Now that the downtown Portland store is gone, I have to drive to the suburbs to shop at REI. The Clackamas location is stocked with all the usual suspects - bikes, camping, fishing, hiking, kayaking gear. But the swimming sectin is always lacking. Since I swim daily, I'm always seeking replacement goggles or fins - and typically find better options on Amazon, which was the case this day. The layout of this store was a maze with no clear departments or signage. Awesome finds, awesome prices Dropped by here for the first time today! I was told their stock today was pretty full, so I got lucky. Lots of cycling, climbing shoes, winter clothing, and shoes. Their kids/baby section is very small (baby section was nonexistent, but only found one bunting bag for a good price when the item was brand new). I found a new/lightly used kids base layer for $8! My big find today was a pair of Vasque hiking boots, which were originally for $220, but I paid $36! MIND BLOWN. It's brand new and discontinued. They have excellent vibram traction, medium to high ankle support, comfortable and light, and a non-mesh exterior. I could not pass up this opportunity. I also saw many winter coats and parkas on sale for a good price. This is the time to buy your winter items. Also spotted a foldable lightweight kayak, Yeti coolers, pet clothing/accessories, and tons of backpacks displayed and ready for spring/summer trips. The cashier person told me that the backpacking packs will be gone by end of summer. So stop by from time to time to see what's in stock. Quality items at excellent prices. read more

Good if you can go early after they open if you want to try on shoes. Recently on a Sunday afternoon they didn't have enough staff assigned to that area. It seemed like maybe only one person was assigned and they were swamped. Then they brought over a few more people. At least one was not happy about it maybe they were missing their break. read more

REI seems to do one thing exceedingly well, and that's to make for a HORRIBLE customer experience. I ordered on-line, and opted to pick up in-store. In the store, there is no signage directing customers where to do this. There is also no signage visible from the entrance that there is a queue to to the checkstands, and it also didn't help that it was empty when I arrived. On my arrival, I stood in line behind the one customer ahead of me at one checkstand, as the only other's employee was on the phone. There appeared to be a trainer and and a trainee waiting working the checkstand I was waiting in. Neither acknowledged me for many minutes, and the trainer eventually asked me, "Are you in line?" What kind of weird question is that? I responded that I was picking up an internet order, and she directed me to the end of the (now two) customers who were behind the other employee, still on the phone. By the time the existing customers were tended to, the same employee called me back over to her line, asking "What have you got for me?". Again, weird. She fetched my order after she scanned the barcode on my phone, and wished me a nice day. To me, this seemed like her abusing what little power she had by providing terrible service, which is pretty sad. You can bet I'll never return to this location, and am extremely frustrated that I bought the $30, nonrefundable lifetime REI membership, as this experience was enough to make me never want to purchase from them again. read more

I talked to the ski shop workers about installing new binding on a pair of skis , the young man told me he could do that but that I should wait since I'm getting new ski boots just to make sure. I sent my wife down there as I'm out town for work . They sent her away said they couldn't do it !! I was upset. I called and left a message few minutes later there manger called me back twice. He came with a solution made point of offering to do them right now !! I got say I usually get the run around or something. I have always had a good experience with Rei so kinda surprised ,,,,,,, but then with them calling me back ask me have her come back down there . I think the manager the team whoever is running the show down there definitely deserves some recognition !!! I felt pretty damn excited that my ski trip is gonna happen on my new skis !! Yes maybe it's little things but it sure made my day !! I wanted to make a point of giving praise to my hometown Rei for going above beyond ten stars excellent thank your Rei staff !!! To be clear up front, this review is for the REI Re / Supply outlet at Clackamas Town Center, which is a separate physical store than the main building further east in the same mall. Re/Supply is where REI sells used outdoor gear, both their own as well as other brands. They take trade-ins of used gear as well (though they are kinda picky about what they take). In any case, I had awesome service from the team in every regard; I've traded apparel to them (you get a gift card for the value to spend in the store), I've shopped there and I've purchased gear there as well, and everyone from the front desk to the trade in guy, to the online customer service folks were absolutely outstanding. The store space is fairly big in a Nordstrom Rack kind of way, but the labeling of departments can be hit or miss, so take heart. They sell everything from skis to hiking boots to tents, sleeping bags, camping gear and men's and women's jackets so be sure to poke around -- you never know what you'll find. The selection is hugely varied and a bit scattershot, which I guess is to be expected, and prices are higher than you'd think you should pay for stuff that can sometimes be pretty trashed. Then again, I found an almost new pair of Oboz hiking shoes for only $50 --- but that was probably dumb luck, and your results may vary. Some good deals to be had if you are really committed, but no guarantees. If nothing else, an interesting spot to kill a few hours. read more

Until today I loved REI, I took the jacket I bought there over a year ago (the maximum amount of time they will take any responsibility for their products); with a no longer functioning zipper. I was wearing a Patagonia Dow sweater at least 5 years old that the Patagonia store has fixed 3 time so far. REI said they wouldn't do anything so I left the jacket there and no more jackets will come from REI. read more

This is the worse REI I ever been too. Don't bring your service dogs here. The store manager came up to me and told me no pets allowed and then walked away....Why make that comment if you're not going to even ask if my dog is a service animal? His name is Alex guessing the store manager, beware... no customer service at all... we drove pretty far and were just stopping in to get some supplies, and it was the worse experience ever. Had good experience in shoes, gentleman very helpful. Then went to ladies clothes where female employee and I discussed the fit (length) of pants as I am tall. REI only carried medium length pants and I wear "long". She suggested I try downtown store and advised me she would call the downtown store to assure long pants were available there. I waited for her to return with this information. She returned alright but was chatting it up with another employee and completely forgot me. Few minutes later I tried on a pair of pants and she assisted but it was as if she had never seen me before. Mind you, our conversation was extensive prior to this. I'm a long standing fan of REI, however up until a few days ago I wasn't a member. I joined and made my first official purchase: a Yakima roof box. The process was simple and the pickup was even easier. They initially asked if I wanted it unboxed or left on its own. I appreciated the packaging removal as that would be one less thing for me to do when I got home! The kindest person brought it out and offered to help install, which I was very appreciative of. This was absolute horrible service. I came in wanting to buy stuff so we could do a big hike in Moab I hoped to be fitted for a backpack. Tent sleeping bag/ everything I asked a man to help me told him what I needed. He said, iwhat backpack do you like? I said I don't know I need help not sure how it should fit nothing put it on put on, so I grabbed one and put it on and I told him I don't like how the frame is the back of my head he said sorry I have to go to lunch now This guy will help you, but I looked at me and walked away. So I walked around for about 10 more minutes no help in site so I left. on my drive here to Moab. I stopped at another REI and got all my stuff with a great help there as it should be and $3000 later. read more

I always make a point to look for an REI store wherever I go. This REI has one of the most helpful staff! It sits in a very busy mall. When we walked in there were tons of items on sale still. This was past the black Friday madness sale. I wanted something in an XS size and it wasn't on the rack. This one guy staff made a huge effort in going thru hell almost to find my size. I wish I got his name. Mea culpa! :( I already love REI but staff like this guy and their awesome return policy keeps me coming back for more! read more

I've had my eyes on a pair of Bluntstone boots forever and I grew up with my parents taken us to REI!. It REALLY disappointed me to find out the newer management has changed from a Co-op of members who enjoy the outdoors and want to have access to high quality climbing gear and outdoor apparel at a reasonable price!. At least that's what it is SUPPOSED to be about. Unfortunately now it had turned into the typically overpriced, very UN-co-op like retail space. That being said, the woman who works upstairs in shoes is WONDERFUL!!!!!. I should have written this review a while back when I bought my boots but better late than never!. I came here to return a couple items. Parked right away, walked in and was taken care of right away. The return policy here is still just amazing. I bought a pair of gloves from Colombia a few weeks ago and they fell apart after one week. The response when I tried to return them and didn't have my receipt? Basically, tough. This place? They keep track of your info and have all that at the ready. I gave my info to Colombia, but they apparently can't pull that up. Dumb. All because of a $20 pair of gloves? Best sport store ever! There was a lot of options to buy and whole employees were so great and friendly!

The great outdoors beckon! REI is the go to place for all of your outdoor recreational needs. I have visited this store several times and love browsing the aisles. Located on the side of the Clackamas Town Center Mall next to Macy's and Claim Jumper. There is plenty of parking and the sign on the storefront is really big and inviting you cannot miss it. There is ample parking nearby to be had. The interior of the store is well lite and very well designed. The store is broken up by sections/ activities. For example, there are sections for Biking, Hiking & Camping etcetera. I really like how the store is laid out. You can easily find hiking/ camping equipment in one centralized location and the employees in each department are very knowledgeable about equipment. I recently purchased a Camelbak hydration pack from them after stopping by to look at and try on some of the packs they had in store. The worker who helped me was very friendly and had a lot of knowledge to share about the pack that I was looking at. He did not pressure me to buy anything and offered to let me try on the many packs that they had in stock. I found the store to always be very clean and there are always plenty of sales people ready to help me when I need it. The customer service here is spectacular; they give you up to a year (I have also heard longer) to return/ exchange anything that you are not happy with. With their rewards program they can also look up your prior purchases for you. I love that they have hiking/ camping group classes that you can do for free or with very little costs associated with it. I highly recommend this store for anybody that loves the great outdoors or if you want to just browse and look at all the new gear for your outdoor sport. Cotton is death. So say the folks at REI where I recently attended a free walking clinic [1] and seminar on dressing for cold weather. And basically I was the poster child for what not to wear. I'm a total disaster. This also explains why most of the races I've done don't end particularly well. For someone who is a planner by nature, my athletic competitions are shockingly spontaneous. Why not do a marathon with zero training? Run a 1/2 marathon or bike the Bridge Pedal even though I haven't been on a bike in a year? I think I need some sort of sports intervention. One of the REI employees, Rusty, led the seminar and gave a great overview of what to wear and why without a big sales pitch. He was also funny as hell. I've been going to REI forever (it is worshipped like a church by some of my relatives) and am always impressed by the sales staff. It is also cool that your $20 lifetime membership is donated to local charities selected by the staff. You know you don't belong in REI when you climb the stairs to the top floor and your partner says, "Hey, are you winded? I am!" We went seeking shoes and I was a little disappointed in the selection. It's pretty minimal. The saleslady was helpful and nice, and it is a pleasant shopping experience. Still, if you are looking for shoes, you may be disappointed coming here. You may want to call first and see if they have what you are looking for. The store is open and airy, and seems to have lots of good stuff for people who get outside frequently. I don't, so to me it all appeared to be brightly colored instruments of torture. Easy parking if you go to the lot behind it and take the escalator down, rather than try to park in front by the Macaroni Grill. read more

I went in today looking for a backpack and found one half off as part of the "garage sale." The staff was very friendly and directed me where to look and how to follow the social distancing arrows. They were even able to do a no-contact backpack fitting! All my questions were answered. I love how REI is putting out garage sale items on a continuous basis now, because they are not legally allowed to hold a garage sale event. It's nice to always be able to find good deals instead of waiting for the quarterly event. I certainly did not expect to find a $300 backpack in my exact size for half price when I went in today! I'm used to the HUGE Seattle flagship REI so selection-wise, this location is much more limited. But my experience is just as pleasant here as it is up north. I've found some great deals looking through the sales racks and also purchased tax-free outdoor gear for the wonderful PNW rain! Sales associates are great and very helpful! **LENGTHY REI GARAGE SALE REVIEW BELOW** This was my first time going to the members-only REI Garage Sale and I wasn't sure what to expect so I did some research beforehand. It's an annual (sometimes bi-annual) sale where all returned merchandise, whether it's still brand new with tags or tattered and falling apart, is resold as "used" at a steep discounted price. I was in the market for a pack (for some backpacking in the 'Land Down Under') and was hoping to score a deal. Research showed me that you need to get there early to get the best deals. I got there 2 hours in advance and there were already about 30 people ahead of me. By the time the doors opened, there was a good 150+ in the line. So get there early! I've heard that at some locations, people will literally hitch tents and camp out the night before.... Packs are supposedly some of the most popular garage sale items, as well as sleeping bags, tents, car racks, and kayaks. I made a beeline for the 30 or so packs available, grabbed 3 packs that looked my size, and went into a corner to assess my picks. I look back and the racks are empty. Within seconds, there were people swarming me, watching me like a hawk to scoop up the ones didn't want. I had 5 people staring at me as I tried them on and trying to grab them if they strayed a little too far from between my legs. I couldn't figure out what the sizes of the packs were (FYI, there's a small label on the top outer part of the shoulder straps!) and was hoping someone could help me. One guy appeared to want to help, only to grab one of my packs, try it on himself, say "hey it fits me", and walk off with it...wtf?! At least I knew it wouldn't fit since he didn't look like a women's small. I got an Osprey pack, retail $209, for $99. It looked practically new without a single scratch or mark. I also got a pair of brand new Chaco sandals for $40...retail $105. The fact that these were in like-new condition made it worth it. But some other, more used items, seemed to be slightly expensive for it to be secondhand. Some other items I saw: Thule hardshell racks for $99 or less, canoe for $399, The Northface jackets were all at least 50% off (some new with tags!), Marmot sleeping bag for $50, and a mountain bike for $130. Be aware that all sales are final. Some products have defects but is reflected by a deeper discount. It felt a bit like Black Friday but waking up at 6am to get in line was well worth it! read more

Everyone knows REI, for the most part great selection and good gear. I wouldn't recommend any hiking shoes or boots with Vibram soles though. I have purchased 2 pairs of boots from REI and both pairs with Vibram soles have peeled off. Very frustrating when the shoe is in good condition. Not sure if anyone else has had this problem with those soles? The first pair was Merrill and the second was the REI branded and they wouldn't even give me credit or offer to cover the repairs. read more

Very pretty REI in Portland. Had to buy some sort of car top holder bc our car needed the extra storage space and we needed something that didn't require a roof rack. This REI is two floors tall and it's super nice (well like most REIs). Also Oregon no sale tax, so if you buy things here, it'll be the EXACT price of what you wanted!! I've been to this store (and other REIs) a bunch of times, and I've never really gotten a ton of help from the people that work there, but they have great stuff. I went to this location a couple of weeks ago and Ian helped me find the most magical boots I've ever worn (Kodiak brand, awesome shoes). Ian was by far the best and most attentive REI employee I've ever come across! He was soooo helpful and patient. I've even bought other shoes from this store before, but I'm so happy with my new boots that I needed to give them a shoutout for what a great job Ian did. Thanks so much!!! read more

People love to shit on REI. It's expensive. It's for yuppies. It's... blah blah. It's a company that stands behind its products. It's a company that was started in this region. It's still a co-op (and I'm a member since... a long ass time ago). It stocks great products, hires solid staff, and offers a ton of great community classes and education. It's where I go when I need equipment that won't quit. I've been a member of REI since the early 90's. From my backpacking, rock-climbing and backcountry skiing days I've been outfitting myself at REI (as well as via other local stores) with shoes, sleeping-bags, tents, long-range backpacks, river sandals, ropes, harnesses, topo-maps and various and sundry survival gear. I've paid a premium to purchase my gear at REI but here and there where it has failed, I've been able to bring it in and have them replace it or refund my money. No questions asked. This REI is fairly suburban but stocks the usual quality equipment. I've walked away from this location with plenty of gear including jackets, clothing, bags and the like. Every time I've had staff assist me they've been knowledgable and friendly. I outfitted myself for camping, a trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos, biking, hiking and most recently, business travel from this particular location. Unless things change I'll probably continue to visit REI for my outdoor and travel needs secure in the knowledge that if I have any problem with the products I buy, I'll be able to have them make it right for me without much in the way of fuss. That's worth the premium I pay to shop here. Plus I get a dividend (which I used today to cut down the price of a bag I purchased. I can't say that about most of the other places I shop. read more
