I recently visited this restaurant and ordered take out as I had an appointment nearby. The food is excellent, I ordered two or their Saturday specials which were Chorizo breakfast tacos and the shrimp and grits. The tacos were filling and came with eggs and made an excellent dish. However the shrimp and grits was the real winner, the grits were creamy and perfectly cooked and the shrimp were not over cooked. First time here last Saturday when two of my girlfriends and I arrived hung over and ready for coffee and carbs. From the signs in the window, it appeared that pastries would be our only option, as they advertise homemade (and a generous selection of gluten free) doughnuts, muffins, breads, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to see a concise selection of eggs, omelets, pancakes, potatoes and breakfast sandwiches. The first cup of coffee was standard, but then the owner walked over to give us a refill, and it was amazing! He described it in detail, talking about Guatemala, etc. I was very grateful that he was so friendly and informative, but I have to admit, I had just a few hours sleep, so I didn't process much of it! Anyway, incredible coffee from that batch! The homemade hashbrowns were real potatoes, not frozen. They were cut, boiled, then fried with lots of seasoning, so the outside was crispy and the inside was soft and waxy. The pancakes were way better than average, and the food in general felt very fresh and homemade. The owner spoke with us about his use of organic ingredients, and as a side note, there are no peanuts in the whole place, in case anyone has allergies. The owner walked my friend over to the refrigerator to choose some gluten-free products to take home. Staff was super friendly, which more than made up for the sometimes slow service. $28 breakfast for two people. We ordered: French Toast Bacon Smoked salmon Benedict w hashbrowns Lemon danish Apple Juice Cup of coffee The french toast was decent. French Toast doesn't come with anything. They charge extra for a side of bacon (2 pieces). The eggs benedict was decent. The hashbrowns were horrible. (Extremely dry) I took the lemon danish home and i haven't eaten it yet. Actually it's a quaint little neighborhood place. I really wish i would have liked it more. The people working there were very friendly. I don't really drink coffee and it's a little pricey to come there just for breakfast. If the lemon danish wins me over then i'll be back to try other pastries, but if not i'll pass. read more

Being a Northsider and a friend who lives down here claims that this was the best of the southside bakery and restaurant for their gourmet "Twinkie" like pastry that I could not find. I had given him a Japanese Swiss roll cake that he compared it to and was curious to understand his taste. Well I was quite disappointed on what I thought would be a great bakery but it was not. On top of that is the fact that they do not stay open past 2 pm. I was also resentful that the server Megan was Unenthusiastic on answering my questions on what is the popular pastry down here as she was the one who served me but decides to serve customer at the restaurant. I would give this place a try again for their coffee since my friend boost this was also good for fresh coffee versus Starbucks and dining in but the pastries would be the last thing on this I would order here from. They regular menu is amazing per usual. My boyfriend and I love this place. Recently we purchased the frozen lobster mac off their new menu and let's just say it was not up to their standards. The portion was on the smaller size for the price but if it was "the bakery" quality I would be willing to pay the price, sadly I was mistaken. It lacks any flavor, there were only a few small pieces of actual lobster in the "lobster Mac and cheese" and the cheese sauce has the consistency of soup. I am aware they have a new chief so I hope they can tweak this recipe and or add to it. read more

So this weekend, we stopped back in to the Bev Bakery for breakfast. After having a very nice breakfast and on my way to pay the bill, I stopped to check out bread. I was thinking i needed something good for toast (because I LOVE toast...I know, weird). Coffee roasted in house! The day I went, it was wonderful. I could have sat in there drinking it all day (assuming my heart wouldn't explode from the caffeine). I passed a very dreary winter morning here last month eating eggs and potatoes and sipping coffee and reading a book; I don't live in this part of town, but the server seemed to know everybody else that came in and the atmosphere was cheery and warm and a nice break from the January going on outside. I don't know that I'd go exceptionally far out of my way to stop in here (it's a long trek from West Town), but if I'm anywhere on this side of the city, I'll certainly be treating myself to some more of that coffee. read more

Had breakfast for first time, went to try because of all good reviews. I had banana pancakes, hashbrowns and bacon. My boyfriend had milk pancakes, sausage and 2 eggs plus hashbrowns. Everything was freshly made, tasted good, hashbrowns are cubes of potatoes, well seasoned. Other than everything was fresh, nothing stood out as "OMG". Got some donuts , NOW they were really good, fresh, soft and taste way better than a dunking donut. But if you are looking for a great priced place, This is not it. With only 2 of us eating, we got a 46$ bill, that's before donuts. And that's because EVERYTHING is priced seperate. I mean EVERYTHING!!!. This place was really cute! I loved the vibe and feel of the entire bakery. It was pretty busy for a Wednesday morning too! My fiance and I got breakfast - I, eggs benedict, him a skillet. Our food was good - not spectacular - but tasty. The coffee was great, this is definitely a good place to get a good cup of coffee. We got some doughnuts on the way out and they were okay, I prefer DD's vanilla long johns to theirs, but they were still good. Overall, food gets 3/5, but since I loved the decor I gave it a 4/5. read more

If I was ranking solely on staff and coffee (the cafe) it would be higher. The staff is very "local" and the cafe has a real family and friends vibe (like "we only hire family and friends" vibe) Chicagoan you know what I'm saying... Where you can see the diversity is in the coffee selection. I love the "blues" blue mountain and blue moon. I've not seen a better selection in a suburb/outskirts anywhere. The food is theoretically exciting but I've never had "my best breakfast" there. It doesn't match the cafe's range and diversity. It's on the boring side of ordinary. Which is disappointing because in a monotone cultural desert like the south side; Beverly is the closest thing to Hyde Park; which is the closest thing to Lincoln Park... Starbucks what? I always wanted to go in and give it a shot. The last time I ventured in, I was with someone fussy who didn't have an affinity for donuts, muffins or sweet rolls like I do and was too cheap to buy something. But this time was different, I went up to the display case and saw all the yummy selections available. I went with a blueberry muffin and a cup of Brazilian coffee. The muffin was absolutely delicious and the coffee was nice and smooth. So good because there is nothing worse in this world than coffee that tastes like it's filtered through a dirty gym sock. I will rank this cup as one of the better coffees I have had in awhile. After the first cup, the owner came around with a second pot of Ethiopian coffee. He was very informed and went into the whole process of how the coffee beans are brewed, etc. I love it when the owners have an appreciation for the product and not just shoving out to the customers. Overall, it's a really great family run business. I gladly will be back when I'm in the area. read more

The best cafe on the South Side! I do not live in Chicago anymore but I still miss them! They make amazing coffee no matter what your preference. The owners daughter actually makes the best cup but for that you have to go on the weekends or during school holidays. Their cupcakes are fantastic especially their chocolate with butter cream icing. My newest fav thing is their Cinnamon sugar twists. They never have very many and they melt in your mouth so make sure to get their early. Ordering from here is easy and they are super flexible. I have gotten cookies in the shape of pocket protectors and they made it happen really fast. Eating in is another option. They have a really nice menu and they are always looking to add things. I like their pancakes but I am boring and pretty much come for the amazing coffee. Its a great local spot that serves great coffee. Does it get any better?? I miss it every weekend. read more

This place was great for a quaint dining experience. The staff makes you feel like you're coming in to Gramma's or an old time friend's place. They have an array of coffee that will hit any coffee lover's pallet and the quality of it you can taste for sure. If you're not sure what kind you would like to try that day, you can even ask them for the style you want (sharp, strong, smooth, etc) and they will pull up a match you will surely enjoy. Day after Christmas and was headed to "Wolf's Bakery" only to find out it was closed. Why don't places list that on either their website or Facebook? Grrrrr. Not all customers are local and we travel far to your establishment. Needed some baked goods and someone in the area recommended "Beverly Bakery". Once I found it I was very impressed with their selection considering they are a small place. Got a variety of doughnuts and some chocolate chip and walnut cookies. Everything was very, very good. The people who were having breakfast made it very tempting to sit down myself and sample "Beverly's" breakfast dishes but I didn't have the time and I don't think I saw an empty seat. I don't know that I will get up there anytime soon but it's good to know that they are there. read more

I don't get out here as often as I'd like, because it's not on my way to anything and requires a special trip. That said, I've never had a bad experience here. It's a warm and cozy place on a cold and dreary day. The donuts are tasty but need to be bigger. Really like the danishes, love the Benedict with salmon! The hashbrowns, not so much: they need to be crispy and shredded but not dry, and theirs are none of the above. Hint to the chef: perhaps better to have a nice side salad, then, instead of hashbrowns, yes? Just a thought. The coffee is acceptable, but then I think Starbucks burns theirs when roasting, and coffee isn't why you come to a bakery-cafe in the first place: it's the food, which is generally very good. Love the bakery goods, and they're the main reason I come here -- that, and it's a friendly place for a jolt of caffeine and something sweet on a gloomy day. If it were in my neighborhood, I'd probably be here a lot more often, so I suppose my diet is safer this way ... but I strongly encourage others to try it. read more

I was in there getting a few coffees and morsels for a visit with an old friend. It was not my first visit but I am not a regular (I do not go anywhere for coffee or donuts regularly). I knew I was not a regular, so did they. The 2 ladies behind the counter almost made me feel like I was holding up the line while my things were packed up. I took my whole order to go, part of that was 3 coffee's and I wanted the creams and sugars on the side as I was not sure what my friend and her mother wanted, so I said that and she abruptly hands me a bag and says "here, you put your creams and sugars in here". I do not mind doing that but the way she said it was odd. Now I have my tasty treats packed up, I have my creams and sugars and she is finishing up with the coffee. The small coffees do not fit into the carrier with out popping off the lid if you are not paying attention. She was not paying attention and the lid fell off. It spilled and I said "oh, the lid is not on all the way to which she then reached over the counter. grabbed a lid and gave to me after trying the first one and told me to put them on. I did put them on but again, the carrier and the small cup are not matched up well so when you put them in the bottom of the lid gets knocked off fairly easily by the center of the carrier. I have been here before no problems except I know the donuts are expensive, but they are good and not something we can get around here so ok, it is nice to have here. The coffee really is delish and very reasonable. I work at a small, family owned store of a different variety and regulars and non regulars are not looked at differently. I definitely felt the cold vibe from the older ladies behind the counter when I came in and ordered more than one or 2 things like the others did. I am not going to stop going but be pleasant to all customers please, do not make me feel like I am getting in the way especially when I am spending 4 times as much money as the quick in and out commuters. read more

The folks at Beverly Bakery were wonderful and friendly during the South Side Irish Parade. A police officer along the parade route tipped us off that beverages in lidded containers (like the coffee sold here) wouldn't be confiscated, so we dropped in to pick up some coffees (it was really cold outside, anyhow!). Everyone working was friendly and pleasant despite the (most likely annoying) crowd descending on the bakery, and the bakery treats were delicious! read more

This place is great! As soon as you walk in someone is asking you if you need help. If you look like no one is helping you then you will be asked again which is nice. They all wear smiles even when they are busy. You walk in and feel at home. They say thank you and you feel appreciated. I had a chocolate cupcake and asked if they had any without frosting, the young lady went in the back to check for me. And they did. It was scumptdiliumptious if that's a word. It was so soft and melted in my mouth. It had a great flavor, not like those "designer cupcake" places like sprinkles, magnolia bakery etc. This will be my place to get cupcakes for any occasion.
