I used to dye my hair completely blonde (it's naturally brown) and I was told by my stylist that I'd never be able to dye it any lighter once I went back to brown because of the damage. I hear Malcom is amazing but never got a chance to experience it for myself.. I showed up for my appointment after not being able to get ahold of anyone at the salon via phone and paying 15 dollars in parking to find that they had forgotten to put my appointment in and gone for the day. Mistakes happen, but the receptionist was a little rude and didn't seem to want to work with me to see what our options were to get seen. My darling mother gifted me a Groupon for a Keratin treatment at Beverly Hills Color Bar, so I booked an early morning appointment and headed over. The experience was decidedly pleasant. The place was clean and sunny, and the staff was great. I parked at a meter and someone offered to feed it should it run out during my appointment. There were also enough people working at the Color Bar that I got my hairdresser's full attention the two hours I was getting my treatment. I had Nicole, and she was wonderful, friendly and talkative without insisting on constant conversation. The whole experience was painless and comfortable. She also threw in a bang trim free of charge. Incidentally, this was the first time I've ever gotten my hair done by a non-Asian, and surprisingly, she knew just what to do with long, straight, thin, dark hair. It may be time to retire my irrational preference for Korean hairdressers, as my hair came out looking great. Two things first: If I could give ZERO stars, I would!!! and ladies, please beware of Douglas the so-called 15 year veteran that worked at Umberto's and knows how to do hair...he REALLY DOESN'T!!! I went to see Douglas for a good trim, requesting to have my long bangs cut wispy, yet still long, to the side of my face so that I can wear them any way I like. I also asked for some light layering around my face so my hair can have volume. Instead, this guy decides to go downtown on my hair chopping it like a little girl would cut her Barbie dolls hair off!!!!! Douglas brutally chopped my beautiful long hair into uneven pieces and then chopped my bangs off so short and uneven that I was stuck looking like a shaggy dog with no clear vision. My bangs were cut so short they covered my eyes completely. After noticing his BIG mistake and error, I nearly freaked out on him and asked him what had he done. He then begins to make no sense and tell me the crappy hair cut shapes my face and eyebrows..blah, blah, blah! I realized what damage he did around my face with my hair and then panicked. After the blow dry, he then slaps this gunkie crap of oil gloss on and makes my hair look and feel as if I haven't washed it in weeks!!! So not only did I walk out of there with a messed up, Supercut, Fantastic Sams haircut, I looked hella greasy and gross too!! He still made me pay for the cut, even though he knew I hated it and was on the verge of crying. The receptionist knew I was sooo pissed and couldn't even believe her eyes when she saw my cut. When I went to work the next day, my co-workers were all commenting on how uneven and choppy my hair cut was. I was in tears all day from the mess. A few days later, still crying over the cut, I saw another colorist, from Chris McMillan Salon, for my Brazlian Blow Out. She told me the cut was GAWD AWFUL and that I needed to notify the salon owner!! I decided to call the owner of the salon - Malcolm. I told him everything and he said to come in right away so he can see what he can do. Once I arrived and sat in Malcom's chair, he was astonished and speechless of the horrible cut. The only thing he said to do was "wait it out and let it grow because it was just too short and choppy." I nearly lost it and was beyond upset. The cut happened in August right before my bday and trip to Mexico. It's now October and my hair has barely grown an inch and my regular stylist, whom I'll never cheat on again from Cristophe Salon, told me Douglas gave me a mullet and the cut was just too bad to fix, unless I go super short! With that being said, STAY AWAY FROM DOUGLAS AND HIS SCISSORS!!! He is not a good stylist nor colorist. His color is never done evenly nor does he get all the white hairs covered. He's a hot mess and you do not wanna be one either. Just looking out for the fellow Yelpers out there!! You do get what you pay for. read more

Malcolm is a talented colorist, no doubt that is why I returned here for a third visit. Unfortunately, my last visit will be my LAST! Malcolm doesn't listen to what you want, forgetting it is his job to service the client. Not the other way around. His work got sloppier with each visit and I was irritated that he passed me off to his salon assistant when I made an appt with him. She did a terrible job and I have different color patches from her sloppy work. Definitely not worth any savings, you get what you pay for and now I have to pay double to find someone to fix the mess she made. If you're looking for a cheaper option and don't care what the stylist does to your hair, then go see Malcolm. Otherwise, you're better off in the hands of a professional. read more

Thank you Nicole, you are amazing!! I purchased a Groupon to the Beverly Hills Color Bar and called to schedule an appointment earlier this week. The receptionist was warm and efficient, scheduling me in for 10am on Friday as there had been a cancellation. Street parking was relatively easy to find ($2.00/hr, in Beverly Hills the meters accept Mastercard and Visa... of course) and the salon was clean and sleek. Nicole ushered me onto a comfortable seat, took care to make sure she understood exactly what I wanted (caramel-colored partial highlights+cut) and went to work mixing the colors. Her work was quick but very accurate and she was friendly as she foil-ed my hair... we chatted about both being from Michigan, how we say "pop" instead of "soda" and gossiped about last night's episode of The Jersey Shore (I love this girl! She could totally relate to my guilty reality tv pleasure and even brought me a magazine featuring Snooki and Ali to read as she cut my hair). The entire process (highlights+cut+blowdry) took 1.5 hours. The damage was $60 (women's haircut, blowdry included) + 95 (half head of highlights) - Groupon + 20% tip = a very reasonable price for an awesome cut and color! I left a very happy camper and would definitely return to Beverly Hills Color Bar in the future. If you go, make sure you ask for Nicole, she's an incredible colorist and stylist!! :) read more

I've been using groupon's to try new places... I think I may stop doing this. Let me start off by saying that I was late and they get 2 stars for their receptionist. She wasn't rude at all and took care of everything even so much as to try to say that my hair won't feel like this after a few days... I have long brown hair. I'm getting old. I want my greys covered. It's not hard. I do it at home, but it's messy. So I figured I would get a groupon and have someone else do it. Not hard. So I booked a color and a cut with Douglas. I've had a brazillian blow out so my hair is (was) long, shiny, and smooth. After he put the color on and then stuck me under a dryer to "set" the color, he had the girl *kinda* wash my hair out. The started to blow dry it. All the work of the Brazillian blow out was undone. Frizz everywhere. Stiff hair. So in the middle of Douglas blow drying this fiasco out I faked an "I'm late" for work because there was no way I was going to let this person near my head with scissors when my hair when it was *dry*. I left there miserable and won't go back. Now I have to find someone to fix this fiasco. You get what you pay for I guess. read more

I bought a groupon for the keratin treatment. My hair is pretty short and it probably would have cost $175 anyway, so I'm not sure if it was that big of a score as it is supposed to be if my hair was down to my waist but I still bought it as a way to try out a new hair salon. This started out a pleasant enough experience. The salon is cute, everyone seemed nice. Parking was a bit of a pain, but after circling 3 to 4 times I found a spot. Stevie was the stylist I had the appointment with but her assistant, Eliza, was the one who did all the work. Eliza did my shampoo, color and the prep for keratin treatment. Stevie came in and flat ironed. Then she asked me if I would like my ends cleaned up. Sure, why not. I need a trim anyway. Well, that's when things went down hill. QUICK. Stevie literally took the scissor and ran it across the back of my head and that was it. It took her less than 2 minutes. Literally. Done. Didn't trim the front, not the sides, didn't really do a proper trim as you would expect and yet, she was VERY quick to charge me the full price for a hair cut. Imagine my surprise when I went to the front counter to pay. Really?! She didn't even do a proper trim and she had the nerve to charge me the price listed in their website for a hair cut? Seriously? I understand I got a "deal" on the keratin treatment because I had a groupon but does that give Stevie an open invitation to just out right rob me? I finally told them to give the tip to the assistant who did most of the work anyway and that Stevie can consider her tip the price of the hair cut since she didn't really give me a hair cut, nor did she do a proper trim to begin with. If you look at the back of my hair - the ends say it all. She just ran the scissors straight across only the ends of my hair in the back. DID NOT cut anything else. That's not a proper trim. They had the chance to win me over as a faithful client up until that point. Stevie, you blew it. You could have had me (and probably a few of my friends who are also looking for a new salon) as clients for regular keratin treatments at full price, color and cuts at full price but you blew your first impression. Now, not only will I never return, I will tell everyone I know so they won't even bother with your salon either. read more

The only reason I drove all the way to BH from LB in butt numbing traffic was because my sister-in-law gave me a Groupon for this joint. I'm pretty uncomfortable in places like Beverly Hills (I once read snottiness is contagious) but who am I to turn down free anything, right? I walk in and there was only one other client that left soon after I was seated. I can't remember my stylists name but I know she was from the Midwest or something. Anyway, she gave me a friendly greeting and continued to be very pleasant through out. Long story short, I got a trim and subtle highlights. I'm always really wary of getting my hair cut because for some reason some hair stylists mistake "Just a little off the bottom. You know, to get rid of the split ends" with "Please give me a mullet 'cause I've never really felt the need to feel attractive". Well, the stylist at BHCB cut off a lot of damage but still worked with my natural texture (combination wavy/scary). It was so good that it didn't have that just cut look (does that make sense?) This was in February and I still can't see my roots growing in! I wish I could remember her name but just ask for the girl from the Midwest, I guess. Bottom line: I wouldn't pay the prices at this salon on a regular basis but with a Groupon I thought it was fantastic. Definitely recommend going there if you have the means. read more

I hate writing 1 star reviews but just trying to help any blondes out - I went to Doug for a full highlight and the result was awful. It looked great at the salon but when I went home I noticed big chunks of hair had only been partially highlighted (an inch of the root wouldn't be blonde and the rest would be near white) My next stylist (at Chop Chop) couldn't believe how bad it was. The Yelp star rating pretty much sums up how I felt about my experience: very "meh." I got my hair done in July from the Groupon deal - cut and highlights - I figured with a name like Color Bar in upscale Beverly Hills - they'd be experts. It's been a while since my appointment but I really feel the salon was highly overrated. I distinctly remember leaving disappointed with the outcome and overall cut service. Although the colorist I had was pleasant, it turned out she didn't really get the kind of highlights I wanted - they ended up being streaky and too blonde - something I distinctly explained against. I put on a smile anyway and hoped the cut would be better. Malcolm tried to be polite but the small talk was... well, as usual, awkward and he literally spent about 10 minutes on my hair... which pretty much included the blow dry (that he started and walked away from)... it was, again, disappointing that I had to pay a hefty price for the hasty job. I get that they're busy - but we all pay for good service and I feel very jipped on my experience. It's grown out since then and it's no surprise that it's anything but spectacular. The only good thing that really came of my time here was that it pushed me to look for a new salon (which I've found, is close to home, is half the price and provides twice the service and hair TLC). read more

Highlights? Ask for Jade! Seriously. I've been going to BH Color Bar for over two years, but last week I went out on a limb and had someone new do my highlights - her name was Jade - and I could NOT be happier! Here are a few reasons why I'll go to no one else from here on out: 1. She listened. I told her the look I was going for - a Jennifer Aniston/Cameron Diaz blonde. I asked to lightened up my previous dirty-blonde style, but to definitely stay away from that all-over California bleached barbie-doll look. Without much explaining, she totally got it. Jade suggested we do two colors - one sort of a caramel color, the other a brighter/lighter blonde. She suggested we frame my face with the lighter of the two shades where the sun would naturally hit my hair. She worked the caramel in to add dimension and the result was a.m.a.z.i.n.g. 2. She foiled the sh*t out of my hair. I told her I like really thin highlights - none of those chunky/thick ones. As tedious of a process thin foiling is, Jade packed my head THICK with rows and rows of the thinnest layers. The time and attention she gave my highlights was beyond praiseworthy. Most colorists want to move people in and out, but Jade spent the time (it took a couple of hours) to do such an amazing job and give me exactly what I wanted. The result was so natural, with perfectly integrated color! 3. She offered maintenance suggestions. She noticed that my shower water had turned my hair slightly green prior to coming in and suggested easy rinses to do every couple of weeks to cleanse my blonde hair from the less-than-pure water. She also suggested ways to protect my hair from damage including using dry shampoo and different heat protecting sprays. I liked that she offered up extra info, was just nice to see that she cared (she wasn't pushing any products, there aren't items for sale here). Moral of the story: go to Jade if you want great highlights. She did an amazing job and she was really fun to talk to! She probably also does other great work, but highlights are all I've gotten done so far. Anyways, LOVE HER and you should definitely have her do your next 'do! read more

I came to him three years ago with the remnants of fire engine red ombré (IE: a weird brassy, orange damaged mess) and in the time since he has taken me back to a more natural mid brown, then to borderline black-brown, and now to a gorgeous natural dark blonde and my hair is somehow healthier and longer than it has ever been. It isn't often you get exactly the color you want but that was my experience at the Color Bar. My stylist actually listened to my request!! Besides this, the salon has a friendly vibe which shows you an upscale Beverly Hills salon can also be client-friendly. What I don't understand is why they would advertise on Groupon...those are the bargain hunting types who will never return if they have to pay full price. It's difficult to rate services because so much of your experience depends on the person who's taking care of you. So for this review I'm only rating Jessica. I got there late and was sure I'd have to either reschedule or wait. Nope. Jessica greeted me with a smile and made me feel at ease right away. To make a long story short... I have unruly curly, frizzy hair... I got the Keratin Treatment to help with my stubborn hair. Jessica was amazing! My hair has never ever been straighter and looked naturally straight. I purchased a Groupon for $125.00 worth of services. Instead of the keratin treatment that other reviewers got, I went for a much needed cut and "color me punk" hair color. I've had a history of bad cuts and unwilling to listen stylists. My hair has made me queen of frizz. Despite buying any products stylists put in front of me, my hair was still a mess. The problem was no one listened...until I met Doug. Doug is my hair savior. On my first visit, I felt he gave me the attention of someone that normally spent big $$ and time with him instead of a Groupon holder. He listened to all my hair concerns & stylist complaints, told me his plan of action & executed it with fantastic results. My "punk" color was purple and it lasted 2 months *unheard of for funky colors.* Doug didn't sell me any products but told me what I needed for my hair. I found it and my hair has been frizz-free since then. All this started in July and I've been going to Doug every 2 months for changes in color. I just got my hair done a few hours ago and have received so many compliments that I have not been able to wipe off this silly grin from my face. I am giving BH Color Bar because I walked away with a 5-star color job, thanks to their artist, Doug. We had a brief discussion on what I wanted for my hair, and even though I initially walked-in there expecting a full head of highlights, he made a few comments/recommendations which included "it'll be hot," "pops of color," "it's all about contrast," and "it'll be hot," and somehow, I was nodding my hair and saying, "okay, yeah-- that sounds good. Why don't you just work your magic?!" He ended up giving me half-set of highlights (thin, bronze/coppery streaks) on and around the crown and he squirted some brown dye to neutralize my grown-out roots to blend in my base color (which was a brighter and lighter, more reddish tone of medium/light brown). 2 hours later, I walked out with a mane full of natural blend of golden/auburn based with wispy-thin sun-touched highlights framing my face like shining freckles (the cute kind). I don't know why Yelp filtered my review that I wrote a year ago, so I'm going to try again. I went to see Malcolm because of a Groupon but have stayed because of the great work he does. I've just had my sixth haircut from him and I am thrilled. He immediately got what I wanted and has given me the best haircuts I've ever had. I've been looking for years for someone who can work with me because my hair is difficult and the style I like is not conventional. He's not only talented but also an incredibly nice man. I won a free haircut at a fundraising event months ago, but I was hugely pregnant and not willing to drive out to an almost "color" only salon and sit in the fumes. I waited until my daughter was three months old to book my appointment and the receptionist was accommodating and friendly on the phone. I was in and out in less than 45 minutes. Malcolm is phenomenally skilled with a pair of scissors and made delightful conversation about his own children while he snipped away.
