Big Rip Sporting Goods ... I mean Big 5. I wonder how Big 5 can stay in business with internet pricing being so much lower. But yet I find myself here a couple times a year needing to satisfy requirements in a hurry. Whats good about Big 5 is the fairly comprehensive selection of stuff. I would say compared to Sports Authority and Dicks, its not much below their variety. So back to Big 5. Fair selection of the essential team sports supplies. Hunting & fishing basics are there. Generally whats for sale is towards the bottom end of the quality scale. But who needs high quality salmon eggs? Guns and Ammo are a more expensive than the big discount sellers, but not horribly off. Although I do not shop at Walmart, Walmart's ammo pricing is much better. I'm not a shoe whore like some, but my impression is that while their shoe selection is huge, its mostly made up of bottom wrung models. Another plus about Big 5 is that they sell fishing & hunting licenses. The staff at this White Center location is always especially nice and helpful. There is nothing big about this Big 5. I've made a number of trips here, whether it be for camping or sports gear, and the selection is pretty sad. It should be called Small 5. If I am to judge job satisfaction on the level of customer service and employee friendliness/availability, I'd have to say a job at this Big 5 must suck pretty bad. It's okay if you need something last minute (and they actually have it), but otherwise I would suggest you try to find another sporting goods store. P.S. Poor selection and poor service= this location in my experience. Each time I have been here has been a disappointment, and I only go because I am hoping they might have what I need so I don't have to drive elsewhere. Service- I have never once been greeted or even had eye contact made with me by an employee each time I have come here. A simple, "Hey" when I walk in would be nice. When I actually have to search for an employee, I get the vibe that my question is an inconvenience even though this place is never busy. I have also had the experience that when I ask about an item, I'll get an "I don't know" without an offer to even go check or ask another employee. Selection- I am always surprised with what they don't have for a sporting goods store. They have very generic items, but if you want something specific or a specific brand,- skip this place because they probably don't have it. If you want a Seahawks shirt, you will find one. However, if you want #25 Sherman jersey, they won't have it. If you want an air mattress for camping, they have those. However, if you want a self-inflating camping mat, you won't find that. Again- general items are here, but they are more shallow in their selection like a restaurant that tries to do Asian, Italian, and Mexican food all in the same place. read more

Okay, so maybe its rare you actually get help at this Big 5 but I can't complain because every time I go in there (every couple of months) I know what running shoe I'm looking for. I'm in and I'm out. No help needed thank you very much. Why shop at Big 5 for running shoes? Because they are cheap, son! AND they always carry my shoe brand of choice Asics. I don't think I've ever paid more than $60 for a pair of running shoes there. I'm cheap, yes, but I will fork over some dough for a good pair of kicks. I do feel like all the other products are expensive but then again this is coming from someone who has a heart attack if she has to spend more than $10 on a pair of pants. This is a small sporting goods store but they have all kinds of goods for your sporting needs. I have ventured in there for boxing wraps and a bike lock which they had at reasonable prices. They do have a good selection of weights and boxing gear. Whenever I decide to invest in boxing gloves Big 5 will be the place I'll go to. Bottom line: only go into Big 5 if you know EXACTLY what you want. Service here is hit or miss (I actually was approached today!) so the little amount of help you need the better. read more

I called to see if these guys had Power Bar Gel in chocolate flavor. They said "yes we do" so I drove down. Not only did they not carry it, they pointed to their bars and said "there you go". I'm also pretty sure that the girl that helped me was on some drugs. I'm not joking. I thought I could redeem my trip by picking up a water bottle while I was there. Going into Big 5 you hope to find what you need, it being the only other fitness and sports store around other than what target sells. There is usually a good amount of employees working but they seem to always be in weird spots, like if you're wanting to look at a gun they usually always have to call someone over to help. Getting help is also sometimes annoying because most of the employees just walk by you because what they were doing was more important than your possible money. One lady stopped because I made eye contact and she made sure what I wanted they had and she checked to see if there was any other styles to choose from for me I think her name was Valerie, she was my cashier as well and was very nice. Buying shoes you seem to not get any help, I noticed two guys that just stood there and didn't even come over to ask if I needed anything. Before leaving because I could not find anything, I checked out the deal section and I noticed a nice pair of shoes that were about 50% lower than the retail cost but the shoe box had no lid because it was ripped off. The employee that briefly answered my question almost made me decide to not take the offer but I did. It just seems that no one wanted to ask me for help and there was plenty of employees to help, what made me happy was the one lady that did help me and the deal I scored on the shoes. read more

Pathetic excuse for any kind of basic service, let alone non-existent customer service. Saturday night 7:30pm...they make an art of avoiding eye contact and not offering help. It's quite amusing. Instead getting annoyed and exasperated looking for any kind of help. I just observed, Mr. ima douchebag with the Castro crew cut look stand around doing nothing chatting, no way he could see me standing still and staring but I didn't ask for help - so he didn't offer. So I stared at him long enough it was a solid 5 minutes and my eyes were glazing over when I guess he finally felt uncomfortable, so he slowly wrapped up his pointless conversation. Walked out from behind his register and strolled over and asked if I needed help. I said no- put down the couple items I had and walked out. I've said never again before but it feels good to say it and mean it. NEVER AGAIN ! Standard. Basic. Bare essentials. I enjoy the convenience of getting in and out of this location. I'm normally the type that scans this store for discount golf and basketball gear, but once purchased some (rubber-spiked) golf shoes last summer. I've been to better locations - the selection isn't great. A BIG plus, however, is that W. Seattle is much more accessible on a weekday night than Southcenter, Westlake Center, or Northgate. read more

Store is extremely unorganized and structured in a nonsensical way. Workers and management have zero sense of time management and customer service. I walked in to a get a pair of football gloves. Asked an employee for assistance and he left for 15 minutes and other employees were unwillinf to help or assist. Dont waste your time or money here. read more

I was happy for the help in picking a camping grill!!! I forgot the ladies name who suggested it but it's awesome lightweight. The employees always ask if they can help you and don't act dumb if they aren't sure if they have it and just ignore you. They really go out of their way to find it take you to the product and ask if you need anything else. Please don't get mad because this is a smaller Big 5. The shopping mall their has always been tight for spacing. Be happy we have something close to West Seattle for sports items that doesn't rip you off Thanks again it made our camp trip fantastic! First time I got a Butane grill instead of propane and we were impressed it heated well and worked awesome! We also get KT Tape and other items here. If they don't have what you need they will check to see if another one of their locations have it just ask. read more

I used to work in retail so I'm pretty lenient when it comes to how people who work in a retail store act/behave - it's a hard job with very little thanks, but that does not excuse the level of ineptitude I experienced at the Westwood Village Big 5 last night. I needed some very basic soccer gear. New shorts, shoes, socks and shin guards. Pretty much the same things every soccer player needs. I figured I'd tackle the hardest first: the shoes. So I went back to the wall and easily find the mens shoes. I poke around there a bit until I see the women's shoes tucked away in a corner. Each shoe is held up on the wall by a little plastic holder that specifies what kind of activity the shoe is designed for. A good %40 of those holders were empty of purpose or didn't have a shoe displayed on them at all! So I find the mens soccer shoes, (all 4) and notice that there is nothing on the women's wall showing soccer. I ask the next coworker I see, a girl who was not in uniform but helping customers and restocking the shoes anyway... She shows me some more soccer stuff, I say thank you and walk away. As I'm browsing the rack of shoes that she has shown me I'm starting to notice a trend, they're all kids shoes. Weird... Oh well, the socks are here so I grab some of those and head off to ask another kid where womens soccer shoes are. He makes eye contact, and takes off in another direction as soon as possible. What the hell? Okay, found another one to help me, he has no idea where anything is at all, has to go ask one of the cashiers - cashier waves vaguely at the shoe wall and says "back there". Clueless turns to me and repeats this. I'm starting to get really frustrated at this point, this is a small store, how do you lose a whole section of shoes?!?! So I'm fed up, I've been at work all day and now I'm out shopping when I just want to go home, this was supposed to be a quick trip just to pop in and grab a few things - I know what I want, I just need help finding it. So I head back to the mens shoes and since they are the only ones I see marked "soccer" I start trying those on. (I have wide feet anyway, it works out okay) Clueless has so far been the most attentive person in the store and after a few minutes wanders over to remind me that these are mens shoes. "Well since we can't find women's I'm just going to get mens" He proceeds to pick up shoes off the mens wall and look inside for a womens designation. Thanks, y'know I thought of that myself. He then wanders away and I find a shoe that pretty much, kind-of, sort-of fits and have to track him down again and speak very slowly to say "Do you have any more of this? Exactly this. Same size. Everything." He's gone for 10 minutes but does manage to come back with the right shoes. Okay, two down. I have now been in this store for 45 minutes and have socks and shoes. Still need shin guards and shorts. As I'm walking around looking for shin guards I see a cheap pair of shorts and just grab them, I'm too irritated to actually SHOP right now. Of course, there are no fitting rooms so who knows if they'll actually fit, but at this point I don't care. So I finally find the rack of shin guards in this incredibly awkward corner where you can barely walk, none of them are priced and the stock levels are terrible. The really cute pink ones that I really want only have XXS and the cool chrome ones only have XL. Most are not priced at all but I finally find a pair of ugly blue ones priced at $16. One of my teammates got them here last week for $8. As soon as I have the basics I run the heck out of there because this is ridiculous. There are at least 5 employees working in this tiny store, to the 3 customers in here and none of us can get any help - there's no excuse for that! Anyway, I get to the cashier and at least this guy had some communication skills rather than the grunting and pointing I had been getting from everyone else; he chose not to use them beyond the usual "find everything okay?" and "credit or debit?" though. If my game wasn't the next day right after work I would have gone somewhere else after ten minutes in that store, that was disgusting. Just awful. read more

Not perfect, but I feel the need to disclose my shopping details. Every time I go here I go with my mom and dad. I do a lot of shopping with them and thus we are a team though in different parts of the store undivided. We always have a goal and relate our goals to each other so if I was across the room from a sale person carefully dodging me...he could not avoid all three of us. Oh and how they do try, gotta admire that spirit as you break it- quizzing them on advertisement details and squeezing rain checks from their colorless , weak forms like blood from a stone. We go for sales shoes, we find at least two people to help us because experience says one of them will go on break or rearrange papers at the front of the store. The massive sales far outweigh disinterested staff. Fight for it! read more

Worst customer service I have ever received while shopping at this location. The store manager Crystal is incredibly rude and lacks proper customer service skills. I had to convince her to take the time to look up my purchase on a clearly defective item. She returned with the information, at which time I apologized for the hassle and expressed how much I appreciated her taking the time to do this. I received NO response, just a completely cold attitude. As a manager I would expect better customer service skills, aren't managers the ones who set the example? Who gave her that title? Is this the best Big 5 has to offer? I sure hope not. Maybe she's just upset at the fact that at this point in her life she's only gone as far as a manager at big 5.... Who knows.... Next time I shop for camping supplies I'll go to REI. read more

Don't go here. Manager and employees on the floor are not very helpful. The girls at the registers should have been running the store. Manager does not have employees engage with customers on the floor, then is surprised that people are walking out with products (a camping tent during my time there). Employees at registers have to have 100 dollar bills checked by manager before accepting them. Crazy town. I ended up going to target a couple hundred feet away and bought the same ball for less. read more

This is the worst sporting goods store I have been to in the Seattle area. It is, unfortunately the one that is closest to me, so I've been there a number of times. It purports to be a sporting goods specialty store, yet carries only low-end items that you can get often get at Target, which is in the same complex. Today put me over the edge. I will not return to Big 5. I went down there because I stumbled upon a 20% off coupon online. I read it very thoroughly as it had a paragraph about "excluded" items. I was looking for a deal on a jersey and I didn't want to pay full price. I'm very used to reading small print and I understand the language on the coupon. I went to the Westwood Village Big 5 specifically to use this coupon. I was told that the jersey I was getting was "excluded" from the coupon. The logic used by the cashier was nonsensical. She called the manager, who did not come to the register to talk to me. but told the clerk she was correct. By the logic used by the employees, every brand of product in the store would have been "excluded" from the coupon: Nike, Adidas, Carhartt, golf equipment, soccer equipment, baseball equipment under those brands and others. I've been a youth soccer coach for years and I have a kid that constantly needs sports equipment. Big 5 is a small, poorly stocked, low-end store that uses bait-and-switch advertising. Sport Authority and Dicks have much better selection, competitive prices, and they don't get you to their stores with fake, rip-off coupons. read more

If you have a lot of time to waste, waiting for service, go to the Burien Big 5. The employees here have ZERO knowledge about what they sell, which is OK I guess, you can't expect everybody to be a subject matter expert, but what really annoys me is that I can never get anybody to help me. I think i have seen at max three employees working in this store at one time, and they all seem to be busy doing other things than servicing customers. read more

This location is never really packed, there's never a lot of people shopping here whenever I'm in, then again there's never more than a couple staff here either. However, if you catch a sale here on sporting goods, such as tennis equipments, tennis balls, soccer balls, athletic clothings, and sometimes watches. Those are pretty good price and nice brand compare to a sale at another sporting good store. So far I haven't got a problem with returns, or customer service issues. read more

Called to check on whether they had an item in stock. I gave them the brand name, sku number and style #. Was told they had one and I had them hold it for me. Went down the next day and the item held was the wrong one....A total waste of time. Not a person in the place so you think they might have gone to check for my item again-nope totally lazy people with very low customer service. I have always received great service here. The staff are pleasant, patient and helpful. I have two kids who are always in need of something at this Big 5, so we go there about 3 times/month. I would recommend this store to anyone needing general sporting items, licenses or tennis shoes. read more
