This store has been in SJ for as long as I can remember and I've never reviewed this place. I've just taken it for granted to be completely honest. But this weekend when all we needed was a kite, Big 5 was the *only* place that had a small selection of them after we tried finding them at both Target and Walmart. I called into the store first and was greeted by a friendly sales associate who said they definitely had kites. When we walked in and asked where the kites were, one of the sales associates happily walked us over to where they are. She even recommended the one that she had purchased for herself. For $10 and some change, this kite was a surprise hit at the beach this past Sunday. It was super easy to put together for someone like me who is completely clueless when it comes to putting things together. We had no issues with getting it up into the air and flying our Ladybug kite. Who knew that this kite could keep both the kids and adults entertained for hours? Between this kite and the shovels in the sand, it was a perfect day. Please come into this store and give them your business. With the onset of online shopping, it's so nice to walk into a store and be able to purchase in person. read more

Came here to say in dire need of A toddler's sized baseball tee. This particular location was the closest to me and because I've had pretty good visits in the past, coming here was a must. Big 5 Sporting Goods used to be my go-to whenever was in need of baseball tees. The assorted colors are plentiful and I typically don't have any issues in finding the sizes I needed. This visit was unfortunately a let down. Not only were the color options scarce but the sizes in stock were just as terrible. I literally walked around the whole store twice, thinking I missed the baseball tee rack. Products are typically reasonably priced and employees are willing to help if you ask. Parking behind the store is plentiful but there is always street parking in front of the store if available. So why the 4 stars?? Thank you to the staff for being kind enough to do a search and helped me located my backup item I needed. It would have been great to find exactly what I wanted but it is very obvious that Big 5 has downsized in its items they offer/carry. read more

The lady Terri at the cash register was extremely rude. I asked her for my sons gloves we were going to purchase at the counter and she had a rude response. I've worked in customer service for many years and for a response like the one she provided was not okay. Instead of the response she provided she could have said, "I'll be right with you". The man who was on the floor was very attentive and his customer service skills were great. She needs to take notes from him. However they just lost a customer better yet many customers because I will tell all of my friends which is many not to come to Big 5 due to Teri's rudeness. read more

I've frequented many sporting good stores, many of them Big 5 stores, but this was the first time I ever came to this particular store. I arrived around 11a on a Saturday and was in need of ammunition, as I was headed to Metcalf to do some shooting. As I stood next to the firearms area, a sales associate eyeballed me from afar. He finally came over reluctantly, after I signaled him over. He asked if I needed to buy some ammunition and I told him yes. Then he told me that the "ammunition guy" wouldn't be coming in until 1:00p. What the heck?? A Big 5 that can't sell ammunition because they don't have a scheduled person to administer it? He told me that another nearby store might be able to help me out. I asked him if he could call and find out, so I wouldn't have to waste gas, just to find out that I couldn't get ammo from that store either. He wandered off to make the call. Almost 10 minutes later, he still hadn't come back, so I decided not to wait any longer.... then he appears! At that point, I just told him that I was headed to Bass Pro Shop instead, because I KNEW they wouldn't have a problem. I have no idea how this store can stay open if they're going to flush sales down the toilet. Never again will I step foot in that store. read more

I am being generous giving this 2 stars - maybe come here for emergencies (although we have done this our past 2 times with no success). This location is depressing. Merchandise selection and quality is not good. Staff aren't familiar with what they have in inventory and offer minimal if any help. Every time I have been in here it is messy and just feels unkempt. After this recent visit we walked out and said "never again"... and my daughter said "didn't we say that last time?" Fast forward - went to Dicks today - bright store, diverse merchandise at different quality and price points, engaged and happy staff. Difference was mind blowing. Will not return here (except to return the shoes we bought out of desperation and can now return). read more

Big 5 is awesome! This location has parking in the back and in order to reach it, you'll have to drive along a narrow driveway that could barely squeeze two cars with those metal poles in the way on the side. There were only 2 of those poles so it wasn't bad when you past that part. A lot of parking in the back. Big 5 Sporting Goods had a large selection from guns, hockey, baseball, basketball, athletic gear, shoes, fishing stuff, and weights. I'm sure I left something out but that shows they carry a large selection of things. The staff were nice and helpful. I don't think any of them expressed any attitude of "I don't want to be here right now" and if some were, then I couldn't tell. Awesome place to fulfill your sporting good needs! read more

Deals on deals on deals on deals! I came here recently for new hiking boots. You will find that the items here are cheaper than most sporting goods stores. They also offer sales and coupons by joining their membership. Want to slap on another % on that deal? Find a store coupon online or through membership, and slap a manufacturer coupon on top of that ish. This location is larger than most Big 5 Sporting Goods stores. More goods equals a lot more employees walking around. I had awkward interaction after awkward interaction with every employee there. Not rude, just awkward. read more

I was in the market for some new sneaks. This store is not too far away and they usually have good prices, so I stopped in to take a look. The store wasn't busy, but the aisles were cluttered with merchandise and help was no where to be found. I waited in the shoe department for over 10 minutes for someone to come help before finally leaving. Maybe they were having a bad day. read more

The quality of service at this store has gone down over the years. Today, staff was annoyed that I asked her for assistance to find advertised discount items that were listed in electronic coupons. She proceeded to point in the general direction of where the items could be found then ignored me. The staff appeared to not be knowledgeable of sports equipments. Prices here are generally not cheaper than other sporting good stores in the area, unless there are discount items and staff over the years tend to not have experience or knowledge of the equipment. Next time, I'll order items from online businesses. It may take longer, but at least I don't have to navigate rude and inexperienced staff. read more

Convenient, because it's right across from the Eastridge, Mall, where people can do some hardcore shopping. It is a lower-end mall though, in terms of affordability Nonetheless, my experience at this Big 5 was great. We, my dad and I, were able to pick out our tennis shoes, after being in the store for only 10 minutes. There was no customer service, but that was fine. They have sections for both women and men in the sales section at the back of the store. In only 10 minutes, we were able to find shoes that we both liked. Just FYI - I had to pick between two pairs of shoes that I liked. What won we over, however, was the colors (purple and blue). It was also a good buy, because it's name brand, Oasics. Got this brand, because I used to get Oasics track spikes. Love this place for its affordability and quality. read more

Great customer service, I was asked several times if I needed help and in a helpful courteous way. All the employees we attentive to everyone in the store. Great service A well balanced selection of goods. They didn't have all I wanted but most of what I wanted and or something like it that I could alternatively use. Went shopping for some sporting gear and found a lot of what I wanted. I have been to a lot of places that really don't have anything to what I'm looking for and if they do their prices are sky high. Big 5 always has something and they do a solid job pricing themselves competitively. I try to always support a store over the Internet. I come into this big 5 location pretty frequently to buy my ammo and I've never had such a crappy experience like this before! The manager of the location (Fernando maybe) that me and my husband usually deal with is super helpful. However, today the employee named Jonathan was not helpful in the slightest and accused me of buying the ammo for my husband instead of myself. He told my husband we needed to walk away whenever he turned the camera on and we started the purchase. We have never experienced this type of treatment in this location before. My husband and I always come and buy ammo together but we don't have the same type of firearm so why would I be purchasing 9mm hallow tips for my husband who has a .22 caliber pistol. Needless to say I didn't buy anything from this location and will not whenever I see him working. read more

I hope the current manager see's this, because I decided to take a very late visit one night to buy some gloves for the gym, and as one of the last few customers in the store, I tried to make it quick. But that wasn't the issue. Im only writing this review because I while I was standing in line paying for my items, I couldn't help but notice at how the manager was treating a customer that needed help. She came to the registrar and asked if he had a certain size available, and without any recognition, he just snapped and said " NO ITS ONLY ONLINE." As I could already tell, this lady wasn't very diligent in english, but she understood and asked where she can find one.. and again he snapped and said " I SAID WE DONT HAVE IT. AND THERE ARE NO HALF SIZES SO DONT ASK FOR IT." She turned to her husband and told him that they didn't have it and she asked if they had the mate to the current shoe she was holding and if he could check the back, and without EVEN CHECKING, he SNAPPED AGAIN and said, " I DONT HAVE IT, IF YOU WANT IT, THERE'S ON IN MOUNTAIN VIEW." SERIOULSY?! I know for a damn fact there are so many more locations of Big 5 Sporting Goods, and with your ignorant self, you want to send them to Mountain View? This seemed more of a racist and prejudice gesture because the manager was white and the customers were vietnamese. The workers ere are very helpful. I came here to get a Abu Garcia fishing pole for my gf. I asked the worker if he could help me find one. We looked on the shelves where they had the poles and could not find the one that I wanted. So he checked on the computer if they had any in stock. It said that they had one so he checked the back to see if it was there. He couldn't find it so he checked a nearby store to see if they had it and would place it on hold for us. Luckily the Stevens creek location had 2 in stock. They put one on hold for us. Great customer service here. They will do their very best to help you find exactly what you're looking for. Despite what the negative reviews says here, I actually find harmony within the chaos. I really like this store because of that fact. It's messy, it's poorly coordinated, it looks as if a tornado hit it twice in a day, and it's just plain meh. But seriously, that's what makes this place works. It's a sports store, it's not meant to win any awards in the looks department, it's meant to get you in and out with your item in your hand. I find that this place does that well. It usually has the things you're looking for, and a staff that probably ignores you at all times. But come here knowing what you want will mean cheap prices. My wife asked me to return snow gear due to the storm in Lake Tahoe. I went return the items and didn't have my wife's credit card which is understandable. I came back a week later with my wife's credit card and now they are telling me that my wife has to be here. I've been to many stores and never have trouble returning something with someone else credit card. The manager here says it's the same thing as buying with someone's credit card which is not true. I'll just do my shopping in the future at Dick's sporting good or Amazon. These places don't give people a hard time returning. read more

Yesterday, 8/22, I went to Dick's Sporting Goods trying to find a sauna suit. Bigger store means bigger selection, right? Wrong!! No sauna suits in sight. Plus the staff ignored me so I don't know if they truly did have them or not (just kept in an area I wasn't aware of). So I made my way here(Big 5) and found the sauna suits right away (of course it helped that I bought them here before). Even if I didn't know where they were, Angela(I believe that was her name) was willing to help me the second I walked in. I actually felt I was treated the way a customer should be treated. Here we go again with big 5.. major fail. They had a one day sale so I called in to put some sleeping bags on hold. I went to ask an associate if he can grab them for me. He couldn't find it. It took him 15 minutes just looking around. I suggested for him to go in the front and look, or as a co worker. He was like "wow. that's a good idea, hang on." Sure enough, the other workers knew where my sleeping bags were. I was not, however, impressed that they had left my sleeping bags on the gun counter. Someone could of just grabbed them and purchased them while I was on my way to the store!!!!!!!! That's so irritating, knowing it was the last two at the store. I then went to make my purchase. I asked the girl in the front is they had any more easy ups. I told her the model with the sku number. A guy goes to look for it and tells me I didn't give him the right model number .... I ended up finding the easy up myself. When I tried buying it, the girl kept insisting it was the wrong one and that it wasn't on sale.... it was ringing up as $50.... the sale price for the one day sale was $45.. I showed her the sku. She kept saying it's the wrong one... After so much back n forth, she finally took my payment. I then told her i'd leave it in the store until I pull up my car because I couldn't carry everything... I have been coming to this Big 5 since I was a kid. I love their low prices for outdoor equipment. There is a Sports Chalet in Eastridge mall across the street but this place beat their prices hands down all the time. They are always busy so if you need help you may have to wait a bit. When the help does come they are actually helpful, they know what they do have and do not have and where to get it if it is not there. This is always my first stop when I need something for outdoorsy stuff. All in all I recommend this place for anyone looking to do anything outside. read more

Worst big 5 I've ever been too. As soon as you walk in there's a nasty shit smell in the front entrance. They don't focus or greet their customers. We waited 5 minutes and finally just went and asked someone to help us. The girl named Sabrina was rude and didn't have any knowledge on the products being sold at the store SHE WORKS AT and to top it off she just started handing out all the firearms to the customers like if they were just toys on a shelf. They lack professionalism and the manager seems not to be knowledgeable at all on firearms and was being quite rude while answering our questions. I hope you can turn this shithole around. read more

Good selections of working shoes, some good price on baseball gears. Pretty much has the basic needs for camping. Affordable Jansport brand backpacks but not for me. Not much selections of rugged watches. They have good selections of affordable BB and Shotgun Rifles. A-OK on the windbreaker pants. Better yet grab one of the adds when you get out from here. She is really rude, has no clue how to help customers and treats them as if she's making them a favor. The managers are pretty polite, but they hey need to make sure they train their employees right. This a terrible location. I first went to the Big 5 on Blossom Hill that was a wonderful experience even though they did not have the size I needed. The clerk was kind enough to check other locations that had what I needed in stock. She found 6 in stock on Tully Road, so I jumped in my car and drove 25 mins in traffic to get there. When I got there, there were boxes all over the aisles so I hopped skipped and jumped to the area. I looked twice in the rack to make sure I didn't miss it. I then went to find a clerk to help me find the item. I walked up on 4 male clerks standing there talking to each other. The only other clerk I saw at that time was a young female clerk sorting through a box to put them away, so I didn't want to bother her. I asked, then 2 of the clerks got up and looked for me. Spent a few minutes looking for me and told me I would have to come back because it was too difficult for them to look because there were that many boxes laying around. Maybe if they weren't standing there talking, they would of been able to stock the shelves and get rid of the boxes laying all over the place, making it dangerous to walk the aisles! Upset, yes! I needed it for the next day so ended up purchasing another that was twice the price I couldn't really afford! read more

We always come to Big 5 for our sporting good needs but I guess this will be the last time we will ever patronize this store at this location on Tully Rd! The manager will not honor a sale price for a product that I have been waiting for to come on sale, and it happens that I just missed the sale by an hour! It is totally ridiculous and he will not even make a one time exception! We are really disappointed and advise loyal customers to be wary and think twice about coming to this store! I came here a few weeks ago with my cousin in search of a sleeping bag for our camping trip. We grabbed the last one for 13 bucks! I know sometimes you can't really trust the "original price", but wow if it really was 50, I'm sold! Suprisingly, we also stumbled upon some pretty fly gear while we were here. My cousin was lucky enough to find in her size a gorgeous Adidas track suit for 30% off. It was real nice, like she could be a breakdancer in a Missy Elliot video or something. We went to go buy a rifle at big 5 and it seemed like the managers first time selling a gun. It should only take like 20 minutes to buy a gun and he took like 2 hours. Had no idea what he was doing. When we went to go pick up the gun after the 10 day wait it took like another 2 hours just to pick it up because the manager is a big uneducated dummy.
