Some of the reviews say "this place doesn't understand the customer service industry" which is just wild because BTB has been here my whole life, serving up good bagels and sandwiches at competitive prices. The people who work and own it are old school North Jersey -- the types of people who you see increasingly less of as yuppies price them out of town. It's not chic, bougie or self-consciously trying to be something other than what it is, which is a to-go breakfast/lunch spot, so I guess that's disorienting to people who are used to viral sandwich shops with grass walls or whatever. They make great breakfast sandwiches and are decent people. What do you want, a kiss on the lips? Go back to Brooklyn if you don't like it. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. Cleanliness is the issue here. While I ordered my bagel, the lady wiped the corners of her crusty lips I was about to say "are you washing your hands" but as soon as I opened my mouth she pulled out gloves. That's ok but not great. I went to check on my dog that was tied up outside. Two minutes later I walk back in and the gloves were off and she was handling my food. I just paid the $5 and threw it out. The service was also very bad! read more

The aroma from this bagel shop was so intoxicating and irresistible that I had to go inside. I got a plain bagel with cream cheese, and it reminded me of the bagels that I used to have when I was a kid. Crunchy on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside, no need to get it scooped. When I started to spend time in Montclair I think this may have been the only bagel option in town. It was for me anyway. I loved their bagels. There is usually a line out the door on Sundays, but they are good every day, so if you don't want to wait, don't go on Sunday. They make a mean breakfast bagel here and have a number of options. Over the years it has not changed much. I had a bagel here recently, first time in 2 years, and it tasted as good as always. Now though they are too big for me and I don't eat them often. But if you are in the area looking for a bite, this is a good place to get one. No seating. Street parking. read more

We moved from Brooklyn this summer and originally didn't give BTB a chance because of the reviews and because they didn't have tofu cream cheese (my wife and I are both very lactose intolerant). But we were excited to walk by recently and see a sign in the window that "tofu is back". Bagels really shouldn't be compared to the city or BK but BTB is truly as good as it gets in the suburbs. Crusty outside, chewy inside and light even if it looked dense. And, if you happen to be lactose intolerant or vegan, 3 types of tofu cream cheese! And a few signs that BTB are pros - 1) a few types are offered as regular or whole wheat (e.g. whole wheat sesame) 2) they asked me how I wanted the bagels bagged (I always like to separate the everything's or onions from the rest) 3) super quick service. had a couple of bagels sandwiches made and paid in just a couple of mins Maybe these negative reviews are stale, but we will definitely be back soon read more

I only wanted a coffee I waited patiently for 2 customers to be taken care of. As I waited no one acknowledged me while 2 ladies were helping one person. They could of told me sorry we will be right with you it was like I was not there. So as I turn to leave then she acknowledged me the older lady not the younger lady. As I walked away her response was O WELL! You know who you are. You have no customer service. I own a business so don't under estimate who walks in through your door. Very expensive and rude service. The woman (perhaps the owner) didn't acknowledge me even though no one else was there. I ordered 2 bagels with cream cheese, a muffin and small coffee and it was $25! The bagels were basic and the muffin was stale. With all the other bagel shops around, I wouldn't waste your money here. read more

Great bagel place in Upper Montclair! Tasty sandwiches quickly made to order. Awrsome bagels, always freshly made. We like their sandwiches better than sunrise (ratio of egg to meat to cheese is perfect) and even hot bagels abroad (which we also adore). They also do a LOT for the local schools. Family run, friendly staff, even if it gets crowded right after morning masses (the line gets long, but the wait is less than 10 minutes). There is very limited area to sit, but they are totally kid friendly. Love this place! read more

Love the bagels here and the staff. The bagels are boiled and baked and you can see them coming right out of the oven. there I nothing better than a hot freshly cooked bagel right from the oven. Their Taylor ham, egg, and cheese sandwiches melt in your mouth. If you're in the Montclair area, this is the bagel place to frequent! Allison and Shae, Perfect Bagel? Amazing? Guys, guys, stop! You're seriously misleading yelpers about the quality of the puffballs served up at BtB. You may think you know that makes a good bagel, but you don't. You over-rate this place cause you've never eaten the real thing. A real bagel is about 4" in diameter with a chewy crust having a slight resistance to the bite. The inside is not light and airy, it's somewhat dense and it's a little less chewy than the crust, and has a subtle malt flavor. Too many folks have purchased bagel making equipment and give it a go, but without knowledge of genuine bagel qualities, they'll never get it right. Most of them use regular flour instead of the malted type. Also, they let the dough rise too long and don't boil them enough (bagels are actually cooked by boiling. The oven is only to finish the crust!). This is unfortunately true of most, if not all, current bagel joints. Eat these white-bread characterless puff balls if you like, but don't call them bagels. You insult the real thing. read more

It's not just my opinion, I brought these bagels into work, many unprompted comments on how great they are & inquiries on where I bought them from. 5 stars hands down. $5 min. on credit cards btw. Favorite bagel place is Montclair. Great bagels. Line moves quickly, and they are pretty organized (for a bagel place). Friendly staff. Breakfast sandwiches are terrific. Only gripe is that they don't toast the bagels very well IMO so if you're getting a bagel & cream cheese to take home, toast it there...much better. I stopped in at Beyond the Bagel looking for a quick breakfast sandwich. Naturally, I ordered a Taylor Ham, Egg & Cheese on a plain bagel. First impression was that the bagel was made well! I see a lot of reviewers saying that this doesn't taste like a New York bagel....well, this isn't a New York bagel, it's a Jersey bagel and it wasn't half bad! The bagel was made well. Went there for the first time on a Saturday morning around 8:00 a.m. There was one person a head of me. The place was dimly lit, I could barely read the types of bagels. When I asked if they had cheddar bagels, the woman at the counter answered a sharp No. Bought my bagels, and barely had the money out of my wallet and she was grabbing the money out of my hands. No customer service, not the least bit pleasant. She was downright rude. There was no one else in the shop on a Saturday morning, which is surprising. The bagels are large, puffy, very flavorful with lots of seeds and seasonings poured on. They are on the high-calorie side, not my favorite, but certainly more than acceptable. I ordered a bagel with cream-cheese and lox, with tomato and onion. I noticed that the preparer was going to give me salmon that was at the end of the package, looking several days old and that was before her supervisor had gone to her apparently suggesting that they try to dump this stuff on me. When I said don't put that on the sandwich, I'll just take cream cheese, the owner started to telling me "don't get excited." I just left the store. It's by far the worst bagel store in the area, so I thought they would work for their customers. But they don't. read more

I've had bagels for here dozens of times they have always been fresh, a few days ago I ordered my food on a roll what a mistake it tasted like it was several days old. I brought it back to them about a half hour later having to make a few stop before sitting down for lunch, the woman working the front showed me a bag of rolls saying she just bought them, they were rolls that would be on a supermarket shelf with the bread, saying I thought you would be giving me fresh baked. I asked for a refund still speaking to the woman working the front before she could answer me a man who was sweeping the floor started to say very load NO REFUNDS saying it several times, the woman was very polite and said sorry no refunds, claiming it was store policy I asked to see where its posted, once again the man sweeping chimed in saying I DON'T HAVE TO POST ANYTHING, when I asked to speak to owner the woman claimed she was, asked who the man was she said also a owner. I was offered and took my food on a bagel, the woman also offered me free bagels that I did not take not wanting or looking for anything for free all I wanted was a refund for the very bad sandwich that was sold to me. read more

Went there for the first time today and asked for a ham egg and cheese. As she was cooking it I realized that they only put one egg in the sandwich (minimum should be 2) so I requested a second egg. The price for the breakfast sandwich is confusing. On the bored it reads that a egg cheese and meat is only $4 bucks but they charge you extra if you want deli ham. If I would have asked for Taylor ham it would have been less. All in all they are overpriced.... And i ended up spending almost $9 bucks for a breakfast sandwich and a juice. I definitely will not be returning. read more
