    Greasy Cheesesteak

Just went to Big Al's for the first time. I'm a little skeptical since I have spent 30 years in the steak and deli business in Philadelphia. This place base on reviews probably makes a decent steak during the day. Unfortunately at night they seem to really drop the ball. Maybe they figure the drunker the customer the less quality the product has to be. As I'm typing this my wife just said worst cheesesteak she's ever had in her life. Super greasy super chewy. Actually smells and tastes like the grease trap. All I'm saying is that if you are the only cheesesteak joint in Delray. You need to do so much better for your customers. You actually have inspired me to consider opening a competitor cheesesteak place near you. Please do better. I'll try you again next time I'm in town to see if you take comments serious or not. Thanks for listening

Big Al's is a no frills dive on the corner of Southeast Fifth Street and Atlantic Ave in Delray Beach. You order at the window and the are a couple of dirty tables surrounded by cigarette butts on the sidewalk. Parking is by pay meter on the street. I was going to eat somewhere else that ended up being closed so while walking down Atlantic I ended up at Al's, a place I passed thousands of times but never ended up stopping. According to the story Big Al and his son Adam were Philadelphia natives who couldn't find an authentic cheesesteak experience when they moved to South Florida. They set out to create it themselves with rib eye steaks and Italian rolls and Big Al's was born. I ordered the regular cheesesteak with onions and provolone ($12.95), with an iced tea and tip the total came to $17. A small order of fries would have been another $4.75. I cleaned off the table the best I could and dined al fresco on the avenue. They are open late, all the way to 3 AM on Friday and Saturday so it is the perfect spot to grab some food to soak up the alcohol if you are bar hopping down Atlantic. I am glad to finally knock this Delray Beach staple off my bucket list.

The staff is awesome! The prices are high and the advertised prices are not true. The prices are higher in the register even when paying cash!!!!! They tack on 20% for debit cards. Advertise your REAL prices and stop ripping your customers off. I come here every week!!

Way downhill from even just last year. All bread, no substance. Light on steak, light on wiz. There are better cheesesteaks very locally.

During the week, they have combos that are even more reasonably priced. You order (and pay) at the counter, and they bring your food to you. Drinks are self-serve as are some of the toppings. My husband got their lunch foot-long hot dog combo. The grilled dog really was quite long. He requested mustard and chopped onions on it. The crinkle cut fries were well done. He liked both more than enough to say he'd order this again. I got their small (7") cheesesteak sandwich. I didn't get it as a combo -- knowing I'd be stealing some fries from my husband's plate). Instead of onions, I got it with mushrooms and sweet green peppers. And I chose provolone for my cheese. The bread was packed with grilled steak. I really liked my cheesesteak! It was a tad greasy and absolutely delicious. The only thing I would do differently next time is not get the mushrooms (there are other toppings from which to choose) as they are not fresh, but canned. I'm sure we'd stop back by the next time we are in the area. And next time, I'd like to get the hot dog. Maybe he'll try the cheesesteak?

They've got a strong lineup of pies behind the counter and some great lunch specials that make it an easy midday stop. I kept it simple with a classic cheese slice and a water for $6 (a steal). There's also a two-slice and drink combo for $8.95, but the slices here are generously sized, so one was more than satisfying for me. Service was quick and genuinely friendly--my slice was heated up and in hand within minutes. The pizza itself checked all the boxes: hot, foldable, with a crisp crust that still had that slight chew you want in a true NY-style slice. Simple, classic, and done right. The space is casual with a handful of indoor tables and a couple outside, making it perfect for a quick dine-in. They also offer takeout and delivery, and there's plenty of easy parking out front--always a win. Danny's is officially on my go-to list when the pizza craving hits. Looking forward to working my way through more of their menu.

The slice as well is big, has a nice undercarriage but could have been cooked a little longer for my personal liking, the sauce to cheese ratio is spot on. Not overly greesy just enough to give u that new york slice feel. Nice fold as well. The service was very nice greeted as i came in and food brought to my table. My husband I order here often and we always see the owner on site. He says hello and is welcoming when we go inside to pick up our order. For the cost, these cheesesteaks are a great deal and delicious. The steak sandwiches come in a nice box which retains the heat without sogging up the sandwich. Very nice touch! We use the app to order and we always order the same thing (steak and cheese with lettuce and pickles) and we really appreciate the "order your last order" option. We ordered the cheese fries for the first time tonight. Tons of cheese sauce (yum - thank you)! Fries themselves are too limp. I have no problem with them but I can see what other reviewers have mentioned. Note to Charley's Steaks, as I know these are franchises): Change the French fry vendor, product, or check the process. The fries don't hold the crisp after the fry. Personally, I will eat them and love every drop of cheese on them limp soggy fries but I know cheese fry connoisseurs will be appalled. With so many good places completely missing the mark on hospitality and not engaging a welcoming feeling, it's nice to be acknowledged as a customer. I'm not sure if the owner is new (or same owner that prior reviews were based on) but it's pretty evident that the tone flows down from the top. He shows he cares when you walk in. This place has a good vibe and caring staff! And the steak and cheese is fabulous!

We were seated when our guests arrived and the waitress greeted us with a smile and was attentive throughout the meal. The atmosphere is that of a casual lively restaurant, keep in mind when making reservations. Now I'm only putting the foods that I myself tried through out the meal, for there were 14 in our party. I tried the meatball sliders which in my opinion were the big surprise (tender & tasty), charred octopus was very nice and well prepared, in house tater tots were decent with some what of a scallion flavor added, prime rib sandwich was good but could have been a bit rarer and fries were very good ( possibly double fried which is awesome but can't confirm that). First seated, we were only given 2 food menus (with 5 drink menus) despite being a party of 5. This made it a bit challenging to decide on food, but the menu was simplified enough we managed to be ready for when the server arrived. We started with some apps: BBQ pork fries and mild wings (boneless and bone in). All were phenomenal! The mild sauce was a pleasant heat unlike many places that focus more on the spice. The boneless were not your typical meat chunks and a knife came in handy but it was good. I appreciated the unique way they incorporated celery onto the wings. The fried were also fantastic with a nice savory taste and even cheese and toppings. Definitely recommend all of the above! For food we went with burgers and fish and chips. The burgers were great, which was good considering these are definitely high end priced at over $20 for a basic burger. The fish and chips were OK. Nicely cooked and flakey but a rather bland flavor overall. I'd recommend going with the burgers or just sticking with an app, the fish you can definitely get better elsewhere. I also had high expectations of the rosemary potatoes but they were very light on flavoring as well. It was a good experience, and if it's in your budget you'll likely have an enjoyable experience! Though the bathrooms were worth commenting on as they were quite... Unique. If someone was sitting, they were sitting for everyone to see. Not sure what's going on here- I'm guessing maybe a late ADA addition with limited space?
