Quaint diner in downtown Charles Town. We decided to dine here because it was one of the few restaurants open early during my visit, allowing me to mark West Virginia off my 50 states bucket list. We've been here once before, years ago, and had a decent experience. We decided to go back recently and had a very different experience. I ordered the bacon breakfast burrito. The bacon was really undercooked (rubbery and fatty) and the burrito was mostly filled with hash browns - I had to dig through to find any egg. My husband had the skillet breakfast. It was primarily diced red potatoes - not much egg or sausage to be found. He also ordered 1 biscuit on the side. It was definitely a canned biscuit and didn't seem very fresh. It has that "old school" diner ambiance and decor, but I also felt like it hadn't been cleaned very well since the 50's. Our food was served on paper plates/bowls and we received wrapped plastic utensils. This was odd since I saw stacks of plates over the grill area. Overall, disappointing. For $25 at a place called Grandma's Diner I expect more. read more

Setting aside the fact this is a family small business that deserves patronage. I don't see how anyone rates this beyond a one. It's charming sure but full of workers who are bowed in morning prayer (glued to their cellphones). No one looks up. Paper bowl and plastic? The server literally dumped my bowl and wordlessly shuffled off. They were all so engaged in chitchat I had to get up and ask for things. I was surprised that my food was given to me on a paper plate not only that I have plastic forks and spoons. I asked for steak and eggs. The steak was probably the right size I asked for medium rare and I got a well done steak. It was so tough that I can only eat one or two bites and that was it. The Overeasy eggs that I ordered were good. The Coffee was not the best tasting coffee. Sorry about the bad review, but hopefully they are continuously improve their diner experience. Cute little diner, delicious food, friendly atmosphere and great service. Came to check out this breakfast spot with a friend, and we were not disappointed! They have custom coffee cups and serve local coffee (gotta look up the name, but I checked out the coffee shop day before coming here), how awesome is that?!!! We both got the steak omelette and it was delicious! The only downside is that they use paper plates and plastic utensils, but I think that may be due to covid? A couple of weeks ago three of us popped over to Charles Town after some whitewater rafting to grab some lunch and as luck would have it we stumbled upon Grandma's Diner. To be honest, we weren't expecting much. We just wanted a bit of food, but man were we in for a treat. The food is the thing and all three of our meals were genuinely amazing. The cheeseburger I had was fantastic. I have no idea what they put in it, but I have to chalk it up to some quality ingredients. The munchkins had a BLT and a chicken-salad sandwich. We were all unbelievably happy with our meals. Those cookies we got after our meal were pretty good too! The service was great. The server was fast and friendly, and to be honest this place was really reasonably priced. The next time we're in the area (almost certainly to do some more rafting) we will be stopping by Grandma's Diner again! Seriously - the nicest people run this place! The food is consistent, the coffee is hot, and they are genuine people. We eat there often and also order GrubHub - I know, I know...it's not as profitable for them with Grub Hub but we balance it out with in person visits. Some of our favorites: steak and cheese omelette / bacon egg and cheese bagel / grits with cheese/ steak and cheese / vegetable soup They are no frills, fairly priced, and serve a yummy breakfast or lunch. Best diner in town! My go to is chicken chorizo sub sandwich with jalapeños and pepper Jack cheese- ask for the homemade salsa, *chefs kiss* so good. But honestly everything here is pretty damn good! Grandma's Diner is a wonderful place to get breakfast in the morning in Charles Town WV. If you're looking for a more local feel and good food. It's a little cramped in the restaurant but the owners have been responsive to The CDC's Covid 19 guidelines and so they limit the number of customers in the restaurant. There is no outdoor seating but they do delivery though Grub Hub. I had the steak and cheese omelet with hash browns and rye toast. I thought it was delicious. When you arrive, you will see that's it's a family restaurant and the owners are extremely friendly. I found the prices are fair and reasonable. I really think supporting local small businesses is important these days but I should have gone to McDonald's (same quality) . Went in, sat down, no acknowledge. The group of 4 that came in after me were. Few minutes later the waitress came to take my order, ordered my coffee and coke and my breakfast. My breakfast came out in literally 5 minutes but I didn't have my drinks. The girl just acted like I wasn't even there and continued to serve the other table their food and drinks. I waved her down and asked for my drinks. Then nothing after that, Coke went empty and nothing was asked about how my food was. Anyway, I hate when staff acts like it's a hassle to deal with customers who are paying for service and good food. Bacon-flabby sausage-ok eggs-broken yolk homefries-tasteless and undercooked PAPERPLATES??? Saved the best for last, if you want to get sick, this is the place to go. I went to pay, the waitress was putting some food together and wiped her bare hands on her pants before touching the computer and my debit card. GROSS! The cook lady had no gloves on and had a slab of bacon out putting it on the griddle and touching the spatchula WITHOUT washing her hands.... You can make people sick by these actions. At least if your kitchen is visible to customers, practice cleanliness please. In the end, I had to find a bathroom immediately after I got into my car to leave. Basically paid $20 to take a crap... I ordered the Western Omelet with hash browns and toast. The food was great and well prepared. Hash browns were cooked perfectly, the omelet had all of the flavors I had expected, but the service was lackluster. There were two people in the diner, and I was only ask about a refill for my coffee once in 45 minutes. It almost made me feel as if I were an outsider, as it was my first visit to this restaurant. Food has gone downhill since I last ate here 16 months ago. Service is still exceptional. French Fries are no longer fried, they are baked. The burgers are just plain gross. I wanted to check out a local breakfast diner vs. a chain while visiting friends in the area. Based on the star ratings, Grandmas Diner was the pick. Which I'm now truly baffled. Pros: easy parking, three meals were served 5mins after ordering. If someone is looking for a quick meal, this might be your best option in the area. Cons: lack of interest towards customers from the staff. Our server took the drink orders. Food orders. And done. 20mins with no follow up and we had to request the check. It's sad to say that the location even appeared to be over staffed and we nearly felt like a bother to this place just by walking in the doors. We first came here for lunch. The place has a cool unique color, light blue booth and table. It's the type you witnessed back in the '60s. Wait till you see Grandma, she's in the kitchen working hard. I had vegetable omelette and Hubby had tuna sandwich. The omelette was very good here. Get omelette from here if you like omelette. Hubby said the tuna sandwich was ok here and he would order something else next time. So, we came back for breakfast. This time I had breakfast #3 and Hubby for breakfast #1. We liked our breakfast. My breakfast served with French toast. Coffee was not bad, they served in a cig cup hooray to morning caffeine! We found out that Grandma wasn't around on our second visit. I'm at a loss. I really cannot understand the popularity or the high reviews. Went there this morning with my son and had, at best, a poor breakfast. First the highlights: The cheese and mushroom omelet was made with fresh mushrooms and was fairly tasty. My son said his waffle was "OK". Ok, that's it. The place has a tired and worn out feel to it. I wouldn't say it was dirty but it was not "fresh". Service was disinterested at best, dismissive and rude at worst. She really seemed bothered that she had to wait on people. Dropped the menus on the table and asked for our drink and food order. When I mentioned we had just gotten the menus her response was "some people know what they want" and she turned and walked off. I asked for coffee, son asked for water. Coffee arrived with a curt "here's your coffee" placed on the table and again off she went. The coffee was a weak, tasteless and lukewarm swill. Two sips and the rest went unconsumed. My son's water showed up a few minutes after the coffee, without so much as a "here's your water". Just placed on the table and off she went. Not sure why it was not possible to bring the coffee and water at the same time. We ordered and in due couse the food arrived. Different server brought first my omelet and my son's bacon. A few minutes later his waffle arrived. Again, not sure why the food couldn't have been served together. While my son was satisfied with the waffle (sort of an odd, cornbread looking waffle), the bacon was left unfinished as it was somewhat undercooked to his tastes. It was limp and greasy and he described the taste as "ehh". As mentioned, the omelet wasn't bad but not anything to rave about. No potato with egg dishes. They are ordered separately at extra cost. All in all, there are better options in this area and I strongly doubt that we will return. read more

We came in to get lunch and we were completely ignored they instead took care of people who came after us. The lady acted like we don't exist. I don't like bashing small businesses. However you need to take a little bit of pride in what you do. First off the service was horrible You had to beg to get refills on your coffee. Everything is served on paper With plastic silverware. I ordered the egg breakfast with bacon and hashbrowns. The bacon was not good not sure if it was pre-cooked and then fried at the restaurant. They sell breakfast all day so when you have been hankering for pancake they got you covered!
