My long hair got butchered! I had waist long hair and the assistant to the owner Bode, Dallie, she cut my hair practically shoulder length!!! It was completely uneven, and she even blow dry my hair and decided to cut it again because she couldn't get it even. She didn't cut straight to began with!!! She fumbled endless trying to section my hair, got her comb stuck and wrapped with my hair. There is no way she could have passed her beauty school!!! I paid the $83 and cried in my car! This salon used to be great! I can't believe they hired someone who should not be cutting hair! She didn't measure properly and didn't use a clean comb when she drop her comb on the floor. I know I should have said something, but I wanted to be polite and give her a chance. (She literally picked the comb, put it in her drawer under her wallet, than push the comb under her wallet to appear like she was getting a clean comb. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to embarrass her.) I have straight, waist long hair, no hairstylist ever had a hard time cutting my hair. I wish Johnny was still there, or even the the really young girl. But I guess the good ones left. I ended going to Great Clips to get my hair fixed! All the hairstylist there saw all the mess-ups and unevenness she made on my straight hair!!! This was the first time I think I've ever left a salon coming in to touch up my roots and leaving with roots. So I came in for my roots as I have a full highlight. Not only was I there for five hours but my hair had an orange tint at the top from the stylist trying to lift it, and then the regular color of my roots that I had come in to get done. A two toned root. Nor did she even touch the back. The stylist told me herself she wasn't sure why she couldn't get my roots to lift. She said to call the salon so she could fix it that week. I got a call from the stylist, Marissa, saying the owner wanted me to pay to get it fixed. She said that she was going to fix it that day, and she was going to call with a time. I never got a call back. I called the salon back two hours later and told the owner about the situation, he said my stylist had left. (????) I was surprised as I was waiting for her to call me with a time to come in. So I was given another day to come in. The new day I was coming in, I got a call that it wouldn't work due to the weather being problematic. It's been two weeks now since the cancellation to fix my hair, so I sent a message to schedule. I paid $400 for these services and have NEVER received a worse haircut then the one I received there. While living in Monterey a few years ago and as I was getting my hair cut and color in a nearby rather nice salon , I overheard that Oya was a great salon. I decided to walk in one day to check it out. Brian , who happens to be the proprietor, was at the front and greeted me. After a pleasing impromptu consultation, he fit me in around his morning appointments. Brian outstandingly cut my rather difficult straight and thick hair which disappointingly Is usually beyond the capability of many stylists. He completely highlighted my transitioning to mostly grey hair to lovely, realistic and warmer tones subtlety blended which minimized the heretofore dreadful harsh distinction of grey roots as they appeared as he had promised. Not sure exactly how he managed all of it and tied it all together, but his talent/technique allows for a far more gentle appearance of roots making it so much easier to maintain the color continuity needed when you lose your natural color. All this was accomplished quite expertly and efficiently and I walked out of Oya that first day with a gorgeous cut and color. Problems solved. I have consistently enjoyed the absolutely spectacular hair cut every single time. Rare to find. I have moved from Monterey and still , a few years later, continue to make the the drive up to Monterey from San Luis Obispo for my hair services as it is well worth the time and effort. Always a pleasure to be in this pleasant and professional salon. Everybody i have been in contact with always gives great effort toward the experience. So I got my hair cut and treated by lily today. I wish I took a before and after picture because my hair was a MESS! Chemical breakage with different lengths everywhere and super dry. Also I told her I box dyed my hair 2 weeks prior and I got the keratin Straightening done on my hair. She took all this into consideration and adjusted my treatment. She suggested a treatment that starts with an "O" for $40 and my hair loved it! Then she cut and styled my hair for $55 (honestly the cut alone I would have paid double). She truly worked a miracle on my hair that I thought had no hope! Def, recommend Lily to any woman that thinks her hair is beyond hopeless. The secret oasis of the Monterey Bay! I came here and got my hair fixed by Bonnie! I use the term 'fixed' specifically because she is amazing. Before coming in I've never been to a salon. I've never really known how to take care of my hair, I kinda just winged it and hoped for the best. Bonnie is fantastic in both working with what YOU want and what SHE thinks you need. She suggested a dry shampoo and a fine hair shampoo for me that work amazingly well on my hair. The ambience of the salon is very upscale and LA-like. They serve wine to customers, so feel free to grab a glass while you have your hair done. The experience is almost more spa-like than anything else. A male trim came out to be $40, but I definitely spent $100 on product. But it was worth the cost. My hair looks great now and I've already booked my next appointment; once you come in once, bang trims are free for life. When you go in, make sure to ask for Bonnie! Once while Mom had life or death surgery in chomp, I came in asking for the same color purple as Cher from the night before Grammy, and a painted on summery bubble motif like in The Paper Moon greeting card--- how obscure, and then I saw the lady who I knew could do it- turned out she's more a personal assistant to the owner but I got absolutely everything how I asked. They pour you some champagne and get to work, creating, literally, unique high-fashion. Artwork. Oya is the most savvy salon the 831 has with nice people. I have been living in Monterey for a year. I lived in PR most of my life and 6-years on the East Coast (DC and NY). I love Monterey, but one of my biggest complains is related to customer service --it is so hard to get an appointment (either medical practitioner or stylists). In PR or DC, I could walk to a stylist with no appointment or with just a few days in advance and could get things done. Yes, it is demand and offer, but, I still didn't quite understand why is so hard to get a quick appointment in a tourist-laden town. 3-weeks it's an outrageous waiting time, especially for salon services. Since I moved here, I have been going to Euphoria, because it was recommended to me upon arrival. I am not saying the service was bad in Euphoria, but there wasn't anything exceptional about it, and most times I had to wait 2-3 weeks before I could get anything done. And I never could get an appointment during the weekends. (I have a full time professional job that requires me to be mostly 9-5, M-F in my office). I was in dire NEED of a change. I wanted a haircut and I had to wait 3 weeks to get an appointment in Euphoria. A lot of things happen in a 3-week timeframe , and I missed my last appointment because I was on work travel. My stylist wasn't very happy about it, as I could perceive after trying to contact her to reschedule (to be fair I admit it to be my fault). Yet, I feel the 3-week waiting period was too long. I walked into Oya not knowing what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. First up, the salon is amazing. It's modern looking, spacious and welcoming. The host was really nice and accommodating. They managed to get me in for both a haircut AND keratin on the same day, even though my stylist (Johnny) seemed pretty busy. He was FANTASTIC and very detail oriented. I also got assistance from another stylist (I never asked her name, bad on me), but she was super cool and very knowledgeable. I love the haircut and the customer service. I will be back (hopefully) as a regular (sorry Euphoria). Yes, perhaps it is a bit pricier than other salons in the area, but you pay for you get. Highly recommended. I was able to book an appointment last minute to have a blowout for a wedding. The shampoo station was the most comfortable shampoo I've ever experienced, the chair was level with the bowl and it didn't hurt my neck one bit. I showed the stylist a picture that I wanted, knowing it may not look exactly like it. I did mention that my hair doesn't hold curls well when used with a curling iron, although my hair is curly. And she wasn't able to add volume to the top because my hair is so long and thick, so it's to heavy, but I played with it at home and was able to add some. The end product was nice, but I wish the curls would've held better. I did like the products she used since they didn't make my hair crunchy or sticky. read more

My girlfriend has had her hair done here a few times and was very disappointed. She had to go back many times to have it fixed after poor color jobs. It is a very expensive place and the quality is just not there. Last week I needed my eyebrows done quick and popped in. Even though I would never go for hair, I was happy they could get me in on short notice and didn't think they could do wrong with my brows. BAD IDEA. The gal was sweet but she hacked my brows!! Let me begin by saying I have NEVER EVER written a review on anything until now. Left the salon yesterday feeling like a fool for not checking the rates. I have been a client of Johnny for over 2 years and have been happy with his work and his rates (which are much higher than in Santa Cruz where I live). Learning that Johnny was no longer there, I booked a highlight and haircut with Marissa and Brian. I made the assumption the rates would be comparable to prior experience. I had also booked a cut with Brian for my man and he was coming at the same time as myself. I was immediately set up for the highlight and my guy rested on the sofa. 2 hours later, Brian finally got around to putting him in his chair. Brian cut at least 3 clients ahead of him while he just sat there. I was also ready to be cut at the same time but I insisted he take my guy before me. I felt this was a major lack of customer service and total disregard and lack of respect for my guy. I loved Marissa and her work. Brian also gave a good haircut. However, my disappointment grew into a fury when I was paying the bill at checkout. The price was double from what I had paid before. I was speechless and shocked. I do NOT think the services warranted a $500 bill plus tip!!! I never even paid that in San Francisco! I have been willing to travel to this salon for 40 minutes for services, however never again. The inflated prices are embarrassing. I expect to pay $100 for a cut, however $280 for highlighting and an additional $125 for a cut certainly isn't consumer friendly. I was looking for a new salon cause I recently moved here from New York City and stumbled upon Oya. The first time was a good experience so I decided to book again a second and a third time. The third time, however, I had a booking at 1:45 pm and the receptionist called me earlier that day and informed me that my stylist was running 30 minutes late so was wondering if I could come in at 2:15. I told her that it was fine but that I could make it at 2:30. She said it was fine. I was running a bit late so I phoned them and informed the receptionist that I was going to be there in about 2 minutes (this was about 2:35) and she answered in an elitist, condescending tone that I would have to reschedule 'cause my stylist has his next appointment in 20 minutes. So it's acceptable if they're running behind but not if I wasn't? For the amount of money I have spent there the last two times I went, and note that the products there are not cheap, they could've at least accommodated me a bit. Never will I step foot in this place and I'll make sure to spread the word. read more

So I strolled over to the counter and proceeded to look at the collection. About 6-7 mins later an employee finally greets me and asks if I have any questions or needed any help. I told him no thank you. Not even a minute later another employee approaches me and asks the same exact thing. As soon as I walked into that salon the environment didn't seem too inviting to me. I walked in and had no idea what to expect. We were here for race weekend and I didn't have time to get my hair cut before leaving Orange County. Semi-long hair poking out of a helmet for 400 miles is NOT comfortable, and I wasn't looking forward to it on the way back home, so I asked the front desk girl at the Monterey Bay Inn for a good salon and she recommended Oya. I walked in and was greeted warmly. I was offered a seat and some refreshments - water, coffee, wine, etc. Water, thanks. They offer Mac stations for you to use while you're waiting for your appointment. I got Ray, a funny Chinese kid who was very good and very patient. Great conversationalist and didn't mind all the questions I had about "Why this?" and "Why that?" My usual haircut person doesn't speak English so I never know what she's doing or why. Ray was very sweet and I was very (very) happy with the results. He taught me my cut's name (A-line Bob with a dramatic slope on the sides and gradual slope in the back). I never knew any of this before. All I ever told my other haircut person was "Please make it fit in my helmet. Long in the front. Short in the back." Hopefully Ray will still be here when we come back next year for the races because if he is (and I'll call before riding up), I'll save my haircut until after we get to Monterey. read more

Teach me to stick up for someone. After my last review I scheduled an appointment a couple of weeks in advance since I can only get in after 5 PM. The day before my appointment I get a call from the receptionist saying that my stylist had to cancel, no reason or explanation or even apology. I needed a hair cut so I asked how soon she could reschedule. The answer was two Fridays from now. I asked why and it was because she couldn't possibly stay past 5 PM on any other day, even though she had canceled on me. Maybe there was a family emergency or something but I wasn't told anything and the receptionist was acting exasperated like it was my fault. Maybe if I had actually talked to my stylist we would have gotten this thing sorted out but I was so put off by the receptionist that I hung up and called Studio 519 who fit me in the next day (coincidentally when my original appointment was) and they did a great job. read more

The 1st time I came just for a cut, it was great! I believe Jessica did it. Since I had a good 1st experience I came back but my 2nd visit had me so angry. I don't remember the girl's name but she had short blonde hair. She did a great job w/the cut but I'm trying to go back to my natural light blonde, she put dark brown all over. Now I have to start over on my natural color. She wasn't nearly as attentive as the 1st girl I saw. I wanted a cut & all over color which I was told would be $115, I wasn't really happy w/that price but hey, I was getting cut & color. The girl said she was putting this stuff in my hair during my shampoo/conditioning that they always use on color treatment: SHE NEGLECTED TO TELL ME IT WAS AN EXTRA $25!! This is why I am giving 3 stars vs 4 stars. I ended up paying $140 for a cut & color w/some treatment I didn't know anything about!!! The salon is very modern & you get a glass o'wine before your service but to add a service & not advise your client it's an additional $25 is very unprofessional!! read more

Be wary of booking your appointment online! I was in town from San Francisco and booked a blowout for a wedding I was attending. My stylist was very friendly, but the blowout was average. Upon checking out, I was surprised to be charged $60, $25 MORE than the price indicated on the website. Being late, I had to rush out, but left believing I had been charged for the wrong service and called later to request a refund for the difference. When I called it was explained to me that the prices online are a base price and that the stylist I had been assigned was more senior and thus more expensive. While I realize that the quote online is a base price, for a blowout the $25 swing is completely unreasonable! Especially for an average 'do. Even Drybar in San Francisco, which I frequent regularly, is less expensive and includes better ambiance, curls (which Oya up-charges for), champagne and a chick-flick! I was assured that my feedback would be used to update the website, however, Oya can be assured that I will not be back again and would not recommend to others. read more
