I like to stop by this shop when I can on the weekends to grab a petit pain. I love their petit pains! I've had the pugliese and the raisin walnut, which were both quite flavorful. I've also tried the ham and brie croissant which I really enjoyed! Buttery and savory goodness! This place is perfect to grab a little snack! Although it can get a bit pricey, I stick to the small stuff, which is fancy enough for me! Love love love...did I say LOVE? The best baguettes in the borough hands down! I really like that they have a basket of mini bits of their different breads by the register. It has allowed us to try several of their other items including Raisin Walnut - dense, chewy and not too sweet and the Campange - yummiest sourdough! Also, a bite of their Miche was like being back at Poilane Bakery in Paris. It's just sooo good. The croissant are consistently good as well. Other french bakeries have good days and bad days with their croissant, but Bien Cuits are always amazing. Adorable cozy seating area. Although you'd have to get there early to get one. The croissants and desserts are on point here, large space & ample seating. Every once in a while there is something new on the menu. Speaking of which try their new eggplant sandwich! It gets packed on the weekends but the staff does a great job keeping the line moving. Best croissant I've ever had, even in Paris. Bien Cuit is aggressively marketing itself as a destination bakery - and has even put out out a cookbook - so my hopes might have been too high. We tried two eclairs today - one was sickeningly sweet and the other was great in concept (pistachio), but the filling was runny and it had refrigerator flavor! That's certainly not as advertised. On both our weekend visits there wasn't a line but we still we couldn't get seats (and there seemed to be little chance of it), despite waiting for 15 minutes, because Bien Cuit is at heart a cafe where people camp for hours with their laptops. Which would be fine enough if we lived just a few blocks away and could pop in and out with our purchases. However, I won't be making Bien Cuit a pastry destination in the future on weekends unless I just happen to be passing through Boerum Hill on my way home. read more

I love Bien Cuit. Best coffee on Smith street and an excellent selection of savory bites that really balance flavors. I usually enjoy the vibe and find it chill and refined and appreciate their use of actual plates and cups. I was taken aback today when I came in and they were serving all drinks and food in disposable products. It took away from the experience and of course added to waste. It was SUPER busy so I understand how employees felt like they had to move fast and use disposable products. But it really took away from my experience. I like to sit and savor their delectables and today felt really off. Hopefully this doesn't happen too often. Maybe bring in another counter person during the busy weekend hours? read more

I was so psyched when this place opened. Finally, a great local bakery. But nowadays I curse myself for going there for anything other than a loaf of bread. The breads are consistently amazing, but only just about worth their price. The pastries, while often very good, are so overpriced it's insane and they are inconsistent in quality (e.g., today my almond croissants was quite burnt). And the coffee is just not worth it - nor the erstwhile spritzers (which were simply fruit juice mixed with soda water). Still, the breads bring me back. And then I end up buying something on top, and.... dammit! read more

The chai latte I ordered was a bit slow in coming and not at hot as I'd normally like my morning beverage to be on a chilly day. I bought a few demi-baguette at the grand central location and as I walked towards my track I noticed something. They were hard as rocks - like so hard I couldn't squeeze them. I barely broke an end off. If you saw someone hitting a demi-baguette against a marble column, that was me. Like primitive man, I was using the tools around me to tenderize my food. I needed to make sandwiches and this bread would have broken my wife's teeth. Figuring it was a mistake, I brought the rolls back and recreated my parlor trick on the counter. The bread was intact but the counter might have cracked. The sales associate wasn't amused. I don't blame her. I was a dick but she was totally professional and informed me that that was the way the bread is supposed to be and offered me ciabatta instead. 5 stars for the sales associate and 1 for this particular bread! I have purchased other items here but I do not recommend demi-baguette unless you're dipping it into soup. read more

I ventured in here the other day after the gym. As I walked in, the heavenly smell of sugar enveloped me. Yum! This is a cute little place with a few tables in the front by the window and more along the counter. You can see treats and sweets coming out of the oven and into the display. Not feeling the savory items that were there, I ordered a cappuccino and an almond/chocolate croissant. (Kind of a pan au chocolat meets almond croissant!), it was good, although one corner was ever so slightly burnt. After a few minutes I realized that they had forgotten my cappuccino and had to ask for it again. It was quickly delivered but definitely was a let down, as the espresso didn't shine through as I wanted it to... The reason it gets a 3 and not a 4 is that they forgot my drink and the woman who took my order made me feel like I was somehow imposing on her by ordering and it seems just a smidge pricier than other bakeries who have similar offerings. (Maybe that's not true?) In any case, I think I'll come back because they do have some lovely pastries and breads available. read more

This place has the best pastries in the USA, which are as close as I have found to what I love in France. Plus, the staff are always so kind and happy (must be because they are walking on delectable clouds of croissant dough :-) Added bonus, the coffee is strong and there are some nice seats if you want to read or people watch or just enjoy your pastry. I really love/ loved the miche but the last 2 loaves we bought were really disappointing. The usually great crust is not crusty anymore, the flour doesn't seem to be the same and the loaf is smaller. I have been eating the Miche for many years, sometimes 2 per weekend, so I can recognize if there is a change. We really hope it is a temporary problem because there is/ was no equivalent in NYC. read more

The best pastries in Brooklyn, and I'll arm-wrestle you over that. I occasionally buy a massive loaf of bread, thinking I live in Paris, and let it sit for the week on my cutting board, building a hard crust. The staff are very cool, friendly and super mellow. Hours can pass in Bien Cuit, and I often find myself lost in conversations with friends before we see the broom. Unfortunately, I really don't like the coffee and have given up. It's too bitter and not in the French or Italian tradition. I don't get it. read more

The croissants are burnt, and no this isn't how they are supposed to be!! My husband and I are French and most of what is behind the counter looks and tastes like a big mistake! Their flavor combinations are severely questionable in the danishes and more elaborate pastries. In addition, everything looks like it's been shot with a shrink gun and miniaturized. Whereas the price has been grossly inflated. $4 for a tiny odd tasting pastry, please! And $4 for a "Demi-baguette". It's actually the size of a quarter or eighth of a baguette! Lastly, the service is cold and creepy definitely not friendly. I just bought half a loaf of multi-grain. It's 9am and the half-loaf is not fresh. It was baked yesterday. How can I arrange to buy bread that was baked the same day? Addendum: the owner states it's baked the same day. They should pack them in bags to retain freshness and humidity; nothing tastes fresh in this bakery, including the croissants. Second addendum: I kept the Bien Cuit loaf in its brown bag, bagged in another plastic bag, bagged inside an airtight bag. It has kept its freshness for 6 days now and the taste is very authentic. It actually becomes more authentically rustic with time! So they are doing something very right. So this review went from one star to 3 and now to 5. read more
