Another good experience at Bettola! They have a great atmosphere both indoor and outdoor, with a bunch of different seating areas. I enjoy the outdoor seating during the Fall and indoor when it's hot. The service was nice, but we had a child with us and they didn't seem like they liked that very much. Bettola's environment is pretty lively and loud (not a quite, intimate setting at all), so it turned out to be a great place to bring a child. We started with the Burrata, which is a must get!! It comes with a fluffy piece of bread cooked in the pizza oven on top of a bowl of creamy Burrata filling covered in olive oil and fresh pepper. To drink, I started with the Capp Corse Spritz and I disappointed. It was a little bit more bitter than a traditional Aperol Spritz, which I liked, but it was completely flat and tasted like the ice had already made it watery by the time it made it to my table. We also ordered espresso martinis which we loved, not too sweet but not too strong. We ordered the Bietola pizza, which was awesome! It was basically a white pizza with sausage and kale. The Quattro pasta was a good choice too! I typically always order the Bolognese pasta, but I wish that this one had more sauce on it. We didn't get the Kale salad, but it looked really good! We'll be back soon to Bettola for the Burrata, pizza and espresso martinis! read more

My sister brought me and a few other family members here tonight. We sat outside and it was beautiful. The whole place is architecturally interesting. Our server was absolutely great! His name is Tyler! I've had a lot of Italian food, but this place is definitely my new favorite. We tried an assortment of small plates, salads, pastas, and drinks. About half the pasta in my Quattro Formaggi was visibly burned- I don't know whether that is standard for this dish or not but I personally did not enjoy it. This restaurant is amazing! Easily the best Italian food I have found in Birmingham. My absolute favorite dish to get is the gnocchi. The menu seems to be somewhat seasonal, so I can't wait to see what else I can try. Another favorite is the burrata, which is basically a huge piece of fluffy, warm bread served with dipping cheese. Difficult to describe, but I promise it's amazing! It's a slightly pricey restaurant. The entrees are around $15-$20, and you can spend a lot more with appetizers and drinks. It's not somewhere I go often, but it's a great option for a special occasion or every once in a while. The waitstaff is friendly and helpful. Finally came here after getting a recommendation from a couple friends that had dined here before. Made a reservation prior to arriving, which saved us a wait on a busy weekend evening/dinner time. This restaurant sits on 3rd street where a handful of other new restaurants recently opened. We were greeted and served by very friendly hostesses, waiters and staff. We went with some cocktails to start and shared the charcuterie board 3 meats, and 2 cheeses (1 soft, 1 hard), an arugula salad, the gnocchi with braised pork shoulder and another pasta with braised beef (could not recall name). All were very filling, deliciously seasoned, and cooked to tender perfection. The charcuterie board was probably our favorite. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the cheeses and meats and provided great recs for our choice of a hard and soft cheese as well as side toppings. Overall, great place for small and large groups, as well as dates with significant others. Nice atmosphere. Friendly staff, fair prices, great quality eats, and delicious cocktails. The food is amazing! My girlfriends and I ordered the burrata and flat bread to share and let me tell you, it was so good, I would've been happy with just that! Their pasta is pretty great too. The pasta tastes fresh and made in house. Our server was also great. He was always there refilling our water glasses and our wine glasses. I had dinner here last week and had an overall great experience. The service was great. I ordered an antipasta plate and deferred to our server, Brik (sp?), to make the cheese selections. He did a great a job and I enjoyed it very much. I also asked for wine suggestions, which he recommended and provided tastes of the same with no hesitation. I ended up just ordering the sangria. They make sangria with ginger beer here and it was different but still very enjoyable. For my entree I had grouper with artichokes, artichoke sauce and fingerling potatoes. And it was delicious! So, you're probably wondering: why only three stars? First, it was the dessert. I ordered gelato which is usually a fail-proof dessert. However, it was served melted and soupy. They actually apologized for the consistency of the gelato as it was served to me, so I found it strange that they recognized that it was melted and still chose to serve it. My friend ordered a creme de pot with gelato on top, and her gelato was still firm. So I can only surmise that they plated mine and then let it sit while they prepared her dessert. I probably should have sent it back but I didn't want to make a big deal out of it. Plus, I really just had a taste for something sweet, so I ate it. Secondly, about an hour or two after I left the restaurant I became sick. Something I ate did not sit right. Not exactly sure what I ate that caused this, but it was definitely a bad ending to an otherwise pretty good night. I've been here before and I just had to go back to try something else on the menu. The ambience is very relaxing. It's not loud and our server was very friendly. I like how there is a little bit of everything on the menu. We ordered a cheese plate which arrived at our table very beautifully presented. Everything very fresh. My pasta wasn't very appealing but it tasted amazing. It seems like many don't find that particular pasta appealing because it looks like worms but the really cool part is that the pasta is made by a 200-year-old pasta machine. This could very well be my favorite Italian spot. This place exceeded every expectation in terms of service, food, and atmosphere. I love cheese, pasta, and pizza. All of these were amazing here. Even their complimentary bread was soft, fresh, and delicious. Left me wanting more. They have plenty of parking in the lot in front of it. Not sure how long the lot is open for though. It was rather dark so I wasn't sure if there was a gate that closes or not at a certain time. I came with fellow yelper Kimia M. and we shared a delicious meal of pasta, pizza, and dessert. Service was on point with our wait staff checking on us several times throughout the night and being so well informed of the menu. We basically ordered exactly what she recommended, and we were not disappointed. We wanted a pasta, but also wanted some protein so our waitress hooked us up with a Quattro Formaggi with house made sausage. LIFE CHANGING. Penne has always been my favorite pasta, but the sauce and cheese in this pasta was truly the highlight. Every time you bite into a chunk of cheese, it's delicious. I only found two chunks of cheese, but would have definitely welcomed more. The sausage was a good addition, but that pasta could have stood alone itself perfectly. The pizza. Mascarpone and prosciutto sound like a winning combination. The pizza was good. I love arugula too, but I could have used a bit more mascarpone. Look at me asking for cheese again. Smh. We finished the meal with their dessert. A chocolate budino. Delicious! I've never even heard of it. It was just what the waitress recommended. Starting with the staff, our waitress was sweet and patient since it was our first time, she listened and answered our questions. They brought out the bread and it was great. Then the food, We shared a Mascarpone E Prosciutto pizza and a Quattro Formaggi pasta dish. We added sausage to the pasta and it was fantastic. The portions were big. We couldn't eat the pizza and took it home for the next day and it was still great. For dessert, we had the chocolate budino and it was Good, it had too much salt for my liking. Can I give Bettola six stars?! This is currently my favorite restaurant in B'ham. To begin, know that my husband and I visited about 2 months after being in Italy. This place was so authentic!! We got an antipasti platter with delicious meats and cheeses that are hard to find in the states. We then shared a pizza with Italian sausage and red pepper. Exceptionally good place, with a very unique character! Whatever comes out of that firewood oven its all you have to care. For lunch or for dinner their "rosticceria" products are above uniqueness in the B'ham area. Sure, places like this are very common in cities like Manhattan, but I guess by now you realized that we have a slightly smaller diversity here, for food! Their pizza is THE MOST accurate representation of the Neapolitan pizza in town, full stop. Chewy, light, fresh, and burning hot, their pizza really brings me back to me home country. Fantastic addition to the great dough is their salami. Those salumi are a masterpiece of old fashion italian "macelleria" art! Those salumi coupled with that tough make a really great product that is, in quality, way above any other pizzeria in town, ANY! Of source neither their pizza is perfect like the one you would eat in "Via Tribunali" in Napoles. I wished the tomatoes sauce was more "punchy", i.e. a less sweet taste that would contrast more with the sweetness of the prosciutto. The buffalo mozzzarella is ok, nothing special, but that's what we get here in town. Crowded, some time loud place, but with a great and careful wait staff. Big miss, that almost costs them a star, is the availability of beer only in bottles! That's so bad, again, almost a killer! I have been to Italy and this is as close as you can get to authentic Italian in Birmingham, based on what we ordered. Why it took me so long to get here I don't know, considering I come to Pepper Place and Avondale a good bit. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here a few weeks ago, and it did not disappoint. We came early on a Friday evening at 5:30 after having drinks next door at Hop City. I was expecting a line, but it was not super crowded and we were seated promptly. There's plenty of seating inside and they also have a spacious patio area outside. The atmosphere is trendy and modern yet makes you actually feel like you may be in a foreign country. The service was great; our server always attended to our needs and gave us plenty of time to ourselves. The food was fantastic. We both ordered the antipasti platter as an appetizer with several meats and cheeses along with the roasted veggies and peppers marinated in olive oil. All of the items we tried bursted with flavor and reminded us of tapas plates we had in Europe. Extremely fresh. For the main course we split a pizza-the "Salsiccia e Peperoni", which is is basically a delicious pie with true Italian sausage and roasted papers. We had a pizza just like this in Florence, Italy, and it tasted just like it. The pizza crust is hard and toasty at the edges and then very soft towards the middle-the perfect blend. All in all, I will be coming back here....a lot more. This will be our new go-to for authentic, non-"Americanized" Italian. Keep up the good work, Bettola! read more

Very nice and bustling place with great food, great service and very welcoming. On my places to visit whenever I return. I ran across this place when looking for a nice Italian dinner close to the Homewood area. I was dropping my son off for Spring semester and were hungry from a busy day. Word to the fellow Yelpers, call ahead as it is reservations only. If its short notice, call anyway, Terry was great at reading the room and will let you know if they can accommodate you. Trust her!!! The food came out fast, hot and tasty. The menu is not very large but does have just the right depth to find a tasty dish. My son had a red sauce pasta with sausage and devoured it. I had the Gnocchi beef which was excellent. Dishes were chopped full of flavor, and just the right portions. We capped off dinner with coffee and dessert was was delicious. He had the tiramisu and I had a chocolate mouse. Both were refreshing and not overly sweet that it complimented the coffee well. The service was great! I can't say enough about Terry, the GM who was fabulous as she welcomed us and seamlessly worked the restaurant welcoming, seating and just being a joy. Jen, our waitress was awesome as well. Maria greeted us 16 minutes late yet, like old friends. The 3 of us were each very hungry, so when beautiful food and wonderful Italian red wine began to flow immediately we were all very happy! Black Bass, hanger steak, and a large salad with sautéed leeks- each served hot and delicious. Compliments to Maria, her Mom, the chef and the gentleman who on a moment's notice magically made a terrific Tiramisu covered in ground chocolate appear for the table. Of all the great places to eat in Birmingham, CHOOSE SOMEWHERE ELSE. I typically give a restaurant 3 tries before I decide I don't like it, and this place failed me all three times so I would definitely not recommend it. The food is fine. I don't have a huge issue with the food. It may be over priced for what you get, but there isn't really anything wrong with the food. Strike 1: I think the place is trying to be more exclusive than it actually is. You must make a reservation or the staff will look at you like a peasant. Tried to go here for an early evening date at 5:20pm. We were first scoffed at for not having a reservation. Mind you the entire place was empty. The hostess acted like she was thinking really hard and finally said to us, "hmmmm I guess I could SQUEEZE you in at this ONE table, but you'll have to sit at the bar until the kitchen opens in 10 minutes." REMEMBER, as stated earlier, the entire place was empty. I doubt they had reservations to fill every single seat by 6:30 on a weekday. We left. Strike 2: Pepper Place (where this establishment is located) became known as the entertainment district. This was a big deal and all the restaurants offered specials to celebrate on opening day. All except Bettola, which is apparently too good to participate in such a thing. Even Oven Bird, a much finer place with better food and a better reputation offered a special. Come on now. Strike 3: Came to celebrate a friend's birthday a while back and brought a cake, of course. Well, we were given two options: pay $15 to eat the cake here, or go sit on the sidewalk. We already spent plenty of money here from drinks to appetizers and entrees so we didn't think $15 to eat our cake was justified. We chose the sidewalk. Customer service at its finest right here. To summarize, this place is fine. But there are so many delicious places to eat in Birmingham- choose anywhere else and have yourself a better time! read more

I booked a dining room table for tonight via Resy. I got a call this evening from the restaurant & the gentleman told me that b/c I booked an outdoor table they would need to move my wife & I to the Chef's table due to the cold weather. I questioned this because I had an email confirmation stating I booked a table in the dining room for 7:30. He informed me that their system had me down for outdoor seating & we would be seated at the Chef's table and apologized. I asked if there was anything he could do to help me. He went & spoke to the manager & came back on the line to tell me they were able to make room for us in the dining room. He was incredibly sympathetic & gracious & so kind. When we got to the restaurant, he offered his apologies once again, although it was not his fault at all. I wish I would have gotten his name, but Bettola should know who I'm talking about as he was the host this evening. I can't say enough positive things about how he handled the situation professionally, but also on a human level. I have a lot of respect for him & he is a great asset to your restaurant. As far as the food, everything was fantastic. Burrata, salad, pizza, wine...all excellent. I can't believe in my 3.5 years of living in Birmingham I had never been here!!! The atmosphere is modern and cozy, and from the main dining room you can see all of the cheeses and cured meats. For starters we got the 3 meat/cheese antipasti. We chose the salami Finocchiona, Serrano ham, and the Verde Capra cheese. I'm not a cheese eater, though, and did not partake in that. For the condimenti we chose the marinated olives and artichoke purée. I love love love olives, and these were delightful. The marinades were unique and herb-filled. Pertaining to the meats, I definitely preferred the salami to the ham, but both were so good. As soon as I tried the ham I felt like I was back in Florence, Italy eating at my favorite hole-in-the-wall pizza spot. Very authentic. For the entree I got the seared sea scallops. Holy moly, I will be back to get this again. Three large, tender scallops on a bed of hazelnut pesto risotto. The risotto was incredibly flavorful, and the oat clusters added a perfect crunch to the dish. Grape tomatoes are a way to my heart on pasta dishes, so kudos to the chefs for having those on there as well. Definitely try this dish!!!! JD got the pancetta and cipolla pizza. It was huge and covered in caramelized onion, pancetta, and hot peppers. I would definitely like to try some more of the pizzas. They're all so unique and authentically Italian. My eyes always get stuck on the pasta portion of the menu, though. We were too full to delve into dessert, but the table next to us got some tiramisu that looked pretty killer! read more
