Black couple denied service. There were 5 empty tables when we walked in the restaurant at 8:03pm (note the place closes at 9pm). The server first says they have no space as they are booked. I make mention that there are 5 empty tables. I confirm they close at 9pm and he states this is correct. He then proceeds to say they are running out of food and only have enough for the people who made reservations. It is hard to believe that 15 people are coming at the last minute to order large quantities of food. I was truly looking forward to enjoying this place because the Yelp reviews seem to rave about the cozy atmosphere, wonderful service, and the fresh food preparation. But although I found the restaurant to be cozy and my server to be friendly, the food though freshly prepared was just average at best. Let me explain. So, after perusing the menu, I saw a few Mediterranean staples, such as, baba-ghanoush, lentil soup, and a beef Shawarma entrée. So I decided to order all three of those items. Now, let me tell you not only was I excited to taste the food here, but I truly wanted to experience what a majority of people on yelp said about this place and its food. But I soon discovered that you truly cannot trust other peoples opinions when it comes to food. You just literally have to try it yourself to see if it even resembles that cuisines standard benchmarks. Well anyway, let me get to what I thought about the food. The lentil soup it's pretty tasty, but it would serve lukewarm. The baba-ghanoush was also tasty, but the pita bread was stale and void of any flavor. And as for the so-called Beef Shawarma entrée, it was literally chopped up cubes of beef! Nothing near to what a standard Shawarma entrée should resemble, or let alone taste like! To be quite honest, I was so disenchanted with the Shawarma entrée that I asked my server to take it away and just give me the bill. I was ready to go! But my server genuinely saw my disappointment with this so-called Beef Shawarma that she pleaded with me to try another entrée. So I asked her to recommend another entrée to me. And she recommended the Skewered Chicken entrée. So, I caved in and went ahead and ordered this Skewered Chicken entrée. But I should've just went with my gut feeling and just should have paid the bill and left. I say this because it took forever for them to prepare this Skewered Chicken entrée and I mean forever! And this is on a Tuesday night with only two other people inside the restaurant, so literally this place was empty! (Not sure if the Cook made me wait for this dish out of spite for me sending back the first entree but that is my suspicion). Anyway, I got my server's attention and she told me if I could wait a few more minutes because they were plating my dish and that it will be out shortly. And that literally took another 10 minutes. To say that I was eager to get out of this place would be an understatement. I was standing up literally putting on my jacket when the dish finally reached my table. My server asked me kindly to return to my seat and to try her recommended entrée. So I gave her the benefit of the doubt and I did so. The Skewered Chicken entrée was a little better than the so-called Beef Shawarma entrée, but really nothing to write home about. What a letdown! I really wanted to give this restaurant one star, but my server really showed genuine concern about my dining experience. And I truly appreciated that. And so as for my take on Le Souk of Montclair NJ. I would caution spending your hard earned money at this restaurant. The food is mediocre at best and there are a lot of better options in the Montclair area for Mediterranean food. read more

We were drawn in by the colorful and cozy atmosphere, and wow--we are so glad we happened to find this place! The mint tea was refreshing, and everything we tried was so fresh and perfectly balanced. I ordered the special brunch and was stunned by how much food was on the platter. My husband enjoyed the combination of pomegranate seeds with the beef shawarma; there was ample pita bread included. A unique hidden gem in a bustling area of Montclair. It is small and cozy and easy to miss but definitely worth the dining experience ! My husband and I went here for Valentine's Day and we were pleasantly surprised! It wasn't overly crowded and we loved that there was no price fixed menu / extra charge ! We ordered Muhammara dip with pita to start and falafel. Both were fresh and delicious . For main course we had the beef shawarma and chicken kabob . It was wonderful, seasoned well , and even the salad was fresh . We also tried their house hot tea which took a while to make but it was flavorful and delicious ! The price is very reasonable, you can tell they make everything fresh and it is authentic . The menu has a lot of gluten free and vegan options which we both loved ! This place has amazing middle eastern food, and I highly recommend it! Everything I tried was so fresh and delicious, and the owners are the friendliest people. The monk baba ganoush with pita bread was really refreshing and the green peppers added a nice crunch. My friend and I tried the pomegranate chicken and homemade beef shawarma, both were super flavorful, and the hummus served with each dish was also really good. I have been passing this place for years and never noticed this delicious gem! Small but an absolutely one of a kind Mediterranean cafe! They have a great variety of menu options, drinks/teas and even authentic handcrafted bags for purchase. We tried a bunch of appetizers, Baba Ganoush, Stuffed Grape Leaves, traditional Hummus and Falafel! For the entree, we got a Chicken Kabob (which was definitely a great portion for two people). While walking around Watchung, Le Souk caught my eye. With its intricate decor and almost other worldly feel, there is no way to miss this charming establishment. There was both outdoor and indoor seating but on this particular day I was taking my order to go. I ordered a Hibiscus iced tea,, and since they lovingly make the drinks to order I had a little bit of time to wait and look around the store. In addition to food (including salads, small bites and desserts), Le Souk also sells artistic wares including hand made bowls, purses with Van Gogh art on it and Bamboo notebooks. It was like hanging out in a small art gallery while waiting for your drink. I took the tea to go and it was *delicious*. It had just the right balance of Hibiscus flavor with a tiny bit of sweetener. It was also really smooth, something not all tea shops manage. It was rather late when I visited Le Souk so I really hope to go back at an earlier hour to maybe have a meal there and enjoy some more fantastic tea! read more

3.8 Stars for excellent and authentic flavors with some bumpy execution. I really need to return to this place for in-person dining. Besides the space being stunningly beautiful, there was something really lost in translation by packing and driving this food. We decided to treat ourselves to a pretty extensive dinner and ordered half the menu. A couple of dishes weren't correct (which we didn't realize until we got home) and this amazing, small business was just way to overwhelmed to try to fix the error. So while we didn't get to try the falafel waffle nor the chicken fatteh I can say some stand out flavors were: the fava bean salad (complex yet simple, beans cooked perfectly), the chicken schwaram sandwich (juicy and bursting with flavor), the eggplant fatteh (a unique blend of roasted eggplant, spices and diced pita bread held into a type of bread pudding with tahini sauce and all of the various humuses flavors (Tumeric, avocado) were so perfectly home-made, they put store-bought brands to shame. By far the stand-out winner was the Pomegranate Chicken. I can't even describe the luscious and savory, yet sweet, yet not, flavor of this chicken, and I'm sad we devastated the helping because I know it would have been even better the next day. Unlike other reviewers, the portion sizes were ok (not large) and a lot is lost in transport (humus getting water from condensation, fatteh's a bit dried out, etc.). I would also warn people to give the restaurant WAY more time than indicated on the app you are using, and don't bother calling. They are just keeping their head's above water, so give them, and yourself, plenty of wiggle room. But the flavors are extremely authentic and homie and comforting. I'll be back! read more

Since Le Souk is a store in Watchung Plaza, I never really thought of it as a restaurant, but everything in the mezzes section is good, from the fava bean salad to the beet salad, dandelion salad, and the hammarah (red pepper compote with walnuts). The falafel waffle, an ingenious way to get more fried edge on a falafel, is terrific. Chicken kabob: excellent, with a tahini sauce. No baklava this evening, but the sesame cookies and Turkish delight go wonderfully with coffee. Incidental bonus: The woman who cooks is quite friendly and a fun conversationalist.
