LOVE THIS PLACE. Yen was amazing. She was very honest and upfront with my expectations. I wanted to go from black Asian hair to a blonde transitional ombre. She told me that to get to blonde, it would be difficult from starting from a dark color, but the result was beyond what I expected. I am so happy with the outcome!! The whole process took 2 hours but it includes the cut, color, and shampoo/conditioning. The cut and color was $68 as mine took extra work to go blonde, but she charged my sisters $58 for their brown highlights. Everything is priced very reasonably here. Actually, she could charge more for the quality! Family works there as well and they are all great. They help out their mom (Yen) and it makes the environment very warm. The place is clean and well kept. They offer many services here. I'm definitely coming back and recommending friends! Yen was very nice and it is pretty inexpensive compared to many places in Portland, but probably not the best if you want a natural blonde balayage. The first two pictures are pictures that I showed Yen what I wanted and described a blendable natural light brown to blonde balayage and emphasized I didn't like it streaky and wanted it seamless. It seemed like she understood. The third picture is how it turned out and I don't hate it, but it wasn't really what I was looking for. I'd like it to be a little more blended in the back. Also, I've have my hair bleached many times over the years and my hair has never felt this bad ever. It's very rough, tangley, doesn't brush out well, it feels sticky while washing it. It has never felt gross before and I just want to grow it out and get it chopped. It was $72 though so very reasonable. The cut was good too but I just wanted a little trim. read more

Yen & Hallie are great at what they do & since they own the salon so they don't have to rob you to make money...I've gone to so many different salons over the years and rarely have my heavy highlights come out the way I want them to. I seem to always end up spending $150/$200 for it & sometimes spend an entire day/afternoon in the salon. Here I was in & out in 2 hours. That time frame/price included a full head of light blonde highlights, shampoo, deep conditioner, toning, blow out, straining iron & cut. Highlights there start at $50... I paid $75 after I insisted that I do so after she was going to charge me the price she had quoted on the phone ($58). I knew she did waaay more than she expected when I talked to her on the phone but she still honored the price she had told me before my visit. They were so gracious & a pleasure to be around. Everyone in the salon swore by her and have been going to her for decades. Their salon is clean and bright. She didn't try to sell me anything but they do have salon products available that I have to assume are not overpriced like they normally are elsewhere. I will probably never go anywhere else again & will be in next week to get my nails done! read more

This is the ONLY place I will go to get my hair done in Oregon. I moved here a little over a year ago and when I found Yen I was hooked. With traffic she is almost an hour drive from where I live but she's so worth it. The price is unbelievable (seriously too good to be true), the service is great, the color is AMAZING and the cut is always what I ask for. I can't recommend this place enough but please don't come here because I want it all to myself. :) Only criticism is that there is always a wait, appointment or not. I love Yen & her sister, Halle! I've been coming here for over 4 years and have never had a cut/color that I wasn't thrilled with. Yen does such a great job with color, and she's given me great advice about what length/hair style would look best with my face. Sometimes you have to wait 15+ minutes after your original appointment time before she can get started, but it's because Yen is masterfully taking care of multiple customers at a time to keep her prices low. I wish I could leave a better review, but I can't. I've been here twice as I live close by and I wanted something on the cheaper side but not supercuts cheap, y'know? First time I went in, I was immediately overpowered by the smell of chemicals in the salon, which were way way stronger than any other I've been in, and spent the next half hour after my scheduled appointment time sitting in the waiting area trying not to cough. I asked for a reverse ombre and was nervous the whole time as Yen worked on me and another lady while two younger girls juggled me. It turned out pretty alright for the price so I left happy. This was a year ago. However, on my recent trip to this salon I wanted to try a copper ombre. So I went through the chemical smell torture again and waited for about 40 minutes after my appointment time to start. I showed Yen the picture I had and all seemed well and she got to work. She once again was juggling me and other few clients but I was trusting that it would turn out well considering last time. Unfortunately not. I asked for copper and got brassy blonde against my dark brown hair and the ombre was noticeably not very blended or even, with faint horizontal lines in the back. I also did not get my hair styled like we talked about, with one of the younger girls drying my hair immediately after washing it as Yen got started on another person. I was not able to see myself until the very end as I was spun away from the mirror (On purpose? Who knows...) and I was just in shock. I just paid the $68 dollars and left quickly since I knew that I only lived five minutes away so I could at least willpower myself enough to wait till I got home to cry... Yen seems very sweet but also seems a little overwhelmed, what with the long waits and the fact that both times I've gone she was handling multiple people. If you don't want to pay $150 dollars for a haircut and are feeling brave this is an alright choice, but if you're like me and your hair is important to you just bite the bullet and schedule with a more expensive salon as the mental trauma and humiliation of having to wear this for the next few weeks before being able to book a color correction isn't worth it. read more

I like my hair very blonde with a few small natural brown highlights and no other hair stylist has been able to nail the perfect color like Yen does! Came back to see Yen for my usual touch-ups and highlights. And of couse, the beautiful Yen did her magic--again! She seriously has a talent for coloring and highlighting!! I've been going to Yen at Beyond Beauty for years and it's more than just her cheap prices that keeps me coming back. I do not trust ANYONE else with my hair for coloring and highlighting OR cutting. She ALWAYS knows what colors and cut works best for me and for that season. She graciously squeezed me in at the last minute on Wed night 'cause I have a wedding in San Fran to go to this weekend. Yen knows the usual coloring and highlighting I like but this time, I noticed that my highlights were darker than usual. I was a bit hesitant about it after we were done, but definitely did not complain 'cause I know that although I may not be crazy about the coloring and highlighting or cut at that time, it will look fabulous the next day or so--I don't know why that is, but it seriously DOES! So of course, the day after under natural light.. I looked at the coloring again and it's a beautiful warm caramel color that complemented very well with my summer tan. I LOVEEEEE IT!! I went to Yen about a week ago. She is cheap and uses the least amount of product she can to save money. She has no manners, She literally won't do what you ask her, and she won't fix it either, she insists on charging you for something she didn't do right in the first place. I literally went to Aveda, the beauty school, to fix what she did and they laughed at her "work". She's a joke and I wouldn't recommend anyone to go to her. read more

I come from California and it was never so difficult finding an inexpensive Asian hair salon. I had to do some research to find this place but Im so glad I did. I made an appointment the day of hoping to get in at 1PM but she couldn't take me in until 4:30PM. No problem. It's in between two car dealerships and it sucked finding a place to park. Yen, the one woman hairstylist, was just finishing up with highlights and a cut when I got in. She also had two other clients that had solution in their hair already. I had originally come in for just a cut but when I saw that lady with fresh highlights I had to ask. She was so busy I felt bad but I asked anyway and she was able to squeeze me in for it.
