Stopped in for a quick bite and ordered the hummus as an appetizer which was good but could have used a touch more garlic, salt and lemon. But it was very creamy. For dinner I had the chicken kebab with yogurt and that was yummy. I especially liked the charred green pepper on the side. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the spices all blended well together. The interior is very nicely decorated and the service was great. Need to go back to try some other dishes. read more

The ambiance of Toros is delightful. Weather permitting there's a lovely back patio. The restaurant itself has beautiful lamps and decor. Service is prompt and professional. The issue is the food is good but not great. Certainly some place I'd go.if I wanted mid-eastern food, but there are other similar restaurants at the same prices that are better The eggplant with tomato sauce was fresh and bright. The bread is hot from the oven and tasty. The bronzino was a goodly sized portion but otherwise not the best balanced in flavors. A traditional dish, Hunkar Begendi, chunks of lamb, or chicken , on pureed eggplant didn't quite hang together. The lamb was tender but the eggplant puree was lacking it to robust taste and a bit thin. Overall somewhat disappointing. So very pleasant place with good, solid but not outstanding food. read more

Toros was the site of our lunch before catching a ballet nearby, and with so many great restaurant options in the area, we were a bit stumped on where to go. After I compiled a list of the best sounding spots, my friends helped us settle on Toros, because we wanted a fresh, mediterranean meal. The flavors were on point and they were not shy about portions. We ordered stuffed cabbage, chicken skewers, and hummus, and they brought out a huge plate of house salad and buttery rice with slivered carrots. The chicken was charred and cooked to perfection and the stuffed cabbage had me wondering why I ever doubted this dish. Our food came out promptly and our server was super nice. The space is very clean, a little rustic, and so cozy for lunch or dinner. I'm so glad we landed here! read more

The first time I tried Toros was on Uber eats and was pleasantly surprised. The food was amazing and arrived at the perfect temperature. The meats and grains were seasoned so well. Grilled chicken tends to be dry especially when in kebab form but these were not. We also ordered salad, lebni, hummus, and moussaka. The lebni was so creamy, garlicky, and flavorful. The moussaka was also very tasty. The hummus was a little underwhelming but the rest of the meal made up for it. Even the complementary bread was warm and a nice addition. We enjoyed Toros's so much that we ordered takeout again the next day and then dined in the same weekend for a birthday celebration. I recently visited Toros with some Turkish friends and family (it's always a good sign when Turkish folks recommend a Turkish place, right?). I'm truly grateful we found it! The ambience is warm and ornate--truly out of a story book! The food was absolutely incredible all around. Let's start with the bread, which blew me away. We had to take some to go--it was that good! They make it fresh in another one of their locations and you can certainly tell it's their own. Great flavor, fluffiness, and crust. Next up, we ordered the hummus which was creamy and delicious (especially with the bread!). After that, we got the shepherd's salad which was refreshing, well-seasoned, and was gone by the end of the meal! I tried the moussaka as my entree which had a rich flavor and came with the most fantastic rice and bulgar. My brother tried the kebab entree and WOW. The seasoning on the meat left me speechless. My mother's vegetarian dish and friend's fish dish were pretty good, albeit not as "wow-ing" as the other food. If you come here, I highly recommend trying out the kebab--you'll thank me!! The service was attentive, albeit a bit cold and curt in demeanor... I see other reviewers had a similar experience. However, I have to give props to our server who spoke Turkish with our family friends, who are from Turkey originally--I could tell it meant a lot to them. Solid, friendly Turkish restaurant. Has a neighborhood vibe and a relaxed atmosphere. Food is good even if not overly spectacular. Enjoyed the lamb which was tender but plating could have been a bit more appealing. Our shared dips were good. Generally everyone enjoyed their mains and we found Toros to be a solid choice for casual gatherings. Parking at back of this Upper Montclair restaurant is a very nice feature in a town that's a bit notorious for terrible parking. Reasonably authentic Turkish restaurant on Valley Road in Montclair. Outdoor seating is quite pleasant, indoor is a bit stuffy but okay. The whole fish was big and well cooked. The moussaka tasted authentic, though not quite spicy enough for my taste. The baclava tasted home made, as it should. (One of my criteria for any good Turkish restaurant is that they make their own baclava.) Turkish coffee was appropriately muddy. Service was prompt, but rather impersonal. Last evening, I took my partner out to dinner here for a special occasion. We've been fans of the original Paterson location for years, and have also enjoyed times at Clifton, but this was our first time dining at the Upper Montclair location. With it being a Friday night, I called the restaurant earlier that day to place a reservation (just in case it was busy and there may be a wait for a table - I wasn't sure). Later that day, when we walked inside Toros, a woman greeted us and lead us through the restaurant to the patio where she gave us an option of two two-person tables. After were were seated, we were given menus and bread/butter and a bottle of water were placed on our table. When you think of Turkish cuisine, you think of the meats - doner, kebabs, etc. However, it's possible to enjoy a delicious meal as a vegetarian...My partner is vegetarian. Note - Technically, there is only one vegetarian entrée on the menu here, but there's a whole selection of delicious hot and cold appetizers that are vegetarian friendly. For example, below what is what we ordered (minus, my Adana Kebab entrée - my favorite) VEGETARIAN-FRIENDLY DINNER ORDER - Coban Salata - they'll ask if you want the feta cheese on it or not - Patlican Soslu - one of our favorites. so good with bread... tomato-based, an alternative to the other eggplant based apps that have a smoked/smokey flavoring (partner is not into smokey flavor profile) - Sigara Boregi - my partner's favorite app of the night - cheese-filled crispy filo with the little salad on the side - Mucver - pan-fried zucchini fritter - fresh, light, refreshing with the yogurt and dill - Sebzeli Guvec (vegetable dish) - under traditional Turkish cuisine on menu Other vegetarian-friendly appetizer options of note are hummus and falafel, but we have these regularly, so we passed last night. The Coban Salata is a must. It was simple, crunchy, and deliciously fresh. I've never had fried liver the way this Arnavut Cigeri was served. It was breaded which I found a bit unusual, as it's usually only pan-fried with the seasonings & herbs. It was still somewhat addicting, just not what I expected. The Small Mixed Appetizer Platter was great for sharing among the 4 of us. The stuffed eggplant stood out to me the most. I'm a sucker for combination platters as it gives me the chance to try a bunch of items at the same time, so the Toros Karisik was perfect. I particularly liked the izgara kofte and adana kebab. Their rice is also unbelievably buttery and soft! I absolutely loved it. As we were finishing up, they gave us some complimentary desserts which is always appreciated. Ordered few cold appetizers to start with - Hummus, baba ganoush and fresh bread. The bread was fresh, but the spreads were a total let down and lacked any flavor. For entrees, they had only 1 veg dish which I still ordered on the staffs recommendation - Zucchini pancakes - was alright but lacked any salt or spice. Steve A: 5 stars! Exemplary! I wanted authentic Turkish cuisine and went for a hot appetizer and an entree on those lists - plenty to choose from. Right away some nice warm sesame bread came out, along with water for the table. Service was very personable and attentive. First, the içli kofte came to me, wheat bulgur fried deep and filled with lamb, served with a nice yogurt sauce. The sauce helped cool off the appetizer so I could eat it, and there was the perfect amount of sauce for the three little fried dudes. They also sat in a nice little salad to give me some veggies with my meal. Delightful. Perfect. Speaking of perfect, as I finished that, out came hunkar begendi, billed as "baked chunks of lamb served on eggplant puree". First of all, it wasn't baked lamb, it was perfectly cooked, perfectly tender lamb chunks with not a hint of extra fat. Second of all, there were plenty of lamb chunks served HOT HOT HOT, and there was plenty of puree. Third of all, the puree may have been cheesy. It sure seemed cheesy. I'm a huge fan. Wow horrible service So we sat down and ordered apps and my wife asked for hot pepper and the waitress laughed and said why do u need it? Then our salad had a black hair in it, we told the waitress and my daughter said it has black hair we don't have black hair, waitress responded I don't either. She never apologized about the hair. Found this little spot on a motorcycle ride today and stoped for lunch. We grabbed some beer at a liquor store down the street and sat outside in The Mews. Was completely surprised at how fabulous this was. We had the lunch special which was endless and not expensive at all. Red lentil soup-a puree thin soup that was light and flavorful. Very nice. Shepard's salad-a must. Hummus and my favorite Lebneh. Yum! Fresh dill and parsley -very fresh and really wonderful with their bread. Then on to the mains. Tavuk Kebap -a gtound chicken kebab that blew my mind. Sumac and garlic and this Turkish pepper-not spicy bit just savory and made ground chicken gourmet.
