Ok as a last resort- I waited over 10 minutes to check in. There is no where to stand if there are more than two people in line. The staff seemed like they could care less that I was there. Not rude, not great just eh....didnt explain half the things to me that they did to the others checking in. The parking is atrocious. I called the day before and was told "it should be fine". It's a nightmare. They have three hotels jammed into the same corner. The room was clean and ok. The ac sounded like a machine going off through the night. Overall a good stay with a few caveats: The pool is inside so it is humid and smells like chlorine. But great if you have kids as the pool is heated. The walls between rooms were thin. We could hear our neighbor on the phone quite well. Besides that the room is nice, it is walking distance to downtown, and has complimentary breakfast and happy hour drinks if desired. I can't believe we're staying at hotels we've picked for if we're traveling by ourselves, instead, this hotel was picked by our tour manager! So, this room is complete with all the things we like: microwave, fridge, separate two queen beds, comfortable pillows, tight bathroom, swimming pool, I don't like the smell of chlorine, we're inside and by the pool. Our bedroom have shades we can see the pool, and one window. It's bright, not dark lighted compared to the last hotel we stayed at. Happy hour was very nice. Breakfast, could be improved. We were in town late last month for the Polar Express. Booking in September yielded a great price, even with the doggo along. The Good: Our standard room was clean and met expectations. Having the sink in view of the beds/door is not my jam, though. We liked the steady heater and comfy beds. The pool and hot tub were right around the corner, spacious, clean, and open long hours. This was probably the best feature of the property. Each adult guest gets three free drink tickets for happy hour during a stay. While the beer was low mids, my drink was plenty good and appreciated. Short walk to the train station, coffee, Cuckoo's, Steamworks, etc. The Not as Good, but Not Really Bad: Parking gets crowded and we only got to park on our side of the building once in three days. The back end of the lot felt like a hike in single digit temps. The Ugly: While the free breakfast was decent, standard--the staff in the breakfast room were rude to my mom one day and downright hostile w me the next. I was taken completely aback by the guy working on Sunday. Not welcoming. We ate elsewhere on our last morning. 5 star location, 4 star indoor pool, 3.75 star room (at this price point), one star breakfast experience. read more

Hotel is nice compared to others around town. Located by the train station and within walking distance of downtown. Limited parking lot. Staff were extremely friendly and we were able to check in early. Our room was on the first floor right by the pool, hot tub & bar/breakfast area. Originally thought that was awesome so we didn't have to travel far. However, we soon realized how thin the walls were & how loud the pool area was. Not ideal but thankfully the pool closed at 9 p.m. Only time we had a problem was after hours neighbors being loud (thin walls) & morning time when breakfast was being served. Our room was decent size and well kept. Bed was comfy, bigger TV w/ direct TV, mini fridge, microwave, couch, office space & a walk in shower, coffee maker, ear plugs, soaps & lotion. The pool area & hot tub was well kept & clean. They had happy hour from 5:30 to 6:30 and offered free cocktails & draft beer for guests. Breakfast was great! I wish they had more healthier options but over all no complaints. The ladies kept all serving tins full & kept the area clean. Over all our stay was good with minor complaints. *side note- if you're coming on a holiday (like Thanksgiving) just be advised that mostly everything is closed! read more

Already posted day (One) of our 3 day reservation. This is day (2). Toilet water was continually running. This is what was found when I removed toilet tank lid (pictures included). I have no idea if the black mold is the type that is harmful but I have never seen a toilet tank like this. Visually the outside and inside of bowl was clean. When you flush what you think is clean water is sitting in that tank for who knows how long. When you flush it's been shown that small water particles go into the room. This is in room 235 at the. Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn. Durango, Colorado. How many other rooms have this toilet tank issue? Disgusting! Aug 2025. We checked out did not stay our committed 3rd day. Hotels attitude toward the lower rewards members and lack of inspections is why we do not recommend this hotel at this time. My friend lives in Durango & he recommended for us to stay here. We stayed 3 nights and I wanted to write a review to hopefully help the next person looking for a good place to stay. As I was flying into Durango I received a friendly text and it was Best Western. I really liked how they stayed in touch with me throughout the stay and even offered a drink card with a few free drinks during their happy hour. The front office was friendly and easy to check into. We got a room on the exterior of the building. I think this was preferable because the inner rooms open up to the pool and I'm not sure how the acoustics would be in there and I don't like the idea of pool goers peering into my room as I'm coming or going. That being said we used the pool and the jacuzzi for a few hours when we arrived. The pool was a nice temperature and I'm glad I got to enjoy both. Breakfast! Was way better than I thought it was going to be. Every morning I enjoyed coffee, bacon, eggs, potatoes, sausage, fruit, biscuits & gravy, and a danish. There was lots of options but this is what I enjoyed. Staying here was great because you are right next to the train depot and can easily walk into town because you are not on the main strip but 1 street up. Restaurants are literally a block away. Seemed like mostly retirees stay here but I didn't mind that because I don't party and I like quiet when I sleep. The bed was comfy & the shower had good water pressure. read more

Stayed here for just one night. Easy check in and friendly staff. The rooms need some work. Very dark, not much lighting, no room to really move around, small bathroom. On the plus side, they have a nice pool and a daily happy hour from 5:30-7:30 and each adult is given 2 free cocktails. Continental breakfast in the morning with the usual hot and cold items. Hotel is at the end of downtown/Main Street so all the restaurants and touristy shopping is within walking distance. read more

for a $300 per night room, there shouldn't be bugs crawling all around the ceiling and flying over your head. I took pictures and showed it to the desk people and they said they would take care of it while we took the train trip to Silverton...got back room was cleaner but still a couple of bugs around, had to kill them myself and then we noticed mold around the top of the shower....too bad, its a nice building but for the money, the staff needs to fumigate their rooms and check for mold...I would never come back and you should avoid this place for now. read more

Location is very convenient to downtown spots. We were able to walk to everything we had planned. The room was nice and clean. The only downfalls were the pull down blinds on the double doors are not 100% private as there is a 1 inch gap view at the correct angle. The pool area is very nice but since we came during a heatwave, it produced an extremely humid environment. The happy hour with free drinks was fantastic and staff were friendly and helpful. Mattress was better than other places we stayed. All in all I count this as a positive experience and would recommend friends to stay here. read more

This Best Western was really close to the Polar Express which is perfect for the family! The pool and hot tub were great temperatures and clean! They offer a free breakfast which was ok. Also two free drinks per guest for happy hour! This was nice! The things I wasn't a fan of was the noise level of you stay inside the area of the pool. The doors are really thin so you can hear everything! I also didn't like that the hot water ran out during the morning hours when everyone took a shower! We took them at night to avoid this and got nice hot water. Overall the value and location was perfect! read more

One star for the staff because they were nice but that's it. Upon entering the room I saw blue masking tape on the walls showing patches needing to be done. There was cat 5 cable hanging out of the wall above the door. Broken trim plates on the electrical outlets and outlets so old that they couldn't hold the prongs on the charging cable. I also saw there was mouth marks on the patio glass door about 3' up, so maybe a child drooled all over the door? That was unsettling since you know, covid. Being in the room I also realized that you hear EVERYTHING. I guess we made the mistake of not knowing you should have a room with a door to the outside as opposed to the atrium where the pool is. You hear every cough, laugh, sneeze, sniffle, conversation, children screaming amplified because of the atrium. I was wondering also since hotels aren't running at full capacity then why would they group rooms together instead of spreading them out. The screaming child next door kept us up and made sure we were up by 6am. You can hear every step the person above you takes. You can't sleep in here at all. At 9am there's are kids screaming in the pool even though there is a sign to keep noise to a minimum, I know they're just kids but the acoustics in that atrium just made it so loud. There is a hot tub that clearly states that no kids are allowed in so if you're coming back from hiking all day and need a soak then you can just not do that because kids in the hot tub, very young kids, which I thought parents should know that a 3 year old shouldn't be in a hot tub. It was just all around bad experience, I will never stay here again. read more

We stay two nights as we arrived late afternoon and rode the train up to Silverton and back the next day. Very nice rooms, breakfast was typical of all hotel free breakfast offers. I do have to say that being a senior, I was a little put off by all the colored hair, ear gauges, piercings and tattoos but all the staff was very friendly and helpful. They helped me find a good parking spot and gave very good directions. The only think I didn't like was the historic fee added to the bill. By looking at others photos of this hotel, you can see that it is not historic. There are two very beautiful Victorian hotels in town. I was told the hotel is in a historic area so the fee applies. If I had stayed elsewhere, I would have had to pay to park so I guess it all evens out read more

We were traveling 5 states in 5 days. We stayed at 2 other hotels before we got to Durango . Which there were problems at them both. So arriving at this Best Western, I was very cautious. The room wasn't ready when we arrived, no big deal. After we did get the room, everything went well. We were offered free cocktails during happy hour. The bartender, Brandon, was very friendly and polite. The swimming pool and hot tub they had there was well maintained, and very inviting. Last hotel, the pool was closed. Other hotel, the pool and hot tub wasn't . We enjoyed the hot tub and pool. Beds were very inviting and comfortable. Had a good night sleep. Then the free breakfast buffet was spectacular. It was the night before bartender doing the buffet as well. Brandon had a wonderful buffet set up and kept it filled. There was anything you wanted for breakfast. Waffles, Biscuits and Gravy, cereal, oatmeal, bagels, bacon, sausage, eggs and potatoes, fruit and all the commitments, etc. The best breakfast buffet I have ever seen. There was 4 of us, 2 couples and our pets. This place was pet friendly, plus had a doggies park with a beautiful view of the mountains. I wanted to stay another night. read more

Excellent location, a 5 minute walk to the Durango/Silverton Train Station (I timed the walk walking at a slow comfortable pace. The staff here are very reliable and on top of things. Checking in was smoothe and quick. The rooms are comfy and slept like a baby. Many good restaurants within walking distance. If you jog/run, go down Main St. and back for an easy 2-3 miler. The pool in the center is charming (didn't try it but enjoyed looking at it with the banners/flags all around it. There is a very good breakfast buffet (biscuits and sausage gravy are super delish!!!!); the coffee wasn't strong enough. They also offer yogurt, donuts, milk (skim and 2%), scrambled eggs, sausage patty, waffles, and some fruit and a few other knick knacks. Most importantly, after a long day of exploring Mesa Verde, it was a wonderful treat to find out they offer a free cocktail/beer during happy hour until 7:30pm. Great stay. I checked in at three and was given a third floor room, two queens. Very clean, good quality linens, fluffy towels. The soap, shampoo etc provided smelled nicely of citrus. The staff truly made the stay 5 star. The front desk attendant was friendly and helpful with good recommendations for local places. The manager, Ron, was warm and friendly. He also drove me to the airport with all my gear. They offered to-go breakfasts due to Covid, and extra coffee cups and packets for the in-room brewer. The fridge in the room was large, lots of closet space, AC cooled the room quickly. Nice pool and hot tub, too. I would definitely recommend this hotel, you get a lot more than you expect for the price. read more

Air conditioner/heater was next to the computer desk so you would freeze or cook when it came on. temp was hard to control as well. A distinct lack of outlets in this hotel room. there was one outlet with a plug strip attached in the back corner behind a chair. all outlets were difficult to get to. read more

When we walked in the door, the man was behind the counter working quickly (but appropriately) to knock out the line and phone calls he received all at once. We asked about room availability & costs. He found us the best deal possible. We were informed of everything we needed to know, and getting to our room was easy. We took a dip in the hot tub, and although we didn't use it- enjoyed the idea of having 2 crew cocktails if we wanted them. The room was clean. Typical BW hotel: good-sized rooms, comfortable bed. They have the usual toiletries like shampoo, conditioner and lotion but for some reason no body wash. Just bars of soap. Iron/ironing board, plenty of room to hang your clothes. Our room and most rooms had a balcony with table and two chairs. The A/C is wall-mounted and really loud. Every morning on our balcony we could see hang gliders on top of the mountain. This hotel is on the end of the strip, although still walking distance from the train and downtown attractions. The free drinks included were served by some random employee. Not good. The next morning we came for complimentary breakfast....this employee POURED COKD GRAVY FROM THE CAN INTO THE HOT WELL. I am a best western club member, gold level, so I stay at them a lot and this is by far the worst best western plus I have ever stayed at. The rooms are tired, dark, and depressing. I paid the highest price point for an enhanced king with balcony and if this is their best, it is really sad. My balcony faced the busiest part of the parking lot on the second floor ant the view was blocked by the 3 flights of outdoor stairs. This also meant if we opened the blinds to the balcony everyone could see in and see everything we were doing. I wondered why the blinds to the balcony were drawn when i entered because the room was so sad and dark. Once I opened them I understood why they wanted to hide it. I knew from the time that I set foot in the lobby it was going to be bad. The one clerk is on the phone for a long time with a customer, there is no eye contact or I'll be with you in a minute. I just stand there awkwardly for 5 minutes. When she gets off the phone and starts checking me in there is no eye contact. I see despite me telling them it is an anniversary trip and asking for a quiet private room on the highest floor that they have put me on the second floor, but still hope it is ok. When I saw how horrible it was I asked if there was another and she said only a lesser room facing pavement. We asked how they had decided to pre assign me this particular room when I made the reservation a month ago, am a gold member, paid the top price, and asked for something completely different in the notes. She said she didn't know. Obviously no one reads the notes or cares. Went back to room to use wireless; the code they gave me was wrong--when I called she clarified two of the letters were actually lower case though the thing they have printed shows them both upper case. Wireless is slow and takes about 5 minutes to load a page. Really really sad I got trapped here. Don't let it happen to you. There are many many more appealing hotels in town with better rooms and locations and people who actually want you help you and read what you say when you make a reservation on their site. one last thing: once I settled in and got in my pajamas I thought I would watch some TV. But guess what? there is no signal when you turn it on! tried the obvious things, called down, she says she has to send guy up, I said is there anything I can try, I'm in my pajamas, she says no, I know nothing about the TVs in the rooms. So I got to change back into my street clothes and meet the guy who fixes all the broken things here. He must be busy. I also have to agree with the guest who says the noise in the pool area inside is amplified by the amphitheater like structure in which all the rooms are organized around the indoor pool and kids are yelling all day. The pool itself is really depressing and creates intense humidity that is very unpleasant to walk through each time you enter your room. I also thought it was unsafe with respect to covid because the pool is inside, all the doors are closed to the outside, it is really humid, and groups of people congregate by the pool with no masks talking loudly and doing other things that would definitely propel any virus load into the air. Very poor ventilation. The fact that is was a plus and that it was expensive made me think it must be nice. Don't be fooled by that. I am going to write to best western and advise them to take off the plus. It is definitely far from up to snuff when it comes to qualifying as a best western plus. read more

Very clean rooms and spacious! Indoor pool is nice and warm and big enough for busy season! We stayed here the week after Christmas, and it was packed! The breakfast attendant was the best part of our experience here!! She always greeted everyone with a joyful "good morning!!" And was overly accommodating - in the best way. Always had the most positive attitude and very upbeat!! Front desk staff is helpful and friendly as well. Parking was a bit difficult (probably because of the occupancy). Male bartender was great! Best Long Island I've had in a while. Overall, amazing experience and perfect location!! So close to everything - within walking distance to main st. Really cute hotel, loved they had coffee available all times and non-dairy flavored coffee creamer, Props for that! We didn't eat breakfast here, just coffee and juice. I too was concerned with the pool being right outside our door, but it was fine, the pool closed at 9pm. We both slept well, comfortable bed. Employees, were really nice. Hotel was really clean too. Nice location, clean rooms to begin with but as time went on the service got a bit sloppy. Concierge service made me wait to extend my stay until 3 other customers were checked out, I was there first they just didn't know what they were doing or how to extend my stay and didn't want to say anything. Air conditioning was a broke down window unit that only cooled the bathroom area! On Saturday we went to jump into the pool at 9pm to find it's closed due to its location of the pool.
