A classic diner with classic diner fare. Handmade milkshakes are a draw as is breakfast all day (not a recommended combo but a possibility.) I was in the area and decided to eat lunch before driving home. Searching Yelp, I located several possibilities but as I drove thru town, Betty's caught my eye. Street parking is the only option but even for a small town, payment can be done via an app. I walked the block or so to Betty's which is fitting in a college town where everyone walks. I was greeted immediately as I walked in the door. Roughly half the tables were filled and I opted for a booth at rear of the diner. The diner is fairly small with a lunch counter' several booths and even fewer standalone tables. The setting is straight out of the 59scwith local memorabilia and even a functioning toy train. I was handed both a breakfast and a lunch menu because I was indecisive. I decided on a hamburger sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy - think hot roast beef sandwich but with a burger patty. The food arrived relatively soon and as warned, it was quite a generous portion. The sandwich is plated closed face and the entire dish had a liberal covering of brown gravy. I was pleased that while tasty, the gravy was NOT a salt bomb as so many gravies have become. The bread was amazingly fresh and the burger patty appeared to be hand formed. Nothing was earth shattering, as expected, just old-fashioned diner food. Prices were a bit higher than I expected - $13 for the sandwich and tea. Not insanely expensive but I would have thought prices would be more reasonable for a college town. Either way, I'd visit again. read more

Calling all Yankees, now here this! Should you find yourself below the Mason Dixon Line, specifically in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, and you feel like you should eat a "good Southern breakfast," it would be a shame to not stop at Betty's. This nondescript little restaurant serves up your typical diner breakfast along with all the southern favorites: creamed chipped beef, sausage gravy, grits, biscuits... I went with the sausage gravy on homefries, and mom and cousin went with the same over biscuits. My dad and my uncle ordered the "country skillet" which had something like 5 layers of breakfast items including homefries, scrambled egg, sausage gravy and cheese in a big bowl with a side of toast. My aunt chose two eggs over easy. A few of our plates were practically licked clean, and the ones that weren't ended up that way because of sheer volume, not lack of delectablity. Service was quick and friendly, food was delicious, my coffee cup stayed full... I'm a fan. read more

Always in search of a good breakfast place, I heard Betty's was the best in the area. Indeed it had won The Journal Newspaper "Readers Choice Best" award. Well, the place is tiny...booths were way too small for me to fit, but I wasn't embarrassed, they were too small for my husband too. There are only three tables there and we finally got one. We were cramped as we also had with us our 8 month old in his car seat, but it wasn't horrible. The breakfast menu had all the favorites including all the southern gravies that you can't find up north. DH and I both got the western omelette and I also got a cup of grits. Both of us felt the eggs in the omelette weren't cooked enough and were a little skimpy on the ingredients. My grits, however, were the best I've had anywhere since moving to this area in 2005. I loved them and even a cup sized portion was more than enough. The service was friendly and we left her a very good tip. She, as most people do, made a big deal over our baby boy and he smiled at her...and that was enough for us. I can see this place is a favorite among the locals, but it wasn't good enough for us to make the semi-long drive back there. Sorry Betty's...you may have won the Reader Choice Award, but it wasn't tops on our list. read more

This restaurant has been around for a very long time Four of us got the country skillet, three with chipped beef gravy and one with sausage gravy. The skillet is a bowl of home fries and scrambled eggs covered with the gravy of your choice. They are very tasty and they come with a side of biscuits. Service was fine. read more

We went here when we were visiting the area a couple months ago. We were looking for a nice breakfast. We arrived outside and there were people everywhere... I mean everywhere... we walked inside and it was a very cramped and small restaurant. Once we got seated funnily, which was at the bar stools (I would have preferred a booth, but who knows how long we would have had to wait for that) our waitress greeted us right away but she seemed to be in a fluster.. which it was crazy busy so I guess I could understand.. we got our drinks which took a little longer than I liked but I say it again they were busy. I ordered their biscuits and gravy.. let me just say they are the best I have had in the area so far! The biscuits were buttery, soft inside, and even had been seared on the outside so they were crunchy. That's my favorite kinda biscuit. The gravy was also impeccable! One downfall is the service wasn't that amazing, we had to wait awhile for refills. Despite the no room to breathe in the restaurant, I guess I will say it is worth it overall! We ate at Betty's for lunch. It is a quaint little diner. Nothing fancy, but this is what makes it adorable. The crab cakes and coleslaw are out of this world good! They are 100% lump crab and I could eat them every day! The coleslaw is homemade. I skipped the fries because I don't eat carbs, but I'm sure they were delicious too. Had breakfast here on Black Friday rather than in our hotel dining room, poached eggs on corn beef hash. Yes, coffee is weaker than back in Metro DC area or at corner Starbucks, but that is a regional phenomenon and should not be counted as a negative. Eggs were perfectly poached, hash was a tad salty for me but may have been due to the curing of the beef. It's been decades since I've had this dish, my mother used to make it for my father on special occasions, and so I enjoyed it nevertheless. Husband had western omelet made with egg substitute and English muffin, he loved it. Decor is what you would expect in a small town, preferred it "as is" to something that would have been too stark or not genuine to time and place. Wait staff were pleasant and attentive. There was a line of people waiting for tables Saturday at lunchtime so we ate at the counter. We both ordered the crab cakes. We have eaten crab cakes at many places along the Eastern Shore and Betty's serves one of the best I have ever had. The cake is made with large chunks of firm, flavorful crab meat. There is no filler. The light sauce compliments the rich flavor of the meat without overpowering it. This is a truly great crab cake. read more

Food was good, especially the pancakes. Nice diner, but the service wasn't great. Our waitress wasn't too friendly. Despite her not being friendly, after my colleague gave her a tip when she paid our ticket, she followed her outside the restaurant and confronted her about the amount of the tip. Heard they sevre all lump crab cake, so I went to try, well it was the worst crab cake I have ever eaten. I think a frozen crab cake would have been better. Yesterday was my farewell breakfast at Betty's. I have been coming to this establishment for the better part of seven years off and on because simple put they do things right. The down home feel friendly service makes for a special occasion every time i visit. That day i had the pecan pancakes with chocolate chips, side of home fries and turkey sausage patties. Pancakes so fluffy and large they take up the entire plate. I was visiting the Antietam Battlefield on the other side of the Potomac and was looking around for a good breakfast spot, and Betty's Restaurant looked like the best choice. The food at Betty's is good and hearty, in decent portions, and at a damn good price. I visited for breakfast and got the Ram Skillet - a bowl of home fries covered with eggs and sausage gravy - and it was pure satisfaction for a measly $6.50. Service is fast and friendly, and the waitresses seem to know just about every regular who walks through the door. I've always been partial to mom-and-pop greasy spoons, so I might be a bit biased, but this place is superb. read more

We had the crab cakes, a copious serving of all meat, and a burger for lunch. Maybe not the best crab cakes I've ever had, but pretty good. The food was good, the dessert even better, but it was the service which made this a blast and the main reason I'd come back. It's a diner with great individuality, imparting a great sense of the locality, and you quickly felt like one of the regulars. Horrible. So very very disappointed. We arrived a little after 10, to a very busy dining room. We were seated in order and were very happy to be offered faster seating at the counter. Nothing after that was good. We waited 40 minutes for 2scrambled eggs, bacon and a pancake x 2. Other diners, that arrived after us, received their meals before us. One gentleman ordered his food to go and received 3 orders boxed and ready to go with in 15min. Our coffee ( more like colored hot water) was refilled once after 30 min. We would have asked but there was no one available to ask! There were only two women who were allowed to take orders. This may be one reason for such a poor performance. I would not go again and I have no idea how they were ever given the title of "best breakfast" it was mediocre and that taste becomes even worse with poor service and extreme wait times. read more
