My go to guy for Middle Eastern food is on vacation so I tried this place! Staff is friendly, portions are good, prices are reasonable, and food is decent. Meats are cooked on a flat top, not a charcoal grill. Not a whole lot of seasoning on the chicken or beef that I had on Hala's platter. They forgot my kafta so I can't comment. Gyro was okay. Hummus and tabbuli were good. Wouldn't make a special trip, but will certainly stop by again if in the area. Try it! read more

The most authentic gyros you're going to get in Jersey! They're all so nice and the food is so fresh. I've never experienced a gyro like this before. Here's the deal, after passing by this place several times with long lines over 10 people outside the door, I decided to check it out without consulting anyone or Yelp! This is a great place for a quick bite on the run. It is small but delicious. With just enough space inside for four people to order from the counter, grab their food and go. The place is known for its falafel but I was interested in the chicken shawarma and baklava. The shawarma was perfectly cooked and seasoned in a warm pitta filled with pickled veggies and tahini. The gyros in my opinion would be a great option to explore and is fairly big (4 out 5). The establishment is very small, no seating. It's a take out spot only. So don't expect to sit down and have a meal. You can expect to get good food from here ordered to go in a timely fashion. In the area for work, got a Phillysteak steak. Ordered over the phone and got there in 5 minutes. Had to wait 2 minutes and I was out the door. It's a grab and go type place, looks like they had some regulars. The cheesesteak was pretty good, I would definitely come back again. The prices are fair. Shawarma, according to Wikipedia, is "an Arabic rendering of Turkish cevirme 'turning', in reference to the rotisserie-cooked nature of the meat, which 'turns' around an axis." Put in layman's terms it's meat cooked on a spit. What I got from Beyond Pita was something else. And that is why I was disappointed with my most recent visit. Now I haven't stopped by this hole-in-the-wall for quite some time. For no particular reason, I totally forgot that this tiny store existed. Watching Marvel's The Avengers brought back some memories. The scene at the end of that movie where the Avengers are eating shawarma reminded me that I made my way to Beyond Pita back then, so I thought it fitting that I would make that trip once more. I was hoping to satisfy my craving for some shawarma but alas all I got was disappointment. I had opted to get the beef shawarma. As far as I could tell the shawarma was not cooked on a spit rotisserie-style rather on top of a flat stove. The flavor therefore could not be developed and worse the meat was chewy and rubbery. The whole concoction was placed in a rather flimsy pita bread that could not hold everything in it. After only a couple of bites, the whole dish fell apart. There's simply too much in the pita for it to stay together. There's tomatoes, cucumber, onions, and sauce upon sauce. I don't mind making a mess when it comes to street food but in this case it was unwanted and unflattering. What really got me though was the lack of flavor. I expected to be wowed by some middle-eastern flavor but all I got was tahini and marinade. I was really hoping to satisfy what I wanted the most after watching Avengers. Unfortunately, Beyond Pita was not able to do that for me. read more

Amazing prices, amazing food, wonderful staff, long hours, good location. Only problem is no dining room and only takes cash. Which is probably a good thing because I would no broke and eat three meals there. And they have food that meet three meals. It's next to my work so super convenient. Today I had a falafel pita sandwich. It was INCREDIBLE. I'm unsure if I'm just starving, but I'm pretty sure it's the best falafel I've had in the states. Usually I get some soup or another. They're all good. All of them. I haven't had a gyro yet, but I bet it'll be killer. I'll let you know. Middle Eastern fast food and a $6 movie on a Tuesday night in Montclair go together like tahini and falafel! I think I found my new weekly ritual! Tiny place you can usually spot a block away because of the line out the door! Tuesday nights aren't that bad so our order of falafel sandwiches, a side of mixed olives and a piece of baklava (to snack on during the movie later!) was ready in just a matter of minutes. There is outdoor seating available but I prefer to sit on the church steps next door and do a little public theater piece I call "Tahini vs. Shirt". Spoiler alert: tahini always wins. The extra napkins in your bag are given to you for a reason. Favorite part of the falafel: pickles buried under those giant falafel nuggets, soft pita, and tons of tahini slathered on top of it all. Decent enough. My main gripe is not with the quality of the food, but the craftsmanship. The wraps will - without fail - fall apart after the first three bites. That means I will no longer be dining on my take out falafel wrap to go, but diving in with a fork and knife, ditching its (now useless) edible transportation device. Well, its not a complete fail. Overall, the food is pretty good.. but I have had way better. For under ten dollars, you can dine on some pretty good middle eastern street fare that is literally enough two meals. But its just not my favorite. Falafel Hut is without a doubt a more charming place that creates a superior falafel/lamb/steak/gyro. Beyond pita = NOT the worst, however. I can understand your preference for sloppy street meat... But it's a frustrating experience, for sure. By comparison to their rival, their lamb and beef just doesn't do it for me. The meat is tougher, often chewy and not cut to magical little bite size portions. And if the meat is too large, not as tender, and the portion is greater than what the wrap can handle...IT FUCKING FALLS APART. I'm serious, I want to eat my god damn wrap without having to worry if a piece of lamb is going to splatter on my clothes. Desserts and snacks are delectable, and the owner seems like a good guy. The pita is stuffed with a generous helping of lettuce tomato and pickles, and the whole thing is topped off with a slathering of that white sauce! Firstly it's not Shawarma as it's not made on the rotisserie, Secondly the meat is rubbery (in the case of chicken it's a strong turmeric flavor that's not very tasty), thirdly the sauce doesn't have flavor and lastly the place only takes cash. A total hole in the wall, with the freshest ingredients (pickles, tomatoes, lettuce and fries!), the guy running the store went out of his way to accommodate me. Gave me two slices of pita for my lamb platter (yes, the ones that actually open up!), and a wink and a smile. I doused the whole thing with hummus and tzatziki. Good times! Very tasty falafel and schwarma and very reasonably priced. Super quick and friendly service as well. This is no sit-down spot, unless you want to eat outside. My pita was about twice the size of what you'd get at Mamoun's and was filled with actual falafel, and not the lettuce/tomato filler I usually come across. I only have one negative thing to say about this place after a visit here with my husband, but I'll save that for the end. The food here he super affordable, delicious, authentic, well seasoned, fast, and the service is friendly. My husband loved his gyro and I loved that they had so many special platters, so we had the opportunity to try their hummus, babaganoush, and tabouli, chicken, kofta, and lamb. The tabouli is phenomenal - it tastes great with the lamb and the kofta. And the hummus is amazing, creamy and just the right levels of garlic and lemon. We didn't even mind that there was no seating inside for a few reasons: we came for takeout, and there are so many parks in Montclair that you could easily find a nearby spot to sit and have a delightful little Mediterranean picnic! My one complaint: they gave us our pitas in the plastic bag they came in from their vendor... Womp womp! Driving by, my eyes caught the neon "Shwarma" on the window of this nondescript establishment (a word that immediately triggers my hunger) and I asked my wife to remind me to check it out one day. A week later she did, and I was a little cautious as we drove into Montclair. But HOLY S**T, this place is amazing!!!! I never would eat falafel over Shwarma if you paid me....come to think of it I never really liked falafel at all. THIS IS THE BEST FALAFEL I HAVE HAD IN 31 YEARS ON THIS PLANET!! While that might not seem like a big statement to most, but I don't recall having falafel this good in Israel. I would also like to thank the owners who have been nothing shy of amazing with the warmth and hospitality they offer. I discovered this place about a month and a half ago and have been there 5 times so far...every time tasting better than the last. I lived around the corner for the last 4 years and never went into this place, assuming that Halal cards in NY would be better than anything out there in terms of Middle-Eastern food. I love this place. I eat here at least once a week for quick and delicious takeout. Love the salads, cheesesteak, and gyros. I probably would eat here more often if it wasn't cash only. The only (minor) issue I have is that they don't wash their vegetables before using them. I have seen them take romaine lettuce and cucumbers right out of the package and use them multiple times. I usually only try to go here once a month because sometimes falafel turns into feel awful after a while. But this is, hands down, the best falalel i've ever had. I've had falafel from Mamoun's, Ibby's, and a few random spots in the city. Also, Falafel Hut in Upper Montclair comes close, but this is the winner. Not only is their falafel the best, but they've got the best baba ganoush and hummus I've ever had. The prices are a little higher than, say, Mamoun's, but the portions are also a lot bigger so it balances out. The only thing that I wish they'd do better is take time when assembling their sandwiches. I always end up needing to use 400 napkins, and the tahini is only on the top so by the end of the sandwich you're left with a dry, disappointing bite and guilt for using a tree's worth of napkins to clean up the mess. The owner of this place is surly when you first start going there, but then he warms up to you and is a really nice, friendly guy. And he remembers your order a lot and is really accomdating. It's the best hole-in-the-wall joint in town and the best falafel i've ever had. Do it. read more
