunch. That was fantastic. What was even more so was his BBQ sauce! I like a little zest and heavy tomato based sauce with just the right amount honey, molasses, etc. It was great. I also ordered some rib tips to go (for later.) From appearance, it was looking mack daddy delish! I left this to-go stuff in my truck which I'm sure is gonna smell hella awesome. The rest of the menu is looking pretty standard. Ribs, chicken, pork, brisket. It's all good. What give this hidden gem it's charm is all the memorabilia. The memorabilia in this place puts TGIFridays and Applebees to shame. Berry has some autographs from some famous Hollywood actors (some of whom were once WA residents) and musicians. There's pictures of all his favorite people. He has a great assortment of license plates from all over the US. It's all great stuff. Worth a visit here for this alone almost. But the real dealio here is the BBQ. I think I may have found the BBQ I actually was looking for in this state (I used to live in U-t-a-h and Q-4-U was the best BBQ that I've found out of all western US states and BBQ joints I've been to). So I've gotten pretty picky. Texas, Memphis, St Louis style. I'm not sure what Berry's style is, maybe Southern BBQ style. Now some on here have complained about the sides not being homemade. All I can say is, WHO CARES. You're not eating at a BBQ for the sides. Besides, most restaurants serve sides that are already pre-made anyway. What's the big deal. Absolutely nothing. You're there for what the name says on the sign BBQ. I've shorted a star because I haven't tried all the food there yet. This is probably the best BBQ in the greater Seattle area, and the owner is an extremely nice, friendly guy. The ribs fall off the bone with only the slightest encouragement. This is the hallmark of perfectly cooked BBQ. The sauce, which is not spicy, has the perfect balance of sweet and smoky, and, of course, he doesn't use garbage like liquid smoke or dry smoke; no one who knows what they're doing would ever consider doing such a thing. The beans are unlike any BBQ baked beans I've ever eaten, but excellent nonetheless. They have a nice kick to them and are a little spicy. I'll definitely be back soon to try the pork sandwich and the smoked salmon corn chowder.
