Hey Travoodies Hey So this is place I think I am going to have to do a redo. . This family owned and operated business is nestled on the cornor of University Ave in St. Paul. Quite small like a good mom and pop shop. Great people who were willing to serve and ready. The place definitley gives me diner feel though they have shifted things around. Can sodas add to that feel. Why the redo? I ordered the weekend special 14oz T Bone Steak and Jumbo Shrimp, fresh baked potato, salad, and texas toast, however my steak was a litte charred more than I cared to eat. When I arrived it was a busy and the one man band cooking the food was doing an excellent job at grabbing each order as the person walks in. However, I think he had a lot of moving pieces, and my steak stayed on the grill a tad to long. From what I can tell the people love this place and are often regulars. I can't lie, I was excited to see catfish on the menu, yet disappointed when he said he hadn't had any in over a year. Overall experirence on a scale of 1 to 5 would be a 3 for now. I used to be a regular 40 years ago or so when this was an actual mini-chain in the twin cities. One could get a complete steak dinner for $5 or less in those days. This particular location operates in the same manner, order your steak at the counter, get handed a pre-made salad and portion control dressing, order a drink, take your table, and rather quickly, out comes your steak, potato, and texas toast. Flavor was great, they offer a variety of "cuts", ranging in price from $15-$20 or so. In retrospect, I should have ordered fish. The family-owned staple has had the same menu and consistency in their products since I've been going here, which has been well over 15 years. As a local patron, I know everyone working by name, and they often times remember me, and ask about my family members. I appreciate the warmth that they provide, and how kind they are. I typically order the same thing every time, with an occasional switch up. I get the Steak Burger Plain with a side of Heinz 57 sauce, Double Baked Potato with Sour Cream, and French & Ranch with my complimentary salad. Ok, as an aviation professional I eat on the road a lot and I love a good steak on the bosses dime the establishment isn't what I was expecting from the Best Steak House, but the staff made up for anything that was lacking on the inside. It seemed pretty family oriented at first - almost warming. I asked for medium rare, got well done. I returned it and was given attitude, which I disregarded. Then when I got my medium rare steak, it came out looking absolutely DISGUSTING! It looks like the steak had been sitting out for hours in water or something, then thrown on the grill to warm up. (See attached picture). I decided not to complain, because it seemed that was the "best" they could already do. Was charged $24 each for 2 steak dinners; the steak was swimming in its own juices, was beaten to a thin pulp and had very little char. Fries were limp and the baked potato was smaller than my fist. Had a lingering craving for steak but didn't want to spend an arm and a leg at some upscale place where I would have to wait for my slice of cow. Stopped in here and now I'm good for the rest of the year (I rarely order steak when I eat out). The owner was friendly as soon as I walked in the door with my other half in tow and he was patient as we took a moment to look over the menu. I settled for the t-bone steak, medium well-done. The other half got the steak sandwich. The front area works cafeteria-style: you grab a tray and utensils, grab a salad (mine came with salad), dress your salad how you prefer (I'm just a plain ranch gal) and then pay. Pick a table, they'll bring your order to you when it's done. Steak was perfectly cooked and was delicious with the steak sauce. I always seem to straddle this line between medium-but-not-well-done-enough and medium-but-too-well-done. It was a huge, juicy steak that came with two thick slices of buttered toast. The salad was meh, could've been bagged salad from Cub Foods--but that's not what I was here for anyway. The baked potato with butter wasn't anything special but I scarfed it down the same. :-D My SO, who is rather difficult to please, was very happy with his steak sandwich--this was a shocker for me. He mentions the steak being perfectly cooked as well, even though the steak was thin. The only odd thing was, it was literally a huge piece of steak in-between two thick slices of buttered toast, so he had to take out the steak and cut it up himself to fit. This sandwich came with a generous side of fries--nothing special, just thick 'meh' fries. We had a slice of caramel cheesecake at the end. It was delicious! Creamy and sweet. It's a small restaurant--not more than a dozen tables, I believe. Now here's what I love about this place--you can tell it's family-run. There are photos on the wall of the family that run this place, family photos. With their accents and multiple photos of the Parthenon and other Grecian decor, I'm assuming they immigrated from Greece. The guy in the photos is the same guy behind the counter, cooking the steaks--only a bit older now. I really appreciate seeing restaurant owners present, working, and talking to their customers. Owner was super friendly and kind, chatted up all of the customers who came in--I could tell my SO and I were the only newbies there, everyone else acted/treated the place like it was family. Parking was tight but we didn't have a problem finding a spot. Overall, I really like this place. The steak comes out fast, big, and delicious. A heaping pile of gyro meat on top of a pita with onions, lettuce and tomato. Even though this is a SANDWICH SIZE, please do not think that you can try to eat it like a sandwich. This is fork and knife situation - especially with the amount of tzatziki on it. I mean, I guess you can try to fold it but please have a spare shirt. My dad always orders the Texas toast sandwich. Two pieces of Texas toast, one topped with lettuce, tomato and onions and the other topped with a tender piece of steak. If I wasn't obsessed with gyros, this would be the best thing on the menu. Ok I was in town visiting MN for two days. My two toddlers was starving. After a five hour drive up. I googled food places found this place. It had five stars rating. Plus it was two minutes from the place I was staying. So I went ordered two steaks and catfish. You had a choice between a baked potato and fries. It also came with a salad. I took the food back to where I was staying. I never had a steak so delicious. It was juicy tender. So worth the price you pay. The staff was friendly. The cashier knew I wasn't from MN. She's "looking for something, you know?" Her other son, the one that's not cooking, Steve as his work shirt says, yeah Steve'll run your credit card for ya. And the granddaughter serves and buses the tables. The clientele runs the whole gamut, but I must say we were a little out of place in our business suits. It's mostly blue collared work shirts, white t's, and gold chains galore. As the sign says behind the grill, "There's something special for every day." The amount and quality of food you get here for the price can't be beat. I got the fillet which comes with an iceberg salad (with bacon bits!!), baked potato, and awesome Texas toast.
