I have been to Best cuts 4 times now, I have had 2 hair cuts, had my hair colored and highlighted twice and had my brows threaded once. Every time I leave the place happy and feeling pretty!! The two sisters are so sweet, knowledgeable and the shop is clean and bright. I heard about Best cuts from a client of theirs when I complimented her hair, and I get many compliments on my hair as well. Jila usually does the cutting while Mina is the expert on color. So, I had color done a few weeks ago and was not really sure about it. Mina and Jila told me to come back if I wasn't satisfied and after a week or so I realized that the color was too light (to me). I really wanted to like this place. It's not expensive, and it's local. But my experience has just sucked. I've been twice for my son's hair, the second time I didn't even stay to get my son's hair cut. The first time we went, my son wasn't seen until 30 min after his appointment time. The second time we went, I explained when I made the appointment that it was for a toddler. I asked when would be a good day/ time when it wasn't too busy, and Jila assured me there wouldn't be a problem on the day & time I booked. When I sat down at visit #2, there was only one other person waiting and three hair dressers, so I was optimistic we wouldn't have to wait long. However, over the course of the next 40 min, 2 hair dressers left for the day, and we still hadn't been seen. So we left. read more

I've been going to Jila and Mina for years. Jila cuts my hair and Mina colors it. I've always had a good experience here. I've tried many different hair salons on the peninsula and Mina is the only person who is able to highlight my hair and keep it looking healthy. Every other salon I've been to in this area always messes up the color. Jila is an expert at cutting hair and I swear my hair somehow magically looks twice as thick after she cuts it. I'm so glad I found this place! I always call for an appointment ahead of time and they're often able to see me the same day. I am bewildered by the 5 star rating for this business. I arrived on time for an appointment. I wanted a simple hair cut (a few inches off and layers that would give me more volume) and a deep conditioning treatment. The stylist barely looked at my hair and didn't ask me what I wanted until she was done washing my hair. While my conditioning treatment sat in my hair, my stylist took 3 customers, far too long of a wait time for me. Another stylist felt bad that I was waiting so she dried my hair for me and then the first stylist cut it dry! Not ok. Almost 2 hours after arriving I left with a haircut that was adequate but not well blended or shaped. read more

Today was my first visit to Best Cuts in Monterey- and I LOVE my hair! Honestly I had not given this place a chance before because I was leery of the name (not fair, I know). But my hair is fine and thin, and I was tired of paying $60+ dollars for a haircut when really all I need is a trim. I had heard this place was really affordable and thanks to the Yelp reviews, I decided to just go for it and make an appt for a cut and partial highlights. So glad I did! This is seriously the best haircut and highlights I've ever had- at the lowest price I've ever paid to get my hair done! They are extremely reasonable and they give excellent service. Jila cut my hair and her sister (Mina- I think) did the highlights. They listened to what I wanted, and delivered even more. You bet I'll be going back again, and again! Jila had the expertise to tame my long hair and give me the cut that I wanted: thinned out, with layers, and slightly shorter on the back. I'm visiting from out of town and desperately needed a haircut for an event I had to attend today. I was a bit nervous because you never know what to expect when you go to a new salon for the first time, and if you needed to look nice for something but were unwise enough to wait until the DAY OF to get your haircut, then you have to sort of hope and pray that things go well so that you don't have to explain to everyone why your hair looks like your 2 year old cut it. Well, I walked in this morning as soon as it opened and Jila greeted me pleasantly. When I told her I wanted a trim, she looked at my hair and immediately identified the type of haircut I had had before. I then showed her one sort of vague picture of what I wanted. She then proceeded to give me the quickest and BEST haircut of my life, all while keeping up a very interesting conversation about the world! When she was done, my hair looked EXACTLY how I had wanted it to look! It was as if she looked at the picture I had shown her, looked at my face, and cut the style I wanted but modified to suit my facial features. I think that's a quality only the best haircutters have. Most will look at a picture and try to copy it EXACTLY without regard to your facial structure instead. She got it EXACTLY the right length and she did it quickly and expertly. I was done in about 15 minutes or less. When I got back, my husband did a double take and said, "I can't believe you got such a good haircut that fast! Maybe I should go get a haircut right now too!" Not only that, but I have thick, coarse Asian hair that tends to be tricky to cut. I usually only go to Asian salons to get haircuts if I can, just because if a stylist doesn't know how to cut Asian hair, it can turn out pretty poorly. Jila worked in Thailand as a stylist for some years, and she KNOWS HOW TO CUT ASIAN HAIR, for any of you who might need that. She even explained to me the difference and how important it is to cut it EXACTLY right with no mistakes because mistakes show in Asian hair. There to me is the sign of someone who knows their craft well - when they can articulate what it is that sets various situations apart and how they address each kind of situation. Jila is AMAZINGLY talented as a hairstylist, and very kind and sweet as well. The prices are more than reasonable. I was so impressed with her work. The salon is clean and friendly, which is usually a good sign. This is however not the place to go for a men's haircut, I seriously could of done better at super cuts, I asked for a high and tight fade with fingerlenth on top with the front of my hair longer and shorter towards the back. I put up with the tugging and pulling (a sure sign they don't cut mens hair) eventually they switched the clippers and it was smooth sailing, they cut the top with scissors and thinned my hair, used clippers towards the back and then, out of no where, used the same size clippers for the rest of my hair! If i wanted that i would of asked for that, I always look at my stylist hands to determine the length of my hair, trust me her fingers were larger than a #8. I waited to get cleaned up and told her i didn't understand why she did it, another worker (I don't think they earned the title of stylist) told me it would look longer in a week, I told her, my hair doesn't know where to grow longer and it all grows at about the same rate. They did offer to "fix it" in two weeks, I declined. I payed. I look like a kid, i used to give myself haircuts this good. I run a business and need to look the part. If you need a buzz cut i guess it not bad. Gentlemen this place sounds like a good idea but it is not! Wait for an appointment at pistons and pearls, Dominga at Colors and Curls in Castroville, i made the mistake of coming here and payed the price, don't waste your time here (something you can't get back). read more

Was looking for a stylist for quite a while, saw the reviews on yelp, called, & Sam took me in 15 minutes! She greeted me warmly & sincerely. Sam is wonderful from her personality to her sincere caring for the customer. Plus, she assessed my hair by just looking at me & she is so good technically that this was the first time anyone ever said that (even after feeling my hair). Her technique rates right up with top notch specialists &, in my opinion, there was only 1 of her caliber on the Peninsula & he moved years ago. The only thing was that rates are not posted (at least I did not see them) &, reading the yelp reviews I thought the rates were similar to GreatCuts & SuperCuts (about $15-20). As it turns out, $15 is for any man's cut, but women's cuts are from $30-50. That was a surprise. If it weren't for the money, I would say I found "the" stylist (Sam). I may go back but not as frequently. I guess I may have others follow (if they can) her cut & then go to her once in a while. She has clients that she cut hair for when they were toddlers & now, as married people, are bringing their kids in to her. That is how much people think of her & her cuts! read more
