Recently I was at the First Saturday Arts Market on W 19th and after stopping by the booths I was in need for a haircut. Trusty yelp app, said there was a hair salon just a few blocks over. It was a beautiful day so I decided for a quick stroll. A few blocks down and I find Venus hair! I saw the yelp sticker on the door and I was sold. I walked in and they asked if I had an appointment. After I said no, they paused and said hey we can squeeze you in! I was really lucky. They seem to be always packed, but I just need a quick cut. The staff here is very skilled and super nice. I got one of my best haircuts, I mean my hair is simple but sometimes people still manage to screw it up, either too short or leaving strands uncut. If I'm in the area again I will be stopping by, this time I'll make sure to schedule ahead of time though. read more

I've only been once, but it was the most amazing haircut of my life. I had an appointment but still had to wait about 20 minutes. Becky did my hair, and she obviously knew exactly what she was doing. I asked her for a relatively complicated yet still similar to what I already had cut and she completely delivered. I couldn't be happier. I will definitely return! Maybe even for hi-lights next time. I first came here a few months back to get my super long, boring hair chopped to chin length--wasn't quite ready to commit to the pixie cut I so desperately wanted, so I figured going shorter would be a good start. The decor of this place threw me off a little. I'm an accountant at a pretty conservative firm, so when I saw the plastic heads with brightly colored, crazy wigs cramming the space, I thought I might have made a mistake. I had visions of walking out of there with a purple and gold asymmetrical cut and trying to explain to my boss how it happened. But I'm glad I stayed because Becky gave me the cute, low-maintenance cut that I wanted (with no purple). Shortly thereafter, on a family vacation overseas, I threw caution to the wind and got the pixie cut I'd been dreaming about. I was SO happy with that decision...until the high wore off and it occurred to me that I still had to find someone back home in Houston to maintain it for me. (Shoulda thought that one through a little more carefully.) It's not the kind of style that can be thrown up into a ponytail and hidden if it gets screwed up, so I was a little nervous about finding someone who would do a good job without making me look like a dude. I needn't have worried -- called to make an appointment with Becky again, who assured me that she enjoyed doing pixie cuts and, in fact, had one herself for many years. She gave me the cutest little pixie that I like even better than the original! Before I could describe to her the details I wanted, she had kind of already stolen the words out of my mouth. It's only been a day since I got the haircut, but already I've received a few compliments on it. I've never had *awesome* hair before, but thanks to Becky, I do now :) The atmosphere in here is pretty laid back, which is also nice. And I quit spending money on my hair and found myself going to one of those national chains where a different person cuts your hair each time you visit. That all stopped this past week when I made an appointment at Venus Hair. It's a small place and the decor in the salon, to say the least, is eclectic. It's as much of a neighborhood hangout as it is a salon. People were coming and going, dropping in to see what was up, the entire time I was there. As for my cut and stylist, I don't have all that much hair to work with anymore, but Venus did a great job. She explained what she was doing with my hair and why she was doing it. I was really surprised when I went in a couple of years ago (it had really great reviews back then as well). I just wanted a cut and yes it was very cheap and the feel of the place is really great. However, the cut was just "meh" as two stars describes. It wasn't styled or even shampooed which is kinda expected now-a-days in my opinion. So I'd rather go elsewhere, spend $10 extra dollars and get a better cut. I really wanted to like this place because it is very old school and charming. Got my every 8 weeks cut & color yesterday. Got a short sexy bob, with high-lights on crown, and as always Susan (Venus) did a fabulous job! I got lots of compliments last night. I love it Oh and I got to see the two sweet dogs (Jack & ?) that come by for cheese and doggy treats . Romeo takes care of theses Dogs - not just any cheese , good stuff. Oh yeah....this is one cool spot. The salon itself is way funky which makes the charm outstanding. Becky cut my hair. I have never had a dry cut before. She did a great job. She listened attentively to what I wanted--keep the length but I am kinda bored and I do not plan on spending a lot of time styling it in the morning before work. Really--who wants to commit to spending tons of time in front of the mirror trying to get things just right first thing in the morning? Not this gal. She framed my face and told me to keep the color I am using cause it looks good on me. Total bonus points. So many places would try to talk you into all sorts of things and not pay attention to you as a person much less what you want. She did. I will certainly be going back and recommending it to anyone looking for a salon. Since losing my hairdresser of nearly ten years, decided to try shops near where I live (Heights area). After a couple of duds, went to Becky at Venus and feel I've found my new place. Becky 'dry cut' my hair, which I've always though best method, especially for wavy hair, tweaked my cut to look just right when it dries. Becky actually listens and carries out your request, knows what she's doing. In my experience, that's not easy to find when you're picky about your haircut. I have long, layered hair with a lot of natural wave. The cut she gave me both corrected the last hack job I got and is also a cut I can easily style myself. Also love the funky decor and ambience of the shop. read more

He was trained in the UK and uses a technique that I have personally not seen before, but I LOVE. He's very nice and really fun to talk to. I would trust him with my hair forever. Just moved to the Heights, found this place on yelp. Paying it forward! I saw Neil and he was extremely thorough with me. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted, and he made me feel like I was in great hands. This guy is a color genius. He stayed almost 3 hours past closing time with me. He even called a week or two later to follow up and make sure I was happy with everything. The cut is super cute too. I will definitely be coming back here. Be prepared to pay though. This review is long overdue. I moved to Houston from San Marcos almost a year ago and I miss it terribly. When I come to Venus, I feel like I'm back at home. All of the ladies are just wonderful, friendly and warm. Venus's shop is decorated with a ton of personality and is a lot of fun! The first time I went to Venus, I just needed a trim but mentioned how I've always loved huge Texas hair. The next thing you know, Venus started to tease and curl my hair until I had hair bigger than Dolly Parton! It was a blast watching Venus do what she loves to do best---big hair! The second time I went I decided to chop off a ton of my hair. Becky was my stylist and she did EXACTLY what I wanted! All of the ladies who work there are kind, fun and make you feel like you've been a friend for years. All of the customers are just as nice and will often strike up a conversation with you. I love how it feels like a little community! Venus's place isn't fancy by any means. If you're looking for techno music blaring in the background and marble floors, don't come here. But if you're looking for a laugh and a great haircut for a decent price, this is the place for you! read more

Great small business that deserves your support. I have moved to North Texas where BIG HARRE is revered but which is ridiculed here (which it should be). They cut men's hair as well and as Paul Bosch used to say about I.W. Marks. " They can even make me look good." I've been going to Venus for over 5 years. I was traumatized by a bad color job at a high end salon, and was desperate to find a new hair dresser, when a co-worker recommended Venus Hair (Susan Venus). No regrets! First, I am super low-maintenance - I really don't like someone pressuring me to do something trendy or that will require a lot of styling and work. Venus is exactly that, she does what I request - a simple straight cut of my hair just below the shoulders. She does a dry cut - so shampoo and style is not included for $40. SOLD! Also I'm in and out in about 20 minutes, max. On a side note, They have an awesome art car out front, the shop is really fun - and you must see the bathroom. Enjoy!! read more

I'd been a Supercuts/TGF "client" for a while, traipsing in when I could no longer bear the curls growing over my ears and always feeling a bit guilty not knowing whether i needed "3" or "4" clippers around the back, or how to answer if i wanted it "rounded" or "square." Really a cool place, and likely my salon of choice now. Conveniently located to me, and completely unpretentious. If you're interested in "state of the art" or marble counters or Bumble & Bumble products, move on. If you're interested in your hair looking amazing at a reasonable price, set up an appointment. The only slight irritation was that my stylist was late , which wasn't a big deal since I had the day off, but could be in the future! Otherwise, the experience was excellent. I went back to Venus and I regret it. I will admit it's partly my fault but only because I stuck around even though she was behind in appointments. When I sat down to say what I wanted she walked away from me three times, clearly not listening. I even tried showing her pictures of the hair she gave me last time, but she didn't take the time to look. What happened next was a rushed job and the worst haircut. She doesn't know me and was more worried about the customer after me waiting. I appreciate a long time client being important, but I was a potential long time client. This is my favorite place to get my hair done. It is a community type of hair salon, as everybody is super friendly and just stops on by to say hello. I also enjoy all of the busy decor inside. My stylist is Jill, and she always does an amazing job with my hair. I just go in and tell her I want some bright red streaks and whatever else she feels like doing. I've been here twice. My hair is simple I get it trimmed every 3-4 months. The first time I went my dry cut cost $45. The second time I went I had a male hair stylist and he whispered to me that he normally charges $50 for his cuts. It's felt a little shady. There's no bells and whistles to this cut. It literally takes 15 mins tops for a cut (cut off 3 inches). I have him a $60 and he walked me out without giving me any change. For a $60 hair cut you'd think you'd getting a little better service and some more one on one time. Maybe even a wash!! read more

It was so damaged from years of swimming and she's been able to keep me styled up throughout the changes my hair has gone through while getting healthy again.
