I enjoy both the food and the atmosphere at this Mediterranean restaurant on the northern side of Upper Montclair. My favorite entree is the vegetarian platter for two, called Vegan Strong, which includes freshly prepared tofu, hummus, delicious bread, and a variety of vegetables. The spicing is tasty and distinctive without being overwhelming. The desserts here, mostly different varieties of healthy cakes, are also top notch. The smoothies are excellent; my favorite is the protein bomb. The atmosphere includes many local people enjoying a break from their jobs or school assignments. It's a cute cafe with a nice area to dine in. They have good hummus and falafels!! Loved the falafel bowl that came with hummus and pita, pita was so soft and so tasty. I also tried the chicken bowl, the rice was great and the chicken too but I liked the falafels way more than chicken and also their hummus more than the rice. Chose this restaurant from the many high reviews on Yelp. The reviews were correct and we had a casual and excellent meal at Mishmish. We dined here on Labor Day and although indoor dining had recently opened in NJ at 25% occupancy, there was only outdoor dining available. This was perfect as it was a pleasant evening and at the moment I am more comfortable with the outdoor dining option. Service was very good all night. Servers wore masks and gloves and the tables were set a good distance apart. The food was great also and the pita bread warm and the Hummus creamy. We enjoyed all our dishes but I especially liked the Lamb Meatball Shakshuka. This was packed with rich flavors and just tasted great. We would definitely go back to Mishmish and recommended when in Montclair. read more

We were planning on going to Mesob (which is our fav place in Montclair) but they were closed for lunch so decided to come to Mishmish instead as per yelp and friends recommendation. We love love love this place, the ambience the service the food everything. We ordered garlic fries, falafel hummus bowl and healthy mess salad bowl and chicken shawarma bowl. The garlic fries were really fresh and amazing, the falafel bowl was so so good with fresh falafel, chickpea, cucumber and tomatoes sitting on a bed of freshly made hummus. Also the pita was warm and so so soft that you could eat it plain without anything. The salad bowl was very healthy and since this one had a yogurt based dressing was very creamy and not too many calories. I would definitely come back once they are open for business after this corona pandemic. read more

Okay, finally tried Mishmish and have to say I'm very happy I did. What a great little spot in Montclair. On to the details... Location - a bit small but with enough accommodations to cycle through a crowd I feel due to how quick the service is. Parking is kinda tough though, but when isn't parking in Montclair tough? Service - these guys are great. They constantly checked on us to make sure everything was okay, made good suggestions on the food, and were quick. Food - man, gotta say I really liked my dish shakashura (did I spell it right?). All the flavors on my plate were just right, might be a bit strong for delicate palettes though (and if you have a delicate one, Mediterranean food might not be your best option). I couldn't get enough of the lamb sausages, and if I wasn't currently eating keto, I would've used the bread that came with my dish like a sponge to wipe up and eat at the stewed tomatoes! - the fried cauliflower was really good, liked the crunch on it, but could've used a bit more flavor in my opinion. - definitely need to come back for the salad, saw a few orders pass our table that made me absolutely envious! I've been wanting to come to Mish Mish for a long time and finally stopped in on a weekday afternoon for lunch. What was I waiting so long for? The menu had so many different options to choose from it was hard to select one option. The service was nice and attentive. On the specific day there was both indoor and outdoor seating and it was hard to decide which way to go. The inside was decorated very nice with different areas of seating to choose from. My friend and I both ordered from the lunch menu I got the shakshuka with lamb sausage and she got one of the hummus bowls. My meal was very tasty and very well-made but I fell in love with my friends meal a bit more. I can't wait to go back and try something else from the menu I would definitely return soon. read more

This is a cute, small cafe with excellent food. I got the falafel sandwich and it was such a big portion and had a really nice, strong blend of spices and flavors. I went with a group of friends and we all ordered something different, and everyone loved the dishes they ordered. 5/5 for the food. I would give the service a 3/5, mostly because of one staff member. There were a stack of chairs in the corner of the restaurant that people had started taking out to add a few extra chairs to a couple tables. She started going around and very rudely accused me of taking the chairs from the corner, stating that it's not allowed and then angrily grabbed one of the chairs (who my friend was initially sitting in but at this time was waiting in line to order) and took it away from the table. Literally don't know what her deal was but didn't appreciate her attitude and her taking it out on me. Plus, if you're not allowed to take chairs out, then just put a sign on the stack of chairs saying not to move them. read more

My friend and I decided to spend our monthly eating extravaganza in Montclair. I had previously enjoyed lunch at Mishmish and new that it would be a great place to share some small plates. Upon being seated, they provide bread and some quality olive oil, worth the carbs for sure. We ordered hummus, fried cauliflower, and the cigars as the three parts of our appetizer sampler. The hummus is perfect texturally and flavorful, the cigars were impossibly crisp with a great filling, and the fried cauliflower was perfectly breaded and tender and very good in the dipping sauces. For a second course we selected the shakshuka with lamb merguez sausage. It featured two poached eggs, an ample portion of sausage, and a sauce you won't stop eating until you see the plate. The service was pleasant and professional and if we weren't looking to eat our way through Montclair we would have gladly stayed for more dishes. Certainly worth returning to. This was a pretty good Mediterranean cafe that we stumbled upon while we were in Montclair over the weekend. We came here for a late lunch, around 1:45pm, and were seated immediately at one of the outdoor tables on the sidewalk. We were brought glasses of water and menu right after we sat down. We were quite hungry, so we ordered two appetizers, the smoked eggplant dip, and the fall hummus, in addition to our mains. The eggplant dip was good, but it didn't quite taste like baba ghanoush, which is what I thought it was supposed to be. The fall hummus was similarly good, but it came with pieces of roasted squash on top, which I initially thought was going to be mashed and mixed in with the hummus. The accompanying pita was soft and fresh. Our main dishes were brought out shortly after. My husband said his chicken shawarma was great. My lamb merguez shakshuka was good as well, but there was a small piece of eggshell that was in there. The pieces of lamb were thick and flavorsome. Staff were really friendly and we had no complaints about service. Staff are wearing masks, and masks are required indoors as well. They have several tables available for outdoor dining. read more

Fantastic Israeli-esque food in downtown Montclair. Really a 4.5/5 than a 4. After years of having this spot bookmarked, a friend and I grabbed an early dinner here. This place is small and gets packed fast so go early or make a reservation. The place is warm and cozy though may be a bit too cozy as we were on top of the table next to us. Service was good throughout (attentive but not like hovering) and they even provided some recommendations on the menu as my friend is a vegetarian. I got the chickpea and mushroom tajin over humus ($15) that came w/pita. Great combination of flavors with really authentic tasting humus. Vegan too which is a big plus. I also tried the labne tzatziki ($7) alongside which was also flavorful and fresh. I had plenty to take home as the portions are good size. My friend got the sabich which she LOVED alongside fries w/feta. The place does live up to the hype so I have to come back and try the brunch! read more

I could swear I've promoted this place to 5 star status but here it is. There have been some misses here, but overall everything is sharp as a ball point pen here. The food, the drinks, the service, the setting all have been great on recurring visits. Brunch is absolutely the best here but having had dinner here a couple times I was still very pleased how consistent they are particularly with the above mentioned praise. The highlight here for me is undoubtedly the Marinated Steak tacos. Expertly prepared the tacos are loaded with medium-well cooked steak, grilled caramelized onions, with some sliced cherry tomatoes thrown in and drizzled with aioli sauce. along with it are seasoned sliced "zataar" potatoes and scrambled eggs mixed with herbs and has a nice buttery taste along with it. Throw in some additional Harissa sauce and it's on. The whole entrée is plentiful, well presented and at a great value. Easily my favorite meal here. The drinks cold and hot are all great here to even the simple cup of joe which is "Jims Organic" coffee. Bold just how I like it even after adding a sweetener. The staff are always friendly here ready to accommodate and suggest selections. What I also like is it being an all around place to go, whether you're by yourself, with a small party 1-3 or a larger group. Of course you'd want to consider calling ahead but the setting allows for it and with everything mentioned, why wouldn't you want to come here. Just so everyone knows they are now the same as Marcel's bakery. We came here on a Friday night as a group of six. We got a nice table outdoors and took turns going into order. They brought her food out as if they came ready then we definitely ordered too much but it was all delicious. I got the falafel sandwich (even though it says it's a lunch special they had it for dinner) and it was delicious. We also got both the fries and za'atar potatoes and those are both great with the chipotle flavored Dipping sauce it came with. Salads and Shakshuka we're also great! We randomly got a side of the garlic spinach and it was better than we expected. We also got The grilled Havarti cheese and that was just divine I could eat a plate of that if I had to on my own. Chicken Shawarma Hummus bowl - 5/5 This bowl was full of hummus, topped with chicken shawarma, tahini, chickpeas, cabbage salad. And it also came with a side of pita bread. The pita was fresh and everything on the bowl was sooo delicious. I really like the chicken flavor, it was a perfect brunch dish. Shakshuka - 5/5 I had mushroom shakshuka, it was a perfect tomato sauce with loads of mushroom gravy topped with 2 eggs and grilled bread. You can also add lamb meatballs instead of mushrooms. I cannot forget the taste of this dish. I highly recommend these two dishes to order when at mishmish cafe. I heard that they have 2 sister cafes nearby, I would really like to try those as well. Came here for brunch. It's been my first time back since their renovations and menu change. Thoroughly enjoyed our brunch. Good prices and minimal/ no wait which is a plus for Montclair! Had the hummus, tiger shrimp sandwich and egg sandwich. Hummus was amazing. Sandwiches were good but a bit soggy. Fries are different since the menu change - smaller and crispier but delicious. Great service and good food. If you read my reviews I appreciate when food is fresh and not too salted. I believe their baba ghanoush was just that. Very smoky eggplant that wasn't over seasoned. The lentil soup was also solid. I loved the salad too but I felt a bit ripped off that they used chicken dark meat, thighs, which you know is cheap but charged a lot of money for it. Montclair is very lucky to have Mishmish Cafe in their town. I'd come here quite often if I lived nearby. I had the Lamb Merguez Sausage Shakshuka. I cannot resist Merguez and poached, runny eggs. My weaknesses! The sausage was crisp enough that it did not squirt when bit into. The eggs were perfectly running into the rest of the dish. The bread the dish comes with was so fresh and great for sopping up the entire plate. Very necessary because it'll get very salty without the bread. My friend ordered The Spread Sampler with herbed falafel, Turkish cigars, and smoked eggplant. She thoroughly enjoyed her food because she finished everything! I had one of her falafels and some of the smoked eggplant. Falafel was on point - crispy and seasoned just enough. Eggplant was creamy & chunky. Both dishes were very fresh. Mishmish is INCREDIBLE! I have never had a bad meal from there. Their food is so delicious and so creative. Over the pandemic, we have gotten premade meals from Mishmish. We always get the Vegan meal. It is amazing. It comes with large tofu curry, the best hummus I have ever had, bread, delicious rice, and a dessert. I finally got to try Mishmish without having to wait for a table on a Friday afternoon for lunch. Nothing on the menu REALLY interested me but I went with the hummus as our app and the mushroom and harissa shakshuka bowl. The hummus was good, although not the best I've ever tried. I did enjoy the whole chickpeas and fresh cilantro in it. My husband ordered the Moroccan meatball shakshuka bowl and I enjoyed it more than my mushroom bowl. Although, my bowl was very good. Not overly spicy but a nice kick. I enjoyed the sprinkled feta on both dishes. The reason I took one star off is because I didn't feel the wait staff was overly friendly and our server wasn't helpful with giving us recommendations since it was our first time there. Nonetheless, I'd like to try this place again for dinner. read more

Came here for some take out on Jan. 9th. We both ordered the chicken shawarma on hummus. What an excellent dish. The hummus gets a nice little boost from the very tender chicken and onions and the sauce. Even though I wanted to order the braised lamb on hummus bowl, I would gladly order this dish again. We shared some beets with lebne, which was good (crumbled feta would be a nice addition) an extra hummus for our hosts and a Greek salad... also very nice... which had a nice amount of feta on it. Well, hopefully this covid BS will go away soon and we can come and sit in here to enjoy the food a bit hotter than having to take it out and go home or somewhere else. Still... pretty sure we'll be back. I would have given 4 stars, but when I got to my son's house, I was made aware that there was no pita bread in the bag and too far to go back.
