Wow wow wow. We came to big Apple for breakfast and it was so good! The staff were so friendly and patient when we were trying to decide what we wanted. I got a southern sandwich on a cheddar herb bagel which was absolutely delicious. The only thing I was a little worried about was the fact that they were heating up the fixings in the microwave, but they were equally as good as if they were made fresh. We also got a bagel with honey cinnamon cream cheese which was also so good. We got food to go, but there are places you can go and sit inside! Definitely recommend. read more

I love a good bagel. But there are better bagel places in the area. This counter service location is what you'd expect from any bagel joint. You walk up, order your bagel, and pay. The process is pretty standard. There is nothing special about the ambiance, it is good for walk in and walk out. I ordered the sausage, egg and cheese bagel as suggested by the man behind the counter. I got it on an Asiago bagel that was toasted. The bagel itself didn't have the crust you'd expect. It was a soft bengal and there wasn't much flavor to it. The Asiago was barely noticeable. The sausage was the biggest minus, it had no caramelization and tasted just how it sounds, like a microwaved sausage. The egg was fluffy, which you'd also expect from a microwave. There was a nice surprise that came with my meal though... a mini cinnamon muffin. It was fine. read more

Beware of the rude lady behind the counter! I stopped to buy a dozen bagels and muffins. As the lady was putting the bagels in the bag, I asked if she can put the other half dozen in a separate bag as I was giving it to my friend. She turned around and said "well it would've been nice if you told me that in the beginning wouldn't it?" I was so upset that I wanted to walk out of there but my friend was with me and I was in there for her. Clearly she hates her job and that's a bad sign for a restaurant. By far the best bagels outside of New York. They taste as close to what a New York bagel actually tastes like. I've been going here for years and they never disappoint. My favorite is their chocolate chip bagel, but their cinnamon raisin, plain, whole wheat, and sesame bagels are also really good too. You get 13 bagels if you buy a dozen, which is cool of them. The staff are always the nicest too. I'll call ahead and they'll put aside certain bagels for me. I always have a good experience there. read more

This is the best bagel spot in all of the Midwest. The kind owners and workers are sweet, caring, and make the best breakfast bagelthin/egg/tomato/cucumber. My husband and I stop in multiple times per week, chat with the people, and get going to work. The food is delicious, the coffee is perfect, and the place is warm. Tuesdays are bagel specials, Every day is delicious. The only downside is that they aren't open on Sundays. read more

I was on vacation in Chicago last weekend, and stopped in for breakfast. I had a Swiss melt bagel and it was one of the best bagels I've ever had. The bagels are as close to homemade as you can get - not like those chains who produce them as if they were in a factory. It was soft, delicious, and cut by hand - not in one of those goofy slicers. It just felt like the guys who work there were taking the utmost care of my breakfast. Another great thing about Big Apple is the coffee. I had the Michigan Cherry, and absolutely loved it. The coffee ran out right when I poured some, and they jumped right in and made some really fast for me. It was worth it - a deep, rich, cherry taste and smell. Sorry guys. I was not too thrilled with my experience here. A simple turkey sandwich on a toasted bagel with lettuce and tomatoes. There are two things which afford Big Apple with a one star review. 1. The bagel was like eating a refrigerator bagel from a grocery store. It was soft, flat, tasteless. From a bagel shop named after New York, the center of the bagel world, I expected more. 2. While sitting there eating, I took a good look around. Even if the bagel was good, I would still have been concerned with the cleanliness of the place. The floor was dirty and the table around me had not been wiped. And, there is one thing that shows me the care, or lack of, that any shopkeeper has is when their ceiling tiles are wet, stained. I mean, ceiling tiles are not expensive to replace - spend a few dollars to make the place at least look clean. Now, the folks behind the counter were great - friendly and service oriented. But, I cannot forgive a restaurant that does not care about its look and cleanliness. read more

Avoid: Smoothies (they taste to frothy and powdery, ick) Big Apple Bagels' atmosphere is that of a typical little bakery. There are only about 5-6 tables but I've never seen the entire place full in the morning. Most of their business seams to be take-out, in the mornings at least. They sell a huge variety of bagels (and cream cheese), muffins, mini-muffins, and coffee. They also have breakfast and lunch menus with a selection of sandwiches. As far as service goes, it's always been great! Everyday Maria (one of the owners) greets me with warm smiles, friendliness, and enthusiasm. Her positive spirit is definitely contagious and I always feel GREAT after leaving, especially with my hot and delicious bagel sandwich in hand! If you haven't tried a hot bagel sandwich at Big Apple Bagel before I'd recommend you stop by and try it out. I really did not enjoy my experience at Big Apples. To comment on the food quality, I thought it was mediocre. The bagel was bland, and I did not like the taste of the cream cheese. It tasted artificial for me. I felt like it was unsanitary as well because the floor was dirty; I hope they clean more often since the garbage can was full of junk, which gave me such impressions. I understand it is 'self-service' type, but I did not like how the staff did not pay attention to the consumers' complaints. They definitely are not considerate. They recommended the chocolate muffins since they were "popular", but I don't know if they are since they tasted like chemicals. Overall, the rate should be pretty low, and I don't know if I will be back. Probably not, though. read more

Eek! I would really not recommend Big Apple Bagel. Honestly, I would recommend Einstein or Upper Crust bagel more than Big Apple. I just wanted to come and see how it was, but the bagels are bland (I mean, bagels are supposed to be bland, but not so much. It should have some flavor), and the place is dirty. The thing that really ticks me about this place is their horrible customer care (which is what is prompting me to use Yelp for the first time). I just think they are very rude to customers like myself, while other places do treat me much better. The people that work here are always nice. I always get the toasted cheddar twist southern tradition with a little mayo, a bag of Jalapeno chips to spice it up and some OJ to wash it down.
